What a beautiful smoky flavor with right balance of spices and salt. Just amazing ! Their samosa is like always so authentic and delicious with lots of potatoes peas filling. And we also loved their pani puri which was very crunchy and light, filled with very nice potato masala and of course served with tangy spicy water that you can't complain about! You can't miss Bollywood Bites if it stops by your area. It's a bright orange truck that leaves behind a fragrant scent of Indian spices wherever it goes. It stopped by at USC's Save Tommy Night to sell some of its various curries and wraps to anyone that was near Tommy Trojan that time of night. Thankfully, I happened to be there! I know very little about Indian food, and since I have had a few bad experiences ordering spontaneously and freely at Indian restaurants, I usually stick to anything Chicken Tikka. And that's what I decided on - the Chicken Tikka bowl. It came out quicker than I thought it would, and I nearly fell over from the weight of the curry. They give you a lot -- that's for sure. However, my first bite was... anticlimactic. I expected a whirwind of rich flavors and a kick that would get my eyes watering and my tongue simmering, but not to the point that I needed to be taken to the ER. The similarities are unintentional but Bollywood Bites is like Bollywood movies. They can either be very very good or very very bad. Surprisingly it was the difficult things they did well, and the simpler items they had trouble with. I ordered a combo, that came with 2 entrees, basmati rice and naan. I chose chicken tikka marsaka, and lamb vindaloo, but they didn't have lamb ob the truck so I switched to a shrimp vindaloo. The Chicken Tikka Marsala was outstanding, it was a dark orange curry, that was hot without being overwhelming. I could have eaten a whole bowl of it.and called it a meal too. The shrimp was well spiced too. It was a different curry, and the shrimp was more prevalent than the potatoes. I do wish that they had removed the shrimp tails, before adding the sauce, but then I wish every place would do that. What I dont understand is how lame the rice was. By volume this was half the meal, and it was cold. I was served a bright yellow rice, that looked like saffron, but tasted like, well, nothing. It could have been plain white rice. I would have enjoyed soaking up the curry. How is it they got the marsala and vandaloo heated to the proper temperature but failed so badly on the rice? I was also disappointed in the naan. I don't know what the solution is as obviously a brick tandoor isn't an option your average food truck, but reheating packaged naan from a restaurant supply house isn't the answer either. Since I work pretty close to LA Mart I try to checkout the food trucks that showup. This week was Bollywood Bites. The truck was very clean and there was practically no wait after we ordered. The food was good, but the sauce stole the show. Spicy, spicy, spicy! Not hot, just a lot of spice and it works well. The flat bread that they provide is perfect to sop up all the sauce, yum. I'm unfamiliar with LA Indian food, but I'm from NJ, a state where the samosas frolick freely through the hills and which has hot and cold running masala. Not that I'm saying NJ Indian food is better than what you can find in other states, but, well, it is. By that standard, Bollywood Bites is pretty damn good. I got a samosa (2 for 3.99) and the chicken tikka masala (bowl with basmati rice for ~8.50). Both were really tasty, the tikka masala living up to the "spicy" I asked for. Oh, don't be fooled by the pictures, which show white basmati rice and lead you to believe you might actually be getting something healthy buried beneath all that tasty curry meat. The rice has flirted pretty hard with ghee and will offer you no relief from obesity. Or deliciousness. Only thing keeping this from a 5 is the price. $8.50 is a good price for food+ambiance. I love indian food... and when I spotted Bollywood Bites at the SM Main Street Lot recently, I decided to try. I saw they had Pani Puri, which I had read about, but never tried. The man working the order side was great--he asked if I'd ever tried them and I said I hadn't. He explained that the Pani Puri were plain, and suggested we get the Sev Puri, which had toppings. I'm so glad we did. I can't tell you what all was in this dish, but it was amazing. The puri shells were light and crisp, even though they had a variety of toppings on them, including something savory, something a little bit spicy and a sweet chutney (tamarind, I think). Anytime I'm in or around West LA or Santa Monica area I look on twitter to hunt this amazing food truck down. My favorite dish on this truck has got to be the spicy Chicken Marsala. The chicken is very tender and cooked to perfection, it's served on a nice size portion of rice which is also very flavorful. I feel robbed by this place! I ordered a kathi roll. The picture on the menu looked great. It was wrapped in the proper Indian paratha, stuffed with chicken, onions, paneer, good stuff. What I received was gross, and basically amounted to a burrito stuffed with rice (not typically found in kathi rolls), wilted lettuce, and some chicken. And worst of all it was wrapped in a tortilla?? That is not the right bread for a kathi roll!! For those not familiar with the dish, imagine if you went to a Mexican restaurant and ordered a chicken quesadilla, and then you received ground meat, American cheese and rice sandwiched between two slices of Wonderbread. THAT IS NOT THE DISH I ORDERED! It is not even the dish that was pictured on the side of the truck! EVEN WORSE -- I just did an image search for "Kathi Roll" and the second photo that popped up was the photo on the truck. It looks great, but it has nothing to do with Bollywood Bites, and it is not at all what I received and paid NINE (!) dollars for. If you want to sell an Indian burrito, call it a burrito, and make sure you show an accurate photo of the food you're serving. Bait and switch = robbery. On a personal note--I understand that the "spice" level is catered towards the masses but when someone asks for EXXXXXXXTRA spicy, try to add more than a sprinkling of diced onions. I came to this food truck while we were at the Street Food Cinema. I love Indian food, so I was excited to try it out. On the plus side the service was very friendly and helpful (which is the only reason they got two stars), but that does not make up for the food, unfortunately. This is the first time that I've had Indian food that lacked flavor and I left hungry. I was very disappointed. I order a combo meal with the lamb vindaloo and the saag gobi with a side of rice, but what I got was a ton of rice with a little bit of lamb vindaloo and saag gobi with no flavor. Bollywood Bites food truck oy vey where do I begin... Well the name is fitting Bollywood's food truly Bites! No Bueno. We decided to explore some Indian food at Eat See Hear while taking in the Big Lebowski. To paraphrase the Dude I want my $12 back who do I see? The menu was limited but I guess that this Sanjay fellow the mastermind behind my $12 food robbery was a hit back in the day with a variety of B list wanna be celebs as evidenced by the photos of him with the assortment of has been's he's pictured with at the order window... No food pics only Sanjay and a collection led by Paris Hilton and some random rapper who boinked a Kardashian I think seriously is there a rapper who hasn't. OMG what was I thinking making culinary dining choices from women whose claim to fame are sex tapes not refined palette's. Ok the food robbery details. We opted for a (2) item combo Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer which includes a dollop of Uncle Ben's instant white rice masquerading as Basmati and a piece of thawed dough they called Naan. Homeboy taking my cash said Sanjay is famous for his food and we picked his classic dishes. Dude is full of sh*t... Seriously $12 lighter and 38 seconds later they called my name your order is up? Wow so much for fresh and cooked to order lol The food came in a small plastic to go tin with the Naan wrapped in aluminum foil. Get this all the Naan is preheated and wrapped in foil stacked up ready to go for the (3) hours they are on site serving! Now the goods, the serving size of the entrees was about 2.5 tablespoons each with the Uncle Ben's version of Basmati rice making up the difference. Oh yeah it also included about five sprigs of green blend lettuce which I thought was garnish and they said was a side salad. Really this is your $12 combo plate. Obviously Sanjay also owns Jinky's and his business model is the same which is a joke. The food itself wasn't good aside from the portions the taste didn't work and the chicken was overcooked which is a byproduct of being precooked and kept warm in a big pot. Suffice to say there version of Saag Paneer was even less successful. The spice level was a joke and varied dramatically from teaspoon to teaspoon taster. This was a complete waste of $12 and subjecting our palette's to this debacle was even worse. Thank god there were about a dozen other food vendors to choose from and we sampled a few which were really good the 411 to follow. Suffice to say this culinary adventure with Sanjay was a failure of biblical proportions. I didn't Yelp him before ooops as I would have seen my BFF review by Rashmi and kept walking. Dr Lloyd Grieg recommended this place to me. I wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for him because I have recently found my "go to" for Indian food, however, I decided to give it a go. The food here is amazing. The sauce in my paneer masala (if you like sauce) is so good it's dangerous. I have been dipping all kinds of things in it. To be honest I was a bit skeptical of this TMZ-branded truck, and especially since all the other Indian food trucks I have tried were really mediocre. But Bollywood Bites, I gave you a try and I'm glad that I gave you a chance because you were delicious! Service is friendly, and the food comes out quickly. The flavors taste as authentic as you can get from a truck. Chicken Tikka Masala was wonderful. Hints of curry, a spice that is not overwhelming. Hot, but not too hot. Flavorful, but not overdone. Chicken was tender and the rice was cooked well. Not overly dry or even hard like I have experienced with other trucks... They have a good selection of all the Indian fare basics, and the prices are fair. I have to note the food packaging is robust and keeps the food warm. To be perfectly honest, this was just okay Indian food. Perhaps instead of all the name dropping circle jerking that this truck does, they should focus on the quality of the food as well as lowering the price a little. First problem I had was that half of the truck seems to be pictures of the chef with celebrities or articles showing you how awesome this guy is for being a craft service truck. Then you have the price of the food. Even the side items are costly. You have Samosas that hit the $4 mark for two of them? Really? Naan wraps are around $7. You can't even get a salad from here without throwing away a ten spot. All the combo meals and plates seem to pass the $10 mark and that feels a bit too expensive for a street food truck. I don't care if you've cooked for people on television and rock stars, you sort of have to meet me in the middle when you're selling me street food. I would expect the prices to be some place I would sit down or something like that, but to me you're no better than craft services and I eat there daily. The taste of the food also seems pretty middle of the road. It wasn't bad, so much that it wasn't memorable. I think I've had strip mall Indian food that was slightly better and a lot less expensive than this. Over all, it's worth a try and they do put the stuff in a proper clam shell so it doesn't get too messy eating it nor does it seep through the container. Today was my first and last time ordering from this restaurant. We ordered take-out via GrubHub and were given a 7:55-8:05 ETA. We arrived at around 8:07, but we're asked to take a seat because our order would be ready in 15-20 minutes. At first I thought the worker made an error and confused our order, but he confirmed it wasn't a mistake. I thought, Ok, fine, you're running a little behind, but surely it wouldn't be an additional 15 minutes let alone 20. I sat down and 15, 20, 40 minutes passed until I was finally given the order with only the subtlest of apologies. This must be a regular thing. Others who were coming in were facing similar waits. One woman even raised her voice. A few had pick-up times after mine (I asked as they were leaving out of curiosity) and were still getting their food before I did. The worst part? The food was mediocre at best. The Chana masala and Garlic bread were bland, The puri puffs were stale. It's hard to find authentic Indian food nowadays on the road, but seriously, Bollywood Bites is insanely tasty, AND authentic. I had the chicken tikka masala dish and it was delicious. They gave a good amount of chicken and rice too. Get the samosas for an appetizer and don't forget the mango lassi drink! The chef Sanjay Patel has been cooking Indian food for celebrities. Ordered the 2 dishes and asked they be made spicy: Chicken Tikka Masala: Terrible, aweful. I tasted it and spit it out, Chicken Tikka Masala here is some 0 spice cream sauce dry chicken crap, and only Mr.Patel knows how long it has been under a heatlamp for. At least pretend you tried to make it spicy. Tandoori Chicken: Much better, if the Chicken Tikka Masala is a -5, this is a solid 0.5. That said, still terrible and not actually really Tandoori Chicken. Naan: I have acheived much better tasting naan and hotter from Trader Joe's frozen garlic Naan bags. Gulab Jamun: For god sake at least we can get some good dessert right? I don't know how this place got such good reviews??... Maybe no one had the rice? really? Maybe no one had the naan bread? Maybe this was their first Indian experience? Maybe I had a total miss day with this truck? not so likely...Its bread and rice staple that had issues. Well the trucks Thursday in Chatsworth were MUCH better than my previous review of such Horrible trucks (see reviewews)...but not that much better food. I tried this truck, the PhillyPlease Cheese truck, and the Meaty Burger truck(i'll get the name right in the review when it posts). So the rice was bad and clumpy, the naan was some prepacked doughy dry blah. Having said that the chicken masala was decent flavor. Btw, this plate was $10!!! There are about 8 places off the top of my head that have 4 times the over head with a restaurant, waiters kitchen , plates, utenciles, Health Dept checks, more taxes, and god knows what else that dishes out MUCH better food than this truck...and to top it off they service much better often with a fresh buffet option with lots more variety of dishes. Bollywood Bites wanted to charge me $3 for the small bottle of Indian Coca-Cola. WTF!!?? After considering all this I lowered my rating from 2 stars to 1 star....come on! Not good enough! ZERO value. This is a truck geared for the sheep who rather stand and eat a semi- bad meal, vs sit and eat a Great meal for the same price...or less I will add!. OMG...I created a Yelp account just so I could rave about Bollywood Bites and Sanjay Patel!! I'm a vegetarian and I love Indian food and Sanjay makes some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I first discovered Bollywood Bites downtown at the 7th@Fig plaza during lunch. I had the channa masala and aloo gohbi combo and loved that he made it extra spicy just how I like it. Chicken tikka masala was good- just the right amount of heat. (I asked for medium spice) The portion was a generous bowl with rice. The samosa had a great crispy/crusty shell and the filling was spicy. I noticed too late that they also have paneer tikka masala on the menu, which is nice. Satisfied that craving for Indian food. Not the best I've ever had, but definitely solid. I would go back. My one gripe is that for some reason I had to wait about 15 minutes while other people came and left with their food. I got the tikka masala and samosas, and I saw other people taking those same items away while I had to stand there forever. Maybe they dropped my ticket? It was pretty annoying. After waiting 30 minutes for my food, I suggested to the order taker that she stop taking orders for a while and help the person preparing food. She did that, and things improved, but you think someone that runs a food truck professionally would be able to figure that out. Now for the food. We ordered the combo (2 meats, salad and naan). The chicken curry was good, but the tandoori chicken was dreadful. So dry it was hard to eat. I dipped it in the curry sauce to try to improve it, but still not good. Plus, the salad had NO DRESSING. What Subbu said. This was like Trader Joes brand Indian food. Bland, watery, unimaginative. Color me unimpressed. Also, small complaint, but I hate when food trucks have lazy food packaging that leads to excess spillage. Come on now, you KNOW you're a food truck! It's a GUARANTEE that people will be walking with this food, possibly down a crowded street. Don't give me some styrofoam open plate or a cheap container that barely holds sauce. Half my tikka was in the bottom of that bag by the time I got back to my office, and for some reason that just really annoyed me. read more
