We had reservations at 7:30pm for 4 on Bastille Day. We arrived on time. The host told us our table should be ready in 10min because that group had received the check and paid. She had us sit at a table outside and gave us the menu to look at. But then we didn't hear from her again until 8:20pm; our table was ready. We can see the table where we eventually sat at when we were outside and it wasn't occupied that whole time. But we get seated and our waitress didn't take our order until 8:45pm and that's only because one of us went up to her and told her that we had a 7:30pm reservation and we still haven't ordered food. She kept messing our food order and generally not a good waitress at all. This has to be one of the worst services we've had in SF. The food was also OK. We were out with friends so we enjoyed talking to them but the poor service and food being OK was a huge disappointment! Neither the host or the waitress offered anything (water, tea, glass of wine on the house) while we were waiting. Because we were seated an hour late and didn't actually have our meal until 9pm, we had to pay our babysitter for an extra hour. There was absolutely no mindfulness of awareness of people dining at the restaurant. This restaurant management should do better by training their host and wait staff to be better! This is so good I'm still thinking about it since dinner last night. The price is so reasonable and the menu is seasonal along with the freshest ingredients. Every flavor is showing up and tickling my/the pallet. This was beyond a 5 star experience. I have to write this because it would be a tragedy if I didn't give this restaurant its proper dues. They brought out a tepanade to open up the pallet and we were off to the races. The Somme Le gave us some wine Instuction and helped us to choose the exact right glass of wine to have for our individual taste and preference. So delicious and fun. The gazpacho was so sumptuous I thought it can't get better then this. Then the heirloom tomato salad was still better and I didn't think that would be possible. Out comes this perfect toasted bread with a butter with salt that was exactly right for the soup and salad. On to the pork loin with an exceptional mustard cream sauce that was amazing and the loin was moist and perfectly cooked. We finished with the poached peach and velvety smooth peach ice cream with an apricot sauce and crème fresh topped with pistachio crumble. My god tbb he and you, thank you, thank you. Cute place for a small group dinner! I came with a girlfriend to catch up over dinner, and got seated at the window corner. Great vibe, delicious food and awesome service! We went with the adventurous dish of the day - the chef decides what to make, and it came out to be a nicely presented Foie Gras Mouse dish with grapes and pickled pearl onions - very delicious! We also got the beef tartare, and the veal sirloin, both pretty good! For dessert we shared the La Fraise & Rhubarbe. I've had Bouche on my to-try list for a long time. The food here is amazing, the decor is adorable! We really enjoyed everything we had at bouche. They also have a surprise item on the menu called the adventurous. The server will tell you the price and if allergies can be accommodated for it but no other description. I ordered it out of curiosity and it turned out to be a very boney fish. 2/4 of the diners at our tables liked it, the other 2 did not like the bones. The atmosphere was rustic. There is not a lot of room in the restaurant, but it is a nice experience to eat here. We ordered the beet salad, barramundi seabass, lamb shank, wine, and le chocolat brownie. The beet salad was pretty good with the pumpkin seeds and balsamic vinaigrette. I was light and hardy at the same time. The barramundi seabass was served with rice, mussels and clams. The lamb shank wasn't too gamey with the peas, and it was cooked nicely. It San Francisco's greatest food gem. It's hidden alright but when found it becomes a treat, customer service is more like family making sure you're good. It's giving home vibe , and date night of course. I love how professional the servers are and they all work together and not against each other. Same with the hangar steak. Other than that, everything was cooked perfectly. The pinot noir was good, but nothing to write home about. We had to request extra water to wash down all the salt. The server took us upstairs to be seated and there was already a party of 3 sitting by the wall, so any normal person would assume since the place is basically empty, he would seat you AWAY from them by the windows. Stopped in for a little holiday cheer away from the madness of Union Square. Well, let's face it, draw a 1 mile diameter circle around Union Square this time of year and it's a little nuts with all the holiday shoppers, holiday partiers, and all the other "holiday" reasons for being annoying. Glad we stopped in. it was calm, warm, and tasteful. The Baron deSeillac Brut Rose was fine example of a tasty rose bubbly from Provence. The Chimères Saint-Roch Cotes du Roussillon was a little tannic and tight., but Bouche doesn't make the wine, just pours it. What they did make that we tried was just right for a chilly SF night. The Roasted carrots were perfectly done - a little crunch to the butter roasted glaze. The chestnut soup was warm and hearty. Prices are standard for San Francisco. Dare I even say, reasonable? We had just finished a tour of Chinatown and wanted something more to eat. Thinking we would just get a little bite to eat, we couldn't say no to the amazing 3 course meal at Bouche. Plus, the restaurant would be closed for vacation the next two weeks so this would be our only chance to try this French restaurant. The owners are amazing and the staff is friendly and helpful. We shared a meal and added an extra appetizer, the mystery appetizer and a couple glasses of white wine. I'm not going to pretend to understand everything I ate BUT I know delicious, savory food and was very impressed with the whole meal! Oh, I forgot to take a pic if the salmon! Bouche is one of those spots that Yelp makes you excited for, but ends up failing to live up to the expectation. Maybe I went on an off night? Maybe my expectation was to high? However, in the end I think the food and service was good but not anything special that would make me want to come back for more. While the menu can largely be called French, I would venture to make the argument that it is French-inspired California cuisine. Certainly check out the appetizers as they are small bites that are good to share and showcase a variety of their cuisine. The salmon, poached egg, and creme fraiche was certainly a star with a balance of texture from the crispy noodles and the delicate raw salmon and flavor with from the saltiness of the egg and salmon complemented nicely from the sweetness in the creme fraiche. The sardine, grapefruit, and mint salad was a refreshing dish, however I personally like fish and even this was a lot of fish flavor to take in. The Octopus salad could use a little acid to combat the natural saltiness of octupi. The lamb with onion marmalade was nothing to sneer at, however was just a tad overcooked for me. While it was very tender, the flavors were somewhat muddled by the onion and fresh parsley which took over as star of the show. Dessert made me go "meh..." It clearly wasn't their forte, however the creme fraiche custard was ok and the pear tart with vanilla ice cream nothing to sneer at either. The small quaint feel and rustic charm of Bouche is its clear selling point. Its seating area is primarily upstairs overlooking the kitchen which adds to the intimate nature of the establishment. The service is good and reasonably attentive and helpful. Overall, it was an ok meal. Nothing truly stellar or wow-ing. The food was good, service decent, and ambiance lovely. Have been here for the previous 2 places and while the physical layout is almost identical and served a boutique style cuisine at a cozy atmosphere, each restaurant spun a different feel and finesse. This place was fairly busy and especially in the evening when we popped by they reserved upstairs for 1 big party, so it just left all the bar seating for everyone else. We had a beer (4 on tap plus others in bottles) while waiting for some people to leave. The server was excellent as he served us in smaller wine glasses for tasting before we actually ordered. This was the same when we were ready to do wine pairing later on too. A smaller menu and so we were able to try out a few of them. Fougase (house made bread topped with bacon and halved olives inside) was just okay and would have been better if the bread was warm. The soup was buttery and was okay. The beet salad with duck confit was good greased taste. So we were a bit underwhelmed at this point, but then the salmon on top of a deep fried tiny noodles wrapping a poached egg wrapped was absolutely a phenomena! This requires skills and we were awed big time. The suggested Alycastre Rose pairing which had a bit of smokey flavor was great. Roasted Brussel sprouts were excellent and was a trending dish. It was crisp with layers happily falling like chips as I took a bite to it. Both stuffed chicken and lamb shoulder were good solid, juicy. The recommended pairing Vinsobres, Corbieres were both matching and brought out the flavors of the dishes. For Dessert we had panna cotta and white chocolate with caramelized pear (poached style) and brown butter sable were delicate and not too sweet. Service was fantastic and attentive and the fact that they let us try a few wines before deciding which ones to pair was a very nice touch. Almost as salty as Kobe Bryant watching LeBron in the Playoffs right now lolol It's always tough when i pay a lot for a meal and the restaurant gives me back a lot of sodium in exchange. I just looked at the description for the one word that I knew and I ordered it. *french, french, DUCK Confit, french, french* "Ooo, duck! Let's get that!" I exclaimed, not knowing that the description probably translated to: *salt, sodium, Duck Confit, more salt, more sodium* I made the same mistake with the Lamb, the Scallops and the Tomahawk Porkchop... Anyway, the Duck Confit came and we were in shock because it looked like 3 meatballs from Ikea. I didn't expect to get an entire duck with it's beak, feathers, and everything, but I sure as heck wasn't expecting 3 meatballs. Shame one me for not paying attention in my French 1 class. The more accurate translation of the description was probably something like this: *salt, sodium, Duck Confit, not really, just ikea meatballs* Oh well, you win some and you lose some. My friend found this place through yelp and our minds were blown. I used to live fairly close to this restaurant and I can't believe I haven't discovered it sooner! We ordered our own individual dishes and shared with each other. There wasn't one dish that was slightly disappointing. Every dish, left us hungry for more! Argula salad, seared steelhead, roasted veal blade, kale stuffed bread risotto, and wild boar was amazing! The steelhead was cooked to perfection and fresh. The wild boar meat was surprisingly sweet and tender. The veal blade was not gamey and the meat was fall off the bone good. The risotto was crispy and creamy. Bless the Bouche for being open til 1 AM and still being delectably classy. A friend whom I hadn't seen in 8 years was in town and we set up an impromptu dinner date--our only search criteria was that it be French. Bouche is right next to a bar I've enjoyed in the past, Tunnel Top, and I remember hearing from the bartender there that the two were somehow affiliated. Well, everybody who works at Bouche really is French--as is the Tunnel Top crew-- and many of the customers also answer to the name of Francois so we really found the epitome of what we sought with this spot. Don't be fooled by the fact that the guys working here can pronounce their "r"s without discernible foreignness: they are authentic. Plus it is comfortably close to public transport (Union Square/Powell St.) which worked out perfectly as a meeting point. I enjoyed a great creamy soup with charred garlic and mushrooms, as well as a beautiful piece of perfectly cooked Halibut. My friend liked the carpaccio and the sardine salad he was given accidentally (and invited to enjoy for free). The salmon looks like a bird's nest with baby bird fetuses on it, which was both artistic and gothic. I didn't taste it but the customers next to us at the bar, who were copying everything we ordered, said it was incredible. Quaint French cuisine in a very small space. This bistro and wine bar is located in Lower Nob Hill. It was easier for us to walk 1.5 miles from China Basin rather than attempt to ride evening traffic. Since we had a party of 5, we were seated upstairs. The food and wine selections were exquisite. We tried every appetizer on the menu. Entrees were evenly split between the hanger steak, halibut, and chicken. Every entrée was cooked to perfection. So don't be fooled by the limited menu. Bouche is akin to a small Country French Bistro - intimate, homey, rustic, genuinely Provincal, with convivial staff and simple but excellent fare; locally sourced and incredibly fresh. We ate here last night and enjoyed a host of dishes, including the Cheese plate (to start) which offered 2 semi soft goat cheese; 1 akin to Morbier and the other like a fine Blue. The hard cow's milk was like a raclette. Served with apricot and blackberry compote it was excellent. Like having dessert as a first course which is never a bad thing IMHO. Next course were the marinated sardines with grapefruit. Excellent. I can't recall fresher tasting sardines...they still had their full color and tasted like they had been caught in the past hour. We also had the stewed and oiled peppers with burrata. Simple, but tasty. We also had the King Trumpet and Maitake mushrooms with greens, which were a disappointment, hence the loss of a star. Interestingly, the King Trumpets tasted exactly like stale biscuits that they sometimes served us in school when I was a child. A somewhat odd but poignant memory sparked by the flavour of the mushrooms. For Entrees we had Smoked Salmon with Creme Fraiche, and the Pork Belly & Shoulder. The pork was mind-boggling good...two different cuts of pork - shoulder, confit, and the belly, which was unctuous and delicious. The confit was topped with a tangy pickled onion which set it off nicely. The salmon is their signature dish (see business photo - that's it), and while it was tasty, I found it plain and far eclipsed by the Pork. I wished I had tried the Cod instead. The Wine List is noteworthy - they have an excellent selection of small vintages from Provence and Languedoc Rousillon, among others. I had a glass of the Jurancon and the Beaupre Coteaux. The former was alive with fruit, not too snappy, and had a slight finish of Lynchee. The latter was crisp and dry with elements of lemon and apple. Both were excellent. I felt like our waiter was a little aggressive and didn't put us at ease. We sat outside and the table and chairs were all at an angle (because the street was at an angle), so kind of an odd feeling. The mimosas were excellent, and the omelette was soft and layered ... very French, not like an American omelette. The croque madame and potatoes were delicious. So in conclusion, food was 5 stars, service and ambiance 3 stars, but food is more important, so maybe close to 4.5 stars. read more

You definitely need reservations if you're planning on eating during normal dinner hours. The hubby and I shared an appetizer made with Roasted King Trumpets And Maitakes, Dill Pesto & Fresh Pluots. Such a great salad to start with. The mushrooms had oodles of flavor. I almost licked the plate clean. The hubby had a Marinated Salmon, Poached Egg And Crême Fraiche as his entree. The salmon was so melt in your mouth. It was lightly smoked. It was almost sashimi-like. There was a bed of crunchy noodles or rice under the salmon. It was a nice play of textures. I went for the Roasted Berkshire Pork Belly, Confit Pork Shoulder, Potato Purée, And Summer Truffle. SO. AMAZING. The pork belly was everything you would want it to be: tender, flavorful, awesome. The potato purée was like a delicious sauce for the pork. And the plate was LOADED with slices of black truffle. For only $25, it was a steal! We finished our night with a Crême Fraiche Custard. Bouche is the French word for mouth, and when I left, I thought my mouth was very happy after that dinner, as if you got a second chance to encounter that kind but gorgeous lady you really wanted to talk to after a really long period of time and the encounter was a stunning and thrilling success, leading you to think: "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" I had the Citrus and Honey Confit Lamb Shank. To be honest, it was probably the second best lamb dish that I have ever eaten within the past six years. That was how good it was. The flavor had the right amount of sweetness and it was still savory, and at the same time, the tenderness was just right. The ratatouille and couscous had an amazing blend of flavor that made this dish delicious and tasted very well with the lamb. The dish was not too expensive, probably at about $30. It should be enough for a light dinner, but an excellent one. The dessert was also pretty good, and if you need to get your stomach fuller, the Creme Fraiche Custard is a good option. The creaminess and the texture was excellent. The flavor was not too sweet. As for the service, the waiters were very friendly and knowledgeable. I was able to have a great conversation with Guillaume, the owner and he was very friendly and very committed to listening to any concerns you have. You don't really have to dress nice at this place, but you still can dress a little casual, and you still need to look fine at the same time. The interior is not very upscale, but not very casual with the wooden chairs, but overall, the interior still looks nice. It is also small, so at the most, you can have six people. It is a nice atmosphere for a dinner appointment with your companion or a couple cool buddies and a few great companions. You may need to get a reservation, but coming later in the evenings at 9:00 PM should be fine. They are open late until 1 AM, so you could get a lot of drinks from their wine bar and also a tasty dinner after a night out in the city. It is at a great location, not too far from Union Square. Overall, I thought I had one of the tastiest and possibly memorable fine dinners in San Francisco so far. Came here for a girls night with my friend YY. First impression: super small but homey and not really "fancy". However, don't let looks fool you--they have an upstairs seating area where there is a tad bit more space and the food is stellar. Environment: feels like youre sitting in someone's converted attic. There are only a few tables upstairs (and some bar seating downstairs) and tables are pretty close together. In other words, it's quite an intimate setting. There are windows upstairs to ventilate, but it will get hot inside. So don't wear any sweat-sensitive clothing when you dine here, and/or wear layers that you can remove! Atmosphere is smart casual -- you probably don't want to wear a T-shirt but jeans are probably fine and you won't stick out if you go a bit higher with slacks/skirts/dresses. Men's jacket not required but also ok. Note that the food is a bit pricey (apps $13+) but the flavor is on point. This time we just ordered appetizers because we weren't too hungry. We got the bacon bread (bacon pieces are literally baked with/inside the bread) which comes with some butter. YY got the carpaccio, which I thought was simple/clean but also very small. I got the pork belly, which was delicious and surprisingly not that small of a dish. Not to say I wouldn't have eaten more of it if it had been a bigger serving.... Picked this place for a date night when I was feeling French inspired and had a fantastic time! The restaurant is tiny and so each dish feels personalized and the wait staff is very attentive. We had the scallop crudo to start which was fresh and delicate. Then I had the lamb shank which fell right off the bone and was perfectly moist and tender. My husband had the Cornish hen which I ended up stealing because I thought it was to die for! I asked my hotel concierge where this gem was located, and he actually wasn't sure. As if we needed further proof concierges don't always know the best places in town. The staff is French, the atmosphere is rustic and charming... I could imagine us being in France. The suggested wine, a 2010 Domaine Auchere Sancerre Rouge, fit the waitress' explanation to a T. Very light, not too fruity, and lingers for a long time on the tongue. What a delightful, almost musical pairing to our dish. I'm buying a case when I get a chance. We got a cheese plate to start, which came in a perfect portion size. Each cheese... mmm mmm delicious. My entree was a pork loin with English peas, spring vegetables, and confit back fat consomme. The waitress explained that the pork loin is slow cooked for 11 hours, and I could tell!!! Incredibly tender. And the broth that resulted was intoxicating and fragrant. Man, that broth tasted good. I'd have tipped the bowl up and slurped the broth down had I not been dining with 2 classy ladies. We finished up with some dessert. The food was too good not to order more. I got a berry/fennel salad with shortcake (more out of pure intrigue about the fennel). It came in a long dish, with several components artfully arranged. Great, great finish. Impeccable marriage of flavors. Hands down one of the best places I've been to in San Francisco, and certainly gives Le Petit in Branford, CT a run for its money. read more

I'm glad I rediscovered Bouche, having completely forgotten about it after a friend recommended it to me several months back. Stopping in for dinner early last week with a friend, we were greeted with some accessibility issues that the waitstaff handled immediately, without us even requesting anything (more on that later). So, off to a good start, my friend and I ordered their: * Marinated Salmon, Poached Egg & Creme Fraiche [ http://flic.kr/p/dp6fgy ] - I've mentioned time and again my slight aversion to raw fish, but oh dear god this was an amazing dish. Every component of the dish blended together just so, to create a tasty, well-balanced burst of flavors and texture. We never quite figured out what the crispy noodle-like things were (strips of phyllo dough, according to Cherylynn N), but they certainly helped make the dish was it was. * Roasted Berkshire Pork Belly, Confit Pork Shoulder, Potato Puree, & Yellow Chanterelles - A dual presentation of pork, with my personal preference going towards the oh-so-tender-and-crispy pork belly, over the pork confit. Definitely something to be eaten alongside the rest of the dish for the proper balance of flavors, so make sure you get a mouthful of potatoes and mushrooms alongside that pork! * Lamb Shoulder, Onion And Almond Marmalade, Carrot & Coriander Puree [ http://flic.kr/p/dp6fuY ] - While still rather enjoyable, this was probably the most lackluster part of the meal, due completely to the fact that the sauce actually made the dish a bit too sweet. Though that aside, the lamb shoulder was prepared wonderfully, to the point of being melt-in-your-mouth tender. We also had a white (to go with the salmon) and red (for the pork and lamb) wine suggested to us by our waitress, both of which went perfectly with the food - and this is coming from someone who still doesn't completely appreciate wine yet. Of noteworthy mention is that they let us split a glass of wine by actually pouring two very generous servings into separate glasses for us. ***Accessibility Info*** Venue - So, as mentioned when I started this review, Bouche is not incredibly wheelchair accessible. Their actual tables are all upstairs, with the downstairs area being limited to high bar seating. However, they apparently have a fold out table stored away somewhere, that they can bring out for these types of situations: just be sure to let them know when making your reservation. Excellent food in a small, romantic, intimate restaurant. The menu is short but intriguing, the wine list complete without being overly long. Best dish we had: an appetizer of Tartare. My friend took me to this place for my birthday. When we first walked into the restaurant, I was like... Hmmm is this really a nice restaurant that serves amazing food? As all we know, we should never judge the book by its cover! The free was great and I had the best dessert at Bouche that I never had before!!! We ordered 3 appetizer, but I don't quite remember the name of the dishes. - First dish, it's potato and a half cooked egg, doesn't look fancy but the way they used the spiced and the flavor was just unbelievable!! - Second appetizer, its green peas and some sort of broth. Again, it look super simple but the broth was amAzing!!! - last appetizer, we have this dumpling type of food. Great flavor and was delicious. Our main course was the steak. When they first brought the entree on, I was like, wtf? Literally just three pieces of small cut meat and garnished with some vegetables. But as I took the first bite of the steak with the sauce, it was amazing. The steak literally melt in your mouth and the flavor kept coming back to your tip of tungue. Lastly, we had this dessert, it's a pear dish. Not sure how they made it. But I almost don't want to share the dessert with my friends and just want to devour it by myself. Nice little spot we found while trying to find somewhere to eat when we couldn't decide what to eat. We ordered the pork belly, pickle platter, and bacon bread for appetizers. The pickle platter was pickled peppers, onions, and cucumbers. Some of them were very spicy so be warned. It also came with toast and a chorizo spread that was pretty tasty. I really enjoyed the bacon bread and would recommend ordering. For an entree I ordered the waygu beef which was delicious. Very tender! It came with beans and pickled onions with a balsamic sauce. It tastes really good with everything together. As for drinks I ordered the Lirac which I very much enjoyed. For dessert we ordered the custard that came with a dulce de leche sauce that was amazing. This dessert elevated my review from 4 to 5 stars. The custard had a little salt on it that was so delicious when combined with the sauce. Service was excellent! At the end of our meal the waiter brought out a glass of wine for my girlfriend and I which was very nice. It was a very sweet and an excellent dessert wine. Overall this is a good restaurant I recommend trying. It is very small intimate place for a romantic night out. I only wish I could have sat upstairs. read more
