This review is for upstairs seating at their flagship fisherman wharf location. We mostly eat downstairs and food is okay. This time we were not super hungry below was crowded and it was windy outside so decided to eat in upstairs restaurant which is comparatively upscale and had different menu options. Were able to get a seat rather quickly. Server got us some sourdough bread and fresh whipped butter which were good and asked us for drinks. We were not in mood for drinks so seemed like our server got very disappointed :) I guess as he suddenly became inattentive. Took a while for him to take our food order which we were ready even first time , it was a vegetable pizza and tomato soup. Order took a while and we hardly received any service as we asked for chilli flakes twice from a guy who first got us pizza to our table and then later to another server as ours was missing completely , so all in poor dining experience. My other major concern was hygiene at this place , I saw a server holding bread bowls bare hands and touching his shirt and then saw a cook/chef someone from kitchen staff using restroom , comes from the stall and walks straight out without bothering washing hands. The place to be if you're cold and hungry in SF's waterfront. Warm and fragrant sourdough bread and all sorts of baked goodies you can watch as you think of what to have. The menu in the outside cafe is quite limited-- with soups that can be served in bread bowls, salads and sandwiches. Was hoping there'd be seafood fare but no such luck. But because I was famished, I settled for this restaurant that didn't have a wait (compared to the upstairs, more upscale version that had a wait to be seated). After a while the food arrived. The bread was sooo good! Very well baked. I staved off my hunger mostly with the plain bread, because the chowder it came with was just not very tasty other than salty. It had a flat taste. It had lots of chopped potato, was creamy, had some clams, celery, but it truly tasted flat. I wanted so much to like it, but I gave up on it. My BP just can't take that much salt. The upstairs and downstairs restaurants were both full so maybe we caught them on an off day? I I'll try again but this time with lower expectations. read more

I literally went through three security lines to get this bread... and it was awesome. I failed to realize how far terminal a is... spoiler: it's far. For some reason I'm always craving a nice hot bowl of soup before a flight so right after going through security I made a beeline for Boudin. I got my customary New England Clam Chowder to go and was pleasantly surprised when my order came out in the next two minutes! There's a bunch of long tables for communal seating in the Boudin, and also a little area with tables right outside in front. It was pretty busy when I went but I was lucky enough to snag a table right away. The soup itself was creamy and rich, the same Boudin quality you'd get anywhere else. If you place your order to-go, they'll separate your soup and bread bowl so that the bread doesn't get soggy. In general, satisfied my soup craving and I know I'll be coming back every time I fly out of the international terminal. One complaint is that the layout is a little disorderly--the Boudin is in the same room area as a Peet's, and sometimes when nobody is manning the Boudin cashier you just place your order at the Peet's. There was a decent number of confused people milling about trying to figure out how to order when I got there because there wasn't any clear signage letting people know they could order at either counter. read more

This 1 star is for the treatment/lack of service we received from Ana working the Market register and treating us as if we stole food. Keep in mind this is a location where you order your food on a kiosk. We had a family of 5 ordering and grabbing and selecting things on the kiosk to include my children and after I paid Ana quickly asked for receipt and asked to review my order although she didn't ask anyone else for their receipts. Mind you, we spent over $125 in food and drinks and because my youngest grabbed parfait and fruit after I paid she quickly made us feel like we were trying to get away with free food and was very accusatory that the parfait and fruit were not on the receipt. I told her I was happy to pay for the items but not to treat my kids or people as if they're criminals when we are still in the store at the register and haven't even left. Again, there were other families there but we were targeted specifically by Ana. Shame on you Ana and shame on you Boudin for hiring people like Ana who is not customer service friendly and treats people poorly! Such big money making world famous establishment, charging high tourist price to a captive market, unable to provide its guests with clean restrooms in the premise??? Now the negative- While I'm enjoying my sandwich, the manager comes and sits down next to me, even though there are many empty seats all over he could have chosen. The cashier told her she needs to print another copy of the receipt and her coworker said "Oh the lady now wants a reprint of her receipt?" making wild assumptions. However on my way back home, I decided to give it a go since I've never had Boudin in SF. If I come back to this side of the terminal, I'll try it again to see if the service improved. Service: awful; although there was only 1 person in line for the sandwich line (3 were in line for coffee and pastries) it was an excruciating 15 minutes to finally place an order AT THE CAFE line. The 1 person ahead of me wasn't prepared to order and decided to ask a lot of questions. Apparently the cashier didn't know how to answer so a total of THREE employees gave their thoughts to the lady on EVERY sandwich, salad, wrap question; ingredients, texture, etc. Why couldn't the cashier take my order while her team mate answered the lady's questions? I'm so glad the employee at the cafe counter waived us over to take our order. At that time their was a line. I know of 2 customers leaving the store because of the inefficient line before the cafe employee stepped in. The inefficiency continued when my sandwich was made. The cashier joined another 2 employees talking to the same lady while her order was made while I patiently was waiting for my sourdough bread; remember, I placed my order at the cafe counter so I had to go to the bakery counter to get my bread and to the sandwich counter to get my sandwich. To add insult to injury, the employees at the sandwich area began to crowd because that lady was now insisting for her sourdough loaf bread to be sliced because when she was there a month ago it was sliced. It seemed it was against policy but the one in charge let it go. Went there for the first time.. showed my vaccination card and id to tour the museum and see how the bread is made. Workers making the bread were not wearing gloves , just masks. Love this place! Think of it as 5 great features in one. The quick service, bakery, and gift shop are downstairs. The gift shop is huge. I could have spent hours just looking. Pick up a shaped bread for a unique souvenir or gift: alligator, teddy bear, crab, or a holiday loaf. Plenty of seating on the west patio on in the breezeway inside. Head upstairs if you would like a more dine in experience. The free bakery museum is also upstairs. Great place to take the kids, or adults for that matter. The friendly guide felt like he could have been my grandpa, telling giving me the family history. Circle around to the back side of the museum to see the bakery in full swing. The public restroom is out back on the Oyster Hut building. The crab chowder in a bowl was really good. Love the bread. Chewy crust and soft on the inside. Looking forward to coming back.
