Clam Chowder in a Sourdough Bread Bowl
    Jon S.

This is right on the wharf, prime location! The inside is pretty spacious and has nice outside patio that's pretty spacious as well. You order at one of the cashiers and pick up in further into the bakery. We got the sourdough bread bowl and clam chowder! The bread: Wow, it was really soft and fluffy, great sourdough flavor and I personally really loved the bread and ate the whole thing with ease. The soup: The clam chowder was solid, great flavor and and tender clams (not too chewy/overcooked). I do wish I had MORE chowder with the breadbowl, perhaps maybe I could ask if they would do a deeper scoop of bread out or even asking for the soup on the side and do the bread scoop myself? Or order more soup! But either way, it was delicious, would totally go back

Clam Chowder in a Sourdough Bread Bowl and Classic Crab Sandwich

I love coming to this store. I am a big fan of sourdough so I love their bread, bowls. They are clam chowder bread bowls is always a classic. We came late at night so it wasn't as busy and our food came out fast. The seating is a bit random because it's inside of their store area for inside seating. I think this is just one of the big tourist spots to hit because the food is good and you get a great place to explore around.

It's one of those touristy places in SF, but I really think it's something you have to do while visiting. Boudin has grown so much over the years and this is still my favorite location. It's clean, spacious, and service is fast. For me, it's a perfect stop for lunch while walking down the wharf area. Of course with how big they've gotten, there's plenty of branded merch if you're looking for some souvenirs. The cons, no on-site restrooms available if you're doing café or casual dining. They direct you outside to the not so clean public restrooms. If you park behind the building, they'll validate parking for 1 hour. For food/drinks, they have a café, fast casual open-seating, and also an upstairs restaurant dining area. We opted for the fast casual for multiple visits here. Ordering is easy in person. Staff is helpful if you're not sure what to get. Other than that, they're fine, don't expect exceptional service. We tried their clam chowder, crab chowder, beef dip and also their pizza over the course of the weekend. Price is what you'd pretty much expect around the area For two of us, I think the perfect items are to share a clam chowder and a beef dip. The chowder is creamy and has a unique flavor that we enjoy. The beef dip while simple, is delicious. The bread really absorbs the au jus so it's not dry at all. You have to get the chowder in a bread bowl. While at some point, there's only so much sourdough you can eat, it's really how you should eat chowder isn't it? We'll pass on the crab chowder in the future. The flavors just didn't hit right with us. The spiciness was off and it just wasn't our favorite dish. The pizza is good, seeing more and more places do the hot honey on pizza thing nowadays. It's good and a big portion. If there were more of us, it's a nice pizza to share. Overall, this is our favorite Boudin location to visit.

This particular Boudn is my very favorite. This location has a beautiful display of sourdough and other breads and pastries. Love the sourdough turtles, crabs and teddy bears and you can buy small ones and large ones and they have them on a pulley crank going around the Restaurant there's all kinds of food in sales items is just a really fun place to go to. As far as the food I have to say I absolutely love their pizzas their grilled cheese and of course the clam chowder in the bread bowl. This restaurant also has like a crab chowder and it's basically a walk up Window make your order and get a number and they call your name and then you take your your food and sit at a number of tables inside and there's also a corridor that's covered indoors outside of the main restaurant and a giant outdoor seating area with plexiglass walls to keep people from coming in or the wind from coming out of the birds from coming in and stealing your food. You can't beat their sourdough. It is a perfect five. My respects to the rest is pretty good. I always love coming here when I'm in the Pier 39 area.

We wanted to go here to try their famous clam chowder in the sourdough bread bowl. The place was super crowded, hard to find where to sit. Which I wouldn't mind much if the food would have been better. Sadly it disappointed me. The bread itself was fine, but the chowder lacked in flavor, it was like drinking a white bechamel with potatoes and some pieces of clam. I was expecting something else maybe with a different soup flavor! But there being so many good places to eat in SF, I wouldn't come back.

Soups were a bit salty and the bread bowl was made of mainly just bread (the soup was more like sauce on top). Not a whole lot of seatings indoor - a bit chilly to sit out. You have to ask staffs for utensils and napkins. Bathroom across the parking lot.

We got the tomato soup in a sourdough bread bowl, which was warm, comforting, and perfect with the crusty bread. I loved tearing off pieces of the bowl as the sourdough soaked up the soup. We also tried the tomato focaccia, topped generously with tomato sauce and green onions. Soft and chewy with that signature sourdough flavor -- simple but really satisfying. And honestly, the cutest part was all the sourdough bread shaped like animals ! The teddy bear and crab were almost too adorable to eat. There are so many different shapes displayed around the bakery, which makes the whole place fun to walk around.

I've been here a few times, but never left a review. I came here with a brother, his wife, & their 4 year old daughter. It was their first time eating here. We ate upstairs because it had a better view of the ocean. Considering it was crazy busy and we just walked in, we were seated in 10 mins! We all ordered our own dish and pretty much ate all of it, except the little one because they have a good portion considering it's a "kid's meal". The food was good and the service was, also. It was pretty busy because it was a holiday wknd (Labor Day). I recommend eating here if you're in town visiting!

We made a reservation and came specifically for the clam chowder bread bowls, only to find out they had run out of bread bowls. When one of your signature dishes is clam chowder in a bread bowl, running out of bread is ridiculous and very disappointing. And we can see that they have bread through the glass and the other room.

The service at the upstairs restaurant was great. The food we got was flavorful and filling and I love that they provide sourdough with butter at the beginning of the meal. The dungeness crab spinach and artichoke dip had good chunks of crab and the clam chowder was filling. The salmon sandwich we had also was delicious. The food is a little pricey, but to be expected for SF touristy prices. I would recommend if you want to have lots of sourdough bread. If you aren't looking for a sit-down full service meal, the cafe area downstairs is a little cheaper too. Overall, a great, satisfying meal.

Boudin Bakery Cafe, a San Francisco classic. This is a must for tourists. As a local, though, I only come here with visitors. Boudin is a must-see if you're from out of town. There's a large viewing window outside where you can see them making sourdough. They have lots of cute creations. You can also smell the sourdough going in and out. Once inside, it can be a bit chaotic. They have a restaurant upstairs with full-service as well as a self-service spot downstairs with open seating. I usually choose the latter. You can order at one of the two counters and once your number is called, take your food to go or find a spot to sit. They also have lots of merch available. Service isn't the best; they do things more efficiently. So the only thing I really get is their chowder, which is nothing special. But you must try it in the bread bowl if it's your first time. The chowder is average in taste--same stuff from their cans. Definitely needs more seasoning and depth. The bread is fine, just sourdough, it's good to dip. Overall, in terms of quantity and quality, it's a good one-and-done spot. Boudin Bakery Cafe is located off Jefferson Street in Fisherman's Wharf. They have lots of other locations throughout the state. This one is a must-see if you're in San Francisco. Lines and waits can vary, but try it once! Parking is limited, but there are lots of options for public transportation.

    Zean C.

Casual place and super crowded. There's a long line to order your food and then good luck finding a table to sit at. This place at fisherman's wharf has no restrooms. You have to sue the dirty public restroom of the wharf. The clam chowder in the bread bowl was not good at all. You can taste the flour was raw and there wasn't much clams- mostly potatoes. I also ordered a Ceasar's salad and that too was a flop. For the 2 items - I pad over $45 plus a $70 parking fee. So yah - the most expensive and nastiest clam chowder in my life. Don't waste your time. It's a tourist trap.

I stopped by the flagship store because I really wanted to take home a loaf of sourdough. The selection is heavenly!!!! Lots of sourdough flavors and fun shapes of bread to choose from. I bought a loaf of olive bread ($8.03) and it was so worth it. I was trying to save it to pair with a charcuterie board at home, but couldn't stop myself from ripping off pieces and eating it in the car. Perfectly briny. This store is huge. You can sit down and eat at the restaurant upstairs and also shop for goodies to take home. There's a famous glass window from the outside where you can watch the bakers make the bread. Definitely touristy but still worth the visit! I also have to give a shoutout to their tomato soup in a bread bowl. It's my favorite.

I miss real sourdough bread and pretzels (I now live in Colorado) I will be in the bay area next week and want to bring both sourdough Bread and pretzels back to CO, how long would they last, do I need to freeze them?

No idea. But if you rent a car, make sure to get a car with CA license plates or you will have your car broken into. Also, make sure not to leave any bluetooth devices in the car. The criminals have scanners that find bluetooth devices no matter how…

    Any vegan options?

I believe their bread can be considered vegan, as well as their tomato soup (there wasn't any cheese in mine).

Do you have clam chowder without bacon?

I don't have any bacon in mine there! In fact I've never seen anyone with bacon in there's in my group…

Are proof of vaccine still required as of 4/2022?

I don't think so. They didn't ask me.

Is the rustic tomato soup sweet or more savory?

Do you need to show a vaccination card to dine in?

No, not at the one on fisherman's Wharf. They have outdoor seating.

Is the outdoor seating (in the parking lot) seat yourself?

    Yes it is.

Is there parking available for customers? is there a charge?

There's parking in the parking lot where they used to charge. It's now open to the public for free. There's construction on the streets, and with covid19, fisherman's wharf has not been busy ! Still fun to walk around though, and there's a handful…

When does their Sunday lunch menu begin?

Are pets allowed in the outdoor seating area?

No pets while I was there.

    Does it have wifi?

No, this place does not have WiFi

How fancy/casual is the upstairs sit down?

It’s casual. Not white table clothing or anything. There were people wearing shorts.

Do they have any gluten free bread?

No where did I see anything GF I looked up and downstairs. If they offer it I didn't see it. It is posted Gluten is present amount other allergens, which is a given going upstairs, taking a small self guided tour. You can find that information and…

    Do you need a reservation?

There was a wait for the upstairs sit down restaurant but the downstairs cafe of course is so different. I don't know about the apps where you can make a reservation or about calling Boudin ahead of time. I don't think so though. Their website?

They still have the crispiest, most innovative pastries every month, and September 2026's menu blew me away. I know the line can be long, but they are working as fast as they possibly can and there's so much love in the pastries that the wait is worth it. ------ FOOD (SEPT 2026): 1. EGGPLANT DANISH (5/5) One of the must unique pastries I've ever had. I would say this is a must try for this month, especially if you like Middle Eastern flavors. The eggplant was super tender and very easy to bite through. But what I appreciated the most was the layers of complexity with this danish -- zhug below the marinated eggplant, and not only whipped goat cheese and harissa on top, but also sprinkled pomegranate seeds on top for added acidity and brightness. 2. APPLE VANILLA BEAN CRUFFIN (5/5) Apple pie in a crispy croissant muffin! Fresh apple pie filling is extremely generous, and most importantly, the vanilla bean diplomat cream on top was actually a nice balance to the sweetness of the apple compote. A great fall pastry for this month. 3. CORN PROSCIUTTO CROISSANT (5/5) A super familiar and comforting flavor. The corn and basil bechamel sauce was addictive and abundant. It will never cease to amaze me how their pastries can be full of fillings like this and not get soggy. The "prosciutto" in this had the thickness and texture of deli ham vs. prosciutto (I actually prefer ham to prosciutto), so it was extremely tender and easy to take bites. 4. BROWN BUTTER CORNMEAL TWICE BAKED (4.5/5) I love their twice baked croissants so much because they have the perfect flakey texture. The chocolate filling brought this entire croissant together. I thought the cornmeal frangipane was super creative and interesting, but at the end of the day this wasn't a 5/5 for me simply because I ultimately decided that I would have preferred a smoother texture to a grittier cornmeal texture. But that is simply personal preference, and the flavor was still phenomenal. 5. TAHINI COFFEE PAIN AU CHOCOLAT (4.5/5) Great pain au chocolat. Full of both tahini and chocolate filling, though didn't get as much of the coffee flavor. Extremely flakey pastry. I've had other tahini chocolate croissants so this isn't the most unique flavor combination, but this was one of my favorite renditions of this combo. 6. RICE ROLL SPECIAL BUN (4.5/5) A divisive one! Butter & Crumble is exception for the quality of its crispy, flakey pastry, and this item has very little of that. It's extremely soft and possibly soggy, but not in an unpleasant way at all. In fact, I actually loved how soft this item was because the pastry didn't outshine the quality and flavors of all the other ingredients in this. The spicy chili oil on top was chef's kiss on top of everything. I've never had a pastry like this before, and I don't think I ever will again. Bravo. ------ ENVIRONMENT / AMBIANCE: * Same space as always, and the line was only 1 hour last week, which was totally doable * They're really emphasizing staying quiet to respect the people in the neighborhood, so don't bring any loud friends here! ------ SERVICE: * The ladies here were lovely as always! One of them was the outdoor coordinator who visited everyone in line with the latest menu and information on ordering so you could plan ahead * Was very fast getting a box full of pastries, but if you order a drink, expect to wait a little longer inside since those are made to order

Their freshly made bánh trung thu are incredibly delicious! The mooncakes are soft, smooth, delicate, and packed with flavorful mixed nuts, salty egg yolk, and winter melon, all wrapped in a soft, golden-brown crust. Every bite is heavenly! My personal favorite is #3 Ham Mixed Nuts. It's tender, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. For the best experience, enjoy them while they're still warm--fresh out of the oven, they're even better! Cash only No seating inside No regular entrance--orders and pickups are done through the outside metal sliding gate. And be careful not to stick your face too close...you never know when that gate might come sliding toward you! If you're a mooncake lover, Golden Gate Bakery is definitely a must-visit in SF Chinatown. We highly recommend the mooncakes, but unfortunately, we can't give 5 stars because of the hostile customer-service environment. Delicious mooncakes Customer service Overall Worth the attitude for the mooncakes! Go NYU! Go Violets!

A must stop if you're in SF! The two things you have to try are the pineapple buns and egg tarts…read more There's no actual pineapples in the pineapple bun. It's a bun with a crunchy topping on the top and so it looks like a pineapple. The top coating tastes very similar to butter shortbread cookies from the Hawaiian's Honolulu Cookie company. The bread is super soft inside and warm, and when they put a slice of butter inside, it melts into the bread. It's also kinda chewy inside like a mochi consistency. I recommend the original custard pineapple bun. The salted egg yolk pineapple bun was also good but I think it should have had a little more filling. If you're craving savory pastries, the bbq pork pineapple bun is also good. The croissant egg tarts are fantastic. The custard tastes like a Portuguese egg tart but the crust is super crunchy and flakey. There's a caramelized sugar coating around the crust which makes it extra crispy. Highly recommend! Next time I'd probably order online and come for pickup. There's two lines and they're both pretty long: ordering and pick up. Btw they take only cash if you order in person. They said the wait was 15 more min for egg tarts and we ended eating almost 40 min :/ so prepare for the lines and wait time.

I've been here a few times and this time I remembered to take photos of the pastries before digging in! We tried the ube twice-baked croissant, ham and cheese croissant, curry potato bourek, and the spicy chicken pepper sausage croissant. Every pastry was perfectly flaky on the outside while staying soft and buttery on the inside. My favorites were the spicy chicken pepper sausage croissant and the ube twice-baked croissant. The savory pastries were packed with flavor, and the ube croissant struck the perfect balance of sweetness without being overpowering. I also love that they offer unique pastries you don't find at most bakeries. The café itself is small and cozy, and the staff were warm and friendly. It's usually packed, but we arrived at the perfect time and were able to grab everything we wanted before they sold out. We'll definitely be back to try more of their delicious pastries!

After picking up a friend from the airport, going to Neighbor Bakehouse was a clear choice. The 101 was undergoing construction, and this was off the 280/Third street, so a very easy ride from SFO. Parking gods were smiling at us, as we were able to park on Third, just half a block away. Line gods also smiled upon us, as there were only 2 people in front of us and, by the time we ordered, 5 people behind us. Coffee god hated me and decided no coffee. Can't win them all. We ordered an assortment of pastries, all of which were good. I usually go for the ginger pull-apart and was intrigued at their savory pull apart. To be honest, it wasn't as good. It was still delicious, but it was less pull-apart and more fall-apart. That being said, tacos fall apart and they're still delicious. My friends over-ordered, but both really liked the pastries they got.

The line around noon wasn't too bad, and it moved quickly since most people in line knew the drill and had their items ready to go. I ordered the slice-of-the-day, which turned out to be a mushroom + spinach + mozzarella combo. I placed my order at the counter and was handed a hot slice of pizza about five minutes later. I was fortunate to land one of the limited seats inside the bakery, although, there was also plenty of bench space in the parklet outside. The pizza crust was thin and crispy - with just the right amount of chew - and tasted slightly of sourdough. Topping-wise, the mushrooms were abundant but not overpowering; however, I wish there had been other vegetables to balance out the flavor. Paying less than $5 for a generously-sized slice (adorned with a mini slice on top) felt like a bargain, especially in SF. I would definitely make the trip back out here to give the pizza another try and to pick up some of the other baked goods.
