My Son was craving some delicious white soup (clam chowder) so I of course had to get my favorite turkey cranberry we ordered to pick up and the lady who helped us when we checked out (I believe her name was Marissa)... Was BEYOND amazing. So sweet upbeat happy and had everything perfect and ready when we arrived... She even gave my son a special "fish" sourdough fish shaped bread which made his day! The sourdough bread on the sandwiches are really hard and tough to bite. The sandwiches are also pretty bland. Not much flavor but it's ok. The clam chowder has a weird flavor to it and it's not that great. The chili is much better. The bread bowl is good. The parking is limited. I stumbled in here on a casual day expecting to have a regular lunch. The service was so good that it turned my dull day into a great day. I came in to try their new salads, so I ordered the chicken kale and the banh mi (one for now, one for later). The transaction was smooth and I felt welcomed by the employees. I told the employee I would be getting my banh mi to go, so I wanted the dressing on the side. I was expecting for some kind of mistake to occur since I was both dining in and taking to go. They brought both my orders, and everything was just so perfect, I couldn't find a single fix I needed to make. The banh mi was packed perfectly as per my instruction. My comments may sound bizarre, but for someone who eats out so often, you get tired of people messing up your order. Anyway, onto the important stuff: the salads were GREAT. They make a salad so much more than a salad, and it makes me want to go there every day. I've been trying to eat healthier, but I have also been getting tired of eating salads. I did not feel that way today! I feel like I could eat these salads every day and never get tired of them. I also don't feel like I wish I ordered something more tempting. The food was healthy and delicious. Their chicken is textured wonderfully; it wasn't gross with any chewy parts (ew). There's nothing special about the clam chowder at Boudin SF. It tastes fine, but there's not much to discern it from the standard clam chowder recipe which we've been eating out of the can for generations. To be honest, if somebody told me the soup came out of a can, I wouldn't be surprised. But then something magical happens when you take a freshly backed sourdough bread bowl, put the average chowder inside of it, and let it sit for a little while. Then add some freshly ground peppercorn on top? What happened to my generic soup? In its place is a meal that I can savor to the last bite. All sorts of interesting textures and flavors: the mushy soup soaked bread parts, the crust dipped in soup parts, finishing the soup and just taking the whole thing and eating it like a sandwich parts. Wow this food is a lot of fun to eat. A little bit of ingenuity goes does so much to elevate an otherwise boring dish. Whoever invented the bread bowl is a genius. read more

You can actually buy the turtle shaped rolls. The eyes are little raisins. The kids love to bite the head off, then the legs and tail, enjoying every piece of the crusty chewy bread. One of my favorites is the chili in the bread bowl. It's more than a hearty meal in itself and don't think that you won't eat the bowl. You tear and bite and tear and bite and before you know it, it's entirely gone. Clam chowder in bread bowl is also good. Spring salad is so good with balsamic, goat cheese and nuts. However, there was nothing uber exciting happening in my mouth. I like flavor explosions. I ordered the tomato soup. It was okay. I have a chef friend who makes an amazing tomato bisque. Actually, I had it last Easter in a cute lil bread bowl. That was bomb! This is several notches below that... I'm just being honest. The decor was nice, the workers were friendly... but I have enough friends... When I'm writing Yelp it's cause I'm looking for more fatness... Great food, mediocre service. I really enjoy their clam chowder bread bowls. So good! Their Chili bread bowl is also excellent. The timing of receiving your order is the only issue. It hasn't been uncommon for the food I order to come out 10 minutes before or after everyone else at the table. There is no consistency. Similar to other places in the area, you'll want to try to beat the lunch crowd as it really packs up and seating becomes hard to find. Also, they have a reward program where you can receive a free loaf of their bread each month. Yum. Overall, the food definitely is very enjoyable. Found this location through a co-worker of mine as I used to only go to the one in South Coast Plaza (which is equally excellent). The line can be pretty long if you go after 11:30am so i suggest you come early if you want to avoid the lines and get a table. I ordered the chicken pesto and clam chowder bread bowl combo. The chicken pesto is on the ubiquitous Boudin sourdough bread which is crispy on the outside and ever so soft in the inside. The pesto sauce was the real flavor kick that compliments the chicken very well. The claim chowder is great as always and consistent every time I eat it. They have a wide variety of bread you can purchase to take home, like any Boudins and the great service that accompanies your order. Highly recommended but come early! read more

This is one of my favorite places to go for clam chowder in the irvine area. I always get the breadbowl with side salad combo and I always thoroughly enjoy it. For less then $10 it is a solid meal, its tasty and fresh and the bread is always delicious. I am a big bread person. To me, the bread always has to be soft and just right else it is not worth the extra carbs to ingest. The soup itself was a good consistency and the clam was just right, not overly clam-y. I tried a few places in SF and I found I dislike the strong clam-y taste I have found elsewhere. Subtle please. The only qualm I have with this place is the parking can be a hit or miss. It shares the same parking lot sort of with Souplantation, and during lunch time, the parking lot gets crazy busy. read more

At first when I went here, it seemed a bit familiar. Then I realized I had gone to the restaurant in San Francisco. The soup bowls (with clam chowder and beef chili) were really good (5 stars) although I wished for a bit more soup. I also had their chicken pesto sandwich (4 stars), which I thought was also great except for the density of the bread it was placed in. I almost felt like I was eating beef jerky by the way I had to rip the bread with my teeth. That being said though, the contents were great. I would definitely recommend the place is you around, especially on a rainy day, like the time I went. It was some real good comfort food. I ordered the butternut squash soup and half sandwich (turkey and cranberry) combo with a rustic (I think its called that) bread bowl. I decided to try this place on my lunch break because they're close to my new job. The place was busy; however, the staff was very friendly. When you walk in, it smells of sourdough, in fact, you can see them making the bread right there. I ordered the BBQ Burger. After a short wait, I received my to go order. As I unwrapped the foil, my eyes bulged; a 1/3 lb juicy hamburger topped with melted sharp cheddar, onion, lettuce, pickle and BBQ sauce on a sourdough bun. The burger was cooked perfectly. Come to this location simply to get loaves of bread. My son LOVES the lunch box bread while I get the 2lb french loaf for my wife and I. Nothing like getting bread that was baked on premises! This was was sooo good. I want to say that their clam chowder here is just like the one in SF, and the sourdough bread bowl was just as good as well. I had no problems with service or the servers..they were all very friendly, we got our food very fast and the servers came around a few times asking if everything was ok. The only thing I was disappointed with was their canned clam chowder...my expectations were already kinda low, but it was definitely no where near their clam chowder they serve in the store...it has waaaay too much potato..so I wouldn't recommend getting the canned chowder. What can I say, I was introduced to Boudin by one of my co-workers from up north when she came down for a visit and I've been hooked ever since. Yummy bread, their tomato and butternut squash soups are great. The clam chowder and chili are good, not great. The service is hit or miss (at this location, the one in Santa Ana is consistently awesome). I've ordered lunch here for my office and picking up was chaotic. I never want to order lunch for our office again if I have to pick it up (it was too late for delivery). They were so disorganized, rushing, and giving half-assed service. I also swooped in here another day around noon-thirty and they were out of Doobies or Doozies or whatever that little cookie-cream-sandwich is. How is it possible? That's not even the full lunch rush and you're out of your popular item? "They only make a certain amount each day". NO BUENO! I had to settle for a Snickerdoodle and left feeling empty. read more

See, initially I was reluctant to come within 10 feet of Boudin -- its association with (the tacky) Fishermen's wharf in San Francisco had forever scarred my mind. But I'm also not ashamed to admit that I was wrong. Everything changed when I met the BLT sandwich. (peppered) Bacon & arugula? In a sandwich? With sourdough & olive oil?Are you kidding me? Boudin SF is awesome. Also awesome are the multitude of cookies baked in-store (oatmeal & raisin is by far the best -- but I might be biased). Upon tasting my sandwich this was going to be a 3-star review. The bread is decent, there's just a limit to how much I can love high-level cafeteria food. Ordering and serving at Boudin is a sort of no-man's-land between fast food and a real restaurant. My sandwich was ok. Apart from the bread it was ingredients anyone can just buy at a Ralphs and make at home. Nothing special, but tasty. The side salad, which I presume I paid money for, was pathetic. I believe they used a vinaigrette to visually camouflage the brown spots on the old, limp lettuce. There is nothing "fresh" about the salad, for it had obviously been stewing in dressing for quite a while before it was slopped onto my plate. Very poorly done. I'm more irritated that they presume their customers are too stupid to notice. p.s. They "proudly" advertise that they exclusively use Harris Ranch beef. Have you ever been to Harris Ranch? Have you ever driven by it and smelled the cows there? Have you ever smelled healthy cows?
