was really disappointed with my experience at this Boudin location in Irvine. We ordered a French Dip, a Mediterranean sandwich, clam chowder, and chicken chowder. The bag was even labeled "HOT," but everything arrived cold. The sandwiches lacked freshness, and the soups were cold enough that they needed to be reheated. For the price we paid, I expected much better quality and attention to detail. We're staying at the nearby hotel while our apartment is being repaired, so we were hoping for a comforting meal. Instead, it ended up being one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences we've had in a long time. I don't usually leave negative reviews, but serving cold food that is supposed to be hot is not acceptable. Listen I am a massive sucker for San Francisco sourdough. In this case I happen to know the brand Boudin is from San Francisco and so I was super excited and convinced my friends that this is where we were going to have lunch. They happily agreed and we all went overboard. I even bought a baguette that I ended up bringing home with me on the plane which is kind of funny and frankly by the time it got home it was hard which was sad. I was in town for a conference though so it kind of makes sense cuz all food was provided for in the conference. Back to the review of the restaurant.. The location was very clean and it was very clear that you walked up to the register and or the mobile kiosks and placed your order. In my case I wanted to speak to the attendant at the register and he was super nice and friendly even though he was super young. And didn't really understand customer service frankly however he was super friendly. Said he couldn't answer most of my questions but that was okay. I got a flatbread pizza strangely a baguette and a bread bowl of soup. The soup came out hot and honestly it was just fantastic to dip the bread into the soup and eat it that way that's my favorite way to eat it and it was broccoli cheddar soup which was very good. Not as good as Panera but definitely very good. The pizza was just average don't waste your time with that this is obviously not a pizza place in the dough didn't even taste like sourdough. The sandwiches that my friends got were also fantastic. The bathrooms were clean the dining room was clean the self-service beverage area was clean. I didn't order a beverage but I was able to get a glass of water very easily and they were super friendly about the whole thing. Normally I love Boudin, but this location just misses the mark. Upon walking in, we noticed nobody at the front counter. We were the only people in line but someone walked past us and found an employee on the online orders counter to ask for change, so that summoned him to come to the register. Right after, he took our order. My daughter always gets a kids meal and she likes the fun seasonal sugar cookies so she asked for the Valentines cookie. We were told the options are only apple sauce or a chocolate chip cookie. At other locations we have been able to choose any cookie, so when did this change? Needless to say, she was disappointed but still got a cookie so it's hard to complain. The food was just OK. I love the butternut squash soup so I grabbed that with a half caprese sandwich (their "pick and pair" meal). The sandwich was pretty good! The soup felt like it was missing something, like it was underseasoned. Disappointing. The kids broccoli cheese soup was the best soup at our table, and the tomato soup was fine but the croutons were bland. Inside is quiet and was mostly empty while we were dining. There is no outside seating. After a disappointing visit, we decided not to come back to this location. We will drive a bit further to go to better locations that we have preferred. The lack of options for kids really brought things down. At other locations you can swap the cookie for any cookie, and they have apple juice, milk, or sometimes cranberry juice to drink. I ordered a sourdough loaf to go, and the friendly cashier asked if I wanted it sliced or whole. I usually request sliced, bc they run it thru a machine and every slice is uniformly cut. Fresh Boudin's sourdough bread is always delicious. It is crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. You can eat it straight out of the bag if it's fresh, but otherwise, a quick toast in the oven makes it good as new. It also freezes very well if you can't finish it right away. read more

This is a long established sandwich shop here on Main in Irvine. I have been coming here for at least fifteen years or more. However, it looks like management has changed. They have changed the menu and the decor. They have also attempted to fool its customers by offering an inferior product, and that does not make me happy. They have decided to swap out their delicious maple-brown sugar bacon with thin, low quality bacon. Yes, their incredible BLTA sandwich is now ordinary, mediocre, and over priced. I would pay any price for the old bacon BLT which was three or four inches thick, not a half inch thick like it is now. These types of management decisions save a few dollars at the end of the week, but lose thousands because of customers like me who don't like to get fooled. Without a doubt this is one of the best restaurants for a quick bite. The prices are excellent plus once each month when you eat there or just purchase pastry, you get a free loaf of their famous sourdough bread, but only when you you sign up to their website like most restaurants. The soft part of the bread was yummy but unfortunately the crust is hard as a ROCK. The crust was absolutely inedible and I had to tear it all off because it was so hard and chewy. I couldn't even bit into the sandwich because of it. This really knocked the rating down for me because after I ripped off the crust I was left with a tiny sandwich. Several Boudin SF places popped up, but we were closest to this one. Why Boudin SF? Sandwiches and Sourdough bread and memories of San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf. This location is not very large, and we see patrons having their lunch. A young lady helped us with our orders. A Sourdough loaf filled with creamy tomato soup for the lovely missus. She loves any soup laden with tomatoes. The Sourdough bread bowl was just the right size. My order was different, no soup laden bread bowls, but I see a sandwich made on Rye toast...and it has Pastrami filling.. I should have paid more attention to the sandwich ingredients.. that first bite of Pastrami was confusing. A runny Coleslaw and was there bits of bacon in there? I ate the sandwich but I would choose something different next time. However, it came with a nice side of salad with croutons and a light dressing. We helped ourselves at the soda machine for sprite and lemonade. One of three restrooms was out of order. We had luck parking by the adjacent barbershop. Talk about challenging parking, there is limited parking slots right outside this Boudin SF - Irvine location, there's some additional parking inside the ramp to the side of this building, but the spots can be tricky to get in and out. The wait during lunch can be a bit intimidating. The last time I went, the self-order machine was done and there was a ton of people waiting for their to-go orders that I ended up walking away. I have tried the clam chowder bread bowl, and the soup itself is relatively delicious, the bread bowl can be overwhelmingly large to eat, so most of the bread bowls actually get tossed since the soup to bowl ratio is limiting. There's a decent amount of seating indoors, and limited seats outside. The tables aren't promptly cleaned and I witnessed other guests wiping down the counters or moving dirty dishes to other tables. Again, this was during the busy lunch rush, so all the employees were more focused on making the food than cleaning tables. If you do plan to come during lunch, just plan ahead of time, even though I ordered ahead online, I still had to wait quite a while and had to check in with a worker to get my food. read more

When I saw the sign while driving by this location I yelled, "We have to stop and get my bread!" Instead we ended up eating lunch there and I left with no bread because I forgot! I got their sandwich/soup combo. The clam chowder was mostly clean, but there were a few bites that helped polish my back teeth. It wasn't too salty and the consistency was good (not too watery). It also featured lots of clams! The Pesto Chicken Sandwich was a bit disappointing. Firstly, only half the sandwich had the "pesto" on it. And I put "pesto" because I don't know if it was pesto (the spread was white, not green). Also, the sauce only covered half the sandwich (and this half was tasty), so the other half was very dry. The bread was also a bit hard. And how does the bread taste? I think the Boudin's in SF is better. Maybe because you travel all that way and eat next to the pier and hear gawking seagulls while trying to avoid being pooped on? Maybe it's the water? The climate? When they made it? No idea! Parking - There's three dedicated spaces in front of the restaurant, otherwise you'll have to park in the lot next to it which isn't a far walk from the front door. I've been here in the past couple of years and I remember the food being so much better. This time I decided to try the pizza, my oldest had the mac n cheese in the bread bowl and my youngest the burger. The pizza is nothing like described or pictured on the website, it is even missing the fresh mozzarella on top. Little Caesars pizza looked better and tasted better than this pizza. My son's mac & cheese bowl is kraft mac & cheese in a bread bowl that doesn't even taste like sourdough and to top it off my youngest burger is super dry and tasted microwaved!
