I am a food critic and secret shopper in the greater Atlanta area. I have written many reviews, but this one restaurant takes the cake! If I could give a zero star rating I would. This place is trying to serve nothing more than fancy bar food at ridiculous prices. When Branchwater first opened, it was great. Our most recent visit will definitely be our last. Problem 1: The waitress was off putting and had the personality of a wet blanket. No problem though, we all have our days. I let this pass. Problem2: The diver scallops came out ice cold, yet somehow, the risotto was piping hot, too hot to eat. Explain that. We took one bite from the scallop dish and sent it back. We didn't want to order anything after that because we were already severely disappointed. Problem3: When the bill came, they charged us for the scallop dish that was sent back anyway, when we asked to speak to the manager, he proceeded to argue with us and claimed that he charged us for the scallop dish sent back because half the dish had been eaten. Not true. Problem4: The manager then proceeded to laugh and amuse his other wait staff at our expense while making snide comments about other patrons of the restaurant. Problem5: We noticed on our way out that the health rating was a 91, but had not been updated since September 11th 2019. According to Georgia health standards law, these ratings are to be updated every two to three years and restaurants are inspected once or twice a year. This concerns me greatly for the health of Branchwater Patrons and the great folks and residents of Vickery Villages. My favorite place to wine and dine. I love sitting outdoors with heat lamps and a roaring fireplace. We live the fried oyster appetizer and the charcuterie board. For entrees try the steaks, burgers or lamb chops. Save room for a delicious dessert. We love the key lime pie. read more

I have never been so disappointed in a restaurant as my last trip to Branchwater. The hostess was extremely unfriendly and made us feel less than welcome that put a huge damper on the visit to begin with. For the price of the steak the least that can be done is cook it properly, not burn the outside of a medium rare steak that also wasn't rendered properly so it was just sinewy throughout the steak. My wife found a hair in her mashed potatoes and while we told the server that it was fine because we understand it happens it still would have been nice to have the manager come and apologize. We had called ahead to make a reservation for 11. My husband and I got there early so we had a drink at the bar. The bartender was great as well as the service. We went to sit down when our party arrived. We sat at 2 tables social distancing. All of the servers had masks on. We ordered the Brussels sprouts as a app. They came out a little too crispy but we all tried them. I had the Ahi Tuna entree which was delicious. My husband had the grouper fish special which others had as well. Our other friends had the filet. All was good and cooked to everyones liking. We tried this restaurant tonight and had an okay experience. The food was basically flavorful but the service and environment were subpar. First, our waitress, although very sweet, seemed to be inexperienced as a wait person and with the restaurant. She asked me to hand her the water glasses rather than get them herself. She told us to 'enjoy reading the menu' which seemed like a nervous comment. She did not know how much the salad on the menu cost. My fiance had pushed his salad plate to the edge of the table when he was done and she came to the table, told us our food was coming and left without taking the salad plate. She did not tell us there was an upcharge for substituions. BTW, our bill had two substitutions when we only asked for one. She came to the table a few times but didn't seem to notice I needed more water so I had to flag her down to get it. There was a band on the patio which we could hear inside the restaurant, which was a little disruptive to our conversation. It was somewhat noisy anyway and it was not full...I think they are social distancing still, which is good. The food experience was mixed. I asked our waitress what 'medium' meant on the salmon and when she said it had a tiny pink stripe, that sounded medium well to me so I asked to have it cooked slightly under medium rather than risk it being over cooked. It came out super pink and under cooked. I sent it back for '1 minute' longer on the grill and it took 12 minutes to get it back. It was better, but still undercooked for medium. She said the kitchen was busy and 'put mine to the side for a minute' before putting it back on the grill. Really? The sauce was delicious though and the salmon was fine. The andouille sweet potato hash was too salty...the sausage overpowered the sweet potato. On the other hand, the sweet potato fries my fiance got were to die for! The down side to his meal was he ordered his burger medium well and it came out medium rare. See the picture below...lots of pink. He didn't say anything to the waitress because the flavor was good, but it was not what he was expecting. Plus, there were no side salads to order so he had to order a regular salad. It came with tomato bacon dressing but neither one of us tasted anything that tasted like tomato or bacon. We will probably give it another try and maybe the wait person will be better trained. We went to Branchwater last night for my birthday. The waitress rarely checked in, our drinks were slow to come and she forgot to refill my children's drinks even after asking. My steak came out burnt and cold and it took 10 minutes to get the waitress over. We ordered a burger to replace the steak and that also came out burnt. After living in Cumming for fifteen years, we just now discovered Branchwater. I seldom post reviews on anything, but our first experience at Branchwater demands it. To cut to the chase, the two entries, Ahi Tuna and Sea Bass were the best we have ever had. Over the years we have lived in six states from New Hampshire to Texas and have traveled overseas several times. Our two entries were unmatched anywhere. Server broke the cork off on the bottle of wine, my son helped her solve the problem. Drinks we HORRIBLE. My wife ordered a cosmopolitan, they put no orange liquor tasted like lime only. Sent it back. Was told that the server "watched the bartender remake the drink" BULLSHIT. It tasted exactly the same. So she was either lying or the bartender was washing dishes last week. We started with the corn and crab gratin.... savory and delicious. Next came the entrées, scallops piccata for him and surf and turf for me. Both unbelievable! We rounded out the evening with Bananas Foster Creme Brulé... Enough to share, not too sweet, fantastic flavor. Since I am the drink aficionado in this couple... I started off with the grapefruit martini, had Zac Brown Pinot Noir with dinner, and rounded out the evening with a rose petal martini. All fantastic, rose petal martini a little on the sweeter side... Glad I had that last. Overall, we will be adding this to the regular rotation, and it is highly recommended! read more

Service is provided by a courteous and friendly staff. The food seemed direction-less. I ordered the NY. Strip med rare. It arrived closer to medium plus, with an un-imaginenative collections of veggies and a mash potato concoction . Short on flavor I was not impressed. Wow! What an amazing dining experience start to finish! We were going on a date night somewhere nice and I found this place right down the street from us on Yelp. We did not have reservations so it was a 45 minute wait and we sat at the bar. Two absolutely professional bartenders they were so busy but you would not be able to tell by the outstanding service they provided us. I had almost forgotten what a REAL bartender experience is supposed to be like. We were called exactly 45 minutes later when our table was ready. Our server was so informative, polite and cheerful. When she asked if we had been here before and we said we had not she gave us the full run down! Our food was excellent and the wine recommendations were perfect! Our compliments to the chef. I really want to love Branchwater but I never seem to have a really great experience. Food is always just ok, nothing crazy or mind blowing considering the prices are on the high side. We have even come for both family holidays and Easter brunch and everyone left just kind of shrugging their shoulders. There are much better restaurants in Alpharetta that we choose to go to instead. So first let me tell you that the review from Andrea R below is almost totally a fabrication. I was there that night (and 3 nights earlier when she came in, wearing the same clothes, and accused them of having her credit card from the rooftop bar- they don't have a rooftop bar and didn't have her credit card). Anyway, the risotto she's referring to with scallops are delicious. The risotto is cooked perfectly. Risotto should not be a sticky mushy mess Furthermore, rather than complain immediately (which any complaints at Branchwater are handled VERY PROFESSIONALLY AND IN FAVOR OF THE CUSTOMER, always!) she went ahead and ate the large beautiful diver scallops and then was upset when they wouldn't take the whole thing off of the bill. They even offered to just charge for the scallops. She was also not interested in a new risotto at this point. So she appeared to be highly intoxicated and after making a scene, her first date she was with proclaimed while leaving that this was definitely their last date. He was a nice guy and clearly embarrassed. As soon as she got home she started calling, yelling at the poor host and anyone who would get on the phone. She even threatened the classic "do you know who I am, I will ruin you". At that point yes, her constant and harassing phone calls were hung up Branchwater and chef Todd are the pinnacle of professionalism and the food is amazing. I eat there 3+ nights per week. I find myself wishing that there was a 2.5 star option for the rating of Branchwater. The food was very good with fair pricing and reasonable portions. Alone, it rates 4-stars. The service, however, rates 1.5 stars to which only the food allowed me to provide 2 in total. The restaurant is in southern Cumming with comparable Roswell/Alpharetta alternatives nearby. As such, a decision to eat here should be based solely on the food and convenience. So, what's wrong with the service? Well, my wife and I ventured in for a 7pm Friday evening celebration of my birthday. We were greeted by an under-dressed hostess, while another hostess and a male server who appeared to be unoccupied stood nearby. Lead to our table, the server from the front arrived to fill my wife's glass with water before later returning to apologize and also fill mine. Proceeding to take our drink order he noted that they had ten local craft beers on tap which are rotated. Apparently this is done too frequently as to warrant a printed list. Of those offered, while the selection was fine, they recognizably lacked any offering from the craft brewery with which they neighbor. Returning with our drinks, the server proceeded to flame lemon rind into my wife's drink and recount how he was proud to have learned the trick from a Michael Jackson book (not the singer). Interesting. As my wife then proceeded to order her medium cooked steak, the server went on to agree that this was the perfect temperature. My ensuing order of a medium rare steak, of course, warranted no such compliment. Ok, so nothing too bad, so far. Right? Assessing things up to this point, we understood our server as being interesting, liking my wife, and a bit full of himself. No harm done. Given the weather, I found a need to walk back to the front for sufficient cell phone signal as to pre-purchase our after dinner movie tickets. There, I found both hostesses and our server again standing around. He went on to regale the hostesses that he had heard that the perfect form of government was a benevolent dictatorship and likened the restaurant's management structure to such. Our dinner was then served by another staff member. When my lobster tail arrived without any butter, I was able to make the request only as our server hurriedly rushed past our table. We were not asked how we liked our meal or if we needed anything at any time during the dinner. After we finished, our server asked if we wanted dessert. When we responded that we did not, he proceeded to drop off our check, take my credit card, and return the check/card without a single word spoken. For a restaurant that is in a competitive situation, even in its immediate vicinity, one would expect more attentive service which expressed concern for and interest in its patrons. Instead, at Branchwater, it appears that one can only expect a pretentious, lackluster dining experience. At least the food's good.... read more

I'd really been looking forward to dining here - close friends recommended it as a great place with wonderful food and reviews on Yelp were pretty glowing...AND it's a Chef Todd Hogan concept restaurant. A friend's birthday called for a wonderful meal, so the four of us decided on Branchwater. Here are my observations about the experience: 1) make reservations - we did and were able to be seated right away 2) parking can be a challenge - it's located in a highly trafficked development with multiple other restaurants and close to large subdivisions 3) the wine list is solid but the prices are stunning: $13 for a glass of Peju Savignon Blanc...and $90 for a bottle of Frogs Leap Chardonnay. Although not a sommelier, I do know good wine and I also know the cost - a bottle of Peju will be around $20 and granted while Frogs Leap makes only limited quantities (being a boutique winery) a bottle of their Chardonnay runs about $35. Skip the wine - order a beer. 4) two of us got steak - both were cooked exactly as ordered and were excellent 5) I got Carmelized scallops over sweet corn risotto - and was disappointed. The scallops were overlooked and gritty. The risotto was utterly over salted and lacked the creamy texture the dish is known for...I managed to eat only a quarter of it. 6) we ordered dessert: butterscotch flan for us and cheesecake for our friends. We'd mentioned to our server that it was a birthday celebration and our friends' cheesecake was beautifully plated with a Happy Birthday message written on the plate. 7) service was prompt - on par with what you'd expect for a restaurant like this 8) this is not an inexpensive place to eat...be prepared for $75 tab for two people Branchwater is located across the street from the Polo Fields in Vickery Village. Given the large number of homes in the surrounding area, the restaurant will be commercially successful. Our first experience was a mixed bag ( steak = good, scallops = not), but we generally don't judge a place by just one visit so we'll try it again...sometime. read more

I like the restaurant, but last two times the service is seriously lacking. Our waiter walked away from our table while we were discussing the wine list, almost in the middle of a sentence. When I asked him why he replied... " I have 4 tables and someone was flagging me down.". So, our table is not important to you ? That will reflect in your tip. We come here once a week for the "burgers in the bar" menu. There is a special steak burger that changes each week or so, that is always outstanding. It has house ground ribeye and a couple other of steaks in there that I can't remember. Occasionally it will also have a wagyu cut in it as well. Always a solid good burger, one of the best in the area for sure! This last visit I tried the salmon BLT and it was awesome! The salmon was cooked perfectly and the dill cheddar was an outstanding addition to the sandwich. The fries are house made, as is the ketchup. The buns are not house made but they are good. You can tell Chef Todd cares about his food and his customers. He usually makes his rounds in the dining room checking on everyone's food/service. Chef Todd is doing it right at Branchwater. Really disappointed that the overall experience here wasn't better. The food was fine, but for $30/plate (without alcohol) you really want to have a superior overall experience. We walked away thinking "it was good, but really not great". A couple of things that went into my rating: 1. When we arrived we were asked if we wanted to sit in the bar even though we had an OpenTable reservation. We asked to be seated in the dining room though, and that's where we were seated. 2. The entry to this restaurant needs to be revamped. It's the same as it has been since the place was opened years ago as a neighborhood pub. You walk practically into the bar area and the black/white tile floor and dark wood paneling look dated and not very nice. The entry could use a refresh to make it feel more like a mid/upper-scale restaurant. More like the dining room which is very nice. 3. I told the server that I was on a low fat/low sodium diet and asked for the grouper, grilled simple and a double portion of asparagus. The grouper had been grilled in a pan obviously in butter. The asparagus had a lot of butter/oil and salt on it. My plate was pretty well swimming in oil. It tasted good, but probably wasn't great for my diet. 4. My wife ordered the grilled chicken with wild rice and mushrooms. It tasted fine, but really tasted like something that she makes at home. I realized it's just grilled chicken, but it was a pretty underwhelming dish. I so wanted this restaurant to be better. Absolutely the worst service in my life tonight. We waited over an hour and half for a table, just to make a reservation on open table. 4 minutes before our "reservation" the hostess let us know there was a last minute cancellation and we could be seated. Since we had been there an hour and a half and watched all the tables, she wants to sit us at one that had been available for 45 minutes...it was absurd that walk-ins were not seated at all, not worked in, just reservations only. We would have been better off to be told "hey all our reservations end at 830, we'll be seating you after that. So we finally get seated and order. Our waiter is horrible. Not only can we not hear him, he gets our salad order wrong, and charges us full price for lobster Mac & cheese which was not what we ordered...but at this point everything else was a bust so we let it slide. Lastly we ordered the hanger steak medium rare. It comes out basically raw, and not only was the temperature wrong, but there was a piece of cartilage running through the meat making it basically inedible. We told the server "hey the temp is off, but we can't even cut this meat because of this cartilage." He says sorry for the bad piece of meat and they'll fix it. 5 minutes later they bring us back our original plate, and original piece of meat, now roughly the size of a golf ball cooked well done. We normally really enjoy Branchwater; however tonight was a huge miss. At the end of it all, the kids working just kept saying....sorry we're really busy...and while I understand they were busy, having a crowd does not excuse bad service. The adult managers should be managing and knowing what is going on in the restaurant...it's not the hostesses or servers fault...management needs to step up and correct these issues. read more
