Really chill spot! A bit gloomy but it's perfect for a chill date night. They used to have poetry night here but idk if they still do. The muffins here are deeeeelecious!! Paired with some coffee!!!!! They have good small dishes as well that are pretty good. They're walking distance from everything so super convenient. All and all, top hangout spot for my Westheimer buddys. Will definitely be taking my business here for years to come. Open later than many places as well so that's a plus. read more

How have I lived in the loop for so long and not gone to this place? I love their chicken salad sandwich!!!!!!!! It's a flavor explosion in your mouth and not your granny's chicken salad! It's moist, creamy, and has a little bit of a kick with the peppers mixed-in. Add the avocado just to really push it over the edge. I am thankful that I can sub fries for a salad... which, by the way, is ginormous with higher quality greens compared to the Empire Cafe side salad. Sorry, Empire Cafe. Brasil is my go to coffee shop if I want to study AND eat delicious food. Like all the parking in the area, it can be pretty rough, but I think the end result is worth. My favorite drink is the Mexican Spice. They give you a HUGE cup of delicious coffee. The coffee has a nice spicy kick that goes smoothly down. The thing that separates Brasil from other coffee shops is definitely the food though. The triple apple pizza is to die for. The sweet and tart apples go perfectly with the savory bacon into a sumptuous creation. Truth be told, Brasil isn't the best place to study. My favorite restaurant has been ruined with a new *trendy* menu. I have gone here for YEARS-- it has always been my go-to. But this menu change is just the tip of the iceberg for a majorly abominable change to this once-amazing hole-in-the-Wall restaurant. After becoming thoroughly distraught by the heartbreaking menu transformation (they got rid of my favorite salad AND my favorite pizza), I was served a horrifically undercooked "medium-rare" steak that, not only looked raw and underwhelming in size (based upon the menu description), but tasted so indescribably bland and low-quality that I wasn't sure that I'd be able to finish it. I am so incredibly heartbroken that this once-wonderful neighborhood gem has turned into whatever this place is. It's unbelievably upsetting for a past patron coming back after a year living abroad. I used to be a regular at Brasil. I loved the cocktails, beer selection, and menu that changed seasonally. I spent so much money at that place and turned so many of my friends onto it but I have never been treated with respect by the owner, Dan. He's the man all the other reviews are talking about. You'd think maybe he'd read them and take a hint that you can't just be a dick to customers all the time. He patrols the restaurant like a cop looking for people who aren't actively eating or drinking and will harass them about buying more food or drinks. He's done this to me multiple times. The last straw was when I was sitting at a table watching my group's bags while my friends went inside and ordered, waiting for them to come out so I could take my turn to go in and get lunch. Dan came over and was so rude!!!! Like why!!!! I had been sitting for less than 5mins and was about to go inside to order!!! It's a shame that he's like this because Brasil is a gorgeous space with a lot of community involvement but I simply don't feel comfortable going anymore. My beloved Brasil: I don't even know where to start with writing this review. Brasil Cafe is and always will be my favorite Houston establishment. I've sipped coffee, and eaten the margarita pizza at this establishment since the 90's. I've read many poems and books here; listened to music I had never heard before, and seen local art I'd never seen before. I've even seen awesomely bad movies on the back patio, like BioZombie and The Room. I used to study at Brasil Cafe when I was in college. Brasil is also the place where I've written poems and essays that later were published. This review might change with time---only in remembering and adding reasons this restaurant means so much to me. The ambiance in Brasil is warm and inviting---perfect for a night of eating/sipping alone, or for bringing friends/family/casual dates. Here are a few tips so this review is beneficial and doesn't turn into a memoir: --Parking stinks, but so does street parking at any eatery/bar. It's worth it. --Order at the counter, take your number and have a seat. The bussers will bring the food to your table when its ready--there are no waiters at this place. --The inside dining area (in the center of the eatery) tends to be the noisiest---so don't sit there if you don't like that---or just sit there and enjoy the food and drink. --Brasil is beer and wine only. --Brasil makes a very nice and creamy creme brulee. --Pizzas: The margarita pizza is perfect (to me), but the chicken verde pizza runs a close second, gooey cheese and sliced chicken, topped with lots of fresh greens. If you order this pizza, ask for a couple of lemon wedges to squeeze over the greens on the pizza. So fresh and delicious! Brasil knows how to make a nice, hand-tossed pizza crust too. --The beer flights are a great value and they've got a good selection of beer. --Even a basic cup of coffee is rich and delicious. --The Baked Brie appetizer is awesome: toasted almonds, dried fruit compote that's soft on top of the melted brie---its delicious if you and a friend want a nosh, and some beer, wine or tea. --Salads: My two favorites so far are the Spinach Caprese (the fresh mozzarella is usually in bocconcini bites, or large cuts); and the Brasil House (the blue cheese crumbles pair so nicely with the sweet raspberry vinaigrette and toasted walnuts). Love this coffee shop/restaurant/bar? The back patio is amazing- its flourished with greens but also has a cool urban feel to it. The sangria here is top notch as is the chocolate mousse. The only thing I have to complain about is the manager- once a friend and I pushed two of their (very small) tables together for some room. I am a coffee-shop-studier. Coffee shops are where I get most of my work done, and I frequent shops all around Houston. This place is probably my least favorite coffeeshop I've been to in the city because of the dim lighting, lack of available outlets, loud atmosphere, and rude management. The waitress was nice, but my credit card did get charged twice, so just beware. I've only ever been here in the evenings to study. The coffee is good, but definitely overshadowed by the manager/owner's attitude. As soon as I walked in around 6pm, he immediately scurried over to talk to me and tell me that I couldn't take up the large table to study for just two people. I was waiting for a friend and we are law students, so our textbooks are HUGE and take up a lot of space; however, I decided not to pick a fight and figured they probably would get busier later on. I liked this place for the brunch, coffee, and atmosphere. Unfortunately, I feel the manager(?) or owner(?) was unnecessarily rude to me. I had a sport water bottle with me and he briskly charged up to me and demanded I get rid of the bottle due to an "open container law." Um...okay dude. I was caught so off-guard...there was no need to be rude about it. Later, I ordered an avocado toast (delicious) and barely finished, when the girl worker started immediately cleaning off our table and taking everything away. I walked my remaining mug up to the front to bus it myself, and the SAME guy takes it and freaking looks into and studies my mug. ARE YOU SERIOUS? After that moment I knew that I was done with this place. "Open container law"...really? I don't appreciate someone trying to flex their alleged "legal" muscles on a person that actually goes to law school and knows the law. And I especially don't appreciate being treated like a criminal when I'm just trying to get brunch and a coffee. Being kind goes a long way, and I just didn't get that experience at Brasil. Food and coffee are excellent, but the staff just ruin the experience. Customers and service should come first and if customers are not treated right, then it will reflect on your business. Since my last review I think I've come back maybe once or twice and have been just slowly getting tired of the place. I asked for marinara to be added to my white pizza and when it arrived there was none. I told the waiter who ASSURED me that it was there. I'm pretty sure I would notice if tomato sauce was in my pizza... I asked for a bowl of it on the side to dip my pizza in. It FINALLY came out once my pizza was already cold. Thanks... I guess. But I'm basing my review off of a Tuesday night visit, which is why it may differ from the other bad reviews referring to bad management and being asked to leave the restaurant...really? If you're contemplating whether to believe the good reviews or the bad reviews about the service, you're probably correct to believe both. I haven't experienced any "horror stories" in terms of service, but I do know that it is inconsistent. Recently, I came here with a small group for dinner and was pleasantly reminded by what a mouth-watering menu they have. Although it seems to lack the grilled PB&J some folks have recommended. I ordered the spinach and feta pizza and I must admit, it was even better than I expected. It took a little longer than my dining companions' orders to make, but it was worth it. It's a bit larger than what I'd deem "personal-sized." The crust was great, the sauce was not overstated and the spinach and cheese were well-balanced. One of my friends said the sausage and pepper quiche was just okay, while another said the black bean burger was really good. Personally, I tend to prefer the food here over Empire cafe. They have similar relaxed atmospheres...counter service, patio seating, dim lighting and are even located near each other. Sorry, I can't help but compare places that strike me as being similar. There seems to be a trend here where employees are forcing customers to buy. I'm trying to work and I swear our waiter came by 5 times to ask if I'm done. When I was officially done with my drink, they came by a couple of more times to see if I wanted to get something else. I always liked coming here often, but I'm have second thoughts after actually spending a whole day at the cafe to work. My favorite feature is the back outdoor seating where they had a cool dj show, and the space is huge! I really liked doing work at Brasil and their coffee and teas, but unfortunately after the most recent experience I won't be back. First off, I really enjoy working there because they have plenty of seating and they have a great selection of teas and coffee (I love their rooibos tea and my boyfriend loves the Mexican mocha - be warned the Mexican mocha is very very sweet). And all the employees there are great. However, our encounter with who we're fairly certain is the manager is why we won't be back. He made us feel very uncomfortable and it was clear he wanted us to leave even though we had only been there for an hour and there was plenty of seating left for the other customers. He kept moving around the chairs at our table multiple times, and asking us if we were done with our drinks. And when we told him we were not yet done with our latte, he told us "no one's TOUCHED that in a while" in a very condescending manner. Last time I checked, it's none of his business how quickly we finish our drinks. Overall, what started off as a typical experience at a cafe ended up being one of our worst experiences. If you're looking to just drink coffee instead of also ordering food, be warned, you may experience some unpleasantness. read more

I've had a sort of a love hate relationship with Brasil over the years. My first time there was in 2002 and it was a memorable evening for many reasons. Service was great , the place was cozy, and they had a band. Then in the following couple of years, the service turned down right hostile. Someone came to ask for a cup of water and the person behind the counter snapped at them about how the water wasn't free. Then there were a lot of complaints that the owner would ask people to leave if it had been a half hour since they got their order and were lingering around to read a book or something other than ordering. Now days it's pleasant...well that is if you can find a parking spot on the street. I don't understand how Agora and Empire cafe on the same street manage to have a parking lot (Empire's being very nice) and Brasil doesn't have a single spot. But I guess if it bothers you, take it up with city hall. read more

Came here for the first time yesterday, after perusing Yelp reviews (Thanks Linh N. and Gretchen P.!!) This establishment offers counter service, i.e. there aren't waiters and waitress that take your order, refill your beverage, etc. You wait in line at the counter and place your order, receive your drink and are given a number, then find an available table. While this is fine (it isn't really my cup of tea) but hey, I am eating here for the food!! I ordered the walnut, goat cheese and beet sandwich (see pics) Now, while the sandwich was VERY tasty, and I had no complaints with it--and this was my first time eating goat cheese!! I wasn't so blown away that I would make an effort to come back and try other menu items. NOTE: If you do not like pickled beets (like the kind from the can in the grocery store, you are NOT going to like this sandwich, as that is what they use! It was fine by me, I love pickled beets :-D All that said, I had a nice time and can see why patrons come to drink coffee, have a beer, food, etc. especially if they fall into the "See and Be Seen" group. Came here after searching for a place where I could get breakfast and free wifi in Houston without resorting to going to a Starbucks (which I ended up doing anyway). The wifi is kinda weak here, I couldn't pick it up from the corner of the restaurant. Ordered the eggs el Salvador. It had a chicharron (pig skin) filled corn cake, home made red chili sauce (guajilo sauce), chorizo (always a winner), a fried hibiscus flower (so small you won't taste it) and a poached egg. It came with a black beans and a generous side salad of chopped cabbage, carrots and cilantro. I think it was tossed in a slightly sweet and sour vinaigrette. Altogether, the dish blends really well together. The chorizo is salty and meaty, the sauce is peppery and has strong hints of paprika. The salad was crunchy, and when combined with the poached egg on the corn cake, gave it a really good contrasting texture and flavor. The most unique part of the dish was definitely the corn cake itself. Who would have thought of using chicharrones in it? But it works so well. The pig skin definitely adds a slightly texture to the corn cake, helping it hold together when it was soaked through and also make the dish just FEEL more substantive when you're eating it. They were also able to completely mask the flavor of the pork skin, which while others might say that's a bad thing, with respect to this specific dish, I feel is a positive. There were only really 2 flaws in execution that I noticed. I could definitely see was that the poached egg was cooked too much. The yolk wasn't runny like it's supposed to be. And I also felt that the black beans were underseasoned. For 9 dollars, it's an alright price. Looking at the menu, I can see that this place is a little expensive for a simple breakfast place. And to be honest, it's not a lot of food for that much money. But it does make up for that with the uniqueness of the dish. This is why I love yelp. Because without yelp, I never would have found this place, and subsequently tried such a unique dish. read more

As far as the food goes, Brasil speaks my language. The sandwiches are well thought out and fresh. I'm not a vegetarian, but one of my favorites is the Brasil Club - shaved beets, carrots, cucumbers, red onion, sprouts, walnuts, spinach, and garlic aioli on ciabatta. So fresh, crunchy, and tasty! Pass on the chicken salad sandwich, unless you like yours really sloppy wet. It was WAY too mayonnaise-y for me - couldn't do it! Pizzas are thin crust and tasty. Brunch is one of the better and more unique menus in town. Prosciutto eggs benedict are awesome, as are the Mexican-inspired brunch specials. Counter service is cold and efficient. I don't really mind this so long as the prices stay low and the line keeps moving. The only reason I don't go here more often is the atmosphere in the main dining room. Who wants to eat in a barren concrete box?? They really need to get some warmth and coziness in this soul-less space. The only thing worse is when they have a live band playing. The ear-splitting agony of snare drums reverberating off the concrete walls and floors was enough to drive me out. The patios are nice if you can nab a table... This is one of my favorite places for brunch, dinner or any other time. I have been eating at Brasil since 1999 but never thought to write a review until now. The atmosphere is very relaxed with low lighting and easy music on the speakers. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. Dining areas vary from the indoor area to one of two covered outdoor areas. Seating is plentiful so you can get settled in minutes. The food is always fresh and always good! You can choose from a variety of sandwiches, pizza and more. My current favorite is the turkey burger with sweet potato fries. Burgers and sandwiches can be served on a selection of buns and you can also choose one of several sides. Brasil has a wide selection of wine, draft and bottled beer but I always come for the the coffee. They make a cinnamon latte that is incredibly spicy and I can never get enough of it. Whenever I need to study for an upcoming exam, the cinnamon latte is set right next to me. If you are one for brunch then Brasil is the place to be! I recently had poached eggs served with salmon and toast. Very tasty! They serve mimosas but I always go for the apple juice. Now for the entertainment: DJ's play weekly on different nights in the main dining area. There are also poetry readings, movie screenings and have live bands and live bands. The DJ's usually play jazz or jazz inspired music for much the evening. If you have not experienced Brasil then the time is now. It's a great place to unwind after work or get the evening started. I come here sometimes to work on my laptop because I like the big tables and windows. However, the food is subpar and overpriced. You're better off at Common Bond across the street for brunch. Writing this review because at 3pm on a Saturday I got asked (read: told) to move tables for the "lunch rush." Keep in mind the only plugs are by the tables are against the wall and I had been here for a little over an hour only. The man joked that if I didn't move he would have the cut the internet to get people like me to move/leave. GOT IT DUDE, we are not welcome here. Keep in mind I bought a full meal and had not yet finished it either. He started moving my things, maybe to be helpful, but also sort of rude to do without asking. I'm writing this review and leaving, I'll find a more friendly overpriced place to work from in the future! I was here with a few girls last night, and we all enjoyed our lovely food and service. I recommend the walnut pear salad (which about half of us ordered). Although two of the ladies ordered pizza and were quite surprised by how large an $8 pizza could be! It all looked delicious and I know I went home with a happy tummy.
