Today was Sunday, and I couldn't imagine anything better than a steaming bowl of grits with melted butter, served alongside a traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, and a biscuit. Unfortunately, my visit to Paris Coffee Shop delivered the opposite. Something seemed off today at one of my usually favorite local breakfast spots. We smiled. We chatted. But a simple request for lemon with water seemed to be too much for our initial server, who passed us off to someone else. By the time we left, three different servers had been at our table. Still, I sat there holding onto the hope of warm grits and a lovely breakfast. What arrived instead was a bowl of watery liquid with tiny remnants that may have once dreamed of becoming grits, but never quite achieved it. The photo says it all: what I received was more like a memory of grits, floating in hot water. Paris Coffee Shop has usually been one of my favorite local breakfast spots, so I hope this was just an off morning. But today, I left disappointed, still hungry for the breakfast I had imagined, and tragically gritless.

It's like an explosion of savory Cajun goodness with every bite. The right amount of spice. Runny yokes with the gravy and grits and a bite of lightly breaded pork chop. After I received my order, I headed outside to enjoy my breakfast with some sunshine in their courtyard. The pastries are fine for a quick stop and appear similar to bulk items from stores like Costco. In the past, they sold a bottled cold brew that was great. They also feature a catering menu with Kenyan items such as Mandazi and samosas. Husband and wife Tweety and Patrice Angwenyi co-own the business. Apparently, they started the company in 2019 by roasting coffee in their one-bedroom apartment. Both owners formerly worked as high school educators before transitioning. Patrice grew up in Fort Worth's Historic Southside. Tweety was raised on a family-operated coffee farm in Kenya. Having lived in Kenya, I recognize him likely originating from an Ekegusii family in Kisii County. The real appeal of the business is the community the owners have built. While I am not part of the culture, their mission is faith-based, Black-owned. The owners define the word "hustle" as an acronym for "Help Us See The Light Everywhere". Beyond serving coffee, they host Saturday co-ed Bible studies, collaborate with neighborhood organizations, and mentor at-risk teenagers.
