    fried chicken & gravy
    Dan R.

Been a couple years but they're still delicious and generous. fine chicken and gravy, plenty of well0rowned potatoes, eggs a little cool and also the biscuit, But it is a hefty biscuit. Different set-up as you order at the counter then they beep you to come up when your plate's ready. (The place also serves as a good pick-up for 6 or so other "restaurants.") [[HIGHLIGHT]]Friendly service, well-lit place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Scott got their basic breakfast also with generous portions, like4 sausage links. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Good windows, light and colorful photographs[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

[[HIGHLIGHT]]My friend brought me here for a brunch let me say, I am not a breakfast person but this place right here, was cute.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It did what it was supposed to do. The food was delicious but could use a little more seasoning. I enjoyed my waffle and the bacon was chefs kiss. Upon finding an ant in my drink they could had done a better job at customer servicing but instead my drink was dump out and remade. Like what happened to "ma'm let's give you an extra drink"... sorry for your troubles; lol wishful thinking

It's awesome to see the collaboration between Bread and Ink Cafe with Waffle Window. You order at the front, sit down, and bust yourself. The brisket hash was hearty. The farm fusion wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be given the thrown on spinach and cherry tomatoes. It's nice that there was vegan batter though . [[HIGHLIGHT]]Definitely popular on a Sunday![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We were headed to a highly rated and popular Italian restaurant on Valentine's Day for a light dinner before a concert at Artichoke Music. But, because parking on/around Hawthorne is atrociously difficult we had to park several blocks away. As we began our several block walk, we spied Bread and Ink, and made the spontaneous decision to eat there instead. And, we're so glad we did. The pesto rotini with grilled chicken was delicious. The fruit salad was equally delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We very much appreciated the low noise level, that's uncommon these days, which allowed us to converse in a normal tone of voice.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff was friendly and prompt.

They were open and not busy around 10:25am on a Saturday, so we stopped in for food. The food is American diner quality and not something I would go out of my way to return for. The hashbrowns were very thin and dry, the ELO scramble was bland, didn't even taste pepper in it at first bite. The waffle was messy for a kid, the PB never firmed up leading me to believe it's PB sauce, but she loved every bite. They are not a table service restaurant. You order at the till, get a number and find a table, and pick the food up from the counter. It's more cafeteria feels to it than restaurant feels..

This place really surprised me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everybody's super nice and it was really quiet.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But that's what makes my head waitresses a little quirky but that's what makes it fun. I totally expected this to be one of those half-assed breakfast joints that charges top dollar because they're in the Hawthorne district. What an amazing surprise. They're biscuits and gravy is some of the best I've ever had in Portland. Better than grits and gravy, better than gravy over on Mississippi Even better than pine State. They make their biscuits fresh every morning and they're gravy fresh everyday. My wife got the Caesar salad with chicken and they actually have anchovy in the Caesar salad, you know, like a real Caesar salad. The chicken was grilled over what looked like charcoal and was phenomenal. I can't recommend this place enough. Give it a try

Food was yummy! Ordered an omelette with spinach and mushrooms with a side of cheesy hash browns and whole grain bread. Let me tell you..... it was so filling and delicious. Austin ordered a ham and cheese waffle that came with bacon and eggs. Food came out pretty fast. It was difficult to find parking on this street considering there's so many breakfast cafes but we got lucky and stumbled upon this restaurant. Def glad we came in & hope to visit when back in Portland

This is a casual eatery with lots of sweet & savory waffles to choose from. You order at the counter, pick up your food yourself, and bus your own tables. My son had chicken & waffle--both the chicken and waffle were cooked to perfection but the flavor was just a tad bland. I had a sweet waffle with caramel sauce, bananas, ice cream, and whipped cream. It was very good!

A cute dining area! The smell of waffles is immaculate as soon as you walk in. You place your order at the front & they give you a buzzer as soon as your food is ready, then you're good to go! I ordered the Green tea mint lemonade and it was very refreshing! I also ordered the Liege waffles with fresh strawberries and lemon curd and lettt me tell you. It was an explosion of fruity goodness! 7/10. Would definitely come back!

Dungeness Crab Eggs Benedict. Highly recommend! Tons of real crab.

The cheese and crack sundae has toasted marshmallow, chocolate, and cinnamon cracker crumbs. Omg the cinnamon crumbs are so good, that with the ice cream was really yummy (I'm a simple girl what can I say). The chocolate hardened into a chocolate shell and it was kind of only on the bottom of the cup so that was a little disappointing. The toasted marshmallow didn't add much, but maybe I'm biased bc I don't rlly care for toasted marshmallow ‍ Overall, the entire sundae is mainly a ton of vanilla ice cream. It's a big portion that I shared with someone else. Second time I went, I got the banana pudding sundae which was soooo good. I shared this with my friend and it was plenty. They give a good amount of banana pudding and you can tell it's quality. I saw bananas, the bread/wafer part, and it pairs nicely with the ice cream. Prob my favorite thing from this place. My other friend got the pbo which was also good. They layer oreo and peanut butter pudding so you get it all throughout the sundae which is nice. She also got an everything cookie which has literally everything in it. It was texturally interesting and not too sweet! Overall, good flavors and quality ice cream. The portions are a bit big and I wish they had half or even quarter sizes since these came in huge cups. At a certain point, the vanilla ice cream becomes flavorless bc there's so much of it but the sundaes were still pretty good!

For two people we paid $150 with tip, and that was without desserts and coffee. Things of note from a Friday night summer visit to this place that's been there four years now: High-end presentation. The plating is top level and each thing they place in front of you is like a sculpture or work of art. Nice energy, not at all too loud. They have acoustic tiles on the ceiling and on the concrete floor added a runner that echos the curve of the large bar, which helps. Portion size looked nice and generous from examples of things we saw being brought to tables, such as the salad and focaccia. Best appetizers were fried cauliflower and the asparagus dish w/ the eggs (which would be even better if warm). The one fish entree is the sablefish (ours was underseasoned) that's brought out on thin piece of cedar with edges still slightly charred. It comes with nothing else on the plate so plan accordingly. Just inside the door they have a little snack/pantry curated market of sorts, where you can linger while waiting for seating and can buy things like a cute little bottle of honey for $20 or a colorful crocheted wall hanging basket for $70. Lots of good natural light because of the walls of floor to ceiling windows. Option of ample seating indoors and outdoors because it's a corner location. Cautionary note: We saw and heard a lunatic in hoodie who, at 6pm on a Friday night, walked up to one of the unoccupied outdoor tables and flipped it over, causing the plates and glasses to fly in the air and shattered, landing in shards next to the elderly couple at the next table who jumped up, her understandably in shock and tears. Staff did nice job moving them inside to a twotop, cleaning up the mess, and removing all the seating on that side of the building for the night.

The leek salad was beautifully dressed and came with the most perfect gooey eggs. But the star of the show was the beans; incredibly tender and in the most amazing southern-style collard greens sauce. Everything was so fresh and different! The meal was simply spectacular! I truly cannot wait to go back and try everything. Chef Tim is simply a GENIUS who clearly cares deeply about his food. Not to mention how kind and generous he is as a human being. It's been around 7 or 8 years since my last visit but I remember the fried chicken sandwiches coming with two thick, juicy, fried boneless thighs. I found it difficult to eat more than half a sandwich given the size and excess meat. Usually I would end up pulling one thigh out and saving it for later! I decided to visit again on a recent weekend trip to Portland, arriving for an early dinner at around 4:30 PM. It was surprisingly busy, with at least a quarter of the seats taken in the shared seating pool even though it was so early in the day. Luckily there wasn't a line to order and the food came out within 15 minutes. Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) - Just as how I remembered, this sandwich is still huge with two breaded and fried thighs on a bed of lightly dressed, crunchy cole slaw. It's really tall and doesn't compress well due to the abundant crunchy elements throughout. There's the bun that's heavily toasted until extremely, almost aggressively, crisp and almost dark golden brown, absolutely doused in butter a la Texas toast. There are house pickles on the bottom bun, very quickly pickled such that it develops no acidity, but changes to that crunchy yet soggy pickle texture. The two chicken thighs are expertly breaded until full of crags and valleys, seasoned well, and fried until crisp. The crispy quality is of a lighter variety rather than a hard crunch, very delicate as compared to a typical flour based fried chicken dredge. The chicken is different from what I remembered. Instead of being juicy full thighs, almost an inch thick at the meatiest, these patties are thin, sad, like a single thigh butterflied and cut into fourths width-wise. The breading is far thicker than the chicken itself - in fact the chicken almost is an afterthought here, completely getting lost in all the breading and everything else in the sandwich. Seriously, look at some of the photos from other Yelpers taken in 2016 and 2017 and compare to my cross section photo. It's a huge difference. I bet it's a cost cutting measure and it certainly isn't an appreciated change. Maybe it's just a sign of the times - while the 2010s air waves thumped with 'All About That Bass," the thick thighs have now unfortunately been 2020s Ozempic zapped. The major downside of the sandwich is surprisingly the bun. It's by far the most dominant component of the sandwich. It's the crunchiest element and the butter flavor completely overwhelms the taste buds. This is why fried chicken sandwiches are usually served on soft and pillowy buns, or at least buns that are only lightly toasted, so the bread can focus on and cradle the crunch element rather than supersede it. This is the first time that I can recall a sandwich where the bun is the dominant entity. (3/5) Dandan Fries ($10) - These fries are deceptively filling. They're really snackable and give a distinct moreish quality. It's like a snack where I absentmindedly keep reaching in the bag for more and suddenly it's completely empty. The fries combine a somewhat lightly fried potato, a delicate crisp on the outside and an extremely fluffy almost fall-apart tender inside, with a nutty, spicy, and mouth tingly mala sauce. The sauce is thick, rich, filled with fatty goodness. It's actually a really good glue, adhering the crushed peanuts on the fries so well, nothing falls off while lifting the fries out of the bowl. I especially love the mini cornichons mixed into the fries. They add just a bit of sweetness and acidity that balances so well with the fatty dandan inspired sauce. Without them, I think the dish would feel far too rich. With them, the fries go down the gullet at a quick rate. (5/5) I can't help but feel a little disappointed at Basilisk. It's another one of those places that seems to have decided to sacrifice quality in order to keep prices relatively low. While I enjoyed the Dandan Fries, I'm not sure that's enough of a draw to get me to revisit. Bathrooms - Four unisex rooms shared with the other establishments in the building. Their description shall remain vague and they will be nameless. I wasn't feeling like franchise food so I asked him to look around. He steered us to Basilisk. Boy, he picked a good spot. Basilisk shares a communal dining space with a Vietnamese spot, a bar, and a pizza place. It wouldn't be fair to compare Basilisk to Nashville Hot Chicken because the flavors are different and unique in their own right. I probably could have downed the dandan fries and been happy with my meal but I'm an overachiever. We each had the sandwich, shared the dandan fries, and my son had koolaid flavored soft serve. We were seated right away, wherever we wanted. I picked a shady indoor spot booth. I'm not sure, if it's the right booth, I then realized, they have the swings, by the window facing Burnside. I wanted to move, but hubby won't! No matter how much I begged, he ain't movin'. Then, I said: 'the music here is too loud.' His answer? 'There's always something!' So I stayed. I checked out the Patio. It might work, for the group. At least, there's one of us, who love alcohol. That may give them a reason to come. (She's driving the rest of the group). Since we are heading to an event, not far from here, we didn't have much time to take leftovers home, we didn't have a cooler, it's almost 80 degrees out, so we decided to eat something we could share. We picked the BBQ COHO Salmon Sandwich. Seared Coho salmon glazed with Bourbon BBQ sauce topped with baby Aragula and pickled red onions on a Portland French toasted potato bun. There's a $2 discount recess during happy hour (3-5pm). We were there at that time. (Is that the reason WHY the music were soo loud?) It was served with hand-cut fries. Both were just the perfect taste (delicious), and size for both of us. But, for some reason, I was still tempted to have something else. We were enjoying our time here, that by the time we got to our car, we were rushing, and made it two minutes later we would have been late!) Negative: Music is too loud! Restroom could be improved. It was a great place to slow down, enjoy good food, and spend time together. The smoked brisket hash was the standout. It came with tender brisket, eggs, breakfast potatoes, peppers, onions, and vegetables. The flavors worked really well together. It was hearty, flavorful, and had something different in almost every bite. We also tried the burger and fries. They were simple, solid, and satisfying. The fries had a nice crisp, and the burger was a good choice for a classic brunch or lunch option. I also really appreciated the non-alcoholic drink selection. A lot of places treat zero-proof drinks like an afterthought, but here they actually had fun options. The Phony Espresso Negroni was a great non-alcoholic cocktail and made the meal feel special without needing alcohol. Overall, this was a very enjoyable brunch with good food, friendly service, a relaxed patio, and enough variety on the menu that I would happily come back again.

This OG spot is still serving next door to Steven Smith, around the corner from locally-sourced COWBELL cheese, and just downstairs from MUSE Storytelling. On this visit, Kevin was taking chill care of the atrium, delivering BRIGHT, BEEFY, FRESH Hierloom Tomatoes with Burrata & crisp Focaccia breadcrumb that is SO RICH - no saucisson required! HOWEVER... if you decide to dabble, the infamous CHARCUTERIE ART should include the Green Peppercorn Paté - everything beloved about a mild sausage, more tender, seasoned to herbal perfection with split peppercorns & a sprinkle of flake salt - the meat medley is heavenly with a toasted crostini + Triple Cream Brie, cranberry/raisin chutney on top. Please, just go here and try their steelhead bagel sandwich... but please save me some!!!…read more We were visiting Portland and on the way back to the airport looking for a homey feeling spot we could indulge in, and we found that here! Such a cool little spot, we went for brunch and fully enjoyed every single bite. The place is so cool with art you can purchase all over, a cool little bar, and who I believe is the owner- chillin and taking care of business, very friendly! I literally think of this sandwich weekly, I tell everyone about it- I mean it was seriously life changing. The chilaquiles are also phenomenal, with really delicious coffee. Ugh. Dreaming of the day I go back.

I totally get that they are doing the best they can with limited kitchen abilities, but today was really disappointing. Nothing on my plate was warm except for the poached eggs. Potatoes were extremely greasy and borderline cold. The biscuit did not taste fresh and they only provided enough butter and jam for about a quarter of it. It didn't matter anyways, it wasn't worth eating. Everything was extremely salty. Service was very slow. We waited in front of our plates for at least 20 minutes for the check. The restaurant was nearly empty at this point. I am sad that I cannot provide a better review. I will not be back until their kitchen is back to full speed.
