I had a very delicious breakfast with my love dove here she recommended the chicken and waffles. They were so good and complimented each other so well. The gravy on the side was a nice touch too added flavor to the already crispy and light fried chicken. The waffles were good I wish I knew the recipe for the batter. Food was chill but the drinks were a little steep. Cup of coffee for two and a glass of OJ was nearly 13 dollars. Not exactly a dennys environment and it was a quality restaurant but maybe knock a quarter or two off the drinks you will for sure tip for the food though. I wanted so badly to eat every bite but knew I wouldn't be able to walk out! Will definitely be back for waffles...but (reasons for only marking 4 stars) only on a weekday and the prices are really kind of silly ridiculous and I don't normally ever write about the prices on menus but charging $5.75 for 2 eggs is super lame and crazy expensive. When Jam on Hawthorne had an atrociously long wait, my friend and I made a reservation via Open Table for The Bread & Ink Cafe. Arriving within 5 min of our reservation, the hostess still told us that we've got a 15min wait behind walk-in folks. Perplexed, I asked why we're still waiting with a reservation, and no plausible reason was given. For such a busy Labor Day morning, the wait staff didn't appear bustling to clear tables and seat people. Once seated, our waiter Will B. was so polite and friendly - making amends for his co-workers lackluster ways. We both ordered the Skillet Scramble - and loved it. The sausage had a little spicy kick to it and the roasted potatoes were well seasoned before scrambled into the skillet. My friend also had the homemade Cinnamon Roll, which was deliciously flakey - not doughy or over-baked. Will did enthusiastically recommended the biscuit, and it didn't disappoint. Scratch biscuit perfectly baked and accompanied with homemade strawberry preserves. The preserves were freshly made and discernibly tastier than jarred versions. Have to agree with prior reviewers' dismay over the $3.25 change for coffee BUT we had our own carafe to refill as often as we liked. That more than compensates for the higher price of coffee. Perhaps the restaurant knew that not all waitstaff would promptly refill our coffee cup, so it gives patrons through own carafe? Bravo!!! The food was a five star brunch experience. The homemade salsa was the bomb. That is a very good thing. The freshness of the ingredients and fulfilling creations and portions makes this a hot spot. If you are on the run, they even have a walk up to go window on the sidewalk. Our server was spot on. Good thing we weren't in a rush and decided to stroll around the neighborhood for a little bit before returning right on time for our table. I went with the ABC scramble, which came with bacon, avocado and some other goodies that I can't remember. Moderately dissapointed in value for price, and cleanliness. Visited on a Wednesday afternoon, and ordered the Jala Burger with a side of white bean soup, and the Lox Plate. I'll address the pros before I get to the cons. Service was prompt to greet and seat, menu had solid variety, and the drinks on offer were compelling flavors, but I opted to pass on booze as I'm recovering from a minor cold. Atmosphere was cozy, and bohemian - if a little run down. I ordered the Jala Burger cooked medium. It arrived to the table gray from top to bottom, thought it might have been a trick of the overcast daylight through the window, but turned the burger from the light, and shielded it with my hand for a better look. Definitely well done. Put a knife to the bun to split the burger, and realized instantly that I was dealing with old bread. However, I should remark that both the produce and Salsa seemed extremely fresh, and both were tasty. The concept of the flavors was excellent, but the tough bun, and overcooked meat, compromised the experience. I would have reordered if we had the time to waste. The Lox Plate had a wonderfully generous portion of fish, and again the produce was at peak freshness. On the second half of the bagel, my guest spotted a hair in the cream cheese. At this point I was eager to leave, and asked for the check. It was presented to me with greasy fingerprints, and mayonnaise smeared on the copy I was meant to sign. A clear indicator that our server wasn't maintaining clean hands. You work with food, public health should be your priority. Wash your hands frequently. When it comes time for me to decide how much to tip, I shouldn't be musing about how long you've had mayonnaise under your fingernails, or trying to read the total due through a greasy smear. In conclusion, there are some wonderful food concepts under your roof, but you should work on refining the details that separate a quality establishment from a dilapidated Sharis full of filthy-handed amateurs who can't be bothered to wash. I will consider visiting again after the next food and safety score is published, as I'm worried these conditions might be symptoms of a systematic issue with management vs. health and cleanliness standards in your corporate atmosphere. read more

Went back last weekend and the Como is the name of the white bread which is wonderful but pay an extra $1 and get the cinnamon roll! It is so worth it! I would even go so far as to say it was one of the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had. Not too gooey and not too dry. If you love Cinnabon then you may not like it. It is not overly sweet just the right middle ground. I want another right now after typing this.... But Bread & Ink is a cute little place and the bagels they serve are amazing, especially with that fresh Oregon strawberry jam. My 2 square waffles came with a few beautiful dollops of whipped cream, powdered sugar, a jar of syrup, and a plethora of fresh sweet and delicious strawberries. My friends mostly got omelettes, and they looked good. I tried a potato from one of theirs and it was a little overcooked, so I think the brunch potato sides at Night Light are better, but overall, it seemed like my friends really enjoyed their food. Went to their waffle window and got their Brie, tomato and basil waffle. It was pretty sub par and expensive for one slice of Brie on top. My friend got their egg/bacon waffle combo which looked great and had a better portion. I don't understand how yelp works in this town. There are so many restaurants with four star ratings that totally fail on multiple levels and then there is this place which is consistently wonderful, which somehow has less than four stars in yelp-land. Maybe because of people like me who visit all the time and don't bother to write a positive review until two and a half years after my first visit? Typically I come here for breakfast and get the ABC scramble with polenta and a cinnamon roll (weekends only, I believe). It's so good. They make my absolute favorite cinnamon roll --heavenly to me! Love the setting, love the food..but every time I go in my waitress always give me gives me an attitude and its always the same person...I feel so full at the end of the visit, but left upset because of how we were treated. The waitress would snicker at us when when we had further questions about the menu. He would always give us an annoyed look when we ask for more water. I was expecting people to gush over Bread and Ink Cafe and found that my assessment is only half a star below the average of 3.5 stars. Bread and Ink was the first place on Hawthorne at which I've ever eaten. This was in the 90s. I remember that the food was, at the very least, decent and that the service and prices were acceptable. So, I needed to eat breakfast, which they serve until late on Sundays, and also wanted to try a Blue Star donut. I felt that one could consolidate this journey. This means one has to go to Hawthorne ... not "has to" in a "must see" sense, but in the sense that one has to go there if they want to eat at Bread and Ink as well as at Blue Star Donuts. Bread and Ink's food consumed that day consisted of an omelette platter and a cup of hot tea. The omelette, which had mushrooms inside and was topped with sour cream, would have been a 4. The roasted potatoes had no seasonings to differentiate them from those at other places, so those would have been a 3. The bread and the homemade strawberry preserves, which are a bright, shiny red, were outstanding, so those would be a 5. The hot tea would fetch a 2. This may seem like splitting hairs, but one envelope with a bag of Earl Grey tea cost $3.25 here. This is not the Heathman. I'm sure the tea bag didn't cost them more than 10 cents. And, yes, I understand the concept of having to add in labor, overhead, and profit for each line item on the menu. Overall, pricing seemed about 5 to 10 percent over what it should have been. Still, I found three dollars and twenty-five freaking cents for that bag of Earl Grey tea odd. The service would have amounted to a 3. The person performing the hosting function did a better job than did the server, who exhibited a perfunctory brand of friendliness. The physical plant is prototypical Hawthorne frump and funk, so that also gets a 3, both for some quirky and interesting things to look at inside and the feeling of "oh no, not again" from having seen this "get up" in similar establishments from sea to shining sea. So, in summation, Bread and Ink is basically "one big 3." read more
