Don't get the raves about this place. It's a little dingy on the inside and I've never experienced such upselling from waitstaff before. The last time I was there, our server was really milking it. I had heard from a couple of writers on Quora about this place for breakfast so I had breakfast and ordered the huevos rancheros and husband ordered the eggs with biscuit and gravy. The coffee was really really good. I loved the amount of food we had on our plates. It was a perfect serving - not too much food which isn't the norm anymore. We have been regulars at the waffle window (which we love) and did not realize until today that what was a lovely sit down restaurant now charges sit down prices for counter service (you pick up food, pour own coffee, take care of refills, and bus). Wow! So disappointed in Bread and Ink. I used to rely on this place as a go-to for good food, great service and nice atmosphere. A place to take out of town guests or celebrate a family birthday and know that anyone would be able to find something they liked and leave feeling good. That is NOT the vibe anymore. I should've known before walking in: there's garbage all around their outside table area, the menu board is tagged and has old, ripped paper displayed, and the entry just looks tired and sad. Inside, you have to order at the counter. The prices are still the same ($22 for crab cake Benedict that was mediocre at best- the poached eggs were barely cooked with the whites still very runny) but you now have to run your own order and bus your table. Which meant that the tables were also dirty as there didn't seem to be anyone cleaning them between guests. The biscuits and gravy were blah. It's serve your-own-coffee and when I asked for decaf I was told there wasn't any. I asked if the coffee pot that said "decaf" was empty and was told that if it was out then they have decaf. The person taking the orders at the counter said they never knew when the back decided to make decaf or not. They did have decaf so that was a positive. Our son ordered a waffle from the waffle window (same counter and ticket as B&I), which he reported as just as good as pre pandemic. He asked if they had lemonade and was told yes, then was offered either blackberry basil or green tea lemonade. He asked for plain and was told that wasn't an option. He asked for apple juice and again that wasn't an option. He decided on water and had to get it himself, of course. I hate writing bad reviews but I really wanted people familiar with Bread and Ink to understand that this is not the place it was a few years ago. Not even close. If anyone knows what happened- new owners? New management? -please let me know. There are plenty of great breakfast spots in this town. Skip this one. read more

Bread and Ink is still one of my all-time favorite brunch places in Portland. It is classically Portland. The service is always warm and friendly and attentive, the food is delicious, bountiful, and creative, with very reasonable prices. Come on a weekday, and you'll have your choice of seats. Come on a weekend, and you might have to wait, but it'll be worth the wait! Recently, I had their mushroom and spinach omelette which was divine, beautifully prepared, and hearty! Two types of cheese, many sautéed mushrooms: so good! It's served with delicious crispy hash browns (or home fries), and homemade bread -- which came warm out of the oven with sides of butter and homemade strawberry jam! It felt so homey and tasted amazing! My partner had the grilled, curried chicken with homemade chutney, which she said was delicious! The Belgian pearl sugar waffles are amazing; someone else wrote on Yelp about asking for the Waffle Window menu, and I'll be sure to do that in the future; thanks! All in all, Bread and Ink is one of my favorite places: great, creative comfort food and attentive service in the heart of SE Portland. read more

We've been to Bread & Ink several times before. Usually, if we aren't very hungry it's easy to get lured to the side of the building for a Waffle from the Waffle Window. But today, we wanted something more substantial & the food was . We started with the Charcuterie board. It was a delicious delight of flavors. The pickled red onion was so amazing, the fruit was the freshest and we loved pairing the the different meats, cheeses and spreads together with the crostini. Not long after our entree's arrived... WOW, just WOW! The buttermilk friend Chicken & Liege Waffle with Parmesan lemon cream sauce & maple syrup were delicious! We couldn't stop eating. It was so good. Perfectly fried, juicy chicken! Yeasty, chewy, Waffle was a perfect bite. I cannot say enough good about our experience today, our server was polite and efficient & checked on us regularly. Great meal! read more

WILD experience trying to eat here. They have absolutely no system for seating people in order of when they come in. We waited in line for 10 minutes only to get to the front to order and have the rude cashier tell us they didn't have any space for us so we would have to order to go. Then she said "oh it looks like there is a table getting up" and then people in line 5 or 6 people behind us took the table and she was like "sorry, there's nothing I can do, it's first come, first serve" even though we were there first. She offered no helpful or courteous options and when I asked why if it was first come, first serve we weren't served first? She just shrugged her shoulders. As we were leaving another table was getting up but we were too irritated by the entire experience to take the table, then get BACK in a now even bigger line to wait to order food. Horrible customer service. They really need to figure this dining style out if they want repeat customers. Truly so disappointing. read more

Oh my GOD, if you want an AMAZING breakfast and you like brisket, the brisket hash is what you should get. This dish was fantastic! It is not leaning spicy at all. It's more of a dish that savory meets sweet and hardy. It's a good heavy meal that is worth the heartburn if you're as sensitive as I am lol. I ordered a side of hollandaise as well. Perhaps I just didn't order the right items....but didn't think their menu was anything super special, nor is it vast. Just seemed typical to me. Although I didn't order any specialty items I will say that I give them props to making a lot of stuff themselves. My order: 2 eggs w/homemade pork sausage, roasted potatoes, and a piece of baguette. All in all my breakfast was hearty and more than I could eat. Their pork sausage patties they make themselves was pretty good. Potatoes were passable. Eggs....are eggs. The baguette with their fresh strawberry jam was tasty....and an entire pot of coffee for me to drink was awesome. I tend to drink a lot of coffee. It was a good meal. Not great. Their homemade ketchup....was...well....interesting. It was more like a compote and a tad too sweet. I honestly wished I just had a bottle of Heinz. Ever wonder why there is a long wait on weekends at Cup & Saucer, which is just a half block down Hawthorne from Bread & Ink, but you can get seated right away in Bread & Ink? There's a couple possible reasons. One is for some menu items Bread & Ink is just plain stingy. Over $4 for two paltry strips of bacon? Came here for dinner and didn't see it on the menu at first, then the waitress said there was one item available that wasn't on the menu - chicken and waffles!! The chicken was fried perfectly, with spot on juicy tenderness in the meat and fresh buttermilk crispiness in the outer coating. The waffles also tasted fresh and were perfect. The tiny skillet with the gravy and the mini pitcher with syrup were adorable. Only complaint is the $14.50 price for two pieces of chicken and two waffles, hence the 4 stars. The Wife had eggs, bacon, potaties and bread with jam. Endless coffee refills. $30 for two. Not too shabby. This restaurant was a vegetarian haven. The black bean burger was probably the best one I've ever had. The sandwich was as big as my face. Add avocado, and there's nothing better. It comes with a heaping pile of fries. Ask for house-made mustard and catsup on the side. You'll probably need them replenished. This was the perfect victory meal after a long day of hiking in Portland's surrounding mountains. If I had known this meal was waiting for me at the end of the trail, there would have definitely been more pep in my step. read more

We were swept away by the excellent feel good customer service. The staff was super friendly and easy to talk to. They all seemed to be in a chipper mood. The menu is full of all kinds of things.... breakfast, brunch, burgers,fried chicken salads... the food and cocktails that the waiters carried to waiting tables looked fabulous.I could have tried everything on the menu. We ended up ordering a peach mimosa (delicious!), black bean burger with homemade fries and chipolte mayo dipping sauce along with a local beer, pulled pork sandwich with homemade fries and creamy coleslaw. Of all the places I ate at in Portland during my trip this was my least favorite. I suppose we came at the wrong time, since many of the reviews are for breakfast and we came for dinner. Everyone else in my group seemed to enjoy their entree, but I ordered the Grilled Curried Chicken and was not impressed at all. It was incredibly dry but thankfully they gave a dipping sauce to help moisten the meat. The drink I ordered (a sparkling raspberry martini) was unfortunately a miss as well. Disappointing. I decided to go out of my comfort zone and try the smoked pork loin. When it arrived, it resembled Canadian bacon, which is not my thing. But the disappointing part was that it was cold--colder than room temperature. Even my companions (lovers of all forms of ham and bacon) didn't want it. My roasted potatoes were mostly undercooked--half of them were rather crunchy-raw. Service was harried. It was busy, but there weren't many people waiting since we arrived early. But still our server was rushed and seemed bothered. She asked one person if they wanted coffee and assumed we all did. We had to point out that we might want something else. She forgot to ask us what sides/bread we wanted and didn't bring any toast. I received the wrong order, but they were glad to correct it for me. And when we pointed out the missing toast she brought it for us. But by then my eggs were cold. Bread and Ink is one of the restaurants my husband took me to when we started dating, to try and 1) impress me and 2) entice me to move to Portland. It worked. I still like the place. The service is usually very good, the food is usually very good, and I like the quiet intimate atmosphere. I think it's sweet. I really like their yummy breakfast fare, waffles are AWEsome. At dinner I usually have pasta or fish. It's almost always very very good. I don't like them charging a split plate fee, that bugs me ( sometimes we like to get appetizers, share a pasta course and then have dessert), but I get overmyself and deal. I had a very delicious breakfast with my love dove here she recommended the chicken and waffles. They were so good and complimented each other so well. The gravy on the side was a nice touch too added flavor to the already crispy and light fried chicken. The waffles were good I wish I knew the recipe for the batter. Food was chill but the drinks were a little steep. Cup of coffee for two and a glass of OJ was nearly 13 dollars. Not exactly a dennys environment and it was a quality restaurant but maybe knock a quarter or two off the drinks you will for sure tip for the food though. My friends and I were in a rush to go to the airport so we wanted to grab a quick bite at a local restaurant after picking up some Blue Star Donuts. We were not disappointed! I thoroughly enjoyed my Lox Benedict breakfast. Lox is always a go-to favorite and the eggs benedict always pairs nicely with it. My friend ordered the Max's Mix-Up Breakfast Skillet and although there's a lot of things that come with it, the portion size was perfect. It's literally everything you always wanted for breakfast, but without the eggs! I would say ask for the avocado salsa on the side, along with the fruit salsa. Bread and Ink reminds me of a NYC deli cafe, with lots of bustliness, quirky line art on the walls, good breads, and Yiddish menu items. I love the homemade ketchup for the herbed potatoes, chicken fennel sausage and baguettes, and the coffee is fantastic. They also serve morning cocktails, such as mimosas and bloody marys. Known for their chicken and waffles, but I ordered one of their specials - crab & asparagus omelet. I love crab and this omelet had chunks of fresh, sweet crab in it. The asparagus was crunchy too and not overcooked. It came with hashbrowns as well but I focused on the omelet :). My boyfriend got the chicken & waffles - chicken was ok, but I thought the waffles were soft/crunch and sweet - sugary sweet. Note, I love sweet stuff. We wanted to eat a the Waffle Window at first but it was cold and wet that day so we decided to try this place instead since it had indoor seating.
