I'm visiting from Chicago and fell in love with Bread + Bar! I was given the choice between pizza or "this place with French onion soup and bread purses" so obviously I chose the Bread Purses! It's one of the most creative dishes I've ever seen/tasted. Seeing as though this restaurant has "bread" in the name, the bread they serve to nosh on is delightful, especially paired with the olive oil/parmigiana cheese to dip in! The bread will be used throughout the entire meal to soak up pasta sauce or that French onion soup, so definitely know that going in! I always love hearing what the server recommends and she raved about the crab cakes(on special). They did not disappoint! The Brussel sprouts were my most favorite, followed closely by our main entree (we ordered a smattering of things to share): the cacio de Pepe. I was told the chef adds a bit of Gruyère to his cacio dish to elevate the creaminess - absolutely divine! The thinly sliced fried zucchini on top was a great way to cut the richness. Robby was the best server! He gave us great suggestions and was patient with our requests. The hostess found us an outdoor table, but beware there are mosquitos since you are by the lake, so either bring bug spray or sit inside. Food was 10/10 - we didn't know what to expect, but all of our food was delicious. All the desserts are also fantastic, including the cookie, strawberry lemon cake, and the cheesecake. read more

Oh if I could give 10 stars I would. I was on vacation and found Bread +Bar. Everything I had was amazing. Beautiful simple salad with a light dressing, the chefs special was scallops over corn polenta with blistered tomatoes. I could have licked the plate. For desert I had a light champagne cake. The view of the bay was beautiful and I can't say enough about how friendly everyone was. I wish I lived close. I would be a regular. read more

Our whole table was disappointed with the food. Nice service. Ambiance is fine. It's just the food is so mid. My eggplant parm and French purses literally tasted like something bought frozen from the supermarket and microwaved. Dunno how you make a mediocre onion soup but they nailed it. Everyone felt their salads had twice the dressing needed and their root veggies were too undercooked. The fish filets were cooked well and the tomato tart was great but that was it. It makes me sad to leave this review but I'm hoping to save others disappointment or hopefully motivate the kitchen staff to be improve. read more

Best meal in Michigan!!!!!! The food and drinks here are amazing. I had the swordfish and my husband had the filet special. Both dishes were wonderful. The meatballs for an appetizer were just like my Italian grandmother's (aka Nana)!!!!! It is worth every penny. I would recommend this to anyone that knows what good food really is!!! One of our favorite places! It is a great place to meet with my brother Pat. We prefer sitting at the bar while Ian mixes up our drinks. Food is excellent and the place has an overall cool vibe. The 1st time we came we met the owner, Tim. What a great guy--insisted that my G&T could be improved -- he tossed the 1st one out and mixed a tall tumbler with his reserve gin...then off he went to mingle with other diners. Last week while back at the bar we again asked if Tim was there--Ian shared the sad news that Tim had passed away in April. Only met him once but still hit us. Fortunately, Tim's son Matt had come back from Chicago to take over operations 2 years back so the quality of food and service remains top notch. Excited for a nice day and wanted to dine outside. Absolutely wonderful outdoor space and dinner! Salads were fresh and on point - both the house and Cesar. Tried the Rockfish. Ironically it smelled fishy but tasted delightful. No fishy taste - new for me! The sides were just okay but the fish was a star! Husband loved the Hangar Steak, always a good choice! I felt like I was at my grandmas in 1960's South Carolina! Truly impeccable. After the drinks, we grabbed some French onion purses and the coconut shrimp. The purses were...well PURfect!! Melt in your mouth delicious. The shrimp was delicious as well. For dinner, my wife got the Fish Fry. She said the only fish she's ever had that was better was in Alaska! Fresh as could be! I ordered the skirt steak and it was exquisite. The Sherry vinegar and the coffee rub combined for an authentic and rustic taste. Friendly staff, comfortable place. Decided to try Bread Bar with my best friend and husband tonight. We ordered the meat and cheese plate, both my best friend and I got the chicken soup and my husband just got a drink. The food was fine but definitely super overpriced for what you get. I really wanted to try it but man was it expensive. The service was overwhelming poor. Seriously, I get better service at McDonald's. Not only did we have like 3 different people delivering the different things but our actual server was barely around. Waiting 10 minutes for more water, 5 more minutes for extra bread and the second time we needed water it was not delivered by our waitress so we just asked for our check. While I'm glad I tried it, my husband, my best friend and myself all agreed never again. Once and done I suppose. At least the bathrooms were clean. read more

Ventured over to Benton Harbor for some morning kayaking and got a little hungry, so Bread + Bar is it. When I arrived I was pleased with the view and the interior design. Wow, quite upscale and chic, not what I expected, given the neighboring establishments. I sat out on the back patio and enjoyed the breeze. The place was empty, only two other parties were seated outside. My server, Sandy, was kind of nice, but seemed like she was in a bit of a hurry. Maybe it was me....see I take my time when I dine, especially if I'm alone and Yelping lol. Sorry Sandy, thanks for your patience. Here's what I ordered: French onion soup- the French onion soup was perfectly executed ! Toasty cheese, but not overwhelming and just the right amount of broth. The onions were present and the delicious soaked bread at the end was nice. The flavor of the soup was light, not what I usually expect from French onion soup. It was nice! 1/2 Turkey + 7 grain- Nothing out of this world. The turkey was dry. The roasted red pepper & bacon spread was rich and packed with flavor. The bread was not toasted, that would have been my preference. Maybe doing so would have melted the spread a bit and created some moisture. This needed some Dijon mustard, or mayo, or aioli...something to help with the dry turkey. Berry cobbler- Very good! The berries were tart and plentiful. The filling is the star of this dish! The topping was tasty, though I would have liked a slightly thicker layer of the crumble (that's just my preference). It was topped with vanilla bean ice cream, yessss! This dessert is definitely shareable. Would I return? Yes, it's a nice ambience! I'd like to check out their dinner menu and sample some other cocktails/wines. SYOY read more

This was my fourth time dining here. I love the restaurant's decor and feel. all of my other dining experiences were very good. I was so disappointed this visit. I had been talking it up to everyone I take there. This visit, the chicken rice soup was just okay. It was disappointing. My Caesar salad was very good. The French Onion soup was also okay, not remarkable. My meatballs were very good but the marinara sauce was very greasy. It had never been greasy. Onion purses were good. The Chicken-Scarapariello with sausage was just awful. It was a chicken thigh, deboned but skin on. Overcooked and so small. One piece of sausage sliced and 4 pieces of planked potatoes. This was sitting in a greasy mess. She ate the sausage and that was it. That was 24.00. I must say, if this had been my first visit, I would not go back. What happened? Our server actually asked if we wanted to take the remains home? NO. read more
