This has been one of my favorite restaurants in the area for several years now. But the last couple of times have been disappointing. Skirt steak is a staple fave of mine and last few times I've ordered it has been served luke warm at best. Tonight we learned the exceptional unique blood orange martini they had has been taken off the menu and no longer offered. And Dinner for the 6 of us took 45 mins to be served. Such a bummer. Service continues to be reliable which is always a plus. French onion purses are still amazing. Hoping these were just a few isolated incidents and our next experience will be more in line with what we've become accustomed to. read more

This is one of our absolute favorite new spots for a date night or to entertain company. We immediately noticed how incredible the bread was as soon as we sat down. Come to find out, the restaurant is a concept by local bakery which explains why the baked goods and desserts are so spectacular! The tartines are incredible and underpriced in my opinion. Must-have! The food here is decent, nothing special. The dining area is very open and noisy (depending on when you are there).

Atmosphere was very relaxing and dim lit. Had a very comfortable vibe there and warm light. We were seated immediately on a packed Friday night without reservation. Food was amazing - has the short rib and whitefish. Wish the portions were a little bigger, but you still feel full! Heavy pours on the beers too for the price! Will be back! read more

Having a late lunch and these Tartines are so yummy!! This is a cool little spot. Would definitely eat here again. The atmosphere is very chill and relaxed. We were greeted with a friendly smile and conversation when we entered. Service was a little slow, seeing as how there were only a couple of people here, but the food was definitely worth the wait! Only disappointment was I ordered the tartine with whitefish, cream cheese and fennel, and instead of fennel it had a spring mix of lettuce. Was still good, just not what I was expecting. Waited over an hour for a table of 10 even though we had a reservation at 7pm that was made weeks in advance. The waiter never asked if we wanted a second round of drinks. For the trouble they gave us free dessert, but we could tell it was the messed up slices they hadn't served throughout the night and would've thrown away anyway. I got the pork osso bucco and it was terrible, would not recommend. read more

This was a delightful experience! We had dinner here with my mom and our oldest son for Christmas. The boy had the wild boar entree - which he said was good - but he reported a 4 star. Hubs seemed to love his mussels enough that he kept trying to get the rest of us to eat them as well. My mom enjoyed her salmon enough that she was silent the whole time! My food was pretty good - my only complaint might h e been that they were out of some key ingredient to, so I had to have an option I did t want with my entree. If you're looking for a fun, unique and enjoyable dining experience while in the Benton Harbor, Michigan area, Bread + Bar is a wonderful choice. Fourteen of us gathered there for a family dinner as part of a reunion. From beginning to end, everything just "clicked". Our server, and those who assisted her, were outstanding being incredibly responsive to everyone in a large party. In essence if someone requested something, it was promptly delivered. Equal to their stellar service, their food was outstanding. The coconut shrimp is not to be missed! A few times during our meal, Tim Foley, the owner/Chef, stopped by to make sure all was well and enjoyable. It was obvious Tim and his wife are very dedicated to providing a great experience. First time here and the tartines are amazing!!! Roasted tomato & caponata were savory, fresh, tangy, and very tasty - these two are my favorites! The smoke whit fish over the field greens was nice and light. I was expecting a heavier taste but this was better with the cream cheese. The place doesnt have the best view compared to the other riverside or lakefront restaurants in the area. Nevertheless, they got quite food and service. Their Sriracaha Chicken with cold Soba Noodles was probably the best dish we had in StJo. Though my halibut dinner was a bit underseasoned, being owned by the same people as A Bit of Swiss, the free fresh bread and butter makes up for it. I could definitely see ourselves coming back to this place on our next visit. read more

This has been on our list to try for awhile and we finally had the chance to stop in for a drink and snacks on a Saturday afternoon. We arrived around 4:30 and we're cheerfully greeted by the hostess. The place was pretty empty so we had our choice of seating. We opted for the patio. Inside and out, the place is welcoming and cozy. Happy hour runs from 3-5 with a $1 off drinks and a limited food menu. They have a nice selection of local beers on draft and I've heard the cocktails are great, but didn't see a drink menu. I ordered a glass of chardonnay (Edna Valley for $8) and my husband opted for a beer. The complimentary bread basket included sliced pretzel sticks and a wheat sourdough. The place done by Bit of Swiss so you know the bread is good! The tartines made for the perfect snack. You select three for $9.50. Each tartine is three pieces on perfectly grilled como bread. We selected the smoked whitefish, serrano ham with manchego and the cannellini bean. Service was great and the place started filling up around 5:00. The dinner entrees and specials sounded great and they have a nice lunch menu as well. We will definitely be back! read more

I LOVE this place, in both summer and winter. They really transform their menu with the seasons, keeping it light and fresh in the summer and warm and cozy meals in the winter, all while keeping their staples on the menu. They're open for lunch as well with a menu just as extensive as dinner. It's become my favorite place to bring my customers! Now onto the food: Amazing specials every night. Some of my favorite MUST try's Nana's Meatballs(best meatballs I've ever had) and French Onion purses (French onion soup in a bite size wonton.....absolute genius idea). The lamb chops with pomegranate glaze and the skirt steak are also at the top of my list. Lastly, DO NOT SKIP OUT ON THE CARBS or SWEETS. The owners of bread+bar are the same owners and Bit of Swiss. Nice upscale restaurant. It is noisy because it is basically one large room without any walls or dividers. There is patio seating weather permitting. The menu is not very large and if you want a steak you won't find it here. All in all it's a good alternative to the downtown hustle and bustle. read more

Stopped in for lunch before heading back to St. Joseph for the evening. The Bread + Bar is a pretty hip, trendy place with cool modern décor and large, breezy dining room. Went light on the food since it was lunch, so I chose the tomato soup and a half sandwich. The soup was pretty plain - not bad, but compared to the rich and decadent version I had at 221 Main the night before, the Bread + Bar one paled in comparison. The turkey sandwich was also no frills, but it satisfied me just fine. Hubby went with the roast beef on a pretzel bun. He said the roast beef was good quality and the pretzel bun was very good. Overall, it was just fine for lunch. Nothing fancy or different, but for a quick meal in a sit-down restaurant, Bread + Bar was perfect. We'd go back for dinner if we were locals, for sure. read more

I used to really like this place. Ladt visit 2 years ago, when service was terrible. Manager or owner was sitting in a booth with customers, instead of helping to get food out of the kitchen. Walked up and apologized for the bad service, but with a crappy, "oh well, it happens" atitude. Gave them another chance last night. Still poor service. Simple chicken rice soup only so so. No salt or pepper on table, or offered for my salad. Can't get water or glasses, no offer for dessert. Will not ever return. read more

Roasted eggplant and lentils $16, smaller dish. Bread (free) is excellent, this is a bakery-spun joint. Excellent dessert-we got a Creme brûlée and it was spot on! The food was excellent-bursting with flavor! The French onion purses were unique and delicious, the golden tile fish was moist and flavorful sitting on a bed of thyme grains. Generous portions. The staff was amazing! We had at least 5 different staff attend to us for varying needs-ALL smiling, personable, attentive;a rare find these days. Mr Foley (the owner) stops by to insure customers are satisfied. Even the staff cooking are visible through large windows from the parking lot are smiling and waving!! The only reason I did not rate 5 star is that it is very loud. High industrial like ceilings though trendy lend to challenging acoustics when the restaurant is full-Difficult to have a conversation while dining. I found this place through Yelp reviews and was so glad we did, cute little patio that we sat out on with a view of the harbor. We had a really nice waitress (Brynn I believe) who was so welcoming. Atmosphere was great as well, we got the chicken and waffles for my daughter (I mat have eaten half) and they were delicious.I had a prickly pear margarita (yum) and my husband and I share the coconut shrimp and tuna to start, shrimp was delicious, I would prob pass on the tuna next time. Then we shared the eggplant Parmesan special, also so good and the bread was a wonderful addition to it all. What a cute spot, we will definitely be back! read more
