Snuck by here during my lunch break - found some street parking. Their POS system was down at the time - so everyone had to order their food from their phones. Either way - my order came out fast. You know, I really should give Breakaway 5 stars. But I just can't. It's still a little early and I always feel it's good to leave a little room for improvement. But after two visits for lunch I have to say everything we've had has been perfect. Literally perfect. The service too. I had the Chicken Pesto sandwich the first time. Perfect. The other day I had the burger and half of my wife's Jambon-Beurre sandwich (we switched half-way). Both were perfect. Oh and the corn chowder. You guessed it, perfect again. Even the salads. So I have to say Breakaway Cafe is really off to a flying start. We've spoken to the owner (very hands-on) on both our visits. Seems like a fine fellow, very knowledgeable and hard working. I have every confidence that he will figure out a way to get that 5th star out of me in no time. I have no doubt. But what will it be? The bread they use is perfect. The pastries are maybe not quite perfect but close enough. Except the chocolate chip cookie, it's perfect. There was a glob of super processed peanut butter on top and same style of granola. Very runny and was put in a paper to-go container that was soon leaking. Avocado Tartine - Maybe you need to specify that the toast is ideally toasted and warm? It was limp. Long story short, left it behind. Major shoutout to the guys at breakaway cafe for accommodating our productions breakfast this week. They went above and beyond to make sure everything arrived when we needed it. Zach and his brother are wonderful to work with and to top of wonderful people running the business the food is incredible!! We ordered burritos combos for the entire crew and they were such a hit. The bacon one is my recommendation. And the parfaits, fruit salads, and chia seed puddings were perfectly proportioned and delicious. Average food, rude and nonexistent "service" permeate this pretentious place. This is one of those order at the counter and find your own table type of places. That's ok. You also have to get your own forks and knives from the counter because they won't bring those out to you; nor do they get you your drinks. That's also on you. They still expect you to tip though when you place your order. That's ok too you tell yourself since you're expecting them to bring out the food and then clear your table. But what you get instead is a scattered, hipstery "worker" who obnoxiously scolds you for waiting behind the customer in front of you while ordering. Apparently, you're supposed to stand along the counter. Then she takes your order. You pay, and you tip. You then find yourself a table while she brings out your food and takes it to the wrong table because she wrote down the wrong number. So you wait for her to figure it out. Considering it's a very small place with a small number of customers, she shouldn't be so confused. Then you finally get your food. It's just OK. Nothing great; nothing terrible. But then you try to leave and she tells you to bus your own table and carry your own plates to some tray they have sitting out on the counter. What's she doing besides giving you orders? NOTHiNG! She's not even the only employee there. She's just the one we got stuck with. I haven't been to a McDonald's in ages, but I recall getting much better service, and they didn't even expect a tip. I would never return to a place of business where employees don't treat customers with respect. So, I definitely won't be returning here. read more

This is the new ownership for the old "LA cooking school cafe" and color me impressed! First, I love that we can pickup our breakfast or lunch and walk in with our Aussie and he's greeted and welcomed. Next, the staff is quite lovely and engaging, gotta love that and hard to find lately for sure. Most important - the food! They have a truly yummy breakfast burrito, awesome homemade jam and butter with a baguette, nice pastries, good matcha latte and nice fresh salad for lunch. That's all we've tried so far, but it's been consistent for sure. This is right on Washington across from Pasta sisters and their is a free lot right next door if you are driving there. Stopped here after a hike at the Stoneview Nature Center. What a cute find! The food was AMAZING. Super fresh ingredients and delightful pairings. My friends and I shared bites of everything we each ordered as we were blown away. Really great new cafe for breakfast & lunch. The staff is very friendly, it's a laid back atmosphere and feels like a small town cafe - perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of downtown Culver.
