What We Ordered: -Rainbow Kiddie $5.50 -Sunset Beach Regular $6.75 My son wanted the Rainbow Shave Ice. I got him the Kiddie size, which was more than enough for a 5 yo. They offered to put condensed milk on top, which I said okay, but only a little because I didn't want it to be too sweet for him. After speaking with the staff, I was recomended the Sunset Beach and I got it in the regular size which was a good size for me. It was very delicious! It was good pick! I shared a bit with the wife as she doesn't normally like cold and sweet things, but she liked what she tried. The only problem is how fast the ice melts and it quickly turned to soup. It wasn't even that hot outside. I will have to circle back in the winter time when it's cooler outside and see how it is. We were told to wait a bit and let the syrup sink to the bottom before eating. We didn't wait too long and it tasted just fine. We waited maybe 1 minute or so. Small store with cute decor, I missed it the first time I passed by. Parking is kinda difficult since it is sawtelle and super busy. But there are lots and street parking. Brian's shave ice needs to get WAAAAY MORE recognition. Pulling up to this spot, we saw a line but it was actually for a spot next door and tbh, this place should've had that line. Entering, it gives the vibe of a small takeout dessert spot but with Hawaii vibes, like a little shack. The employees were super helpful, and nice. Where they kill it is in their quality. I was craving something cold and thought of shave ice. It certainly was refreshing and satisfying in the heat. I chose lychee, melona, and passion fruit as my 3 flavors along with Dole Whip inside and snow capped on top with sweetened condensed milk. Service was polite and good. Some of, if not the best, shave ice that I have ever had. Honestly, after I was three bites into it I was already planning when I would be visiting Brian's again next which should be later this week. They have a ton of flavor and filling options on the board so it's easy to get a new thing each time you visit. The whole staff was really polite and everything was made within a few minutes, so it was a very quick stop for us. It's attached to a small shopping center so the best place to park is in the underground or you can park on the street if there are any space available. This part of town gets very busy at night so the underground parking may be the easiest. Make sure to validate your ticket! Otherwise it will be $5. I chose Cherry and Red Velvet as my flavor combination and decided to fill it with popping pearls. The popping pearls have a sweet sugary center so it was a tremendous addition to the shave ice. I also got the condensed milk topper and would recommend that to anyone. We also got a scoop of a Dole Whip, which is always refreshing and a great pallet cleanser. I was honestly really impressed and will be back again very soon. I am lucky that I live and work close by so I will be a frequent customer and would strongly recommend to anyone. read more

I felt like I was transported to Hawaii for a few minutes stepping in here! Small, but inviting. There's a few benches for seating out front. It was a Sunday afternoon so we couldn't find any street parking unfortunately, but that's typical in this area. I love the texture of the shave ice here - it's softer and has a more fluffy texture than typical snow cones. I got the bottom feeder which I devoured - it's ube and haupia filled with macadamia nut ice cream which contains real pieces of macadamia nut! + a snow cap. I got the strawberries & creme for my husband and added the mac nut ice cream + mango. This one also comes with a snow cap. Deducting a star here because I don't like that they add $2 extra dollars for real strawberry if the real strawberry flavor is listed for that selection. I got my kids the rainbow which is filled with dole whip and has a snow cap. I think it should come with at least one more flavor/color to call it rainbow, but it was good. We all got kiddie sizes which are generous portions and it wasn't until I was done that I wished I had ordered the regular sized because it was so good! My total was about $34 though which seems a bit steep for 4 kiddie-sized shave ices though. read more

I'm not sure if I can say I've experience authentic Hawaiian shaved ice outside of Hawaii. The price is probably similar, the portions are good, but the taste and the amount of syrup on top of your shaved ice is sorta lacking. If I could recall my time at Matsumoto shaved ice, the rainbow colors would go deep into my bowl and every spoon is flavorful. This one, the flavor goes only 1 inch deep, the rest is just ice. After lunch at one of the many Japanese restaurants in Sawtelle, I felt the need for dessert. Brian's Shave Ice hit the spot. I had their shave ice combo called Sunset Beach. It had hawaiian punch, passion fruit, and mango syrup. A Hawaiian shave ice should be very finely shaved, light, and airy (no ice chucks). It was definitely authentic Hawaiian shave ice. The syrups were tasty. In addition to their pre-set combinations, you can pick your own combination of flavors (1 to 3). I think there were 25 syrup choices when we went. You can add a filling on the bottom of the shave ice (Fosselman's ice cream, Dole Pineapple Whip, mochi, lychee jelly, popping pearls, or red bean are filling options at an additional cost). They also offer ice cream or Dole whip by itself without the shave ice. They also serve hot or cold kona coffee when you think it is too cold for a cold dessert (I can eat shave ice in any weather). Brian's Shave Ice is a perfect place to end a meal after finishing at one of the many nearby restaurants. Next time in Sawtelle, I will definitely go back especially if it is a warm/hot day. read more

It looked authentic and was a good size, but the texture wasn't creamy until the bottom when the small amount of ice cream began to make its contributions known, and the flavors were both very light and not distinct enough from one another. This is on the corner of 2 major streets and the parking lot is tiny until you realize there's an underground parking lot for 30 minutes are free with a validation for this place. I did the li Hing, tigers blood and pog with a snow cap. To be honest, I couldn't really taste the flavors. I got a small one because they were huge, but there was a lot of liquid and I think they kind of blended together. I couldn't distinguish flavors but for what I wanted, which was something cold on a hot day and nearby for a fair price, this did it for me. No indoor seating, but benches outside. Not super busy. So I looked closer to home and found Brian's and it looked as if it were just as good. Upon receiving it, it looked very appetizing but as soon as I tasted it, there was just about no flavor. The service was good and they were friendly but for how slow they were, I would've expected some more flavor. I got POG, Banana, and Bkue Hawaii and I didn't taste just about any banana or blue Hawaii. The middle and bottom half of it was all plain ice and at one point I was just eating colored ice or even plain white ice so I threw it away. Definitely not worth the money and wont be going back here again. I'll definitely take the 2 hour drive to riverside for the other spot whenever I am craving shaved ice again. read more
