I grew up in South Buffalo so I was pleasantly surprised to find this place 2 blocks from my brothers house on my last visit. The beef short ribs are really good, and I would highly recommend them. I came in here to sit at the bar and watch the Bills game with a group of friends. Let me tell you, it was worth the drive! Fantastic bartender, great list of tap beers (even cider on tap for the non-beer drinkers), friendly crowd and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a ton of food. It was so good that after we ordered one appetizer, we ended up ordering more food ... then more ... then more ... I highly recommend the sausage pizza. Some of the best pizza I've had. The sauce was slightly sweet with the perfect sauce-to-cheese ratio. Crust was thin and just crispy enough. Good amount of sausage too - not too much, not too little. I wish this wasn't out in South Buffalo - regardless, I have a feeling that I will make the trek out here more often now. read more

Since moving into South Buffalo I have been meaning to try this place. Had a Sunday Brunch here and was definitely happy with the experience. Went around 1:30, place was not busy at all, which was to our benefit. Got seated and drink orders right away. Good Beer list here and a reasonable $5 a pint for most of them. For food, I got the breakfast pizza since it is a brick oven pizza place. Corned beef and hash for the wife and an order of French Toast for the kids to split. Food was ready quick and all was delicious. Pizza consisted of egg, sausage, ricotta, caramelized onions, and some tomato. Had a nice crisp thin crust to it as well. My kids ended up wanting the pizza over their french toast actually. Was a bit surprised at this as the french toast was very sweet with the mix of strawberry cream cheese, syrup, and whip cream. Could have been a desert really. I didn't mind trading some pizza for a bit of theirs. My wife loved the corned beef and hash, especially with the poached eggs on top. She said it was on of the best she ever had. For brunch I was happy with everything. Mmmm. I love this place. I would go as far as to say it's some of the best pizza in Buffalo. I've been to this wonderful establishment on two occasions, and have tried three different pizzas: Sausage - homemade pork sausage and hot peppers. Buffalo Chicken - homemade hot sauce, blue cheese, chicken, celery White - basil ricotta, prosciutto, tomatoes, and a little "salad" on top with arugula, lemon, and parmasen These pizzas are awesome. They are so thin and crispy (just how I like it), and the dough has a delicious charred taste from the flame of the brick oven. The first time I went with two others, we split two pizzas for three people, and the second time we split three pizzas between 4 people. Both times, we finished every slice! And what could be better? The beer selection! Brick Oven Bistro has an awesome selection on craft beer on tap, and a ton of bottled beers as well. The prices are very reasonable as well. At this point, I've been there at least 4 times since they opened a year ago & I'm upping my review to 5 stars. After having a few mediocre (or downright crappy) dining experiences lately, it's made me realize just how great this place it. Service from their friendly staff is always superb - ALWAYS! Beer & wine selection is amazing. The food gets better & better every time I go. Of note - that beef on weck pizza (yes, still!), steak sandwich (so many places give you overcooked/hard to chew meat, while Brick Oven's is tender & flavorful) and the carozza (tried this for the first time last week - we will now have to get it every time we go!) Every Wednesday in the local news there is a column alerting readers to all the new restaurants in downtown or the first ring of suburbs. I want to try them all. Last Friday found Me in South Buffalo in general and Abbott Rd in particular. I was drawn to a former grocery store that was buzzing. I was seated immediately and poured over the menu. It was Friday and I am still an altar boy at heart so I decided on the Pasta and Scollops. My reward was heavenly. Very wide noodles intertwined with zucchini bathed in a white sauce. The sauce was the most delicate I have ever tasted. It complemented the pasta perfectly. The dish was crowned by three perfect Scollops. They had a nice subtle brown crust and were very tender. There I was in Buffalo's little Dublin enjoying one of the finest Mediterranean Meals I have ever had. My hat is off to the staff, I shall return. read more

This was one of the first restaurants I visited when I first moved to Buffalo and was temporarily displaced on the southside. Brick Over Bistro is completely different than anything else I saw while living in South Buffalo. I went there for several brunches by myself and, even though the move was very depressing, the servers were incredibly sweet and would always lift up my spirits. The food was quite simply amazing every time. I took my boyfriend there once when he came to visit me and he still raves about the fact that they mix their feta with a bit of cream cheese. Make sure you come after noon (for mimosas) and you should be quite pleased to get such a fine dining experience at a low price! read more

Ok, we came here for Sunday brunch this morning. It was surprisingly good. 'hangover burrito' was filled with eggs, cheddar, sausage and home fries. It was very good, but a bit small for the price, compared to other restaurant's similar burrito. About the size of a super mighty burrito for $10. Nothing on the side. My husband got the steak and fried egg sandwich for the same price. It was huge and delicious with homefries,on the side. The place has a nice bar area with great selections of craft beer. Wow! We've driven past this place for years and finally remembered about it when trying to figure out what to do for dinner. Boy are we glad we did! We got an order of Charlie's wings and a Big Brick Spark pizza and both were excellent! Everything was nice and spicy, which is always a good thing in our opinion. I wanted to try this place last time I was in Buffalo but ran out of time so I was happy when my father and I went there for dinner last night. The service was great and the pizza was amazing. I ordered the chicken pesto which was absolutely delicious, if I were a glutton I would have finished it but I ended up having three pieces to enjoy for lunch the next day. This was a cool restaurant that had a nice vibe and design inside. However, the bistro white pizza that I ordered was not very good. The pizza sauce base was supposed to be a light ricotta spread, but instead, there was about 10 lbs of ricotta (exaggeration). This made the pizza very hard to eat. Not only was my pizza not very good, my friends' pizza had random pieces of food/ingredients that were not supposed to be on the there (this shows that there is a disorganized kitchen and a careless kitchen staff) Not to mention that two of my friends had to wait just over 5 minutes for someone to refill their drinks. Our office ordered lunch from here today, 7/21. Someone ordered a BLT. Pretty simple right? You'd think so.. Bacon was literally BLACK. BURN TO A CRISP. And whatever cook sent that out the window, just LET it go out the window without a care in the world. First of all, as a former chef, this raises concern. We ordered 2 of the soft pretzels for appetizers, and they were nothing more than a grocery store size pretzel, EXTREMELY disapointing when I expected a huge soft possibly homemade pretzel. Whatever, moving on, the 4 of us ordered pizzas, maybe a 12" pizza each, I got Beef on Weck which was surprisingly good. Tom got Steak and Egg which was excellent. LOVE this place! One of my fav places to go. The French Onion soup is amazing...maybe the best I've ever had. The beef on weck pizza is also great! Prices are such that you expect better quality table settings, but server either leaves soiled silverware between courses or you have to ask for a replacement; big box of napkins on table.. Note to owners, when you charge $15 for a small pizza, your business is in a different category than a pizza shop--don't try so hard to be so bad! We've been waiting so long for our dinner to arrive that I don't even care what it tastes like anymore. ^That was going to be my review last night. I waited to see if anything would happen to change my mind. It did. When our dinner finally arrived, my salad had no dressing on it. The walnuts on the salad were candied walnuts which the waitress hadn't described or I wouldn't have ordered it. The side of dressing the waitress brought was flavorless. I found out from another person at my table that the basket of bread, which took an hour to get to our table, only got there because someone got up and asked if our waitress would please bring us some. In our interminable wait for our meals, she never once came to ask if we wanted our drinks refreshed. It was the worst restaurant experience I've had in a long time, and the quality of the food didn't come anywhere near to making up for the terrible service. My son's chicken parm was so flavorless he finally put ketchup on it in the hopes it would be easier to finish eating. Not recommended at all. read more

DON'T PLAN ANY FUNCTIONS HERE .... WILDLY UNRELIABLE ! I attempted to plan my 50th birthday party at the bistro. My wife called and made reservations. We were told, "That's not a problem we can either get you in here or at the restaurant (the former Victoria Square in Lackawanna) " Two weeks went by and we never heard from anyone. My wife called to confirm the reservation and was told," We couldn't possibly do that, we have a wedding." We HAD RESERVATIONS, plans were made and invitations sent. This last-minute, incomprehensible change had the effect of ruining my party completely. Out-of-town guests didn't come. Close friends and made other plans because they thought the event was canceled. The party of 20 that I have planned for this reduced to having a sandwich and beer with one friend. Had they been upfront about not being able to service us ... that would've been one thing... But to cancel reservations with no contact whatsoever is simply incompetence. Here is the response I got from management: "Again sorry for the mix up. I do remember receiving at the message about your party. I believe I attempted to reach your wife Carol a couple times, leaving messages. We were not taking in big parties at the bistro that night due to running short staffed due to my partner's daughter's wedding & our involvement in the Irish feis." My wife and I both have cell phones and the answering machine is on 24/7. WE ALREADY HAD RESERVATIONS NO ATTEMPT TO CONTACT US WAS EVER MADE. THEY JUST DECIDED TO LEAVE US IN A LURCH. I've always been an advocate for neighborhood places over chains and South Buffalo IS my neighborhood. But I will never again set foot in this place. Being a Mercy Girl, I was surprised to return to my old stomping ground and finding this restaurant. It looks much smaller than it is from the outside. There is a large bar and plenty of seating. We came with 8 adults and 2 kids for dinner. Ordered a bunch of different pizzas to share. My favorite was the mushroom pizza with carmelized onions. The buffalo chicken pizza was much spicier than I like and would have appreciated the option to make it milder. The beef on weck pizza was unique and delicious. We also had the baileys cheesecake which tasted funny to me (I'm not sure if it was the baileys but it had a strong cheese flavor - almost like it was spoiled) but my friend finished it. We felt a little rushed by the service although it may have been that we were more focused on catching up than deciding what to eat. But it didn't seem like there was a wait for our table. Went for dinner with 3 other friends. I'm afraid I ordered the wrong dish. They all liked their meals but I ordered the risotto with scallops and in my experience risotto has always been served in the consistency of a porridge more or less. Their version was more like fried rice with mixed veggies and over cooked scallops. It didn't have much taste to it. I was very disappointed. The service was great. The restaurant was full on a Saturday night and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The plates that went by us destined for other tables looked good. Went here for Sunday brunch and was absolutely delighted with the experience. It was a beautiful Sunday and not too crowded at all, but we decided to sit at the bar anyways. The beer selection was great -- I had a Resurgence Summer Saison and a Sculpin IPA, both were crisp and refreshing. My boyfriend and I split the breakfast pizza and the eggs benedict and both were pretty fantastic - flavorful, well-prepared, and priced right for the portion sizes. The hollandaise sauce had some sort of delightful chipotle seasoning which took it to the next level. I ordered the mushroom pizza (with gluten free dough) and the pizza was delicious!! The crust was thin, but not burnt. You could tell they put a lot of effort in making the food presentable, too. We stopped at this neighborhood pizzeria and it was pretty decent, not the best pizza I have ever had, but not the worse. Based on the reviews, we ordered the sausage pizza. Supposedly, the sausage is homemade, that I am not buying. However, the pizza has a wonderful spice because of the cherry peppers they add. Quite frankly, that is what truly makes the pizza.
