Visited this afternoon for lunch with family. I had the Cuban Sammy which was delicious. It was definitely enough for two meals...generous portions of meat, just the right amount of the mustard, and the pickles were great! Nicely toasted bread done just right. My mom got the Smashed burger and offered a taste...lots of cheese, bacon "jelly" and a bbq sauce made it a hit! The fries that came with both were lightly flavored with vinegar and sea salt. My dad got the Whitefish and said it was very good. My cousin ordered the chicken croissant and while she liked it, it didn't seem like anything special..just a chicken salad...with onions and celery rather than cranberries which some in my party mentioned a preference for. Very nice edgy modern ambiance...2 walls of nearly floor to ceiling windows...view of the water. People are dressed nicely. Beef brisket was very good...highly recommend that. Scallops were also good. Tuna poke was good but rather spicy. The beef tartare is seared and very flavorful with a little kick to it. I highly recommend the corn bisque... my son said it tasted like cornbread which I have to say I agree. The crab cakes were pretty good...not too bready but with a nice crunchy crust. For dessert, the buttermilk cheesecake was outstanding and beautifully presented..fun to eat. You'll have to get it to understand what I'm talking about. Bread pudding is also worth getting. This is going to be a very narrow, subjective viewpoint on very specific few items my family had so please take this reading with a grain of salt. Drink choices were water with lemon and some sort of a lavender cocktail that I cannot remember the name of. Tap water was brought out with no lemon, and when asked for some, our server brought two pieces of sliced lemon for three of us.. No big deal. Not a dealbreaker in the grand scheme of things, for service level is usually not a big part of my reviews. The cocktail was mediocre. Almost wished we got the "momosa bar" that allows us to mix our own drinks. Food we ordered were kimchi hash and chicken & corn waffles from the brunch menu. My Korean curiosity couldn't help but order the kimchi hash, which consisted of pork belly, potatoes and kimchi with a few other veggies. On paper, there's absolutely nothing wrong with this combo. In fact, kimchi and pork belly are considered to be one of perfect matches in Korean commoners' food circle. However, I gotta say their dish left us with nothing but disappointments. It's no secret amongst my circle of friends and coworkers that I'm not a huge fan of "fusion" cuisine because I believe it's *very* difficult to walk the fine line of meshing the complex taste of "traditional" food we grow up with and learn to expect with new twists. Don't give me wrong. If done right, they can taste great! I've certainly experienced that myself, although I will fully disclaim that even then, I still prefer the traditional route. BTW, let's not get into the philosophical discussion of what constitutes as "fusion" and "traditional." I can agree any traditional food always changes throughout time, hence it can always be considered fusion. But my viewpoint deals more with those who fail understand the fundamentals of what the particular dish is trying to deliver to you. First and foremost, when you cook with kimchi, you simply do not use underfermented kimchi. You may as well call it Napa cabbage hash in this case. To put it in perspective, it's like deep frying pieces of cucumbers and calling them pickle fries. Fail-point two: there are times you use butter and there are times you use oil. Then there are times you should use neither. Pork belly naturally has a lot of fat. Use too much butter, if any, you're only gonna kill its natural flavor and make the dish greasy. And that's exactly what happened. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know anyone who puts a block of butter when pan frying bacon, do you? All the other veggies, including potatoes and cabbage (a.k.a. kimchi) were soaked in grease and made it very unpleasant for us to eat. Compared to kimchi hash, chicken and corn waffles were a little better, although not by much. Chicken & waffles is an acquired taste to begin with. Idea is to combine the hearty fried chicken with starchy waffles and mix in the sweetness of maple syrup. But when your chicken batter is sweet, and your waffle has extra cornbread texture, then add more syrup? It tips the balance over to being overly sweet. Taken separately, chicken could have been interesting, and I definitely could appreciate the cornbread waffles individually. But combined together? Nah.... Combined with loud, potty-mouthed twenty-something groups hanging out next to us with no regard to their surroundings, I'm pretty sure it will be the last time we dine here. I understand it's a hotel-restaurant and if I wasn't with my family I might have been a tiny bit more understanding. But it was brunch on a Sunday. I would hope even the blood-pumping twenty-somethings might slow things down on Sunday brunch, but maybe I'm putting too much faith in humanity. read more

Fun night out. I think Brim House had been open only for three weeks. The service was excellent. The food very good. They have a nice craft beer selection. And a nice atmosphere. On a Friday night, there was a decent crowd. I had shrimp and corn chowder which was the highlight. Very interesting presentation. Tasty. A must. As an appetizer my wife had vinegar French fries with a dill dip. They were good. And I couldn't stop helping. For dinner I had duck. Also a very interesting presentation with an egg. And also good. This is AMAZING and hands down the best restaurant in Toledo. I've lived here for two years and moved from Boston and San Diego. I've felt like all foods in Ohio are salty and buttered up. Here, the flavors were exquisite!! I came here for graduation brunch with my aunt, cousin, and fiancé to also celebrate our engagement. I ordered the corn waffle and chicken with a sausage gravy - SO SO GOOD. My fiancé got the Nashville hot chicken (I liked mine better) and for dessert, it was SO good. We ordered cheesecake and creme brûlée expecting the typical desserts but they sounded good. When they came out it was a question of which one was which because the desserts were deconstructed. This was actually one of the best restaurants I've eaten in. I was passing through Toledo on the way to Detroit and thought that it would be a culinary dead zone. I was proven dead wrong after eating here. We ordered - squash appetizer - chicken lollipops - fried chicken The portions are huge, so beware. The chicken lollipops were some of the most tender, juicy chicken I've had. It was sous vide, finished in oven, and then smoked. Fall off the bone tender. Fried chicken came with Mac and cheese, which was rich and creamy. Fried chicken was very good - buttermilk marinated and very crispy. Overall, excellent meal. So let's start with food. Myself and a couple new friends had stopped by to check it out since the opening. Food was so good! Flavors were definitely there. We got lamp chops, mac and cheese, fries, mussels and the tomato salad (sorry, i forget the exact names) to share I think everything had their own highlights. The lamb was super tender and left me wanting more. The mac and cheese had nice depth of flavor - it was creamy like normal mac and cheese but it was something else. Fries I think were one of our favorite, we all kept fighting over it and the dill dip. They complemented each other well. The mussels, I felt just were mussels you found most places, nothing too crazy. Last but not least, the tomato salad: i felt this was a nice palatte cleanser. It was so fresh and vibrant. And the goat cheese was just icing on top of the cake. Now to switch over, service. In terms of our waiter, he was great. Super friendly, relatable. He checked on us frequently to see how we were doing. The biggest complaint we had here was probably the wait for the food. I arrived a bit late and my friends had ordered about 10-15 minutes before i arrived and I think we still managed to wait a decent amount. Had a working lunch here while sitting at the bar. Fantastic service from Monica who recommended the Cuban Sandwich. My associate is from South Florida, and I struggle to find a Cuban to my high standard... Monica accepted the challenge on behalf of the kitchen. WOW. Amazing Sandwich! Fantastic from start to finish. Walking in, it has a very cosmopolitan ambience. We thought it looked more like a restaurant that should be in Chicago - not in Toledo. Decor was also very sleek and stylish. Service was excellent, and not rushed. Manager came over numerous times to say hello, and check how everything was. We tried (3) shared appetizers, and entree, and a dessert. All were phenomenal - and a bit unique. We tried the poke, the corn soup and carrots 3 ways, as well as the scallops and bread pudding. While I can't wait to return, I will be torn on whether to try something new - as so much looked good, or to have some of these same great dishes. Brim House is on the ground floor of the Renaissance Hotel. Parking was scant due to a conference and a wedding I believe. I didn't use the valet or street parking just the $5 hotel surface lot. The atmosphere was excellent. Went on a Saturday night about 6:15 and it was packed and lively by 6:45. I didn't have a reservation but I would consider calling ahead because I was fortunate to be seated. The food I'd say was 4 stars and certainly more like $$$ rather than the $$ currently posted on Yelp (For Chicago sure it's $$). Either way the creative menu was worth the price atmosphere and service. I tried the Artichoke Pasta, smoked drumsticks and shrimp and grits. All of them were creative and tasty. As for our 2 entrees... they were average. I got fried chicken, which was 2 large crispy chicken breasts on risotto. They were just too big and tasted starchy. I don't recommend this for $29. My husband got short ribs, which weren't tender enough for supposedly being cooked for 2-3 days. The bread pudding was good and had a nice presentation. I wasn't blown away though. The food we got would all cost a total of $40 in any southern restaurant, yet our bill was closer to $100. read more

The food here was great! The bread they serve prior to the meals was delicious. Ordered the brisket and the portobella dish. They were generous with the portion size of the brisket. The brisket was cooked well and did not taste over cooked at all. I was especially surprised with the portobella dish. This place was phenomenal! I loved it. The venue has a cool modern, industrial vibe which I thought was a good feel especially with the floor to ceiling windows. Ample room for a big group. We got the Cuban Sammy which was $16. I thought it was good. It wasn't the best but it was good. It's a big sandwich so you might have to bring the other half home. The meat was cooked perfectly. It was juicy. The only thing I had a problem with was the roasted pork. It was hard to take a bite off because you end up dragging the entire meat out of the sandwich. It was soft but it was also difficult to cut. The fries it came with were amazing! It was seasoned with Parmesan and salt. We also had the chicken carbonara for $22. It was good! It came with fried egg. The yolk wasn't cooked all the way so you get that runny texture all over the pasta which, at first, was weird but it tasted so good. I've had carbonaras before but this was so good because of how thick and juicy the bacon was. I recommend this place to everyone! The service was great. The host and I think it was the manager were really welcoming and nice. Made me really want to be there and invite all my friends next time. Fast service and they inform you if they're short staffed and have a bit of a wait which the wait wasn't bad for me at all. read more

So much so as I would encourage you to try something on there that you "think" you won't like. You will probably be surprised. The food was perfectly executed! We stopped in here for a nice dinner but really? These prices were way more expensive than what we paid for at an upscale restaurant in Hawaii......in Toledo? Never again. First of all, when we walked up the host asked if a table was fine. When we asked if we could have a booth, she said she didn't think any were available but in fact there were 4 all right by each other. After being seated, we got our drinks fine (ordering some wine that you can get at Walmart for $14.00 and they charged $42.00). When given our menus (which does not reflect the website), we asked our waitress what the house steak was, she was unable to give us an answer. The only other steak they had available was $61.00. I decided to order octopus for an appetizer and when it came out it was cold. I asked our waitress if it was suppose to be served warn or cold, she didn't have an answer for that either. We were so disappointed by this time, we started ordering the $18.00 hamburgers. I ordered mine medium....she said that there were two thinly cut patties so it was hard to cook it to any specifications. They seemed over cooked, not how I like my meat at all.....I could get a better hamburger almost anywhere. The best part of the meal were the French fries. This was NOT upscale eating....the atmosphere was wonderful, the waitress was nice but needed to be a little more educated on the food they serve. Definately unique to Toledo (there are a couple other unique places i.e. Registry) but much needed. Good portions. Great service. Located with nice decor in a beautiful modern hotel. A great stop even if your not staying at the motel, but not sure how parking would work because the require you to pay 22.00 for valet. Maybe park a block away and walk.
