I wish this app had 0 stars to be completely honest. Me and my family came to this restaurant while visiting Salem to have a few drinks and enjoy some appetizers. We ordered our drinks first and later decided to put in a couple of appetizers. After waiting 30 minutes for 2 appetizers in a somewhat empty restaurant, we politely asked for the food to be taken off the bill and we would pay for the drinks and leave. We had not even received, nevermind consumed, the food thus far. The waiter did not accept this completely justifiable proposition and brought over the owner; an epitome of pure unprofessionalism, who haggled us for not wanting our food after waiting so long. He not only argued with us for wanting to pay for our drinks and leave, he kicked us out! He refused to let us pay for anything and simply yelled at us to leave. The cherry on top; we may have been not but 2 minutes down the street after leaving, when 2 policemen approached us on the sidewalk. They asked us about the situation in a manner that made it seem like we refused to pay and left the restaurant, which at that point left my mother in tears. The owner had kicked us out, refused to let us pay, and then called the cops on us, insinuating we left without paying! I'd put this somewhere inbetween 3 and 4 stars. Food seemed to be a bit above average but seemed to be a bit overpriced for what you're getting here. The menu was a bit limited to begin with and I would have liked to see more seafood. They were also out of a couple things that we tried to order first which cuts down the options further. I'd like to see most dishes come down by $2-3 or see improvements made in either the menu or location. I'm not sure what it is exactly but I didn't feel that it was quite worth the price. read more

On a sun-filled Sunday a few weeks back a four-top eagerly headed to Brodie's Seaport for some local fare. There had been some recent local publicity (Thrillist.com, Salem Food Tours) surrounding the creations flowing out of the kitchen that made me intrigued with my second go-round. We opened with the fried calamari and some refreshing Yuengling draft. The calamari was lightly fried and had a decent mix of rings and tentacles accompanied with sliced jalapeno and marinara. Good start to the afternoon. I proceeded to get the haddock piccata, which was excellent. Had a great balance of lemon and caper that blended well with the perfectly cooked fish that flaked with the brush of my fork. My other mates went the seafood route as well and dove into the grilled salmon, lobster roll, and scallop roll. Everyone commended the food and proceed to go back in for more. We closed this round with the keylime pie, which if there was a surprise in the meal, this was it. We all enjoyed the presentation and really felt that overall the dish was extremely light to close out our late lunch. I'd say they people who posted 5 stars are either friends of the owner, staff or have a very limited experience with good food. If it wasn't for our incredibly sweet waitress and a great glass of wine, I'd say this place is a total waste of time. Instead I'll be polite and say grab a beer or wine and pass on the food. I might be a bit of a foodie but I'm no snob by far. As long as the food is good and the place is clean, I can eat anywhere. In fact the night before I had way better food while camping, which we cooked in the dark over the camp fire. We ordered a burger (usually a safe bet) and a fried scallop dish. The burger was way over cooked (when I ask for medium rare, I don't expect burnt hockey puck), the bread was rubbery and dunked in butter (news flash cooks putting butter on everything doesnt make it better), the potatoe salad was undercooked and covered in a watery mayo, it didnt have any flavor even after a unhealthy does of salt. The scallops were mushy and slightly bitter. If you expect so-so pub food you'll be delighted but if you want a good meal, I'd skip the place. Walking around the block we went past "62", which was highly rated on yelp but a litle pricy, the food looked fantastic and it made me wish I hadn't gone the cheap route. Lesson learned. read more

Brought a group to eat here for lunch. We read the rave reviews about the Lobster Roll and we all got some variation of this. The Lobster Roll is definitely one of the best on the North Shore - I mean seriously on the top 3 of contenders. I ordered a salad with lobster on top (which wasn't on the menu but they happily obliged). Salad was good, good varieties of lettuce, toast points would have been a good addition. Everyone in our party got the lobster roll and was happy with it - they have a variety of sides like grilled asparagus, potato salad, pasta salad etc. Sitting outside was nice. Good people watching. Staff was friendly. I like this guy's story - he had a career change and decided to open a restaurant, and the food is GREAT! Looks nice inside - they have a full bar, cool modern style inside. Not bad. Stopped here for dinner one evening and sat outside. They weren't super busy, and as such, the service was much slower than it should have been. Took an awfully long time for anybody to come take a drink order. We had a toddler with us, and the slow service was thus a problem. I really just wanted some crackers or a roll for him. Went for lunch on a Sunday afternoon-took about five minutes to seat us because there was no waitress/host at the desk. After finally being seated, it took about 10 minutes to get water. I order a burger and my girlfriend ordered a grilled cheese (two of the most basic options) and it took over 30 minutes to get our food. I overheard one of the waitresses tell a customer that the kitchen wasn't busy so I don't understand why it took so long to get our food. We didn't get offered refills on our water until about halfway through our meal. This was honestly one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. The only thing that keeps it from being the worst is the waitress was pleasant...just really slow. I would NOT recommend this restaurant at all. read more

We had a very good meal here on a recent weeknight. We liked the menu choices and prices immediately. There are many sandwich options to choose from, which include sides of salads or veggies or starches, and most are about $6.95. Examples are: chicken parm, grilled chicken, sirloin burger, steak tip burger, etc. Fried plates are about $14.00 and include 2 sides. Lobster rolls come in 2 sizes, regular for $10, and FAMOUS (can't recall the price). I had the fried scallop plate ($14) which comes with a choice of 2 sides. The plate was huge, the scallops large, tender, perfectly cooked, and very lightly battered. The squash medley side was also very good, not the usual watery and tasteless mess that restaurants often offer. My partner had the salmon sandwich, with an enormous side of potato salad. He said the salmon was noticeably fresh and flavorful. We found the food to be excellent quality, the portions generous, and the prices great. It's the best value on the Derby Street/Pickering Wharf area. That said, service was quite slow, so don't go there if you're in a hurry. The people-watching was interesting, and provided some entertainment while we sat outside and waited for our meals. They don't seem to have any host staff, so you just sort of walk up and wait until someone sees you and seats you. The decor is an interesting mix of elegant chairs and eclectic booths inside, and non-matching table sets outside. I don't care what it looks like; we will return, for fresh, well-prepared seafood in a casual atmosphere, at great prices! p.s. dogs are welcome in the outside patio area. read more

I popped into Brodie's for a coke & a quick snack..A very bad Idea..they don't really do takeout.. sit-down only...So I had to sit at a table to wait almost 40 minutes for 3 cokes & an order of Chi ken Tenders.. The Waitress we had was very nice & understood we just wanted some quick takeout..Her attitude as well as most of the other waitress's seemed a bit annoyed, not by the customers but more towards the management & Brodie's Service.. The waitress's ran around constantly on the move..The reason being the manager which seemed to me a bit of a task master.. it made us uncomfortable.. We were promptly were brought our cokes they were small but we were given a free refill.. On to the food..Not impressed at all..our single order of Chicken Tenders took approx 35-40 to get..We saw what looked like cooks coming going from the kitchen just kind of taking their time...Needless to say the service was extremely slow... The food we did see come out of the kitchen was not very good looking to the eye..no attention to plating sloped on a plate..small portions as well. we overheard 2 other tables complain about the food, slow service, portion size, and above average prices.. Picked Brodies since it was a beautiful day to sit outside. We were seated right away. We were waited on by Nick, who was super friendly & attentive even though he was covering the bar also. I had the burger special which came with Jack Daniel caramelized onions - highly recommend - delicious. He had the whole belly clam also cooked perfectly. The owner even came over to see how we liked everything and stayed to chat for abit. He gave us the frequent diner card, good deal, not many places offer this. Since we are local will definitely take advantage. Parking is a little tough in the area but that is just how the wharf is. Went to Brodie's for lunch. Have been there before and had a good experience. However, today we waited 1 hour. 30min for a crab cake appetizer and then another 30 min for salads with chicken. Even worse, when it did finally come (which we were patient since prior visits we're good) the chicken came uncooked. They literally had microwaved it. It was horrible. We sent back both salads and asked for the check. We didn't even get the appetizer comped which I think would have helped save face. Also, to add the place was empty. Asked for a burger a certain way and it was sent out completely wrong. I went to the bathroom as my boyfriend asked for the burger off the check that was 1. Sent out completely wrong and 2. Not eaten whatsoever.. I could hear the owner getting mad at the server for HIS terrible food that he sent out, not to mention getting mad at my boyfriend for asking to not pay for the food he was too disgusted to eat. Can't give it a 3, but 4 may be a bit too high. That being said, this place is great. Recently purchased by the owner of Brodie's in Peabody, apparently some menu favorites from Brodie's have come over. I had the chicken teriyaki pocket, the ladyfriend had what I believe was the Cape Cod wrap. We split the sandwiches and both were pretty awesome. Chicken Teriyaki wrap lived up to the billing, everything tasted fresh and was full of flavor. The cranberry mayo on the Cape Cod wrap was excellent. Both sandwiches were prepared well and didn't fall apart near the end. You'd think that wasn't a big deal, but a lot of places can't get that right. Someone in the kitchen gives a damn about the little details and that goes a long way. With our sandwiches we split a garden salad with balsamic dressing, which was way different than any balsamic I've had...in a great way. The salad was big for a side salad and full of good mixed greens. The ladyfriend got a side of baked beans with her sammich and I have to say, I could have gone there for those alone, this wasn't just a can of Bush's. Highly recommended side for your sammich, if that's an option. The $2.50 PBR pounder did me just fine, didn't check out the rest of the menu. We were on the dog friendly patio and the service, while slow from the kitchen, was just fine because the hosting station and our waitress were extremely attentive. All in all, an underrated place in Salem that I hope to see get more love. Not at expensive and hoity-toity as other places on the Wharf and definitely not a bro-fest like eateries downtown. I had dinner here tonight with my wife and was not disappointed. The staff was very attentive and kept checking on us while we were making our decisions and provided us with some suggestions. We started with some drinks and a calamari appetizer. The beer list is full of local beers. I recommend the Two Roads IPA. Very good and paired very well with my dinner. The calamari was lightly fried and severed with hot peppers and very good tomato sauce. We went here specifically for the lobster roll. We had heard that it was one of the best on the North Shore. I was not disappointed, as someone that has lived in New England their entire life, and lived for many years in Maine I have eaten many lobster rolls and consider my self a lobster roll aficionado. The roll had a light mayo on it and was served on a hot dog bun with some fresh lettuce. There was no filler and the roll was over flowing. It was fresh and I watched the chef prepare the roll. My wife had the Seafood Marinara that was full of scallops and shrimp. We were both very pleased with the meal. The best part of the meal was when the chef came out to check on us and if we liked the meal. I believe his name was Mike, he talked with such passion and enthusiasm for his food. He was proud and humbled that we drove from Central MA to try the award winning lobster roll. This little gesture really impresses me when I go to a restaurant; it makes you feel at home and welcome. It also shows that the chef cares about his/her food and the product they are putting out. Mike did a great job, and his love of food was definitely evident. I went here for lunch with a friend. the service was great and the food was good. Had I known about their lobster rolls I'd have gone for one, instead I got a chicken parm sandwich that was so large i had to eat it with a fork. The toasted ciabatta bread was worth every calorie. the fries are battered, which I love but I know isn't for everyone. The price was not bad, for 2 people it totaled around $20. Certainly not the cheapest sandwich, fries and soda I've ever had but not the most expensive. All in all a good solid lunch spot. read more

I love the Chicken Broccoli Zitti here.. actually I am going to go get some right now... it is to die for and the garlic bread is great. they are very willing to work with you on any order and they are very friendly. The owner of the restaurant is on site almost every night so you know he wants to succeed. They have lots of live music and the sunday jazz is insanely good. The wait staff has gotten much better and they are very attentive to the patrons. If you are coming to Salem and want good food with a great atmosphere and reasonable prices. This is the place! Last night we went to Brodie's Seaport for music. The night was ruined by an overzealous bouncer in jeans and a black top who terrorized two very drunk lesbian women at the bar. They were getting overly amorous with each other in front of everyone. But the response from this man was over the top in all ways. At one point it was borderline assault. There are many ways to handle a problem and I've been in enough situations in bars Over the years to know There is no one to answer to a problem. Its a great place to sit outside and enjoy lunch. Their service was good and their turkey sandwich on a pretzel role is highly recommended! Who doesn't love eating a sandwich on a fresh pretzel? The place can get a little crowded on nights when they have live bands. I'd recommend staying away from it on one of these nights if you're looking for a relaxing time. read more

I go here often for the lobster roll. I think it is the best around. No frills to it, just lobster on a buttered roll, with a small side. You can also get the famous roll, which is served on a hamburger bun and two sides... but I usually just stick with the regular portion. After a full day of running errands and doing chores, we decided to go to Brodie's Seaport for dinner. We saddled up to our favorite seats at the bar, ordered drinks, Crispy Fried Jumbo Wings, and a Garden Salad to start. IMHO, I think Brodie's wings are the best around! They are perfectly cooked, meaty, and simply delicous (we order them well done w/ sauce on the side). The salad was fresh, cool, and crisp. For dinner, he had the Steak Frites and I had the freshly caught Gloucester Striped Bass. He said the chargrilled Steak and Steak Fries were excellent! My Striped Bass was fantastic - it was pan seared in a Chardonnay Cream Sauce and served with Mixed Steamed Veggies and Basamati Rice. I opted for Cole Slaw instead of rice but after I saw the Steak Fries I ordered a side (so much for low carb eating ...). I was happy that the Chardonnay Cream Sauce did not overwhelm the fish - it was light, flavorful, and a perfect complement. Because the Key Lime Pie was the dessert of the day and, more importantly homemade, we decided to share one. It was excellent! The staff, Chef, and service at Brodie's are great and they have one of the best locations in town. Went with friends for dinner on a Friday night in July. The place was not very busy. The wait staff was very friendly but somewhat immature and fairly untrained (a friend asked for a virgin daiquiri and the server was unfamiliar with the term "virgin" in the context of alcohol). The food was not bad (good burgers - yes, we ate burgers at a place with "sea" in the name) and the beer list was fine (can't go wrong with Shipyard). Can't really complain, though we benefited from it being barely busy. Nothing all that special. Maybe the new management is still working the bugs out. Great location by the ferry. We were looking for a place to have our wedding after party since most of our guests were staying at The Salem Waterfront Hotel and the Hawthorne Hotel up the street. It was a Sunday wedding in August and everyplace we looked in to... would not keep their kitchen open later than 10pm....Not Brodie's! My brother-in-law spoke with the owner and he was sooooo accommodating! We pre-ordered some apps so when guests arrived around 10:30pm there were some snacks... the bartenders were awesome as well! The fried clams and chicken fingers were seriously amazing! We ended up ordering a few more rounds of hot appetizers and they were delicious! So if you're looking to have an event or large group party at Brodie's Seaport we highly recommend it... it is family owned and operated and they take great pride in that! The boyfriend and I were roaming Salem, enjoying the cooler weather, and were happy to see a new restaurant. Of course, we had to give it a try! I've read the other reviews, and those that discuss the slow service are right- it was incredibly slow. Our waiter was very nice, but he seemed overwhelmed and never checked on us once our food came. He even delivered the bill and never returned to pick it up so we had to go inside and pay. I did see a man, possibly the owner, walking around the tables and asking people (us included) how they liked their meal, and just generally chatting so that was a nice thing to see. The food was fine. I felt the prices were a little bit high, but I did like the myriad side dish options. It's not often you can pick two and get two starches. That's another odd thing- there was 1 vegetable offered, and it looks to be a permanent side (asparagus). Where was the veggie of the day? I know they're new so I'm really giving them the benefit of the doubt, but their menu was pretty limited compared to other places in the area. The outdoor seating is great. You can sit under umbrellas so you don't bake in the sun, and it's so nice to sit by the water (well, sort of near the water) and people watch. The seating inside the restaurant looked nice too. Maybe next time, we'll try inside so I can really compare. I would go back to the Seaport Cafe, and it was a nice enough experience. However, they really need to have faster service. The meal wait time was extremely long, and as I said, our waiter only checked on us when delivering the food and then the check. That service won't cut it in the long run as tourists in Salem, and regulars, tend to be picky about that sort of stuff. I wish them luck though, and did see a couple of meals that I would like to try. If you're passing by, definitely take a gander. Their desserts (inside at the register) looked awesome too. read more

First off, I love the chairs at this place. Very comfy. And the bathrooms are clean and not gross and cramped like a lot of places. We were there on Halloween weekend, which could have been a nightmare. On the contrary. We were there for quite a long time because it was freezing outside, so I just stayed there. The lobster wantons rocked, very tasty, maybe a little pricey for 5 wantons, but it is stuffed with lobster. The clam chowder went down smooth. After we were there a couple hours, we got burgers and fries. DELICIOUS, perfectly cooked, and the fries tasted great even when we left them sitting too long and they got cold. The fries are very crispy, coated with something. The staff was remarkable. It was very busy, but everyone was friendly. Other servers came up and asked if everything was ok, because our server had been very busy. They have each others' backs. We saw the owner, who appeared very personable, and concerned that things were running smoothly. We never met him before, so it was nice to see him take an active role. The chicken was really good, and a huge portion. The corn was super fresh and crispy. Yum. Free refills on iced tea even though they dont have it on the menu. Score.
