This place is so close to getting 5 stars and it's frustrating that it isn't there. Brooklyn's Brick Oven Pizzeria is another pizza chain that was established by members of Patsy Grimaldi's family. These pizza joints stick to the Grimaldi's formula which involves baking their pies in a coal-fired oven. Generally speaking, you can go into one of these pizzerias and fully expect to have a 5-star pizza. Our daughter recently moved to New Jersey when she accepted a job transfer. Both she and our son-in-law have been yearning to go to Grimaldi's but the closest one to them is in Hoboken. We had hoped to get there but the weather kept us from doing so. Then our daughter checked Yelp and discovered that the highest rated pizza in Hackensack was this one. Some reviewers even said that if you can't get to Hoboken, this one is as good as it gets. So...off we went. We got here shortly before 5 p.m. on a Friday and our timing was perfect as the place wasn't busy at that hour. Hackensack Avenue is basically Route 17 so getting into the parking lot is easy but exiting is difficult due to the high volume of traffic and no traffic lights. When we entered, we all noticed the wonderful smell of pizza baking in a coal-fired oven. Next, our daughter noticed the fake grapevines that decorated the walls. She commented on how Robert Irvine gets practically apoplectic when he sees them in restaurants. As for us---we don't mind. All we care about is if the place is clean and the pizza is good. We were seated immediately. Our server was friendly and attentive. For an appetizer, we ordered a mozzarella and tomato salad. This consists of "homemade mozzarella cheese and sliced tomato marinated with olive oil, garlic, onions and seasonings". It was attractively presented with large ripe, red slices of tomato that was topped with a thick slice of mozzarella. This sat on a bed of romaine lettuce. Also, in this dish were some pitted black and green olives plus 2 breadsticks. We were also given some olive oil, white vinegar and balsamic vinegar. This salad was delicious. The mozzarella was just firm enough and held up well when cut. It had a nice, creamy texture. With the first bite, we all tasted the garlic. Most of us ate it without adding any oil or vinegar---that's how good it was on its own. For pizzas, my husband and I shared a 14-inch (all the pizzas we ordered were 14-inch ones) cheese and tomato pizza. Our daughter and son-in-law added extra garlic to theirs and our son-in-law added pepperoni to his half. The kids shared a white pizza. Now, here is why I can't go to 5 stars --- The pizza had way too much tomato sauce on it. While the sauce is tasty and delicious in its simplicity, it had the effect of bogging down the pies. Plus when the food runner brought them out to our table and served us, some sauce got on my pants and on my husband's shirt. Also, the pizza seriously needs more time in the oven as it was underdone. It lacked that char that's found on a good coal-fired oven pizza. So between the sauce and the underdone crust, it was a disappointing pie. I saw some of the photos that were put up by other Yelpers and wondered why some asked for their pizzas to be "well done". Now I know why. Yet it seems when ordering them "well done", it gets taken too far as the photos show too much char. Perhaps Uncle Patsy can give them lessons on proper baking. Yet...we all would go back again. This pizza beats any that can be found in the DC area, IMO. That said, it's my hope that the owners just tweak their recipe a bit. Also, be aware that it is cash only, so come prepared. read more

The server was great, he tried to recover for the mishap. The pizza did taste a little different. There were people sitting directly in front of the area where you pick up your food, which was a little stressful. The food here is phenomenal. The service is average. We had to ask for water twice. I ordered a chianti wine, half bottle which is $9.50. I probably would have finished the whole bottle and it was $14.50 so it would have been cheaper. Lol note to self for next time. We started off with the eggplant dish and then just got a medium cheese pizza. The table next to us, a 5 top, got their food before we did, and they were seated after us too. I was in no rush but if I was I would have been mad. We did eventually get our waters. The eggplant dish was very yummy, the bread had a hint of sweetness which I didn't like, but my guy did. The eggplant could have used some more flavoring though, I added a lot of red pepper so that helped. I feel when people/places cook with ricotta cheese they forget to season the cheese before adding it to dishes. The pizza was definitely the winner. Crust was nice and chewy. So glad it didn't have a sweet finish like the bread. The cheese definitely tasted fresh and imported. Then we asked for a box of our food. We waited and waited. We had already paid the check and we were still waiting on our box to go. Finally a bus boy came by and I asked him about it. He brought it to us. I know I eat a lot of pizza and post about it but this is by far my fav spot. I don't come here often as it isn't right around the corner but "when in Rome". The plain cheese with basil is perfect each and every time. Tomatoes drizzled on top with that gooey cheese doesn't allow me to have just one slice. Their white pie is pretty damn good too and we order it frequently as well. Sometimes white pies can get overpowered by garlic but not this one. My girls who are picky with topics and green things could care less when it comes to these pizzas. They are a friend and family fav. Inside isn't huge but I've never had to wait too long. Byo is always ideal. Love that you can see the pizza's being made and the brick oven cooking away. Staff is friendly and willing to accommodate if you need things changed up. Pretty solid pizza place I stumbled upon. It was recommended by friends in the area and I can see why. The pizza here is tasty, the ingredients are fresh and it was generally baked very well. The cheese they use here is tasty and I had no problems with their plain, mushroom, pepperoni and olive slices (we mixed and matched on our pies). I don't really have anything negative to say about this place other than that while I didn't like it more than Lombardi's in the city, it is still an excellent neighborhood pizza shop that serves above average pies. Nice place for a Saturday lunch. We got a large pie w/ extra mozzarella and mushrooms. I'll start by saying the crust was the best i've ever had, i really looked fwd to the crust. The rest of the pie was severely lacking seasoning. We didn't taste oregano or garlic. We had to add our own, some grated cheese, a bit of onion powder, some dried oregano & some crushed red pepper and it was good to go, otherwise this pizza would've sucked. We stumbled upon this stand alone pizza place years ago and went in because of the brick oven. The building looks like it was a fast food joint in a past life so the decor and ambiance is, shall we say, unique. Also, it's located next to a cemetery so take that for what it's worth. Throw in a tight parking lot and you have the basic picture. Now, on to the food. They make a Margherita style pizza, not the classic New Jersey cheese over sauce version that far out numbers this style. The sauce is flavorful and the silver dollar sized discs of fresh mozzarella tastes store made. They top the whole thing with fresh basel. The crust is medium thick - not cracker thin like Kinchleys in Ramsey and not puffy like Pizza Hut, et al. Overall, the pie is a nice break from the usual pizza in the garden state. Cash only, no slices and a long ride from our home base means we really have to be in the mood for their fare. We trek here about 3 times a year and never leave disappointed. Been here about a dozen times past 4-5 years, never have we had a bad experience or bad food. Cash only. We always get a plain pie with an anti pasta appetizer, which is plenty for 2-3 people. At this point over the last 5 years I have visited this spot twice and their edgewater location once. Overall, it's not somewhere I'd return mainly due to the service as opposed to the food which is good. Most recently I placed an order for pickup trusting that it was good food and easy since it is a service offered. Ordering on the phone was simple but the pickup was not. Upon arrival no one approached me and upon asking for help I was reluctantly told to wait for another employee. I received displeased looks from other employees even though the place wasn't busy and I was simply standing around waiting. The pizza did not come in a pizza box but simply a round cardboard inside a big paper bag. Overall, once I returned home my food was good but not good enough for the price and experience. Both options usually run pretty smooth - take out more than sit down since they do get pretty busy at times! Service is pretty okay. It's fast and easy with takeouts - sit down is alright. Nothing note worthy. They're there to serve food so I haven't had a server that was friendly. Parking is small so that could get tricky at times as well. I usually get their large pies because I want leftovers for my next meal. I've mostly had their white pizza and I mix it up with a bunch of toppings. Just HEAVENLY. They load that pie up and make sure you get your bang for your buck. The crust is flavorful and it's cooked to perfection - nice and thin. I've had their cheese and tomato as well and you really can't go wrong with their pizza options. MY ONLY COMPLAINT is that the pie goes get soggy easily so eat it QUICKLY. And like me if you want leftovers keep that in mind and be frugal with your toppings! read more

Ok so I really am stuck here. If I was basing my rating on just the food alone it would be a high 5. We got the fried mozzarella and they were amazing- its REAL mozzarella and you can taste the difference. We have come to love our tradition of ordering the antipasta, fried ravioli, and two pies - one tomato and cheese, the other a white pie. The pizza is fantastic and is obviously the main draw. It comes out piping hot and delicious and they know how to time the pizza if you're enjoying apps beforehand - always a plus for me as I hate when our table is invaded with our main dishes while still noshing on appetizers.
