As a very long time customer, these past two times have been a huge disappointment. $24 for a sandwich and fries? Customer service is failing, portion size is shrinking, and from a place that navigated Covid with some level of success. So many other options in town and counting on tourists cannot sustain you once summer is over and you've alienated locals. We all understand that the price of food is up, but balance that with great portions, excellent quality and even some resemblance of service. This is all on ownership and management. I love the food normally. The downtown location is a bit hit or miss. I had a waitress actually stick her finger in my potato and tell me she had done it to double check and told me it was hot enough. Apparently my word was not as important as hers. To boot, I couldn't get another baked potato because they ran out and I couldn't eat my "hot" potato because she stuck her finger in it, lol. I'd say the waitress was more the issue than anything because their food is normally good. I'd give them a shot but I recommend the Galveston location. The servers there are much more experienced it feels. Strongest drink I've ever been served. I ordered the Grateful Dead which is basically a Long Island, however, I'm used to them being served poorly in MN with 50% soda. This was a SPLASH of soda and 99% booze. Worth the money. I was really craving hearty bar food after a long day of hiking Crater Lake. They did not disappoint with a classic American selection, large portions, and cheesy saucy deliciousness... sorry adjectives are hard, might still be a little tipsy. The Spicy Mac N Cheese was on point, and came with a salad (so I can pretend to be healthy), and a seasoned roll. The salmon burger was prepared nicely, surprising flavor, and nummy aioli-type sauce. Brother Jon's may be my second favorite pub in the city (so far). It's a nice space, plenty of tables, easy sitting bar, no obnoxious loud music. There are a few TVs if you want to watch sports. On my first visit, they had a tennis match on, which was cool. Awesome service. Good menu, better than most pubs. - Bangers & mash, excellent. Love the spicy mustard. - Fish and chips, my go-to pub meal. Pretty decent version, not greasy, fries (chips) nicely done. Cole slaw, which I love, is a bit ordinary but still good. - Caesar salad with blackened salmon is fine. The fish wasn't really blackened but was tasty and well-cooked nonetheless. - Soft pretzel is quite soft and huge. Comes with two dips - I only used the mustard-based one. Very good. - Buffalo wings. These are not just hot wings but Buffalo wings. A small order is six large drumettes, no flats. Sauce is a Frank's/Texas Pete style with a bit of bite and it's slathered on heavily. Messy but good. Solid draft list, which is a must in this town. Highly recommended. I'll save you a seat at the bar. read more

First, the food was just lacking. The turkey melt was literally falling apart thanks to heaps of overly wet cole slaw that tasted off. The tater tots were way over done. Second, the bartender and the waitstaff were maskless. I couldnt care less about your political views on it. But if your sign on the door says you require masks, then your staff better wear them too. I've always wanted to check out Brother Jon's but always end up somewhere else for some reason. Today was my lucky day. No wait at 1:15pm. I like how open the place is with all the windows, very friendly staff. I was sooo tempted to try their Grateful Dead cocktail but being a lightweight, I went for the Huckleberry Lemonade instead. Hubby had one of their IPAs. Both were good. For our entrees, I had the fish and chips and he had the small Cobb salad. The fish and chips is one of the best I've had in town. I normally do not touch the tartar sauce but theirs was so good I even used it to dip my chips/fries. The coleslaw was on the tangy side but I liked it. The small Cobb salad was bigger than we expected. I can just imagine how big the large order is. It looked fresh with lots of good stuff in it, the hubby had no complaints. Their sandwiches and burgers looked so good, we'll have to come back again. Hopefully I'll have the courage to get the Grateful Dead then. Been here a couple of times. Always leaving totally satisfied. Beer list is up to local standards. Comfortable and casual environment with good tunes in the background. Food always tasty for kiddos and grown-ups alike. Even some good options for my fellow vegetarians. Service has been great. But based on follow up visits, management needs to consider working on consistency in food coming out of the kitchen for quality. They also might work on service consistency too. Service is always very friendly, but service delays may be due to too large a volume of customers to keep up at current staffing levels. Or training. Regardless, it is fixable. The problems are not with the people, attitudes are great, the problems seem to be with the process. So are the kitchen issues fixable. . When food is not as described on menu or delivered at different times to diners at the same table or poorly plated or served cold when it should be hot or poorly prepared, it is time for management to look at the size of the menu, the training in the kitchen and all the rest. I still like Brother John's Alehouse. I also appreciate that the nice guys who own and manage both Brother Jon's Alehouse and Brother Jon's Public House may be struggling to find enough time to keep up with the popularity of both, in particular in high tourist months when Bend's dining population explodes. The Alehouse is still an AOK dining option in downtown Bend. But in keeping it real for Yelp, there is some wood to chop here to get into four star category again in my opinion. The boyfriend and I decided to venture out to one of his favorite bar/restaurants after being quarantined a few months. We expected the social distance regulations to cause a bit of a wait time and were told to stand outside for 15-20 minutes and they would call us. It was super cold and windy but we were hungry and ready for some cocktails. After about 25 minutes, I decided to check with the hostess and see what the wait time was looking like. I believe it was the manager on duty that stepped in and said "oh, we were just about to call you. There's an older group of people behind you and we were wondering if you could possibly let them go in front of you. The table coming up is a low table and they would be more comfortable with that. Do you guys mind waiting another 15 minutes?" I believe I'm a fairly nice person and I realized it would be super uncomfortable for the older group to sit at the high top, so I said sure. Just a best practice in that situation would be for the manager to offer an app. or a drink on the house for the inconvenience. We were standing outside in the cold and it was windy. I'm never one for free handouts but I personally would have offered something for our nice gesture. Also, keep the face mask on at all times. The manager kept pulling her mask down to talk to everyone and that pretty much defeats the purpose. Hate to call anyone out but some may find it isn't a best practice, especially in the food and bev industry. read more

We have been to this place a few times, and we have never had bad service until tonight. We came in and were seated right away, and given water right away. Then radio silence for 15 minutes. No drinks or any wait staff to tell us it'll will be a minute. 15 minutes later someone was seated right next to us and greeted, and then a waitress came right up to them in less than a minute. I have never seen a place do something like that. They need to work on their service. We got up and left. We went outside to our car parked right outside the door to make an order to go and actually is going to take a shorter amount of time getting that order than it would've if we were just sit there and wait for someone to finally come help us. We weren't even given a chance to order drinks. And then add an extra 20 minutes of waiting on top of what they tell you to get your to go food. When we went back inside to get the to go food, the hostess didn't even recognize that we were just there. The people that were seated after us had to go boxes on their table already and we still waited another 10 to 15 minutes to get our food. This was a horrible experience at this place. read more

Busy spot with limited seating but worth a stop. The venue looks like a historic throw back using exposed brick and old local pictures. There's tv for sports watching, a full bar and lots of beer on tap. It was fairly loud while we were there with patrons having to talk loudly over the blaring music but no one seemed irritated by it (and it was a great mix so we didn't either). This would be my only criticism if I had to have one: not a place for a quiet, sit down, romantic meal. But I don't think that's the crowd their catering to anyway. We tried a prime rib special and a burger. Food presentation is great and service was incredible. Staff were all very friendly and seemed to really enjoy the customers (Well done!). read more

In a world filled with small cheeseburgers and pathetic fries, Brother John's delivers a DOUBLE cheeseburger, and a side of hearty, potato-licious fries that are generously salted and flavorful. I have been to this location on several occasions, and I always leave happy. I get good service (sometimes a little slow, but friendly;) I get good food; good wine or beer; and usually good people-watching (sitting in or out.) I often feel like BJ's knows what you're in the mood for - the other day we rolled into Bend late from being in Hood River. My sister wanted a steak, and what do you know? There was a nice juicy steak on the specials list. This isn't the first time that that happened either. The nice thing is, when BJ's isn't reading your mind you can rely on their solid staples. Good salads, good sandwiches, good wine and beer selection. Parking downtown can be annoying at times, but when you're worried about that, try the other location. I wanted to ask for the ingredients because it was a weird flavorless grey substance with no artichokes and random pieces of spinach. With oven cooked cheese burnt on the top.
