I used to love this coffee shop, a great black business in the neighborhood but recently I was kicked out of the restaurant for having my laptop out. I didn't see the no laptop sign so when I asked to close it I had a brief conversation with the owner and asked if I could simply read my book instead in which I was abruptly told no. Despite being a paying customer bc I was done dining in her opinion I was disrespectfully scolded in front of other patrons and made to leave. We came here for the Mac and Cheese but they no longer carry Mac and Cheese and I found that the menu lacked interesting choices. Not a good start... I ended up getting the onion, tomato and cheddar omlet which was acceptable, but not special; the nicely dressed salad helped it a little. My daughter got the lox and cream cheese multi grain toast and it was good; more enjoyable than the omlet, but too small of a portion to feel like a real breakfast. Maybe if they added some fruit to the dish? Even if it's a dollar or 2 extra, it'll be more satisfying. One bad point in my visit was when I was ready to leave. I ordered an iced tea to go which they promptly served, but I paid the drink with cash and they happened to be counting the register, and they legit took like 15 mins to give me the change! Im like can't she just give me my $7 and keep counting?? Smh However overall the staff was really nice and the ambiance had a relaxed vibe, there was 90's r&b playing at a conversational volume with bench style seating and a beautiful outdoor area in the back. This may very well be my favorite place to have breakfast in NYC if not the entire world. The southern style biscuits taste like my best childhood memories and are a tasty, textural vehicle for a BEC. The breakfast sandwiches are beyond good, they are transcendent. I also can't say enough good things about the lattes. The matcha lattes are just delicious, a perfect balance of sweet and earthy. Each fall I happily spend a small fortune on their PSLs which is easily miles better than the Starbucks PSL. It gets pretty busy on weekends but the staff is no less attentive when the shop is full. I'll also note I've had an easier time ordering ahead on DoorDash rather than through their website. I always prefer to order directly from a store, especially since it's cheaper, but have had issues with my order not coming up for them when I place my order directly. read more

I came in the morning which was pretty quiet (around 7:45am). The staff was prepping the pastries for display and another staff was cleaning and setting up. They were very nice and offered to help with my selection. I was stumped between the avocado toast or the quinoa bowl. I opted for the avocado toast with an egg addition after much thought. I received my breakfast quickly (well I was the only one there) but it was nice to chat it up with the staff while I waited. The avocado toast consisted of four triangle slices of multigrain bread. It was delicious! My favorite part of the meal was the tomato herb jam. The taste was distinctively tasteful. It was actually sweet with a small hint of tomato but the blend with the avocado was a nice creation. I realized I didn't need the egg (but I ate it of course) since avocado is already fulfilling. My only and single gripe was the price. It was 18 dollars which I found steep. The environment is somewhat spacious; there is a few communal tables posted in the front and one in the back of the cafe along with seating at the counter. Loveddd. We ordered from here on a lazy Sunday morning and it was so worth it. We ordered the waffles with bacon, the jerk sausage biscuit with egg and the BLT biscuit with egg. The waffles are so good, it has a nice cinnamon flavor and was so fluffy. My husband described the bacon as melt in your mouth ! Ordered the Chicken Sandwich Biscuit and a hot peppermint tea and sat out in the breeze on the sidewalk to enjoy it. The chicken and biscuit were both fantastic. Delicious, buttery, flaky biscuit. After a day of missing trains and buses, the relative New York nightmares, I found my way over to brown butter and then felt that this was in a sort of way fated. I wanted for some time to check them out, but as I'm now seldom in that area before 5 p.m., I never get to go. Hungry as ever, my way in. Brown Butter is turning out to be one of my new regular spots. I absolutely LOVE the Golden Chai and find myself getting at least 2 during every visit. On another occasion I had the porridge and today I had the Açaí bowl, which prompted this review. The Golden Chai is $6 without tax and my Açaí bowl was $11. I was initially surprised by the costly bowl but gave them the benefit of the doubt that it would be simply amazing and much better than any $8/9 Açaí bowl I've ever had. I was quite disappointed but more hungry than anything (there was no soup available today). Not only was the bowl seriously lacking in flavor, texture, and ingredients but it was overall bad AND the size was tiny. The bowls I've had, and I've had plenty - are full of goodness and the Açaí is usually blended and thick. This Açaí was the texture of somewhat warm coconut or almond yogurt with a few pieces of fruit and coconut. Yea, I'm seriously disappointed, but I ate it since I'm doing a healthy diet this week. The reason for the 4 stars and not lower is that I am in love with the very expensive Golden Chai, the space is conducive to getting work done, and the customer service is always great. My first time here, and I love it already. Very spacious, staff is friendly, and the seats are comfortable (table is big enough for my giant textbook, which is a bonus). I came in here to get Brunch with my boyfriend on a Tuesday. The place was pretty empty and they had these passive aggressive signs on the table that say how many people can sit there. (Super rude and lazy. I've worked in hospitality for years. That's not cute) We sat down at a corner table for 3. The place literally had three customers so I was not concerned. The waitress comes over and says "I like how you decided to sit there even though the sign says its for three people." I looked up in disbelief at her snarky attitude. My boyfriend kept it light and said, "yes but when the place is empty I'm sure its not a big deal" and she said "how are you going to tell me where its okay for you to sit" She was smiling, but I don't know you for you to assume that this banter is familiar or appropriate. We walked into a restaurant and despite wether or not you disprove of my seating selection or not, I don't need your smart ass remarks about it and your rude way of managing your dining room. I said to my boyfriend, "Were leaving I don't like her energy, and I don't want her serving me food." And he said "oh no its okay, calm down." I said "not its not. I didn't come in here for this." I was craving a breakfast biscuit sandwich last Sunday afternoon and decided to check out Brown Butter as they have been active on Tompkins for a few months and I had yet to visit. You order at the counter and then receive a table number, and your order will be brought to your table. First off, there should be someone busing tables and clearing leftover plates and cups--many open seats had dirty dishes and cups hanging out in front of them. It was pretty busy, considering it was a Sunday, but something that should be factored in. I had no complaints about the biscuit, which really hit the spot and was just as flaky and buttery as I hoped. Review Breakdown: Food: 4/5 Service: 1.5/5 (I'll throw in .5 ... you'll see why) When you walk in, it's actually a little confusing as to what is going on. I understand that it's a Cafe but on a busy Sunday, I would've expected that they would extend their "no laptops" rule to the front. It is a little overwhelming when you walk in as you expect no seats. We found a little table and took an extra chair for 3 of us, and then asked a nice girl if she wouldn't mind switching with us as she was seated 1 to a 4-top. So that was definitely more comfortable. No one speaks to you when you come in, and no one explains where anything is located, you just have to figure it out. We had to ask to have both tables wiped down and cleared. We got up an ordered a Quinoa/Oatmeal Bowl, 2 Avocado Toasts, an Omelette (they do not have gluten free anything so don't ask otherwise they'll roll their eyes at you, also don't ask if you can add anything to the omelette. That will incur another eyeroll) with a "side of bacon," a Peppermint Tea, and 2 of the Sorrel Mimosas they had on special. The peppermint tea they basically threw at us at the counter had the tea bag thrown in, stem and all (the little part where the paper is supposed to be) and the two Sorrel Mimosas arrived with the syrup on the bottom, ice , and sorrel leaves that had holes in them... (yummmm caterpillar residue). The food arrived very pretty and the Chef was an incredibly nice guy. We enjoyed our meal and was actually talking about how cool the concept was when I decided to close the meal with the Golden Chai as I've always wanted to have a turmeric latte. We should've learned our lesson. We should've just gone home. I returned to the counter and the other gentleman who was helping out at the counter and in the "dining room" was at the register. He said they didn't have Chai mix so I asked instead if I could have the Golden Latte with cinnamon and whipped cream to substitute (the Golden Chai is already a $1 more than the Latte so obviously I wouldn't mind the price difference). He said the whipped cream was usually for the waffle but he didn't mind checking to see if we could have some for my latte. While he was in the back a woman who calls herself the "barista" came over and legit asked "What do you want?" Ignoring her 'tude I said I was waiting to see if I could have whipped cream on my golden lattes. She said "You can't do that." First of all, WHAT RESPECTABLE COFFEE PLACE DOESN'T OFFER WHIPPED CREAM FOR TOPPING? Anyways, as she's saying this the guy comes back with the whipped cream and says it's fine. She looks mad and says "I'm not gonna charge you this time but if you come back you're gonna have to pay extra." I said Okay. Clearly if I have enough disposable income to pay between $5-$6 each for lattes I WONT CARE ABOUT .50 EXTRA FOR SOMETHING I REALLY WANT??! I go back to the table to wait for the lattes. I don't tell my family about her attitude or the price, just that they don't have Chai today. She brings the lattes to the table and again says sharply, "Just to let you know! I'm not gonna charge you this time but if you come back you're gonna have to pay extra." How embarrassing! My family found her to be extremely rude and even challenged her on whether she was the owner and if she found it acceptable to be kind to the people next to us (who had their teabag properly served AND brought to the table), and rude to us our entire time there. On the way out I said thank you to the other guy for going above and beyond for service and he gave me a little wink and a smile. +1/2 star in service. Overall, decent food. But, if a place doesn't have good service it's not worth it to me, and it shouldn't be to you. Good food places are plenty in Bed-Stuy. You return to a place for the experience.
