I got the whole Italian hoagie for $20. It's stuffed with layers of meat, a fistful of arugula, and topped with the cheese. The bread itself is a bit on the harder side... not rock hard but like hard chewy. The meat, cheese, arugula, and sauces/garnishes do complement each other well and it tastes good. But it just doesn't taste like a $20 sandwich. The price doesn't fit the size and flavor profile. At $20 for a footlong sandwich I'm expecting something amazing. If I were craving a good quality sandwich, then sure I would come back, but most likely not. I wish I found this place pre-COVID as I would have loved to dine in this cute quirky establishment. The woman who rang up the take out order who I believe might be the owner was very lovely and patient as it was my first time here. I couldn't decide on one sandwich and the city street parking situation was a nightmare at 11am on a Friday (the only reason it will be a while before I come back) so had to order half of a Hebrew Hammer and half of Bub's Italian Hoagie. The order came out within 10 minutes. It was just enough time for me to admire the decor on one wall. The two sandwiches with opposite flavors and texture created a nice balance for one meal. The Italian hoagie had loads of savory and tangy flavor because of the variety of salami, amazing provolone, hoagie relish, and vinaigrette. When I wanted a break from the sharp flavor explosion, I switched over to the Hebrew Hammer that was loaded with meat (double meat not necessary - it probably won't fit, these subs are loaded!) and a creamy cole slaw with a nice kick from the spicy mustard. I visited Bub and Pos's twice while visiting DC. I had the Philly Special and the Hebrew Hammer. Both were really good. I had never had a sandwich, such as the Philly Special. I was supposed to go to D'Nics in Philly the day before on Memorial Day, but they were closed. The Philly Special was a great to try. WOw...I heard lots of great things about this place all over the internet. I visit DC on business a few times a year but never had the chance to try this place out. I finally was able to go on my recent trip on a Tuesday night. I arrived at around 5 PM. The staff at the time, one young girl taking the orders and another guy in the back making the sandwiches were very nice. There are a bunch of tables seating 2-6 people as well as a 5-person countertop toward the front of the place. As you approach the ordering counter there is a wall to the right which shows you the sandwiches that are available and what is sold out. Though I had my heart set on the "Hebrew Hammer", they were sold out of that at the time, so I opted for the Brisket sandwich. All half sandwiches are around $10 and the full is around $18. The sandwiches are very big so a half should be enough to fill most people. They also had a few fountain drinks including a bunch of beer. I was lucky enough to go during their happy hours which offered some $3 beers. I ordered my food and grabbed a beer and took a seat toward the countertop in the front. Just off to the left of the ordering counter is a station with utensils and various condiments including hot peppers, sweet peppers, onions and other fixins'. After about 10 minutes, the guy who was making sandwiches in the back brought out my sandwich. I dug right in...and it was great. Brisket was juicy and tender. I really enjoyed the sandwich and I hope to return again when I am in DC to try a few of their other creations. All of them sound great. FYI, while i was there, someone ordered and attempted their sandwich challenge; a massive ?? pound, $50 sandwich surrounded by lots of potato chips that has to be completed in 15 minutes. Apparently, completing it, get you the sandwich for free and a spot on their Wall of Fame. Though, I didn't stick around long enough to see whether he finished it or not, it was entertaining to see him dive in the first few bites while the restaurant's timer played some inspirational music. Legit one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! This hole in the wall sandwich shop is an absolute must have. Ms. Wagner is so friendly and greeted us as soon as we walked in. She told me about all their vegetarian sandwich options and helped me pick what to order. I got the Bulgarian Feta and had it toasted and it was out of this world! I got the half size which was perfect and I was legitimately sad when my sandwich was over. My boyfriend got the Bubs Italian Hoagie (the full size) and said it was delicious. I ordered the brisket sub to go. I work about a 15 minute walk away. By the time I got to my desk to enjoy my spoils, the bread around the brisket had dissolved pretty much into paste. I really wanted to love Bub and Pop's, but I don't know if I'll chance returning. Other than the sogginess of the bread, I prefer my sandwiches to have more fresh components to cut the richness of the meat. The brisket sandwich comes with a kind of slaw but not nearly enough of it. Maybe Bub and Pop's sandwiches are better when enjoyed in the restaurant. I wouldn't recommend grabbing one of their sandwiches to go. On a more positive note, if you like slightly overdone potato chips, like I do, Bub and Pop's has you covered. OK, this place is good, don't get me wrong, but my brother and I did not have the transcendent experience the reviews led me to expect. I got the Philly Special (roast pork etc) and brother got the roasted turkey hoagie. Mine had all the correct ingredients, and tasted fine. It would not, however, make anyone think of DiNic's or John's. But good enough for DC esp since Taylor Gourmet killed the Pattison Avenue. Brother's sandwich had a ton of meat (he got double meat), but turkey didn't fully meet his expectations of thick slices of fresh-carved turkey like you'd get on Thansgiving. More like shaved turkey. If I worked closer I'd visit more often but it's a mile each way for me and there are plenty of places in between. A wonderful little find after touring the Renwick gallery! We made a bit of a trek and it was well worth it. This was a small operation, but quality and family owned and operated. All the employees were super friendly and seemed to enjoy being there which really added to the already welcoming atmosphere. On top of that, despite arriving late in the day we were still able to get our first choices on sandwiches although some of their selection was gone (including the chips!) When our orders arrived everyone was happy and pleased with portions and taste. I had the chicken parm half and after talking to the head chef there I was glad to hear we were on the same page on how a proper parm is breaded and fried. The pesto on top was also great. I've been coming to Bub and Pop's since they first opened in DC and used to LOVE their sandwiches. My go-to was their Italian because it focuses on great quality meats and their use of homemade italian dressing and arugula instead of the standard shredded iceberg and a balsamic drizzle - which I requested myself - really made it something different. I used to eat it at least a couple times a week when I worked downtown. I ordered it again for the first time in a long time and was severely disappointed. The meats were great as always but instead of the arugula there was shredded iceberg and the addition of the raw onions really did nothing for it other than come off as commercial and nothing special. The italian dressing tastes store bought instead of the homemade one they used to use. Everything that separated this italian from any other sub shop is no longer on this sandwich and I'm disappointed to have spent $12 for a half. read more

Was in Dupont Circle last week so I decided to try this place as it appears this is one of only 2 places in the DMV that serves a true Philly style roast pork sandwich (Grazie Grazie being the other). So I ordered two sandwiches - the Italian hoagie and the Philly Special which is their roast pork sandwich. I was really looking forward to the roast pork sandwich as it's my favorite. Wow sooo disappointed. The pork sandwich was so wet and greasy AF. It was as if they dipped the entire sandwich in a pot of oil it was that saturated in grease. I still ate it though but with a fork and out of a bowl. The Italian hoagie was good and is the only reason I didn't give only 1 star. read more

Overall, it's unique (this is no boring Subway or Quiznos) and is good quality. Not sure that justifies the price. I've been here twice now. First and last time coming here. Got confused thinking that the French onion dip comes with chips. And the woman literally sounded like she was going to attack me. She was SO aggressive and probably the most rude person I've ever encountered in all of DC/MD/VA. All I did was talk to her about misunderstanding the menu by thinking chips came with dip. I didn't make a fuss, or complain at all -- but she literally tore into me. You verbally abuse your customers like this? I'm so disgusted. People like this have been hurt in life and turn out as adults who try to hurt everyone else around them, too. It's people like this who make me pessimistic about the state of our world. Will never, ever come back. Also, I took all the shrimp out of my sandwich because it didn't taste fresh or good quality. The small plastic cup of French onion dip is $4.75 because it's made in house. It's alright, but too pricey. I paid $19 for half of a sandwich and a small cup of dip. Sub was mad small. So disappointed despite shining reviews. When I tried to order the chips so I can have it with the dip, she agreed to put it back on the menu because they had 1 left. But she said "if someone buys it before you o have to give it to them" while I was the only one ordering in the restaurant. She said this while I was on the app trying to buy the chips. I was walking around DuPont and my friends wanted to try some sandwiches so we decided to try here. I must constantly walk past this place but decided finally to try it. Frankly it was really incredible. Walking in for me felt like I was going home. When talking to the Mom I felt like I should be calling her Mrs. Walker, because she reminded me of the women who I went to synagogue with. Seriously she was awesome: sweet, attentive to customers, and running a very tight ship. Then the food was incredible. The portions are pretty significant. I had a fish hoagie which was delicious. There were two huge pieces and some great hot sauce. I found the best way to eat it was to have one piece first then have the rest of the sandwich. Really delicious.
