Buckley's is always a classic and elegant option for dining and I've never been disappointed in either the food or the staff! Everything from the minute you sit down is efficient, enjoyable, and cozy. The pajama brunch is fun and tasty and is a great way to enjoy good food with the family. I've suggested Buckley's multiple times to my guests who take my tours at Winterthur and they're always pleased. The menu is extensive but not overwhelming. Every dish is prepared and seasoned perfectly and the desserts are always the cherry on top. We had lunch there today and the service far exceeded expectations. Our waitress, Charlotte, was kind, friendly, and informative. We discussed having our upcoming rehearsal dinner and she answered all our questions and didn't hesitate to show us the venue space for special events. Great atmosphere -- good bar -- good drinks -- good vibe. This place is cozy and nicer than your average pub. It's in a posh neighborhood on the PA/DE line, but doesn't feel snobby. Service was prompt. You couldn't sit in the dining room till after 5p though, but nothing wrong w/ the pub part. We had the crab/artichoke dip -- came out on little flatbread type pieces, delicious, albeit it a little greasy. The shortribs melted in my mouth, and the Caesar salad was also delicious. My mom & Aunt each had the French onion soup -- and were horrified it cost $9 My mom said it tasted the same as $4.99 French Onion soup, ha. My mom had the Margherita pizza ... it wasn't made the traditional way, it was heavy on the cheese, and had sauce, instead of fresh tomato chunks. It was also EXTREMELY greasy..so I'd avoid the pizza. Would like to try the half-price brunch on Sunday...if I ever get up early enough. read more

This is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. First thing was our waiter had his thumb wrapped around the rim of my drink and his thumb was inside the glass when he served it to me. Had the artichoke spinach dip and almost choke on a medal twisty tie and immediately left. My friend also had a steak and was still completely raw. Since moving to the area we've put this restaurant in our regular rotation and have generally had good service experiences with decent food. We end up there 2-3 times a month. Last night however I ordered the salmon and was unable to eat it because of how it tasted and smelled. I have eaten salmon twice at other local restaurants in the last week - always consistently good... but something was clearly wrong with this fish. I ate the asparagus and part of the other side because I was starving and by the time the waitress checked in I had eaten the other half of my wife's French dip. I told her about the fish and she brought us the bill (which included the bad fish), we paid it and left. It was a disappointing experience. The last time we were there I ordered the nachos with chicken. The nachos came but no chicken so she brought me a small plate of what looked like boiled chicken to put on the nachos which I thought was an odd way to handle the mistake. I ate the chips that had toppings on them (leas than half the chips) and when the waitress came back and saw the plate full of chips with nothing on them she suggested I order them with "half chips" specified next time to correct the imbalance of chips to toppings. I was going to suggest that they just add more toppings to cover all the chips but I decided to just pay the bill and go. It's unfortunate because the place has potential, it's in a good location and other times we've been have been generally good experiences. read more

Tl;Dr Great food and drinks, reasonable prices, great atmosphere, ask for MARIAH, best server! Discovered this place today and went in to try it with my sister and mother who is in town. We didn't have a reservation, but we only had to wait about ten minutes. Cloth napkins, nice silverware, brought water out right away. Very nice little place, lots of beer and wine to pick from, delicious menu, all at reasonable prices. Our server was MARIAH, 10/10 would recommend, definitely ask for her! She was bubbly, fun, helpful, attentive, energetic, friendly...You name it, one of the best servers I've ever had. I had to go compliment her manager, she was so terrific. Drinks never got low, dirty dishes never piled up, I never felt like I needed something and had to wait for her to come around to order. Let me put it this way: I didn't pay for dinner, yet I still tipped her extra because she 110% deserved it. Anyway, I ordered the Buckley Burger with sweet potato fries, and had devoured it before anyone else had even finished half their plate it was so good! We were also able to try a dessert that had a brownie and vanilla ice cream, pretty sure it said the ice cream was from Woodside! Very delicious. I've passed this place so many times over the years, but until today had never stopped in. AS attractive as the place from outside, it has even more charm inside! Did not have reservations for lunch, but that didn't seem to be a problem on this Thursday afternoon. We were seated immediately and our server took our drink orders within seconds! Throughout the meal, the service was first rate! Our meals were delivered as quickly as anyplace I've ever been. My wife ordered a poached pear salad and a cup of mushroom soup. The pear salad was so delicious she wouldn't be happy until I tried it! I'm glad I did - a perfect salad. I didn't try the mushroom soup, but, while not the best she has had, she still thought it was pretty good. I guess in the heart of mushroom country it's hard to be the best. I ordered the Chicken Pot Pie. The crust was just the way I like it, it had to be broken apart with a rap from my spoon. The gravy base was thick and delicious with just the right amount of fresh herbs. The all white meat chicken, while very, very abundant, was a little chewy and the potatoes were slightly underdone. She chose this place because it serves food rather late. We walked in at 9:30 PM and grabbed a table near the fireplace! So warm and cozy!! The Marco Real Tempranillo was a fabulous wine! So smooth and velvety. Loved it! My friend had the Malbec, which she loved. As for food, I ordered the Mustard Crusted Chicken Sandwich with a side of horseradish mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were disappointing as there was little to no horseradish flavor. The mustard crusted chicken breast was really good, the dilled havarti was little to none (I would have preferred more on the sandwich as I am not sure it was even on there), obviously you can't go wrong with the bacon!!, and the sherry mayonnaise was fabulous!! The menu was sparse and featured some very basic selections. I got the fried mac and cheese for an appetizer, which was crispy on the outside and perfectly mac-and-cheesy on the inside. It came with a fruity sauce which paired well with the dish. For my entree, I got the curry chicken salad sandwich, which was standard. The food was average - not too shabby, but not amazing. The portions were large so you'll definitely be full. Service was friendly as well! The prices are a little too high as the food doesn't warrant it. Went for the PJ brunch yesterday and had an AWFUL experience! First, my mimosa was room temperature. Then, our meals were served without cutlery or napkins. My entree, the crab eggs benedict, was served cold. After sending it back, I received my entree again and the eggs were completely overdone. The crab, which supposed to be lump crab meat, was tiny bits and pieces, like it came out of a can. My companion's entree was supposed to be served with a spicy tomato salsa. It came with pico de gallo. The ONLY redeeming factor in our brunch was that our server was fantastic and very attentive. They also removed both of my favorite soups from the menu, both of which were listed on their online menu. I'm glad we got the "PJ discount" because it was an utter disappointment and I will not be back. read more

I really want to love Buckley's. It is in a great location and a historic space; I have been here many times over the years. The bar usually seems to work out, but the restaurant is not great. Two of the past four times I have sat down to eat, they have gotten the order wrong for someone in the party. And both times they were painfully slow and disorganized in resolving it with a correction. The servers seem so inexperienced, not great at being attentive and the food is average. In fact, last time I was here I noticed the table next to me had gotten their order wrong and it took so long to get a corrected entrée that they just took it to-go for one in the party. (shouldn't there be a way to rush an incorrect entrée order) The Sunday brunch is popular, but I always feel shortchanged when I get it. .....it is $18.50 and the sides (like bacon) are served family style - getting french toast and shared sides for that price is a little rough especially if you add in a bloody mary. Anyway, the bar area could be a low 4 but the restaurant experience is a 3. Bottom line is that they tried to reinvent the place a few years ago and I had high hopes, but it is best as a well located bar and mediocre restaurant. read more

This was recommended to us by the staff at Winterthur but was a disappointing experience. It did not take long to seat our group of 6 but the food took far too long and was hit and miss. My Reuben sandwich was a disappointment. Maybe two slices of meat and an overall greasy mess. The French dip looked good, but came with what amounted to a shot glass of au jus. The burgers looked decent but were way undercooked. The quiche was ok. Repeated requests for drink refills went unmet. The din of the bar requires us to shout to each other. Food was amazing tonight. The atmosphere is great. Our waiter, Paul was extremely tentative and catered to my gluten allergy needs. Their gluten free bread is one of the best I've had for going out to eat. I was able to get french onion soup with bread for the first time in forever. And being able to dip my gluten free bread into the mussels white sauce was to die for (haven't been able to do that in a long time too!). If you go here and are into islandy drinks I highly recommend their painkiller. It was delish. The food didn't wow me as much. I had the pan seared halibut special($26). It's very mediocre....which at this price point makes it bad. I had chicken pot pie the chicken was odd rubbery perfect cubes (processed chicken not fresh). I was a few minutes late (like five minutes) the hostess had forgotten where she sat them so I had to wander the whole restaurant searching for them. My dessert, coconut cream cake, did not seem like anything made in-house. For the price point they charge (20-30 dollars for entrees $8 for dessert) I would expect something that's not fresh out of a box....clearly my main course and dessert was just that. read more

My wife and I stopped in on the way to a Longwood Gardens Nightscape show, and we were instant fans. The dining room and bar were full, so we decided to hang out for the 30 minute wait. To our surprise the upstairs opened up, and we went up and enjoyed hanging out with and meeting Paul. Very attentive, professional, and friendly, he was also proud to be a part of the Buckley's team. I had always heard great things about Chef Tom, (I have a background in this area of business), and although we only had a few appetizers, I can see why the reputation is there - with the mix/variety of menu choices, the quality of the ingredients, and the excellently prepared products. Their food is consistently delicious, and their servers are friendly and knowledgeable. You can also order a bottle of wine from the local wine shop next door (Collier's) and have it delivered to enjoy with your meal for a small corkage fee. I've been going to Buckley's Tavern for about 15 years, not regularly, but enough. Today was the worst. Food handlers touching their hair and serving food. Food handlers eating food in the kitchen area and not washing hands after and serving food. Also the amount of flies and fly vomit on the fixtures was nauseating. They need to make sure they fix this fly issue. Drain cleaning. Keeping delivery doors shut would be a start. Not going back there anytime soon. read more

I checked back in 50 minutes later only to be told that there was no telling how much longer it would be. Maybe there should be a "reservations only" policy. I have since changed my opinion on Buckley's, I spoke to manager and requested they extend their Ha Hr from 3-6 to 4-7 like most places, since the working people of America, usually cannot make it there until around 6pm, so they miss out on the discounted alcoholic beverages, and STILL no discount on ANY appetizers at all, not condusive to good customer service, and I cannot get my Ha Hr people to come back to Buckley's for that reason, maybe they just want to cater to the leisurely group?! Our group was taking a tour of Nemours and the docent recommended this place and we were so glad he did. The service was great. We sat in the bar area and it was very homey and comfortable. Cozy bar, decent food but the worst service. My husband and I have given this spot a chance on several occasions and today will be our last. The weekend afternoon bartender is (brown bob haircut with bangs) so unpleasant. I don't need an actor behind the bar when I'm out but I don't think expecting a bartender to say hello and crack a smile is too much to ask. Instead, every time we've been here we sit for 10-20 minutes waiting to be acknowledged and have to flag the grouch down for a refill. Total BS. We tip well and we are easy going customers. Disappointment all the way around. This was our first trip back to Buckley's after being closed for "renovation", and it certainly failed to impress. The hostess who greeted us with a 'hey' said that the wait for three people would be around an hour-- not a huge surprise as it was a Saturday night, so we headed into the bar for a drink. The layout was similar to its prior state but felt brighter and more open. There were four bartenders for a bar that could reasonably have been staffed by two, but together they were doing the work of about one. I waited a bit for a menu while they chatted with each other, looked over the mediocre selection of beers, and then came back to the bar to order. Again they stood around talking, even after making eye contact with the woman whom had brought me the menu, until a bartender from the other side walked over and took the order. The people in front of me sat there with empty glasses and no one even looked at them. Just before my drinks showed up the original bartender-- the one that brought me the menu and then made eye contact but just looked away, came over and stood in front of me and said 'yeah?'. I said 'its taken care of", at which point she just walked away. We were seated a few minutes later. A nice surprise, given that we were prepared for the long haul, but how can your seating estimate be off by 45 minutes? The same thing had been told to the couple that came in right after us, and then they were seated immediately (before us, for some reason). Our table was in the back room, which looked essentially identical to our last visit two years ago. T he waitress was ok, but disappeared for long stretches. We ordered the cheese and charcuterie plate as an appetizer. This was brought out by what appeared to be an eighth-grader. He moved the candle, put the plate down, and walked away. The plate contained: three unidentified pieces of cheese, a splotch of honey, and some over-ripe grapes. It was comical at best. We just sort of looked at it for a bit, and when the waitress showed up again, we asked her which part was the 'charcuterie'. She rolled her eyes and said something about the people in the back, and took it away. It showed up again in a few minutes. This time it was brought out by another person whose parents must have dropped him off after school because there is no way he was old enough to drive. Again, the plate was wordlessly placed on the table. Just out of curiosity, I inquired about the types of cheese on the plate: "can you tell me what these are?". He looked kind of bewildered and annoyed, then said 'its cheese'. Those were his exact words. Its pretty funny as I think back on it, but seriously? What a joke. The plate itself was identical except now there were a few pieces of deli meat folded over off to the side. Sure enough, when we ate it, the kid proved to be right: it was cheese. My wife ordered soup and a salad. The soup never showed, and the salad was ok. My friend had the burger which he said was fine. I had the ham sandwich which was about a 5/10, and fries that were about the same. Dessert was some sort of cake that warrants no more comment, and pumpkin whoopee pies that were fairly decent. In general the portions were small and over-priced. We were pretty excited for the return of a restaurant that used to be excellent. Sadly everything about this place has failed to recover from the long closure, and I suspect another closure, perhaps for good, is deservedly coming soon. read more
