Hmm I swear I reviewed this place before... Anyways, this place is gorgeous, but the food is way overpriced for what you're getting. The presentation is lovely, but the food is just mediocre. We had the pork dumplings, chow fun, fried rice and some meat. It looked great, but was just ok. The drinks were pretty and tasty, though. read more

So so worth it. Even though it's expensive I would definitely go back. We had a 9:30pm reservation on a Sunday (make sure to get a reservation otherwise you'll be waiting a while). We got there a bit early so were seated by the bar area where we could order cocktails and appetizers. The rock shrimp was just fantastic. You can actually sit at those tables and have an entire meal if you don't have a reservation. It's nice that you can eat while you wait for your table. You pay separately for whatever you eat in the bar area. Once seated, we ordered pork dumplings in the chili soy broth (awesome!), broken chili chicken, vegetable rice and Singapore chili crab. The crab was just okay. Chicken and rice were delicious. Do not leave without getting dessert! The crying chocolate and almond bread pudding were almost too good to be true. When I go back I would probably just go for drinks, appetizer and dessert. read more

First time at Buddakan NYC and I was thoroughly impressed. Everything from the interior design to the food was exceptional. Our server did an amazing job making sure we were accommodated. We ordered the oxtail dumplings, sweet & crispy jumbo shrimp, lobster fried rice and we finished everything with the crying chocolate dessert. We were definitely pleased and I can say I will be back again. read more

So I am looking through my yelp reviews today and realized I never wrote a review for this place! I have been here twice since moving to New York. Whoops. Anyway this is one of the first spots that comes up when you search trendy restaurant in NYC. I first came here with my dad when he was visiting because he is a big fan of high end asian fusian food. When you first walk in the restaurant is beautiful. You can tell this is a sort of scene-y spot in meatpacking. The ambiance is fun and a bit loud, which my dad does not like. Sorry dad. We were seated downstairs but made sure to pause for a nice picture on the staircase overlooking the dining room. Now onto the food. When my dad and I go out to dinner we like to order more than we can actually eat but this time I think we did pretty good. We ordered the lobster egg rolls to start. They were fried to perfection and nice and crispy. They steamed just slightly when you bit into them to find the tender delicious lobster. YUM. Just order them they are so good. And we got the chili rock shrimp which was also amazing. Now onto the main course. We ordered the jumbo shrimp, the black pepper beef, and lobster fried rice which was equally delicious. We were clearly in the mood for lobster. Everything was very delicious and we were STUFFED by the time we left. The food was great and my dad was a happy camper. I did good. The decor of this place seems a bit dated. Probably not as glamorous as it was when it just opened and since it seems to be a major draw for the crowds, they could think of refreshing it. But the food is divine and extremely fairly priced. Tuna Tartare comes bedded on deviled eggs with the stripe of spicy mayo. In spite of the abundance of rich flavors, this dish still tasted mighty fresh. Their deservedly most popular dish-edamame dumplings-is something you'll dream of for days to come. I still haven't stopped. Fois gras and oysters are supremely rich in flavor, but nicely balanced by accompanying seaweed. Alaskan cod and charred beef fillet were great, but not as spectacular as appetizers. Crying chocolate is certainly to cry for! Classic and pure. We had off-menu cocktails and they were amazing. Hats off to great bartenders in all rooms! Our waiter was professional and extremely attentive. Hands down-5 stars for this classic downtown gem. read more

Once you look past the pretentious decor, drown out the cliché club music with a cocktail or two, and weave your way through the sea of Sex-and-the-City-aspiring posers, you can focus on what really makes this place special... THE FOOD. Recommended Dishes: - Spare Ribs - Edamame Dumplings - Rock Shrimp - Vegetable Fried Rice - Peking Duck The Spare Ribs are an homage to traditional Chinese cooking techniques, a perfect balance of sweet & savory elements, and a must-try introduction to your Buddakan experience. My first bite into these candied morsels of meat and fat on bone triggered my carnivorous instincts, reminding me why I could never be a vegetarian (fuck rabbit food). The Edamame Dumplings are paper-thin Har Gow dough, filled with a silky-smooth puree of edamame and butter, steamed to perfection, and served in a Shallot & Sauternes broth. It's the perfect marriage of steamed edamame flavor with a mochi-like texture. The Rock Shrimp, just like the Spare Ribs, nails that perfect balance of sweet & savory on the head. The glaze on the crispy texture underneath is dynamite. Not a big fan of shrimp, but this isn't your normal cocktail-hour hor d'oeuvres. This is meat candy from the sea. The Vegetable Fried Rice is perfection in a bowl. It's served with a topping of egg foam, which is meant to be mixed in tableside and gives an added warmth to the texture of the rice. I wish I could tell you which vegetables were used in this dish, but other than shallots, the flavors melded together into an indecipherable medley of deliciousness. The Peking Duck is the main event. The skin is perfectly crispy, and the meat tender. It's served with a bamboo steamer of dumpling wrappers and sides of julienned green onions, chopped cucumbers, and a sweet-&-savory hoisin gochujang. You can replenish these accoutrements as needed. Tip: Try pairing the vegetable fried rice with the assembled wraps, one after the other. It's like a renaissance in your mouth. Overall, a truly visceral experience. Very nice venue, one of the most elegant and interesting I've visited in NYC. Food were delicious, I had oxtail dumplings which was flavorful; sizzling short rib with mushroom chow fun which was my favorite because the rib was very well cooked and melts in your mouth and mushroom chow fun was flavorful, and duck salad which was good too. Tip: make sure you request for the dinning room where it's the most nice area to dine. read more

This place was fantastic! From the atmosphere to the service to the food. We enjoyed everything that was put on our table. I started with the Royal to drink. It was very good. We ordered the Dim Sum Tasting for three and Pork Buns. All delicious! We decided to get one entree and three sides to split for the table : Ma La Chicken, Wild Mushroom Chow Fun (Favorite for the night!) Wok Charred Broccoli and Tai San Cauliflower (Amazing!!) I have to say the noodles were the hit for the table and the Chicken was our least favorite for the night. That being said.......there was absolutely nothing wrong with the chicken at all. Very Trendy and upscale place. Went there on a Saturday evening and the place was packed. It draws a very well dressed crowd, and has a dinning area on the lower level. Pros: ambiance, service, food selection, location Cons: Can be crowded and yes a bit pricey read more

Oh Buddakan, you've won my heart again! -The calamari salad remains my ALL-TIME favorite -The pork potstickers were very good, and this is from someone who's not a pork-lover -the yellowtail yu sheng was delicious. Wish the portion were bigger though -The black cod was cooked to perfection. I thought the lobster was great, but this tasted even better. Glad I ordered something different -CHARM for drink again. Delicious as I remembered and -so was the Crying Chocolate! I would come back in a heartbeat! read more

I met the owner of this spot a few years ago in Philadelphia. Nice guy & he owns a lot of establishments between there and NYC. So, with girlfriends in tow, we decided to do a girls night at Buddakhan. Classy spot. We really enjoyed ourselves & dressed up accordingly. My food portion was perfect. I ordered the Black bean silken tofu. Amazing. Tasted wonderful, not too salty or slimy. Very filling. I also treated myself with a Dream, which was a tasty refresher for summer with a wonderful watermelon flavor. Our waiter was very nice too. I really had a good time here. I'll come back eventually. read more

"So we round this corner, right, and then it just opens up into this giant, gorgeous pit with tables at the bottom! I felt like I was in the Asian fusion restaurant equivalent of the Chand Baori!" = Actual phrasing uttered by yours truly in describing Buddakan and its main dining area. My friend and I stopped by here for dinner before an Elite event that consisted of lots of drinks and no food. We got: - Spicy Yellowtail Yu Sheng: Delicious and tangy, with smoked chili and pineapple - Lobster Fried Rice: Fluffy without being too oily, served with Chinese sausage, pomelo and blue basil. I would've preferred more seasoning, though - Salt and Pepper Black Bass: The best dish. Fried, crisp fish with ginger and red chili The food, although a bit under-portioned for the prices, was quite delicious, and the service was top-notch. Between Buddakan and Hakkasan, I give the edge to Buddakan. Nicer staff and more interesting food. read more

Buddakan is an extremely underrated restaurant in the meat packing district of Manhattan. I was very excited to have dinner at Buddakan because it is the same place that Carrie Bradshaw had her rehearsal dinner in the Sex and the City movie. The decorations and ambiance were absolutely perfect. The menu is exquisite. I love the cocktails. We ordered the lobster fried rice, dumplings and steak. All were delicious. The only reason this restaurant doesn't have five stars is because the hostesses and wait staff are not very friendly. I've heard the same complaint from other patrons. read more

Once again, Stephen Starr doesn't disappoint. Having been to several Starr restaurants in Philly (and having made many outings to Le Diplomate in DC), it was time to try out Buddakan during my last trip to New York. An evening at Buddakan is a great experience, from starting the evening in the very nice, modern Asian-decorated lounge with drinks right through the expertly made and presented meal. One thing that immediately made an impression on me was the friendliness of the staff. Often, popular "destination restaurants" have staff that often come off as pretentious or stand-offish, but that certainly wasn't the case here. The bartenders were quite friendly, and our server was just delightful, making sure that we selected items off the menu that suited our tastes. Based on her recommendations, we started the evening with some lobster egg rolls and an amazing scallion pancake topped with braised short rib, and I could have easily ordered the scallion pancakes again for dessert! My own entree was the charred filet of beef, which was amazing -- and, this is where the expertise of our server really came into play, since I was vacillating between two of the beef dishes. She recommended the filet, saying just four words: "soy-infused garlic butter". Need I say more? An excellent evening, great setting, wonderful food, and personalized service. I can't recommend Buddakan highly enough. read more

Buddakan is just the place to go if you're wanting a softly lit, mysteriously charming restaurant for food and drinks. The scene is very trendy with stylish dressed people having convo's while still being able to notice the hip background music. It is definitely a great spot for a group outing or a cool date night. It's a popular restaurant, so I highly recommend making a reservation. My friend and I started the night off with drinks. I was impressed with the 'wine by the glass' list. It was short and to the point, but the options were good and fairly priced. For my entrée, I ordered the Shrimp and Lobster Chow Fun, which consisted of flavorsome jumby shrimp, large pieces of lobster, vegetables, savory noodles, and a delightful sauce. This dish was definitely one to please. Our waitress was ok, but she didn't seem too friendly. However, it wasn't bad service. Overall, I like this place and I am sure I'll return. read more

By far the most interesting asian fusion restaurants I have ever eaten at. Three dishes was all it took to make me remember this place. It's an expensive dining experience but it's well worth it. Reservations recommended. Walking through the restaurant was interesting. Very well decorated with dim lights in the upper level. The bar is pretty laid back and has a chill vibe. The service I had that day was relatively good and friendly. Now for the food: Of the three dishes I remembered, the deviled tuna tartare, boneless spare ribs, and kungpao monkfish were the best!! The deviled tuna tartare was a good start. It was pretty much like eating sushi but it certainly had a flavor twist I can't quite describe. As for the kungpao monkfish, it was pretty rich. It was mild and it had similar flavors to kungpao chicken but the monkfish was superb and the made the dish great. Best for last, the boneless spare ribs was the most impressive. The sauce was so delicious and the meat was so tender! Most memorable meat I have ever had. I want to go back for more of the boneless spare ribs. Hope this helps! :) read more

Went here for my birthday (back in January before the Coronavirus lockdown) and it was awesome! Our waitress (Jenn) was awesome! We left her a big tip. My favorite dish (so far) is the Kung Pao MONKFISH! DELISH!! Also the hot and sour scallops are off the charts! Oh and the Peking duck is soooooo good. OMG so many good things. And the drinks aren't bad either! Very strong! read more

Let's be honest.....We came here for dinner mostly because we wanted to see for our own eyes the restaurant that made such an impact on one of my favorite movies of all times......"Sex in the City". The decor and space is mesmerizing. It is grand and enormous and so different from typical NYC restaurant! We were early for our reservation so we sat in the bar/lounge to wait for our table. They sat us promptly at our reservation time. We were seated in a very dark sexy room. The waiter suggested we choose one dim sum and one entree for each person. He also mentioned that the menu is suggested family style. The waiter then warned us that dishes would be brought to the table as they were ready. I love this theory. Each dish is perfectly hot! This sort of dining experience is very demanding in the wait staff. Unfortunately this part of the dining was a miss for me. First, we ordered less food than our waiter suggested but there was literally not enough room on the table for all of the plates. We were constantly stacking our plates on top of plates. Second, the staff was not efficient in removing the empty dishes. To the food...... We ordered pork dumplings, hoisin glazed pork belly, and shrimp dumpling to start. Let me just say the hoisin glazed pork belly served with sticky buns were to die for!!!! For dinner we ordered pepper steak, black cod, and chili chicken. Everything was tasty!!! At the end of service our waiter sort of disappeared. And after we paid he completely disappeared! If the service would have been better it would have absolutely gotten a better rate from me!!! read more

I very rarely visit the same restaurant twice, but It was monday and I needed a "hip" restaurant to visit for a special occasion. An amazing experience once again! This time I was with one other person. We show up to the bar area and mentioned that it's the eve of my wife's birthday. Immediately he served up some "special mixes" not on the menu and we were escorted to our table in one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Manhattan. We ordered the lobster egg rolls(an absolute must), the monk fish, bbq eel fried rice and the cracked chilly chicken. Everything was excellent (from the point of view that this place serves up high end American style chinese food). For dessert we got the bread pudding. The best bread pudding I ever had! My wife engulfed it even though she absolutely hates sweets. Great spot. You will see some tourists here. You'll also find your fair share of suits and suits disguised in their casual clothing. read more

First time here and this restaurant was amazing. From the decor walking down the stairs to the food. Everything about it was great. Hung out in the lounge first until they were ready to seat us. It is a dark in there they could have a little more lighting because you can barely see. We did wait 45 minutes until we got seated so we just had a shot at the lounge bar while waiting. Food was great! Service was awesome! read more

This place is totally rock star..... Super hip, cool, trendy, but not douchie.... Dress cool... Guys in nice shirts and jeans or slacks, ladies in hot dresses and heels. Food is fantastic. King crab sticky rice and duck fried rice were delicious. Kung pao monk fish is a signature item and not to be missed. If you are in NY on a visit or live here and want to impress your friends or out of town guests, you won't miss by choosing Buddakan. read more

Happened upon Buddakan while trying to find a restaurant everyone in the group would like while getting a chance to try something different. My company have a penchant for sticking to chain restaurants. When I travel, I like to try new places. Buddakan is not easy to find. Our Uber driver said we were at the right place, but did not see any signs. To help others out, it is across the street from Google and next door to Chelsea Market, but not connected. The initial entry is impressive and won over the others. The menu is a little pricey, but expected. It did throw off the chainers. Appetizers run $12 - $18. Entrees from the low $20s to mid $30s. Peking Duck was $55. Our group ordered a selection of appetizers and entrees. The food was incredible. Absolutely won over the skeptics and price was never mentioned again. We finished the night with a selection of desserts. The Banana Pudding was fantastic. I highly recommend Buddakan. read more

You will not see me give many 5 star ratings, but this place was flawless. The main thing I remember was going down stairs to be seated with our large party and just say "This is on some Bruce Wayne shit." The ambiance was amazing, music, vibe, people, the food, the service, the drinks, as well as the aesthetics. We were in a large party so we ordered pretty much half of the menu and passed everything around. Every single item I ate was amazing and packed with taste, as well as full of authenticity. Here are a handful of items we ordered and I highly recommend. The Steam Sea Bass Roll Jade Shrimp Dumplings Edamame Dumplings Tuna Tartar Spring Rolls Chili Rock Shrimp Fried Rice (not sure which one but I'm sure they're all worth trying) Sugar Snap Peas Kung Pao Monkfish This is definitively a place to hit to experience the real NYC feel. Also ideal for an anniversary, or any time you want to get in someone's pants. My wife, who doesn't like seafood, flipped off the Tuna Tartar, Sea Bass and Monkfish. This place is a win win. This was the absolute Worst!!!experience I had along with my family all because of a pompous, prejudice disgusting character of the staff especially the Waitress!!! I along with my colleague , my daughter, her best friend and her boyfriend attended. We were celebrating my daughter's 19 birthday. My colleague, I and my daughters best friend walked into the restaurant first. We were nicely greeted by the women up front. We were then seated in the lounge/waiting area. We were waiting for my daughter and her boyfriend to park their car at a nearby parking garage/designated area. (Side note: I have worked In the Chelsea area for many years and have frequented most of the restaurants in the area and have always been treated with respect and good customer service) a waitress with golden blonde hair asked my friend and I if we would like to order a cocktail while waiting. So we decided , why not have a cocktail. They presented us with the menu and i ordered the blush a lychee drink and my friend a drink named Vigor which she didn't like lol but drank it anyway. Way too pricey $20 subpar cocktails.. I've had Lychee cocktails that were top notch for less. Anyways my daughter and her bf came in and I told the waitress to have them seated while I pay my tab at the bar. I gave them My varo card which I use everyday every where even restaurants and receive my direct deposits from work . I keep my other bank and credit cards at home for other purposes . The tab was closed out by the waitress and I also included a tip . I audacity to treat us horribly and I was just trying to have a nice birthday dinner for my daughter and her friends.. it's sad. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants! The waiters are friendly, informative, and attentive. I definitely recommend getting the edamame dumplings, cauliflower lollipops, ribs appetizer, roast chicken congee and chinese sausage fried rice. You will not be disappointed! Tranquility and Deflection are my favorite drinks here, they are expensive ($15) but worth it once in a while. Amazing food but more importantly top-notch customer service! My cousin celebrated her birthday dinner last night with a party of 12. She ran a bit behind and was late for her 9:15 reservation unlike other similar restaurants in the city that have the "you snooze you lose, reservation cancelled" Buddakan was extremely accommodating. It's Meatpacking so it is pricey, but the quality of the food is outstanding and worth every penny. We opted out of the pre-fixe option (another plus, it's not mandatory if you're under 14 ppl) and went with family style dining. Brian our waiter suggested we order an individual entree, shareable sides and apps. Amongst my sister and niece we ordered the Lobster Egg Rolls, General Tso's dumplings, Dungeness Crab Sticky Rice, Shrimp & Lobster Chow Fun, Sweet & Crispy Jumbo Shrimp, and Singapore Chili King Crab all was well prepared and full of flavor not one disappointing dish. I also ordered their lomein veggie bowl - man, what a disappointment! Basically, I received a container of steamed vegetables and boiled noodles - no sauce or anything. Again, if I put my own spin on it, it would be fine - but when I order out, I don't want to season my own food. It should be prepared as it. Also, I had the short rib buns and they were ok. The sweet potato fry topper was really stale and stiff, and the coleslaw seemed droopy and old - but it was fine. The delivery has also always come very quick, which is a plus as well. I can't remember what The New Godfather of Lunch or Sir Cheapness (former Godfather of Lunch) ordered, but I had 2 very large pieces of perfectly cooked Salmon, and a massive pile of rice, which I picked at sparingly. The Salmon was delicious and very filling all on its own. And the salad was comprised of quality lettuce (it has always been my experience that if you receive a salad made up chiefly of Iceberg lettuce, you're eating at a cheap...in terms of quality, not necessarily price...restaurant). Once my heart had recovered from the unexpected shock of my healthy eating, I imagined I could hear it offer up a faint but...dare I say it?..."heartfelt" paen of thanks to whatever God or Gods exist that I've finally...at long last... changed my ways? (I think my liver offered up that same paen of thanks when I stopped the drinking and the opioids). After a few years, I moved to a smaller firm with Southern roots, where the culture was more humane, the work gave me greater autonomy, and I produced some of the strongest results of my career, even within an industry still governed by fear, greed, and status. Inside, the red booths, low lighting, generous spacing, and hand-painted monkey murals made lunch feel ceremonial without becoming stiff. The room was timeless and handsome, with polished service, quality food, and the subtle assurance of a place where you could be proud to bring someone important. I especially remember sitting in one of those booths with two mentors, each only a few years older than I was and therefore close enough in vintage to feel relatable, trustworthy, and genuinely within reach. One had entered my life after I left the larger firm and helped me understand an earlier chapter that had also ended abruptly and, at the time, felt deeply unfair; the other had guided me through the smaller firm where I finally found a more sustainable way to work. Over that long lunch, I introduced them, we discussed several promising ideas, and for a moment my career seemed to have reached the point where relationships, experience, and opportunity were finally converging. One of those ideas consumed an extraordinary amount of my time and energy, and I believed it might become the foundation of my next chapter. If you have a palate that prefers 100% Chinese food, proceed with caution on this dish. Friends ordered sides of mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. These are dishes originally meant for low-income Americans to fill up on cheaply; there's no limit to how good they can be, but also no floor to how bad they can get. Both were on par with the average quality found in upscale restaurants. Honestly, these are two dishes I would never order myself. To sum up: the atmosphere was great. It's also hard to get a reservation; the place was packed when we had lunch at 2 PM. Aside from that monkey bread, I didn't feel like anything else justified the price or offered something you couldn't find elsewhere. I don't quite get the hype. Perhaps I just didn't order the right dishes; maybe next time I'll try the burger and the steak.

Stephen Starr is a former concert promoter who understands that buzz and a fabulous room can be as important as sublime food. The man owns 12 high-profile Philly restaurants, which per capita would translate to something like 64 eateries in New York. While his first venture in our city--Morimoto--garnered as much attention for its eponymous celebrity chef as for its food and space, Buddakan relies almost entirely on the shock and awe of 16,000 stunning square feet. Designer Christian Liaigre helped Starr turn a windowless bunker in the Chelsea Market building--one block east of Morimoto--into a labyrinthine Chinese theme park. Open the giant gate of a door and you are greeted by a hotel-style lineup of hosts. Continue inside and you pass a bustling front bar, dominated by giant square tables, a birdcage filled with taxidermy, Buddha pictures and European tapestries, all leading to a grand staircase that descends into a soaring, golden-hued main room with a 35-foot ceiling and a long communal table. The food--yes, there's food here, too--sounds more fancy than it really is. Chef Michael Schulson, a Starr veteran who helped launch Buddakan in Philadelphia, pretties up Chinese standards, and then pours them out in a tapas format--all organized in a rather sprawling menu that has separate categories for dim sum, appetizers, noodles, rice, vegetables, soups, meat, fish, poultry and tofu. The various dumplings intrigued me most, so I sampled one with an edamame paste that sat in a broth of sauternes and shallots, which tasted like spicy watermelon. The folks at my table gave the dish mixed reviews. Some felt the sauce was superfluous; others appreciated its subtlety. Certain people loved the chewy wrappers; others were turned off by the aggressive texture. Noodle and rice dishes offer great bang for the buck--they range from $8 to $13--though there's precious little innovation. Something billed as crab fried rice was more like egg fried rice, with just enough crab to become a vaguely fishy rice omelette. Rather than attempt to inject his personality into the dishes, chef Schulson plays it safe. The Mongolian lamb chops were small, covered in a ginger crust and, while tasty, a bit underwhelming. The "sizzling" short rib was a nice cut, with a rich external glaze carrying a hint of lemongrass, but there was no sizzle (and worse, the meat was sour). Steamed snapper, served with a slightly floral sauce that included lily bulbs, resonated with soy but was ultimately a snore. The most enticing dessert, Szechuan-pepper-roasted pineapple, carried way too little heat; I picked out only one lonely peppercorn. After talking to a server, I surmised that the spiciest dishes had been brought down a notch to appeal to the broadest possible audience. That may explain a lot of things: This menu might wow 'em in Philly, but in New York, much of the food seems fine but forgettable. I actually look forward to coming back, but Starr and Schulson have only so much time to prove that this is a temple of food, and not just a temple of style. read more

I recently had dinner at Buddakan in NYC. The space itself is stunning; the lighting, the design, the whole vibe really sets the mood for a special night out. But when it came to the food, it just didn't live up to the atmosphere. We ordered the Dim Sum Tasting for three, which included edamame dumplings, Cantonese spring rolls, jade shrimp dumplings, pork potstickers, General Tso's dumplings, and carrot dumplings . Unfortunately, the noise level in the restaurant was quite high, making it difficult to hear the waiter's explanations. He only described the items to my sister, who herself struggled to catch what was said. This left me uncertain about what I was eating. One dumpling had a taste reminiscent of a pierogi, which I found unappealing. Another contained shrimp an unpleasant surprise, as I dislike shrimp and didn't see it listed on the menu. The edamame dumplings were just okay, as were the pork potstickers and General Tso's dumplings. I didn't care to finish the Cantonese spring rolls, and overall, nothing stood out, which was disappointing given my usual love for dumplings. I also tried the pork bao buns, expecting more tender saucy meat. The Chinese sausage fried rice came topped with a raw egg, which didn't appeal to me. The wild mushroom chow fun noodles had a texture that was too soft for my liking, leaving me unsatisfied. On a positive note, the Broken Chili Chicken had good flavor, even though the breaded skin separated from the meat . The crispy beef lettuce cups were enjoyable, offering a nice crunch and taste. The short rib and scallion pancake was decent, though not particularly memorable. For drinks, I had "The Answer" crafted with Cazadores Blanco tequila, gochugaru chili, agave, blood orange, which tasted good, and "The Royal" crafted with ALB vodka, yuzu, lavender, elderflower tonic, which was beautifully garnished. Dessert included the Crying Chocolate, a molten chocolate cake with Vietnamese coffee ice cream, which my companion enjoyed . Overall, while the setting was impressive and my company delightful, the food did not meet expectations. I don't see myself returning to Buddakan. read more

I was excited to try this place but ultimately left disappointed. The good! 1. The sea bass. Excellent sear and cook, with a delicious truffle sauce. 2. The shrimp bao buns. The slaw and sauce on the fried shrimp was top notch. 3. The presentation. All the dishes were expertly constructed and visually appealing. You could see that care was given before the dishes were sent out. 4. The mocktails. Not too sweet, but great balance and blend of flavors. The bartender was great. The fine... 1. The donuts and peanut butter cake. Nothing to write home about, but perfectly OK. 2. The tuna carpaccio pizza. The ginger on top in addition to the usual jalapeño was a great addition, but the appetizer ultimately doesn't land with the pizza crust--it overpowers what should be the star, the tuna. A thin cracker or no base at all would have been better. The BAD 1. The short rib noodles. Bland, overcooked, and bad proportions of scallions, noodles, mushrooms, and meat. There was nothing to add some texture to what was essentially a bowl of mush. 2. The service. Listen, I normally don't care too much about service as long as the food is good, but when it's this bad it's distracting. We arrived for our reservation at 7:15 PM and were seated at 7:50 PM. We first spoke with some waitstaff at 8:05, and our dishes came out at a snails pace until we got a corrected check and left the restaurant at 10:10 - a nearly three hour event with huge gaps between the food. 3. The ambiance and seating. The restaurant is essentially one giant room with a balcony, and so the acoustics are terrible--it's so loud in there, and it doesn't help that they play house music at a pretty good volume on top of it. It's pretty much impossible to have a conversation unless you're shouting at your dinner mates--it feels more like a club than a restaurant. The seating contains a lot of tables crammed in corners or in high traffic areas. Ultimately, a lot of money for what you get. I feel there are much better restaurants for similar price points and Asian fusion. I'd recommend Double Knot. read more
