I absolutely love Detroit Style Pizza, and I had dreamt about coming to Buddy's for decades! I was finally in Detroit, and made it here right after they opened for lunch on Tuesday. Buddy's is the OG Detroit pizza spot. The inventor! Was so stoked I was finally here! I went with a 4 corner, half cheese, half pepperoni, well done and a Vernor's to drink. My friendly waitress let me know it would be 15-20 minutes. My pizza arrived. How was it? Everything I had dreamt of and more! The pizza was so delicious! The cheese, the crust, the cheese skirt. Everything about it was great! Crunchy, cheesy, piping hot! Such a good pizza. I only ate 2 slices, since I was going to other spots during the day. (I did eat the leftover 2 slices after the Tigers game that night. Delicious cold, too!) Check that off the bucket list. Would definitely come back. This was an outstanding pizza! Got one of their pizza and salad deals (and then ordered an extra 4 square to try a different pizza). The Wisconsin brick cheese had that enviable cheese pull and the crispy edges (and bottom) gave a great taste and satisfying bite. Threw in a local beer to wash everything down. "Jaylisa" (not sure of spelling, but that's how it sounds) served us, and was the sweetest and most attentive server we had in Detroit! Not too long a wait for it to land on our table. Its aroma is delightful! The cheese pull is LEGIIIIT! The pizza dough isn't too thick or thin, more of a light and soft texture. We decided this cold, snowy day was a perfect pizza day. Got to the Original Buddy's on Conant about noon. Lots of gated, on site, complimentary parking available and clear of snow. The inside has likely not changed much in nearly 80 years. The big beer served there back then was Detroit's Stroh's. Plaques of that time-honored beverage decorate the bar ceiling area. Seating was comfy. The place was meticulously clean, and every last associate was friendly, attentive and kind. Janice was our server. She's worked there since the mid-1980's. A very solid, all-around experience. We stopped by for dinner on Good Friday and did pizza, pasta, cheese bread, salad, and dessert, and all of it was great. The birthplace of Detroit style pizza! This is a spot you must try once in life, but you'll probably want to return. Classic decor and friendly staff! I've been here a few times and you can't go wrong with any pizza. The minestrone soup is a famous recipe made for decades, it's thicker than I expected - but pretty good. Salad was good, but the bread basket is very plain. I can't say enough about how much I love the pizza! Buttery, crispy edges with thick dough that is soft, chewy, and crisp. We waited another 30 minutes for the pizza. 1 hour wait. They made the wrong sized pizza (4 slice instead of 8). The waitress that we saw once brought it out, briefly apologized and said the full sized would be on the way shortly. We ate a cold, hard slice of pizza. 15 minutes later our actual pizza comes out. By this time, we are all so annoyed and aren't wanting to tip well to a waitress we barely saw in a near empty restaurant. Here's the kicker, the tip is automatically and stealthily added at 20%. I used to live in Michigan and loved getting Buddy's from the Plymouth location. I move to AZ a few years ago and recently ordered 3 original style sausage pizzas to be shipped via Goldbelly and boy was I pissed...the crap they shipped to me had half the toppings and sauce as what I'd get there. Although I have eaten here many times, I have never reviewed the original Buddy's location. I can't say enough about how great this place is. Obviously, I am a huge fan of their pizza and salad, but the original location is so worth the visit. The staff is simply amazing - friendly, authentic and attentive. I could not believe how friendly and helpful they were. The decor inside is exactly as I remember it as a kid, but despite its age, it somehow stays very clean and well-maintained. If you want to play bocci ball, you can still use one of the two small courts out back. There are a variety of seating options, including the back room which would accommodate a large group if needed. The bar is my favorite since you can watch the game or meet new people. Incredible. One of the best pizzas I've ever had outside of New York City. (Easily better than Chicago and New Haven.) This was recommended to us by someone from the Motown museum. We were driving from Toronto to Chicago essentially using Detroit has a pitstop that we would probably forget about, but based on the pizza we had here it's clear that Detroit is a destination in and of itself. Having finally stepped into the original Buddy's Pizza I have a lot of feelings. Part of me is disappointed in myself for waiting so long. Another part is full of longing for everyone who has experienced the pizza at the other Buddy's locations to visit the mothership. And still another part is angry about the expansion of this Detroit classic because the pizza made further afield does not do justice to the original. Is this in a rough part of town? Maybe. Is it a longer drive to get there? Probably. Is the ambiance more neighborhood dive bar than famous pizza joint? Absolutely. Doesn't matter. It just adds more to the charm. It make going an ever more special experience. If you like pizza, just go. Now, is it the best of all the Detroit style pizza places out there? I'd argue there are actually better pies out there. But one should come and pay their respects every now and again. Our waitress advised that to get the true taste of the classic, one has to get the pepperoni under the cheese, instead of the old world pepperoni that are cooked on top. While that may be true, the pepperoni on the top work so much harder. Next time, I think I may have go get triple pepperoni. Classic on the bottom and double old-world pepperoni on top. Because while the cup and char works well, there just wasn't enough of them on the pie. So it goes. Sometimes one has to hone in on how to order the best pizza even at a great spot. The sausage wasn't great, more like pizza sausage pellets than the real deal, but it did have some good pop of fennel seeds in the mix. Also tried the Greek Town pie, which was also pretty darn tasty. I wanted a crispier bottom and just more caramelized cheese along the edge crusts. Even still, these elements were superior at the Hazel Park location than I experienced at other Buddy's outposts. We explained this to the waitress, who knows the story all too well. She has heard it all before, and let my table know about how the staff goes out to the restaurants to teach them how to make the pizza properly. It's like the old saying of leading a horse to water. Anyhow, I feel spiritually fulfilled for having eaten a pie on Conant Street, and I hope you get the chance to do so as well. Now's the season. When it's cold. Because this will warm you up. Deeply. Our final stop of our pizza adventure before going to the Tiger's game was to Buddy's Pizza. And not just to Buddy's but to the original spot where it all began. Parking is on site in a private parking lot with a security guard on site. Inside is very old school and casual, which is just my style. The woman that helped us was extremely nice and helpful during our visit. Everything was top notch. We got the Margherita pie and the Detroit Television which was basically a Pepperoni pizza; both Detroit style being this is where it all began. When I say phenomenal, that's an understatement. Both myself and my buddy have this as the top pizza place we hit in Detroit over the weekend. Crust was thick, light and SUPER crispy, the sauce was flavorful and I little spice to it and it's high quality mozzarella with a great cheese pull without even ordering extra cheese. This was a home run that was hit before even going to the game. People were telling us.... It's a chain, etc, etc. I don't know about the satellite locations, but the original is the real deal. Originally wanted to grab takeout from Loui's but the wait for pickup was too long (40mins on a Sunday night ) and had buddys as my backup. I should've went to buddys to begin with because this might be the best pizza I've had in my life. Ordered the 4 square Hawaiian to go and only took 15 ish mins. It came out piping hot and I knew I had to eat it asap. The dough was crispy but sooo light and fluffy. I've had 2-3 squares and it didn't feel heavy at all.
