Originally wanted to grab takeout from Loui's but the wait for pickup was too long (40mins on a Sunday night ) and had buddys as my backup. I should've went to buddys to begin with because this might be the best pizza I've had in my life. Ordered the 4 square Hawaiian to go and only took 15 ish mins. It came out piping hot and I knew I had to eat it asap. The dough was crispy but sooo light and fluffy. I've had 2-3 squares and it didn't feel heavy at all. I made the trek from Lexington, Kentucky, to Detroit City for one reason and one reason only. I wanted to try the original Detroit style pizza at Buddy's. Ladies and gentleman, it did not disappoint. We started with the Antipasto salad. I highly recommend, as that gets you prepared for the absolute deliciousness that is about to come. We couldn't decide on what kind of pizza to get. Thankfully, Zeke was our waiter, and he was by far the best server we have had in probably ten years. He told us to order two pizzas, and get half Signatures on both. That way, we could try four different Signature creations. Which ones did we get? Heck, I don't know. It doesn't even matter. They were all fantastic. This is truly in the top three pizza places I've been in my entire life. So fresh, so tasty, and so good in an atmosphere that is beyond cool. While the neighborhood is run down, they have security in the parking lot so it is totally worth it. My daughter ordered the spaghetti. It was great but who cares? Go get the pizza. It doesn't matter how far you've got to drive (clearly it didn't to me) or what it takes to get there, but this place is a bucket list kinda place. read more

I could easily have tried any of a number of Buddy's locations, but for my foodie credentials, I wanted to visit the original. I wasn't disappointed. The industrial atmosphere of a building decorated with Detroit's cultural iconography was distinctive. I ordered a pizza with jalapeños and mushrooms, and was taken aback to receive one with pineapple on it. Detroit-style or otherwise, pineapple on pizza is just never going to happen for me. Apparently I somehow ended up with a Hawaiian pizza by mistake, for which I received conflicting explanations. They were very apologetic, but I told them not to rush as it was the quality of the end product that I came for. When I eventually received my pizza, however, it delivered all that I could have hoped for. I opted for a multigrain crust, and held out some concern that I might end up with sacrificing something on flavor or texture. The crust was delightfully light and fluffy, and this is where imitators of Detroit-style pizza often go wrong in my view, by giving you a crust that's too thick and bready. The cheese crisped beautifully as is the custom, and the spice note of the jalapeños and the earthiness of the mushrooms delivered the contrast in flavors and textures that I wanted. I wolfed the pizza down quickly, though I slowed on the last couple of bites, sadly pondering the notion that there might not be any more of these pizzas hitting my taste buds for the foreseeable future. It's not that I don't have any criticisms. I found their menu lacking, with entree salads but no real side salad and not much else for me to order. While the distinctive local brand of Faygo sodas held space on their wall art, it didn't have a place on their menu for some reason, and the Vernor's ginger beverage that they did have wasn't anything special the last time I tried it. I wish they'd change these things. But I suspect that like many, I fell for the Detroit-style craze that seemed like a very COVID-era national phenomenon, having started a bit before, and for every place promoting this style that I've tried, thanks are clearly owed to the self-proclaimed original promoter of this delicious pizza. read more

This is the original Buddy's Pizza, located on Six Mile and Conant Street on the eastside of Detroit. I mention the location straight off because I visited a different Buddy's Pizza downtown, and as soon as I stepped inside, I knew it wasn't the original Buddy's. There are a few Buddy's in Detroit! It was nice and modern, and I'm sure it was amazing, but I wanted to visit the original Buddy's. So I got up, apologized and headed for the eastside. So, this is the original Buddy's Pizza, and it's been around for more than 75 years. This place is where Detroit-style pizza was born! According to history, Detroit-style pizza was created when Gus Guerra and his crew baked a pizza in a square, steel auto pan. The pan created the crispy-edged pizza that we now know and love. It's really cool visiting this restaurant, because you can feel the history everywhere you look. It's on the walls and baked into every pan of pizza. Even the restaurant itself is old-school and labyrinthine -- we were led to our seats and walked through at least three different rooms filled with people. I visited Buddy's with children who do not like a lot of things on their pizza, so we kept it simple and just ordered a pepperoni pizza. The pepperoni pizza doesn't come with a lot of pepperoni, which I was grateful for because one of my children usually picks the pepperoni off. The pizza was spongy and thick, with just the right proportion of sauce and lots of cheese. They serve local beer on tap. There are two beers that they serve that are brewed by a local brewery especially for Buddy's: Buddy Brew and Bocce IPA. I got the Bocce IPA because I love IPAs. It was refreshing and light, and a great beer to drink with a rich pizza. They serve the beers in these big challis glasses that made me feel like royalty! This Buddy's Pizza is definitely a must-visit if you're in Detroit. Detroit is a city full of history, and this is just one of the historical aspects of the Motor City that are worth exploring. read more

Ah yes, the original. It was here that Detroit-style pizza was initiated in the 1940s. This was a pizza pilgrimage I had to make in my lifetime, having already eaten in all the best pizzerias the East Coast has to offer. And it was simply marvelous, even exceeding expectations! That thick buttery crust often copied but never duplicated was crunchy but tender, simple yet complex, flavorful and still subtle. That impossibly stretchy cheese and the fresh, diced tomatoes were perfect complements to this rectangular perfection! It's an experience I shall never forget, and one you all must have! He gave us wonderful recommendations, great service , and he was just fun! We had a delicious meal and a great time. We had 2 different kinds of pizza and the famous antipasto salad and it was all so good! So much so that we are going back tomorrow for more! And the manager Rondah stopped by our table to make sure everything was great and we let her know how happy we were with our entire experience, a true testament to what a great job she is doing running everything! I've been here once before but I'm not exactly sure why I never reviewed it. It's quite obvious the enjoyed it the first time enough for me to come back and pay them a visit. The building looks small from the outside, but it's actually quite spacious inside. You get an old school vibe in here and the staff has always been friendly. The place was packed when we arrived and we're lucky to have gotten a table. My go-to here is their Detroiter. It's one of the best pizzas I have ever tried. It comes with Wisconsin brick cheese, pepperoni, tomato basil sauce, shaved Parmesan cheese, and their special Buddy's spice blend. It's absolutely phenomenal. What really makes this pizza special is the sauce. I wish they could put more of this sauce on the pizza. You get the perfect amount of cheese and the spice blend gives it a little kick. The crust is also good. It's thick and put in the oven for just the perfect amount of time. This is a must order every time I'm in Detroit. read more

It's a small hallway you go and as soon as you come in they ask you your number or if you want to sit. We ordered a regular pepperoni pizza. We ordered a large and I think it was $20. We had one day in Detroit. This was a top spot for me as I love Detroit style pizza. We called and were told to be in the door by 8 for dining in. We got there at 7:51. Initially we were told that seating had closed and we were so disappointed. Dejuan (sorry if it's spelled wrong) insisted that we be seated and proceeded to provide the very best service! If you're lucky enough to get him as your server count yourself blessed. He's amazing! The food was so delicious and drinks were great too. So thrilled we got to experience this Detroit institution! As we were driving through the city, I had the idea of trying out the OG Detroit style.pizza. Back home we enjoy an occasional Detroit pizza from a chain, which is great. So why not try the original. It also makes me think of another Chicago Deep Dish OG that we frequent. It's a valuable thing to be. So the surrounding area seemed kind of industrial and I have no idea about the various neighborhoods of Detroit. Even the restaurant looked like a trailer from the outside. Once inside, I was relieved to see that it was a big place and quite decent inside. Point is to not be turned away by the look of the exterior. The service was ok. We had a number of different servers coming to the table. Some were polite and kind and some seemed to be a bit unhappy. Finally to the food. Well, first of all, the mozzarella sticks were like meh. Probably a frozen kind. The pizza was good we had an 8 corner for 3 of us and we polished it all off. I enjoyed the bready inside with crispy outsides, as expected. The caramelized burnt cheese around the outside is great. The cheese was also good, but sharing just was a bit off, overall. I think there wasn't enough sauce on the pizza. The bites sheet I had enough sauce were awesome, but there was just a shortage of it. The jalapeno side of the pizza was better, because the peppers added some good flavor, which is what was missing overall. I bet I could just order with extra sauce next time, but that's a first time learning. I will give it another shot next time I'm around. read more

It's no wonder they were voted best Detroit style pizza! I'm from Chicago and was visiting Detroit for a day trip and decided I wanted to try Detroit style square pizza for the 1st time. I did some research and reviews all pointed to the original location. It's the best because their pans are the original pans and they are so well seasoned the pizzas always come out the way they should unlike their other branch locations. We were warmly greeted upon entering the restaurant and we were met by the sweetest server Adrianne. I hope I remembered her name right. We ordered the 4 square and couldn't decide which to get. She suggested we do a half and half. So we chose the Detroit Public TV (2 layers of pepperoni between cheese) and the Detroiter (pepperoni with Parmesan and spices). Both were so good. I had it delivered so I can't speak to the space or service aside from they responded quickly, the food arrived hot, and they provided ample napkins and utensils. Locals typically mention Buddy's, Loui's, and Cloverleaf when discussing where the best Detroit-style pizza is. Out of those 3, I prefer Buddy's, but Loui's is a close second. I had Buddy's pizza for decades. My parents used to take us kids to the original Buddy's at Conant. My wife and I just ate at a Buddy's in Warren, Mi. The pizza wasn't the same. The crust was half the size and the pizza itself didn't taste like Buddy's of the past. Not sure what has happened with the traditional pizza but I can tell you that is certainly is not the same from years past. I wish and hope we received an "off night". I've been eating Buddy's pizza since I started sporting teeth. Or so the story goes that my mom would give me the crust to chew on when I was teething. There's just something about that crust. I haven't found pizza anywhere that can compete with Buddy's. It's simply the best. If change is inevitable the one constant in my life has been Buddy's. The pizza recipe hadn't changed and that's a good thing! From that buttery caramelized crust to the mounds of brick cheese and that robust pizza sauce there's a reason Buddy's consistently ranks in the top ten of pizza across the country. The original 6 Mile and Conant location is still the best IMO. Don't let the neighborhood deter you from visiting. It's part of the experience and I've never felt unsafe. If their pizza is the shining star the antipasto salad is the runner up. Loads of ham, Genoa salami, brick cheese with their homemade dressing makes for a delicious warm up to the pizza. The individual (small) size is easily enough for 2-3 people to share. Buddy's is the birthplace of Detroit style pizza which is becoming more and more recognized across the country. Very pleased with this classic spot and very happy with how good Detroit style is! As a New Yorker, we obviously have an obsession with pizza but wanted the legit thing when visiting Detroit. Came here on a late lunch situation, but still within the lunch special time. We were able to get 2 toppings with 4 slices for not much money and it was absolutely devoured! Love the crispy edges, love the toppings and loved how good the service was. It was also a big vote of confidence that there was a steady take out service happening while we were dining in. Hub and I have been faithful customers of this location for at least 25years, they must be doing something right!. Memorabilia pictures line the walls when you walk in and up a short flight of stairs. When you open the door, all you can smell is that wonderful pizza cooking, welcome to Buddy's!!! Upon entering that is the dining room with long tables to accommodate large families in the center. Tables for four and two people on the outer sides of the room. Several TV's to watch also. Downstairs is a beautiful renovated bar with long counter and bar stools to have a cold one! New booths have been installed as well. We chose to dine in the bar area and were greeted by a very pleasant young man. Got our drinks and ordered our pizza, large 8piece Sicilian. Out it came to us in a timely fashion. OMG, a masterpiece I must admit, it looked delicious and delicious it was and then some!! Our waiter checked on us several times to refill our water glasses. Our pizza was cooked well done as instructed and had ample cheese and toppings galore. Our pizza was 26.00 but so worth the money and we had leftovers for breakfast. Our remaining portions were boxed up and we paid our bill and left for home. They have a large menu with numerous choices to select, also have Sanders hot fudge sundae for dessert. Buddy's pizza is the original home of the Detroit deep dish pizza. Very lauded and famous pizza joint that when me and my family planned a weekend getaway to Detroit we had at the top of our lists. I'm a huge pizza lover and I've seen This place crack several lists for the best pizza in the USA. Upon arriving they had parking lot attendants getting your party Size and giving you a wait time and advising where to park. The outside of the building is pretty neat. Some cool art and some things showing some of there accomplishments and notoriety from established critics. Upon walking it they had walls full of the same stuff. Very cozy inside with what looked like 3 sections. An upstairs, a downstairs to the bar area and another dining are off that room. Every worker we came across here was great. Very personable and customer service friendly. For example I was waiting outside the lobby area for one of my daughters to use the restroom and I had 7 different workers check on me to see if I had Been helped or served. So they are on things service wise. The food came up really quickly too. We ordered a 4 square cheese, an 8 square pepperoni and the wife got a family sized salad. The pizza absolutely lived up to the hype and maybe surpassed it. Great tasting pizza. Good cheese, sauce and softy crusty bread. Coming into the establishment I was curious how I'd like it because Me experience with Detroit style pizzas (granted never actually had one in Detroit) was they was just solid. They seems like a cheese bread app instead of a pizza. However, not this place. Phenomenal tasting pizza. Normally I'm a cheese pizza guy and don't prefer pepperoni. While the cheese here is great the pepperoni is Even better. Overall a great experience. Me, the wife and ally the kids loved the pizza. My oldest daughter liked it so much that she wanted to commemorate the evening and get a souvenir t shirt. Which I'm a sucker so I got her one. Cost $16 and it's nicer shirt so not a bad value. On our drive home from Toronto we finally got to try the famous Buddy's Pizza AKA the first Detroit-style pizza! If you're driving from Toronto to Chicago, one of the Buddy's locations is exactly on the way home with a 10-min (or maybe less) detour. We picked up inside. Decor is 10/10! Lovely pizza-themed murals and history on the walls of Buddy's. It was also just super cozy and inviting. It made me wish we dined in! There is a separate pickup area and dining area. Both are very spacious. The employee who gave us our order was so friendly! We enjoyed chatting before we left with our order. We got what they call an eight corner pizza. For a few dollars extra, you can get a Detroit-style pizza where every pizza slice is a corner slice! Corner slices are the best for the crispy caramelized edge. We always fight over who gets the edge slices, so this resolves that issue! They use multiple pans to create the eight-corner. read more

When we got there around 7:30, there was a sign that said the dining room closed at 7. So we just ordered our food online and waited in the parking lot for pickup. New York style and deep dish pizza can take several seats while I give Buddy's a round of applause for this heavenly slice! The pizza was piping hot and finger lickin good! The crust was everything!
