Sure, there are Buddy's pizza joints popping up all around the burbs. But this one is the original. They do not have call ahead for reservations. It's first come first serve (or seated, in this case). But no worries, we were told it would be a 35 minute wait for a party of four and we were seated in less time. Free parking in a secure, guarded, fenced parking lot. So thankful for the guard on duty helping us find a quick spot to park. Multi room dining area. Men's room is downstairs and ladies room is up in the main dining area near the back. Not sure why they are separated so far apart. We ordered a Detroiter, The Works, and a Buddy salad (antipasto). I was introduced to Buddy's pizza more than 60 years ago. For most of those years, Buddy's produced a pizza that had the well-earned reputation as the best pizza in the Detroit area and one of the very best in the country. Sadly, it's no longer possible to get a pizza at Buddy's that deserves that reputation. When Buddy's decided to expand, some of their new locations quickly departed from the quality that defined Buddy's. The product became soggy and dense, nothing like the product served at Conant and McNichols. I was still able to get reasonable facsimiles at a couple of locations and when I needed confirmation that Buddy's hadn't completely lost it, a trip to the original location relieved my fears. Sadly, I don't think anyone will ever be able to get a pizza in this area that would make them understand why Buddy's became famous. Having been to my "safe" Buddy's locations a number of times over the past 2 years, I am convinced that Buddy's dreams of expansion have finally killed the pizza that earned them the gold standard. All the locations I have tried, including the original now produce a pizza more gelatinous and mushy than anything else. I tried repeatedly to discuss this with store managers and the district manager but to no avail. I have reluctantly given up on Buddy's because it no longer is Buddy's. read more

If you haven't been to the original location, you haven't been to Buddy's. I love the simplicity of the red/white checkerboard tablecloths and the truly diverse crowd. It is very unassuming and very welcoming. Being from Detroit, I may have a soft spot for this place, but it's super solid pizza. Have you noticed the recent articles about "Detroit" style pizza? What makes this pizza unique, and my favorite, is how they layer the goods. Cheese on top of the crust, followed by toppings and two strips of sauce. And the best part? The corners! Each pizza is baked in a rectangular pan (not as thick as Sicilian) leaving a yummy crunchy yet chewy cheese crust that goes all the way to the edge of the pan. Read, no crust. It's all cheese. They only have two sizes. Large (8 square) or small (4 square). Over the years, whenever I go, my family and I order our own small so every piece is a corner piece. For us, that corner is gold! Another favorite is the salad. It doesn't get any more basic than iceberg lettuce, chickpeas, onion, tomato and croutons with their own house Italian/vinaigrette dressing. It comes in the classic wooden patchwork bowl and is extremely comforting. This could be because I grew up with it, but I still think it's great. Last year my dad discovered the oven-baked cheese and bacon fries which added to the gluttonous feast. The cherry on top is the Long Island Iced Tea. This is the ONLY time I will order a long island. One of the oldest pizza spot serving detroit style square pizza. Saw some documentary on youtube about detroit pizza spots and put it on my food list as this is considered one of the Nation's Best Pizza spot as per Food Network. Headed to this spot after 2 hr Detroit institute of art( DIA) trip. Don't throw away this DIA ticket as this will get you 4$Off on your 8 Square pizza at any Buddy's pizza location. Ordered 4 square Detroiter pizza instead of 8 square as we planned to try another pizza spot as well. The pizza was amazing especially the tomato basil sauce was so fresh and tasty. Crust needs to specially mentioned as it was so crisp. They took a while to get our order hence they took 50% on our pizza which is very sweet of them. Do I like Buddy's? Nope, I love them! I have eaten here twice in the past month. First time we got the Anitpasta salad, a Detroit Public TV and the Works. I didn't LOVE the Detroit Public TV so I went back to my two favorites: the Detroiter and the Works. Amazing pizzas! Buddy's has the best combination of crispy crust and amazing flavors. You are not chocking on cheese but you have a good amount, the crispy crust is the amazing and I can't get enough. Their salad is my absolute favorite with the crisp lettuce, chopped cheese and salami, and Italian dressing. Gave this place a try last night before heading to a Comedy Club in Royal Oak. This place is in a sketchy neighborhood but the parking lot is thankfully private. It was a Thursday at 6:00pm and the parking lot had a good amount of cars in it. We entered through the back and noticed the place is made up of two rooms, one with booths/tables and a bar, the other just a field of tables, not the most glamorous. You have zero privacy as there is no booths in the upper main portion. We were seated quickly and the waitress was patient with us while we decided what to order. As this was our first time here. We chose the Meatball App and the 8 slice pizza with 5 toppings, half and half. We noticed a couple of four slice pizzas coming out at other tables with pretty dark crusts and unhappy customers so we told the waitress who arranged to cook the pizza without burning it. Our Meatball App came out within 15 minutes and was a nice plate, though for $9 it seemed overpriced. The four average sized meatballs were not bad and the meat sauce (we had three sauce choices) was very good. The dry garlic bread was not that garlicky but by dipping it in the sauce it was better. Our 8 slice pizza came out within 30 minutes but it arrived cold being delivered by another staff member, plus there were no mushrooms on one half as we ordered. Cold pizza just isn't the same as hot pizza, and overall it really didn't seem worth the $21 they charge. One other reviewer said Jets makes a far better Detroit pizza which is more reasonably priced, and I have to totally agree with them. I agree with others, the pizza really seems to be missing something. It just tastes pretty plain, even with several toppings. Through the course of our poor pizza experience the waitress never checked in on us once to see how our food or drink was. She seemed more focused on wrapping cutlery and talking to other customers. I finally made a point to call her over and tell her about the condition of the pizza and she offered to make another one. We were in a rush at this point and had to make it to the comedy club, so we declined. The manager actually came over during our discussion, mentioned that the new ventilation system must have quickly cooled our pizza prematurely, and said she would adjust our pizza cost by 50%. read more

As a New Yorker you're kinda not supposed to admit that pizza can be good in other parts of the country, but I really liked this place. The Detroit style in general is great, but this is the best one we tried. Much more manageable than Chicago style, for instance, which just does not jibe with my New York sensibilities. If you are looking for a place to take a group, may I suggest the Original Buddy's at 6 Mile & Conant. I have actually taken 2 groups there in the last 2 months and have had a GREAT TIME and wonderful experience each time. If you are headed downtown, it is not far off I-75 and would make a perfect lunch or dinner spot. The area is admittedly a lil seedy, but not only does it have THE BEST pizza, it also has a rich and interesting history (and a guarded lot). For adults/seniors, I can bet they haven't been there in years and would love the reminiscent feel of the place. It is awesome. The staff is very helpful. We were in our own private room (probably seats about 30-40 ppl), which just happens to be attached to an outdoor bocci court. It was fun to play while we waited for our pizza and antipasto salad to come out. If a manager is easily accessible, ask him to give the group a quick history of the restaurant (printed on the menu), but they will show you the hole they used to sneak booze in during prohibition....little known fact!! Instead of trying to personalize an order for each individual, we ordered an antipasto for each table and several of their most popular pizzas. The only problem was deciding which pizza to try! We found that figuring 2 pieces per person was more than enough and let us have quite a variety of toppings (the Detroiter was a personal favorite...yum!). First of all let me tell you I love Buddys and have been a loyal customer for years however this last experience with the staff at the Conant location was a nightmare. I ordered through their budget app 3 pizzas 1 Super 6 Mile, 1 Vegan create your own, and 1 cheese pizza. I recieved 1 Super and 2 cheese pizzas I paid a total of about $75.00 including tip. When I called to inform them of.ther error the manager Brandon was unyielding in his defense that the order was placed incorrectly. It's a shame that Buddys treats thei loyal customers with such disregard. Their subpar online application does not show you your order at the end so that you can make corrections if need be. Do better Buddys. For anyone tbat wants a good pizza.cheaper Marco's pizza has comparable tasting pizza for half the price of Buddy's pizza. I first went to Buddy's on the recommendation of a coworker while travelling to Detroit (at the time thinking, "What the hell is Detroit Style Pizza?") - then it was so good that I came back a second time and brought my wife when she was in town as well! Obviously, my favorite item to order here is their traditional Pizza. Every time that I've been to Buddy's the wait was never super long and the food was fantastic. I also highly recommend their cheesy garlic bread. The place has adequate parking and is easily accessible from the highway. First off everyone is is laid back and seem to be about the business of pizza. They had a pretty busy outdoor setup for pickups. Indoor is nothing fancy and seemed close knit, we felt safe regarding Covid and spaced out. Server in bar area, Jackey was super friendly and made us feeled welcomed. No long wait and the pizza came. Look yummy and was even better tasting!! The crust, which my husband reminded me that I typically don't eat on pizza, was crisp and buttery. We devoured our pizza! The meats were chopped perfectly and seasoning was delicious. We only ate 2-3 slices each & were stuffed. Jackey brought us a sample Vernor's float that was so good but we were too stuffed to finish. The surrounding neighborhood is a ghetto, exercise caution--nav software will try to send you onto short but nasty side streets. Fenced lot with private security. Inside is an old fashioned multi level pizza place and bar. Wider than normal range of side dishes/burgers/pastas, plus the expected Detroit style pizzas and antipasto salads. Had a great time for our first time to Buddy's. Food was great - we over ordered to sample as much as we could. Pizzas, meatball appetizer, minestrone soup (thicker kind which I prefer), chicken tenders, cream puff sundae were yummy. Our waitress, Malaika, was wonderful - sweet, efficient, friendly, professional - she made our experience even more enjoyable. Cute indoor decor. Will make a point to come back. The place is kind of in the middle of nowhere, in a bit of a rundown area, but Buddy's is like a bright shining and very welcome beacon among all the asphalt and brick of the neighborhood. When you pull up the smell hits you right away and you know you're in for something special. They have a secure parking lot and a picture postcard mural on the building and great door security. We ordered a "Detroit Public TV" (which they describe as: The ultimate pepperoni pizza! Original pepperoni under our Motor City cheese blend and our Old World pepperoni on top.) and it was incredible. Even though all this happened a few months ago I can still smell it now, like a sense memory. The do Detroit style pizza (what else, I mean they invented it) at Buddy's: rectangular, deep dish with sauce so zesty and the cheese is crispy on the bottom and edges that nothing else can compare, and like I said, I love pizza. all kinds of pizza, and this might be my all-time favorite. Buddy's is an experience you shouldn't miss. Go on a world pizza tour and Buddy's will be in your top 5, guaranteed. Month's later you'll be daydreaming of how you might pick up and relocate to The D: I mean, it's a cool place after all. Definitely coming up. Lots to do.
