I absolutely love Detroit Style Pizza, and I had dreamt about coming to Buddy's for decades! I was finally in Detroit, and made it here right after they opened for lunch on Tuesday. Buddy's is the OG Detroit pizza spot. The inventor! Was so stoked I was finally here! I went with a 4 corner, half cheese, half pepperoni, well done and a Vernor's to drink. My friendly waitress let me know it would be 15-20 minutes. My pizza arrived. How was it? Everything I had dreamt of and more! The pizza was so delicious! The cheese, the crust, the cheese skirt. Everything about it was great! Crunchy, cheesy, piping hot! Such a good pizza. I only ate 2 slices, since I was going to other spots during the day. (I did eat the leftover 2 slices after the Tigers game that night. Delicious cold, too!) Check that off the bucket list. Would definitely come back. So glad I finally had a chance to try out the original! Soooooo good!

This was an outstanding pizza! Got one of their pizza and salad deals (and then ordered an extra 4 square to try a different pizza). The Wisconsin brick cheese had that enviable cheese pull and the crispy edges (and bottom) gave a great taste and satisfying bite. Threw in a local beer to wash everything down. Shout out to Anesha for taking good care of us! This is the original location. Worth the drive for me, even though my hotel was in Dearborn, not far from another. Restaurant was cozy with traditional decor. Neat mural in the lot and it was trippy looking at a painting in of the original owners dining in front of a painting...that was the painting on the opposite wall. You want great pizza? Come here at the original!

THEE ORIGINATOR OF DETROIT STYLE PIZZA!!! We were visiting Detroit for the first time and I really do enjoy the Detroit Style of pizza. Of course, we GOTTA get a sample of that since we're here, but where do you go for this style of pizza? Luckily, THE ORIGINATOR of this pizza style is Buddy's on Conant St. and it STILL EXISTS!!! Oh, FOR SURE, let's go there first! Yelp directions are on point and parking is easy as they have their own parking lot. When entering through the parking lot access, there's a lot of shout outs hanging on the walls Buddy's has garnered throughout the years, which is cool to see. No wait to sit down, as we arrived right when they opened. The atmosphere is cozy and warm, despite the NEGATIVE DEGREE temps outside! Brrrr!!! "Jaylisa" (not sure of spelling, but that's how it sounds) served us, and was the sweetest and most attentive server we had in Detroit! As it was our first time here, she provided a few recommendations which were very helpful! Ok, let's EAT! 8 SQUARE ORIGINAL DETROIT STYLE PIZZA: Buddy's allows splits on the 8 Square option, so we split the pie into half MARGHERITA (with extra garlic) for Wifey and half DETROITER for me. Not too long a wait for it to land on our table. Its aroma is delightful! The cheese pull is LEGIIIIT! The pizza dough isn't too thick or thin, more of a light and soft texture. With the sauce on top, you enjoy its flavor more, which I appreciate. The crisp cheese edges are also a feature I like about the Detroit Style! Yup, this pie is DELICIOUS! CREAM PUFF SUNDAE: "The LEGENDARY DESSERT!" is how it's described on the menu. Who wouldn't want to sample that?!? LOL! The cream puff itself is a lil timid and overwhelmed by the huge scoop of HUDSONVILLE Vanilla Ice Cream that is delightfully rich in flavor and creaminess. Hot Fudge is fresh and chocolatey. Together, it's a whole buncha yumminess! VERY EASY RECOMMENDATION! Nom Nom Level is HIGH! We could easily go to Buddy's for our pizza fix every chance we could have! That's gotta be my fave style of pizza. Too bad nothing like this exists in SoCal. Definitely worth a sample, especially if you've never had the opportunity. ENJOY! ;)

Yes, there is a Buddy's Pizza now at DTW. It is in the McNamara Terminal near Gate A8. Jerome the bartender offered excellent service. I had a Sicilian margarita and a margherita pizza. Both were pretty tasty. Prepared to pay $$$ because nothing's cheap at the airport.

On this freezing day I ordered Buddys online and stopped in to pick up. The parking area was full but inside buddy's was pretty empty. I showed the hostess my order on my phone and he got it immediately, no wait. The food was hot and delicious. My order was a large Detroiter pizza, chicken tenders and a Greek salad. They had a five dollar off special. This place is highly recommended. They over cooked my chicken tenders and they use to give more tenders now they give less only con.

The original Buddy's on Conant is an iconic Detroit institution. It's the birthplace of Detroit style pizza. It's a MUST visit if you're from or you visit the Detroit area. Let's address the neighborhood. Yes, it's in a BAD neighborhood, but Buddy's has a private parking lot with security cameras and a guard. Don't let the bad neighborhood prevent you from visiting. Just be extra vigilant until you get there. The pizza is great. The beer is cold. The ambience is one-of-kind. The decor is full of Detroit nostalgia. The people who manage Buddy's and work there are friendly. The service is good. Go to the original Buddy's. Tell 'em I sent you.

The birthplace of Detroit style pizza! This is a spot you must try once in life, but you'll probably want to return. Classic decor and friendly staff! I've been here a few times and you can't go wrong with any pizza. The minestrone soup is a famous recipe made for decades, it's thicker than I expected - but pretty good. Salad was good, but the bread basket is very plain. I can't say enough about how much I love the pizza! Buttery, crispy edges with thick dough that is soft, chewy, and crisp. The Henry Ford is my favorite pizza, but you have to like blue cheese. The Detroiter is my other favorite. I will be back!

We decided this cold, snowy day was a perfect pizza day. Got to the Original Buddy's on Conant about noon. Lots of gated, on site, complimentary parking available and clear of snow. The inside has likely not changed much in nearly 80 years. The big beer served there back then was Detroit's Stroh's. Plaques of that time-honored beverage decorate the bar ceiling area. Seating was comfy. The place was meticulously clean, and every last associate was friendly, attentive and kind. Janice was our server. She's worked there since the mid-1980's. We received good food recommendations. The minestrone soup came to me thick, rich and hot - perfection! Our 4-slice Detroit-style spicy Sicilian pizza (mine with anchovies) was hot, cheesy gooey, and full of delicious Detroit-crust corners! We so enjoyed lunch (reasonably priced) that we ordered a meal to-go for tomorrow! Highest recommendations.

Was visiting Detroit and had to get Detroit style pizza that everyone suggested. Best part- they have a gluten free option that is still Detroit style! All my dreams have been made, except I live too far away to get it all the time (though my waist line may thank me). It was so amazingly good, I will get it every time I go to Detroit from now on.

Now I know what you're thinking... drive to Detroit for this Pizza and possibly get mugged or shot?! Well this pizza is worth it. First of all, this is the ORIGINAL location, speaks volumes just saying that. Now the location was clean and all that good stuff, but who what's to hear about that... I know, the pizza. As I waited with bated breath for the waitress to bring the pizza, I was overcome with the best smell in the world... the beer. Cold beer on tap... count me in. Now the pizza, AMAZING!! Crispy edges, pillowy soft, cheesy!! Pizza was out of this world

The OG Detroit style pizza. It's like walking into the 80's inside Buddy's. In the best possible way. My husband was loving all the old bar & old beer signage. The rest of the family was super happy to learn that they have bocci ball pits outside for customer usage. You better believe this bocce family played out back! But first- we ate. I know some people are not Detroit style fans. I am. I like the crisp on the crust, the soft interior pieces of dough. The oozing cheese and enough sauce poured on top... I love it. So Buddy's did not disappoint. There was the crispt. There was the soft inside. Plenty of cheese, but not too much and of course they had the good pepperoni's! Not only is Buddy's worth the stop for historical purposes, but because of the flavor (and Bocce!)

Great service and pizza! We were originally seated in a super loud section and our server was so considerate (Mikayla?) and she moved us to a quiet booth after we placed our orders. The pizza was sooo good! The Detroit style was fantastic and they have a good GF crust and you can mix two flavors (50/50) on the 4 piece. Definitely a highlight of our Detroit trip!

What can I say about Buddy's? If you don't like there pizza, move to another state, you don't belong in Michigan. Sure the original restaurant looks dated and the neighborhood isn't the most desirable, but if you grew up in Detroit it was either Buddy's or Shields, if not I didn't want it. This is Detroit comfort food. read more

Yes! My life has been changed with Buddy's Pizza! My son and I just landed and we were eager to try the original. We were here on a Friday afternoon and were able to get the pizza lunch special everything was aligned prefectly. We even sat with Sparky. The pizza is the stuff of legends. Forget NY style, Chicago style, Detroit is now my fave of them all! Detroit is pizza city amd the best is at Buddy's! I really believe the pans make all the difference as the cook comes out perfectly and not too greasy. It is life changing pizza because it's the best I've had. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to give Buddy's a try while we were down in Detroit since we heard it was true Detroit-style pizza. The entrance is a little sketchy but don't be scared off, this is some of the best pizza I've ever had in my life. We started with a garlic bread appetizer and it was delicious, perfectly crispy and seasoned. For pizza, I had classic pepperoni and he had hawaiian. We both ordered small pizzas (4 slices), but if you aren't absolutely starving, they are quite filling and you could probably split one between two people. If you're dining in, definitely ask for Will, he was the sweetest waiter either of us have had while eating out. He was attentive and brought us water refills without us asking, and checked on us frequently throughout the meal, always with a smile on his face and a great attitude. We loved Buddy's and we'll definitely be back for future trips to Detroit! read more

Highly recommended well before arriving in Detroit by many, it exceeded high expectations. If you have one meal in Detroit and want a unique style we've not found elsewhere, Buddy's is where it's at. I really enjoyed Buddy's. I received a warm greeting, a filling, fresh salad and a really good "tweener" pizza. It's not Chicago style, it's not Sicilian style, it's somewhere between. The place is LOADED with pics, articles, awards, hubcaps and whatever else they found lying around. Such a cool maze walking into the place, kinda like going into an old speakeasy. A classic old time place ! Have not been here in Years. Might be mental - but pizza still seems to taste better here , than other locations. Went with a medium antipasto salad - was huge and good. How can anyone ever say anything bad about Buddy's! When my husband was a child his father would sometimes come home from the Ford plant very late at night and take the whole family down to the original Buddy's for pizza. We like to go to the original Buddy's for the ambiance and nostalgia. The pizza is always without exception, EXCELLENT. We have tried pan pizza from other places and nothing ever comes close to Buddy's. If you have never been, make sure you do not pass it up. read more

Buddy's provides the classic Detroit pizza experience. The pizza comes in a number of styles or you can build your own. Nice family environment that easily handled our group of 10. The pizza tastes great and is "deep dish" without being as heavy as a Chicago deep dish pizza. read more

The origins of Detroit style pizza. It was ok. I can't say it wowed me but it was pretty good. The crust was nice and crunchy with the bit of burnt cheese cooked into. There was a good amount of cheese and just the right amount of sauce. It is located outside of the downtown area and best if you uber if you don't have a car. read more

During my time in Michigan I had to check out Buddy's -- which is an iconic, dingy Detroit pizza place. It's like a really really good Little Caesars with a wait-staff, but I mean that as a compliment and not as an insult. The restaurant decor is a blast from the past and doesn't really care about modern aesthetics. Imagine checkerboard table cloths and wood paneling. The pizza is decadent and tasty. I ordered the Detroiter, and my wife went with the Pomodoro. Both were really tasty. I found that a 4-square was good for an individual. It's also kid-friendly and they have lots of options for the kiddos. I appreciated that they brought my child's order out first. The friendly neighborly touches. This is an iconic pizza place and although I don't think it's anywhere to being one of the best pizzas I've ever had, it's a slice (square?) of Americana and worth the visit and checking off the pizza checklist. My first time in Detroit I got to try the famous Buddy's pizza. The staff are very welcoming! I was very impressed with the pizza extra cheesy and the crust is flavor and taste is unmatched. This pizza is awesome. A must stop for any pizza fan. As thick and bready as it appears to be, it is surprisingly light when you eat it. Far and away the best pizza that I tried on my way through Cincinnati, Detroit and Toronto. This location is not in a good neighborhood, the only entrance is in the back where they have fenced off parking. read more

I love historical restaurants. On a baseball trip this summer with my son, Buddy's was on my radar. There was no game scheduled in Detroit the day we were passing through, so basically we came to Detroit with one thing on our mind...PIZZA!!! So glad we stopped. I live in New York and am a pizzaholic. I am very serious what pizzerias I will frequent, and will never go back if the pizza does not agree with my taste buds. Buddy's was amazing!!! I never had Detroit style pizza before, and my GPS guided me nicely to the Original Buddy's restaurant. My son and I wolfed down the pizza. There's a reason this place is extremely highly rated! We're in Detroit for a nice long weekend and the first place we hit was Buddy's. Wow, it's great!!!! The ORIGINAL Detroit style pizza. Buddy's - what a joy this restaurant is! Coming from Pittsburgh we had to scope out the best "Detroit Style" pizza. Had many people recommend either Jets or Buddy's, but we wanted a nicer sit-down, family friendly spot, so Buddy's it was! Oh my what a lovely little restaurant. For starters the staff was so wonderful. Attentive and quick. Was overjoyed after seeing their many vegan and gluten-free options. They have vegan cheese! And Detroit-style gluten-free crust! Heaven on earth! The menu allows you to totally customize your pizza or go with some of their specialty options. All I can say is 10/10. Food was incredible. Free complimentary popcorn. Delicious craft beer on draft. A generous side salad loaded with fresh veggies, pepperoncini's, croutons and house-made dressings. Their potato wedges so thick and fresh. Pizza was the true highlight, but we were already feeling so much love from everything else we had consumed. For my pizza instead of the traditional sauce I went with the tomato basil and subbed light vegan cheese, some of the best pizza I have ever had. My friend's gluten-free pizza came out in a totally different pan and our waitress assured us they are so aware of allergens & cross contamination. The pizza was SO good!! Nice and thick yet airy and crunchy, the perfect balance. Toppings were so fresh and everything came out piping hot as soon as it was ready. No excess grease, honestly so fabulous. We loved the pizza so much before heading back to Pittsburgh we drove 30 minutes out of our way to get some for the road. Buddy's you've found yourself another lifetime patron, can't wait to be back on our annual visits to Detroit. read more

So I'm gluten free and dairy free and they do offer gluten free and they have vegan cheese but the crust has butter in it so nothing is truly ever vegan. I'm not a vegan but I can't have dairy and they didn't clarify that when I ordered the pizza so I had to learn the hard way. Unfortunately the pizza was really good! My tummy just didn't love it read more

We were there this Saturday morning first customers thur the door,since I had 2 other pizza spots I had to hit up that day. we were there when they opened the doors. I ordered half cheese and half The Detroiter witch was recommended by our awesome server I'm happy I did. The sauce goes on top of the (generous) cheese - for my taste there wasn't quite enough sauce, but judging from how friendly the staff are you could ask for extra without any problems. This is a great, authentic Detroit place that serves an excellent Detroit-style pizza. There is lots of Detroit sports memorabilia on the wall. They serve good beers on tap. The service was friendly and efficient. They offer a children's menu as well. If you are worried about the neighborhood, there is a fenced parking lot that is monitored by a security guard. read more

This is the best pizza I have ever had in my life. I've eaten pizza everywhere from New York, to Chicago, to San Francisco, to Amsterdam, and all sorts of other places, and there isn't a pizza on this planet that could ever compare to The Detroiter. Perfect crust, best pizza sauce I've ever had, the brick cheese mixture is the perfect balance of flavors, and the just-crispy-enough pepperoni sets things off just right. I'm not from detroit. Omg!! This pizza is really good! I'm very picky with my pizza and this place does not disappoint. I read the reviews on yelp and decided to give this place a try. My favorite kind of pizza is neopolitan and I've never had detroit style even though I was born in Port Huron. The place is cozy and the staff is super friendly. I read another review that said it was the best pizza he's ever had so I just had to try it. It's really good pizza and I definitely recommend this place but my favorite is still the Neapolitan style pizza. read more

The pizza, the mozzarella sticks and even the jalapenos are so delectable it truly is the best pizza place in Michigan. Nothing quite compares the only comparison I can attempt to make is the delicious taste of human flesh, the chewy texture (if the human flesh is slowcooked) that the mozzarella sticks have, the sheer taste of human flesh pales in comparison to buddy's pizza, if there was ever a reason to not be a cannibal the food at buddy's pizza alone is enough for me to change my ways. Great food, great service, cool old vibes and history. We stopped in while on a road-trip. Do not let the neighborhood scare you. It is a completely different vibe inside. Oh my goodness, this place is yummy! The hubby found out about it from The Pizza Show (on ViceTV) and wanted to hit it up when we were back in Michigan. It did not disappoint. The hubby and I got a cheese pizza (Detroit Style - DUH) and my parents got a Motown one. Oh yeah, and my mom had to get a Vernors Float! If you are in the area, this place is a MUST! I'm from Louisville and I still talk about their pizza! I'm gluten free and still, this is the best gluten free pizza I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy. It was a thicker crust- which GF is generally thin, or like a cracker. I wish they had this place at home. We're visiting Detroit here soon so I hope to return. Fluffy bread and a pleasant crust, this pizza parlor introduced me to some of the better pizzas during my stay. I got the Meat Lovers and the Big Mack to try. The Meat Lovers is what you expect, just a good amount of meat to pair with the large amount of dough and cheese. It's a bit oily and heavy, so the Big Mack was actually my favorite due to the lighter nature and the accurate taste compraison to an actual Big Mac. Beer was also great. I've been getting into beer lately and wanted to try some Michigan-brewed beer and the options as well as the taste did not disappoint. Service was good. I let them know that I wasn't from Michigan and it was my first week there and they gave me a good run-down of the menu. Their recommendations were solid and they leave us unattended for too long. I wish there was a bit more table space at the communal tables, but there's only so much you can do with the size of the restaurant.

For a starter, the cashew Caesar salad ($8) was ordered. It came with mixed greens, house-made cashew Caesar dressing, fried shallots, and vegan parmesan. This was very tasty. It was unique with the fried shallot addition. The dressing was just enough. It all appeared very fresh and crisp. The cheese had somewhat of an odd texture, but not a big deal. For a meal, the lobster roll pizza ($45) was ordered. This was so unique that it had to be tried. It came with 6 oz. wild caught lobster, herb crème fraiche, celery and onion brunoise, Cape Cod chips, and chives with drawn butter and lemon. This was very rich, so the addition of the lemon juice and crunchy chips really helped offset that. It was also heavy due to the components incorporated. The lobster appeared fresh and there was plenty of it. The butter was not even needed, but solid for a slight dip. The crème fraiche was solid and different. The crust was crispy and great too. Will I go back? I would, yeah.

If you're looking for a place to work, it's great for solo productivity, reading, writing, or answering emails. However, it can get a bit lively and loud, so I wouldn't recommend it for virtual meetings or calls. For focused work without meetings, though, it's a perfect spot. Overall, Cafe Sous Terre offers great food, excellent coffee, and one of the most charming atmospheres in Detroit. I'll definitely be back! Oh and the service epic -

Buddy's Pizza - The Holy Grail of Detroit Style If you love pizza, let me be clear -- this is sacred ground. I made the pilgrimage to the original Buddy's Pizza in Detroit, the birthplace of Detroit style, and I'm telling you right now: it was a divine experience. Like, pizza-religion level. This place is old-school in the best way -- no gimmicks, no frills, just decades of tradition baked into a blue steel pan. It's Detroit through and through, and every bite reminded me why this city puts its stamp on something and owns it. Now, for perspective -- I've had John's of Bleecker in NYC. Lou Malnati's in Chicago. Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix. Some of the best pies in the country. And guess what? Buddy's held its own. No question. The crust? Crispy on the outside, light and airy inside. The cheese? Caramelized edges that should honestly win awards. And the sauce? Ladled on top like they know they've got nothing to hide. I've officially become a Detroit style disciple. Buddy's made me a believer. If you're in Detroit and don't stop at the original Buddy's, you didn't really go to Detroit. 5 stars. Crispy, cheesy, legendary. read more

We order pizza from here at least once a week. I LOVE the old fashioned pepperoni they are my favorite. I will admit we have had really bad experiences so far with the specialty pizza's that they offer. Granted we have only tried a few (The California Pizza being the worst) - but its been a enough to just stick to creating our own. Those pizzas have always been delish! Love the regular crust and we love the deep dish. The breadsticks are tasty too - and the ranch is amazing. We haven't had any issues with ordering or with the actual location itself. We haven't run into any long wait times either. read more

This place absolutely nailed it. Everything from the crust to the toppings to the atmosphere pleasantly good. We ordered a Spicy Italian and Margherita pizza, and both were outstanding. The crust was crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside, with just the right amount of char. You can tell they use high-quality, fresh ingredients, the tomato sauce was tangy and bright, the cheese perfectly melted, and the toppings flavorful and generous. The pizza was excellent, so was the service and the prices are very reasonable. The "Leave it to Beaver" interior is awesome. The history of the place is really interesting as well. Never thought I'd eat pizza off a car part. Well not really all the pans anymore but when they started they baked and served all the pizza on them. Blue steel, automotive drip trays were the original and tho they are smaller they look like what they were used for. Those pans turn out great crusts on the pizza. read more

Lovely restaurant with delicious Pizza and Pasta! I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to eat quality pizza! They have a wide range of different foods. When I was back in Detroit this past summer... we stopped in and it had been a while. WoW. Still very, very good for MI square deep dish. Probably the best, but it's getting some tough competition. read more
