We had an absolutely terrible experience with Budget on our recent vacation. We picked up our rental car (Full sized SUV #1) on the first day of our 9-day vacation driving through the Rocky Mountains to Moab, Utah from the Denver Airport Budget rental location. After connecting our phones to the car ~2 hours into our trip we realized the sun roof was stuck open and the car alerted us to an unresolved safety recall involving the brakes that fail without warning (see image below). Driving my family (husband, 3year old, & 11month old) through the Rocky Mountains with the potential for brake failure due to negligence was unacceptable. Budget customer service advised us to drive to the nearest Budget location to immediately switch out SUV#1. The customer service agent at the time offered us 3 days off of our rental to make up for the inconvenience. After going to 2 smaller Budget locations we were advised to return to the Airport Budget 2hr away. The line at the counter was an additional 2 hour wait to get the car switched. The desk agent was apologetic and offered an additional day off of the rental (now 4 days off total). We got a different car (Full size SUV #2), and set off. We immediately noted that the car smelled strongly of smoke, but at this point we had lost a day of our vacation and did not want to wait another 2h in line for something that air fresheners could fix. By this time, it was time to check into our accommodations for the night and get dinner for our kids. First day of our vacation lost to Budget safety issues. But we had thought Budget made it right by taking 3 days off for putting us in a broken unsafe car and 1 additional day off for losing the day (in total 4 days off total at this point) The next day, SUV#2 had trouble starting and a message popped up on the dashboard that said "Charging System Service Soon" (see photo below). A Google search of this message informed us that this message indicated the battery might die soon (within a few days). Not wanting to be stranded we went through another 5 hours of travel and lines to get the SUV#3. The desk agent was again very apologetic and offered an additional day off of our stay (now 5 days total). After everything was switched over to SUV#3 and we were finally on our way we had lost 2 days of vacation to poorly managed vehicle inventory maintenance. Of note SUV#3 that was functional except for the key fob battery which needed replacement per the dash indicator but 5 days off our rental and low risk to family safety smoothed things over - or so we thought (in the end Budget would only honor 3 of the 5 days promised). We have called at least 10 times to and are being told that they only see records of the first offer of 3 days, but nothing about the 2 additional days that were offered by the desk agents. And since there is no way to actually talk to the people at the Denver airport site (the number routes you to a call center), there seems to be no way that we can get this resolved. One telephone agent said that they would "elevate this issue to be investigated further" but the next agent we spoke to said that there was no such process for elevating issues for investigation. Please learn from our experience that you cannot count on receiving a safe or correctly maintained vehicle from Budget and, if you are promised anything from Budget agents, make sure you can confirm that they document to your account any promises they make (referenced by your drivers license number and/or phone number). We advise anyone renting cars from Budget to connect their cell phone to the vehicle and allow the vehicle to connect to the Internet - from there navigate through the settings menu to look and see if the vehicle has any unresolved safety issues. It can take up to 1.5 hours for the vehicle to alert you to any unresolved safety issues. read more

Have never waited this long for a rental. It was over 1.5hr to get a car and for part of it I had to wait in the blaring sun. People did not listens to me as I was trying to ask questions. Tried calling the location multiple times to find out if I could leave my personal vehicle since this was the only location that had a car the size I needed. Learned I couldn't leave my car and I would need to pay to park in a lot. I would give 0 stars if I could. Was also charged incorrectly and will probably need to spend two more hours to get that fixed. read more

The Budget Desk at DIA is just chaotic, I can't tell if this is just a Denver International thing or this Budget specifically. The airport and the rental desk were woefully unprepared to handle the large influx of delayed passengers. Long lines and no FastBreak led to an already extended travel period due to storm delays, something that is supposedly a daily occurrence here. So the question becomes is the mgmt incompetent or do they just not care. In their defense, the individual agents did their best to move things along and move quickly, but I blame the mgmt and leadership for the lack of process and preparedness. The car itself was sub-par. I opened the center console to find a discarded and dried up drink cup from Sonics... no clue how long that had been there. The rear driver-side wheel had some slow leak requiring daily pump up. I would have brought the car back, but my sked in the area did not afford me sufficient time to make the haul back to DIA and deal with that airport's general chaos. The return was the most chaotic experience. The return lanes were completely filled. The return agent did manage to stack me in but in the process was having a heated yelling match with someone else, maybe a customer? He was nice enough to me but still pretty disturbing. Be careful renting with Budget. I've always rented from Budget for personal and work trips but I will no longer support their company. You can read my story below but to sum it up, I am being accused of damaging their tire and they invoiced me for the tire service (air and balance) and I did not damage the tire. So for over $700 I spent with Budget in April alone I'm treated poorly over a $81.51 dollar charge. Which I would gladly pay if they would rightfully show me the damage I did. I did a 7 day rental with a Toyota 4Runner. The tire pressure was low in the rear passenger tire. When the low tire pressure sensor came on I stopped and filled it with air at a gas station and the tire held air the rest of the duration of my rental. When I returned the vehicle I told the guy about it. There was no visible damage to the tire. The guy at drop off acknowledged what I said and seemed fine with everything. Over 3 weeks later I received a bill / invoice for a tire rebalance, air, and air pressure reset for their tire. There is no line item on the invoice for repair to physical damage to the tire. I tried asking for proof of the damage to the tire, and I asked for the vehicle inspection report before I rented and after I returned and Budget says they don't have that to provide. Therefore I am supposed to pay for service to the tire but they can't tell me how I actually damaged the tire. I didn't hit anything while I had the vehicle. It appears to me that the tire had a slow leak somehow. To top everything off, their customer service email case management system unorganized and I received two replies from two separate employees but neither of them answered my request or addressed my concerns. Then I called the customer service line. The First Lady put me on a "silent" hold which ended up being disconnected after a few minutes. That was inconvenient but I chalked it up as an accident. The second person I talked to was eventually rude to me. He asked me if I had taken pictures of the tire or the low pressure gauge in the dash. No was my response. He put me on hold with jazz music for some time so he could review my case emails and documents. Then when he got back on the line and said that they "don't have the inspection reports to provide" I asked him "how can I be responsible to pay for damage that you can't provide evidence for". Then he started taking a condescending tone with me asking the same questions about taking pictures of anything. After I told him I was upset he told me there is no manager available for me. Again, I advise be careful renting with Budget. Call their roadside immediately if any sensor goes off. Don't be an adult and fill it with air yourself because there is an underlying problem with the vehicle that you will be charged for. I rented a car at Budget at the Denver Airport. The reservation was prepaid for one day ( so I thought ) I said I would pick up the car at noon and bring it back at 5am. I actually picked it up around 12:30 and brought it back at 5:14 am. They originally charged me $16.99 for fuel even though the receipt stated full tank out and full tank in. That supposedly has been waived, but they also charged me $5.00 for a late fee since it was 14 minutes beyond when I said I would return it. Most rentals charge by the day and certainly don't charge if you are 14 minutes late. DO NOT ever us this company as they are thieves. read more

TL;DR: After pre-paying for a rental car online, their website immediately increased the expected total by almost $400 in the receipt. Per their terms, now I'll be on the hook for a $50 cancellation fee. Their system hung up on me when I tried to call someone to fix it. Don't risk this headache. Rent elsewhere. Longer version: I purchased a two-night/three-day fully pre-paid car rental online for $256.62. After hitting "paid," that $256.62 suddenly was no longer the total - it shot up to an estimated total of $623.84. This was the ONLY place this number had been indicated - only AFTER I paid. Now, if I try to cancel, it'll charge ME a $50 cancellation for their (in my opinion) fraudulent behavior. I tried calling their system to get this worked out, only for it to tell me that they don't have anyone available, so it hung up on me. I've filed a complaint with the BBB. The budget clerk was awful and misleading!! After a 30-45minute wait in line, at the counter the clerk mumbled through asking me about insurance - instead of asking if I wanted it, he was asking if I wanted the upgraded version. I said no and - cha-ching - insurance charges added to every day of my rental. Added roadside assistance without even asking me if I wanted it. When I asked why I saw $400 in extra charges on my screen, he said that was actually the only charges applied against my pre-paid $550. When I said "Oh so my charges aren't even the total of my prepayment?" he said "yes that's correct" That was not correct. When we went out to the lot, the first car we were offered had no key. The second car we were offered had a malfunctioning seatbelt. When I said I refused to drive a passenger who could not have a working seatbelt, the lot attendant seemed annoyed that we weren't going to accept an unsafe vehicle. Finally, we were given a car that had not been cleaned whatsoever. Upon return, I have an extra $400 added to my bill. Their customer service keeps responding that I signed, so they can charge me for it, no matter how many times I tell them that I was lied to! Horrible Experience with Budget Rent a Car - Never Again! I just had one of the worst experiences ever with Budget Rent a Car, and I feel compelled to share it so others can avoid the same nightmare. I booked a rental through Rentcars.com, which ended up being with Budget. When I got to Denver Airport to pick up my car, the guy at the counter was more interested in his phone than helping me. I tried to be friendly, asking him how his day was going, but he completely ignored me until I made a comment about my own day. Only then did he apologize and start helping me, but it was clear he didn't care. He asked for my ID and credit card, and then things got worse. He looked confused and kept asking for my details over and over. After wasting 10 to 15 minutes, he went to find a supervisor. Meanwhile, other people who arrived after me were getting their cars and leaving. I was getting more and more frustrated just standing there. When the manager finally showed up, he told me there was an issue with my reservation because I booked through an international website. He said I needed a Brazilian driver's license to get the rate I was given, which was never mentioned anywhere in my booking confirmation. I had even called the day before to confirm everything and was told there were no problems. I had no choice but to cancel my original reservation and rebook directly through Budget. Then you go outside and wait about her 30 minutes for them to find a car for you. I asked for assistance with the Bluetooth and as I was turning it on on my phone the guy said he had to go help someone else and he'd be back. He never came back so I had no overview of anything about the car or where to find the exit gate. After finding it that took about 15 minutes just to get out. Upon return it was 5am and many cars were there but not 1 employee so everyone was just leaving the keys in the front seat and leaving the car there, so to get on the shuttle. It seems like this location could use better management and a much better work flow, and customer service skills. The guy who checked me out when I got the car never made eye contact and when I asked a question he even turned away to talk to another employee and never answered my question. This is the worst car rental place ever! I travel a lot and have never experienced such a terrible experience. I reserved a jeep and when I arrived to pick up the vehicle, the representative told me they only have 4 vehicles left and offered an EV truck or a 7 passenger van (I had two people..). We ended up taking the EV truck which turned into a nightmare. The truck had a 38% charge and was filthy! We spent the half the next day trying to find charging stations and spent hours charging it! Then we got caught into a rain storm and the driver windshield wipers didn't work! I called customer service and was transferred to road side service instead of hearing my concerns. At this point we were so fed up we spent more of our vacation time to drive 40 mins back to Budget to try to exchange the vehicle. When I showed up on a Thursday night at around 11:30pm, there was a really long line to pick up a car. There were about four people working. I waited about 45 minutes. The first car I was given was a Jeep Compass. When I got into the car and tried starting it, it says no key fob found. There was no key in the car. I left my stuff in the car and went back to the agent to let her know. She gives me a Honda SUV. I get to that car and there is a car key, but the car won't start. I go back to the agent for this issue and she tells me she's going to give me an upgrade. Her upgrade was a supersized car because she says there are no more SUVs available. The car was huge. It was annoying having to climb up to the seat. I go back a third time and ask for something a little smaller and she just happens to have a Ford Explorer available. I was finally able to get a car and leave at almost 1am. This process took way longer than necessary. read more

If I could award zero stars to this rental service location, I would. We returned our rental car to this location in July, and it was purse chaos. Cars parked in every direction all over the parking lot, no one giving directions or instructing us how/where to leave our vehicle. We eventually found an employee and asked for help and he told us to park the car anywhere and leave the keys in it. We were nervous about this, but I was pregnant and we had a toddler and an insane amount of luggage, and a plane to catch. Two weeks later, the car still hadn't been marked as ever being returned, so we called Budget multiple times for updates. They "escalated our case," but of course we never heard anything after that. Eventually, the car was marked as being returned and we were charged for our expected bill, yay! But a few days later, we received a notice that we'd be charged a $125 cleaning fee. We knew we'd left the car in pristine condition, so we called Budget to inquire. They told us that there were no notes or photos on file to back up the fee, so it would be waived. A week or two after that, we received a collections notice for the $125 fee. We spent the next 30 days calling Budget every week to try and get the fee resolved. Each time, we were told that we needed to work directly with the Denver airport location (which never answers their own phones and directs them straight to central customer service, so it was completely impossible to get ahold of anyone there). At this point, it is September 26 and our collections notice has a due date of September 28 (this Sunday). During today's set of calls, I was told by customer service that I needed to call a specific number for assistance from a representative who'd already been working on this case. I tried that number, and it was out of service. I called Budget back (again, I called the Denver location number and was routed to central customer service) and this time was told to call Budget's Collections Department. The call went straight to voicemail. I am furious and at this point we'll need to try to dispute the claim with the collections agency directly, or just bend and pay the fee. We'll never book with Budget again, especially when flying in or out of Denver. This is some of the worst customer service I've never experienced. read more

We were told to go find our own car which was a confusing mess. We finally found a car and made our way out after about two hours total. I rented a car from Budget at Denver Airport and returned it to the Budget Downtown Denver location. The car was in poor condition and smelled of smoke. We informed Budget Denver Airport staff before leaving with the car, who promised to make note of the issues. We checked the car in at Budget Downtown Denver with no issues. However, over a week after returning the car we received a $250 cleaning charge for the smoke smell. Luckily, we had a video of us reporting the smell before leaving the Budget Denver airport location. While Budget customer care promptly refunded the $250 after I shared that we had the video, the lack of cleanliness and lack of follow-through at Budget Denver Airport is concerning. Despite friendly customer service I received when calling customer service to report this, I couldn't obtain the Budget Denver Airport manager's contact info, hence this review to caution others. read more

This is one of the worst car rental experience I've ever had. When we arrived, the line was extremely long and slow-moving, as rental agents were taking an excessive amount of time per customer. We waited in line for nearly 45 minutes. Once we were finally called, the check-in agent treated us as his lowest priority, even to the point of addressing another customer while he was supposed to be dealing with us. When he finally came back to us nearly 15 minutes later, he said that the luxury car we rented wasn't available, so we were getting an "upgrade" to a Kia Sorrento. It took two hours to get a car in which I had to be in extreme heat while pregnant. There were no accommodations offered, even though there was a heat advisory in Colorado at the time. When I got my first car, it was unacceptable with stains all over the seats and dirty. When I got my second car, I drove off and then the check engine light came on, and the electronic screen went blank. I argued with customer service and the tow center to have a car sent but by the time I was able to get through to someone to help, about an hour and a half on the phone, I was told it would take 4-6hours to have the car towed and exchanged. Given my trip was only two days, I had no choice but to drive the unsafe car back to the lot. When I arrived, I was told I would have to go through the same process of waiting until I demanded to see a supervisor. The supervisor gave me a car without waiting and said she would apply a discount to my service. I'm still waiting to see the refund applied to my card. This experience ruined my trip. They found the car in THEIR LOT!! And CHARGED US $4,000 more on my dads new credit card, told him he is on the do not rent list because of the 3 week late check in.. AKA THEY JUST CHECKED IT IN... ITS BEEN SITTING IN THIER LOT THIS WHOLE TIME! Had to get a lawyer and also left a review on the Business bureau. Still no one from the location has contacted us! Every time we get ahold of someone in the company, either from email or phone they say they will get back to us in 3-5 business days! We have gone back and forth! They have our boarding passes, hotel reservations, etc! People have been messaging me saying that this has been happening to them too! Once we open a case, I'll be adding all the people onto it so they can get their case resolved as well! Businesses can't just charge people because of their ignorance! We are not paying 4K for a car that we returned! Charge us the $250 and apologize! If you're renting a car, when you return the car, DEMAND a receipt!
