We discovered this spot years ago during a visit and have been itching to come back ever since. This spot is in the 7th ward and a real locals joint. When you come here, you get yourself a "set", enjoy the music (or play your own from the jukebox) and people watch. To our delight, we have seen some amazing brass players and The Original Pinettes, an all woman brass band, is the highlight for the evening. I learned a new thing here. See the photo attached to this review? You see the canned drink, the small liquor bottle, the cup and ice? It's called a "set-up". They set you up with all you need to make your mixed drink (or drinks) and for a nominal price; like under $10. When I asked the cab driver to take me to Bullet's Sports Bar, his reaction of "Uh, I don't know how to get there," indicated either one of two things: A. That I was a crazy tourist who didn't know what I was getting myself into. B. That not many tourists knew about this totally awesome place. Turns out he just really never heard of the place and didn't know how to get there. So, with my keen sense of direction (iPhone) we headed towards Bullet's. I had read a lot about this place beforehand, but still, even with all of the information I had digested, I still didn't really know what to expect. Initially, we drove right past the place because it blended in so well with the residential neighborhood that it's located in. The only reason I knew that it had to be Bullet's was the food truck parked outside. We got out of the cab, walked in, paid the $5 admission to see Kermit Ruffins, grabbed two Abita's, and waited for things to get going. It became apparent to me that Bullet's is definitely a place for locals. Everyone knew each other and the atmosphere was that of a family gathering or celebration. Everyone was very friendly and the bartenders treated us like we had been coming there for years. Even when Kermit arrived at the bar, he just walked in like a regular and began talking to everyone as if they were old friends, and they probably really were. As showtime crept closer, we began to see this man coming back and forth from outside the bar, dropping off food to some patrons. Curiously, I went outside to see what the deal was with this guy and where this delicious looking food was coming from. I exit the bar, turn my head to the left, and see a huge pickup truck with two massive barbecues attached to the trailer. These barbecues were playing host to the most delicious looking pieces of meat I had ever encountered. Pretty much anything you could want...ribs, chicken, and steak with sides of mac and cheese, potato salad, and beans. It was awesome. Everyone was hanging out outside having a great time and eating amazing food. Only in New Orleans can you find stuff like this... Now it's showtime and Kermit Ruffins picks up his horn and lets loose. At this point, Bullet's is packed and everyone is having a blast. Funny thing...even though Kermit was putting on a great show, it seemed like no one was really paying any attention to him at all. He was just providing the background music; the same way you would have music going if you were throwing a party. People were carrying on with their conversations and socializing as if Kermit wasn't even there. Do not pass up an opportunity to see Kermit Ruffins at Bullet's. The crowd was great, the food was awesome, and the atmosphere can't be beat. You will run into some great people who have interesting stories to share, if you are willing to listen. read more

Kermit Ruffins performs here 6-10pm (almost) every Tuesday. It's a dive bar, and packed with locals. It definitely isn't continuous Kermit for 4 hours, but it's well worth it to see him and his band at a real local's spot! A sports bar? Named Bullets? I was not especially jazzed to make this trip but it was a friend's birthday. Duty calls. As my rating reveals, I was entirely wrong. I'm not sure what the exact qualifications are to deserve such a designation but Bullets caters to the Grown & Sexy set. Enjoying Kermit Ruffins sans stage with the sweet aroma of the bbq pits filling my nostrils and the dancing, smiling people made for a very magical evening. Because of its location, Bullets maintains that best-kept-secret vibe. That sensation has been hard to find post-Katrina with limited venues reopening. When I was having lunch @ Willie Mae's our server insisted we come check this place out that night to see the best trumpet player in New Orleans. So what did we do? Go of course! First of all - this is a true neighborhood bar, completely unassuming and somewhat in a seedy area. DO NOT let that deter you from going! Once inside you will be greeted with so many pleasant smiles, faces, music and vibe. There were literally people from all walks of life in here in age, race, cultural background - just a mix of everyone with not a care in the world. First of all the music. Oh the music! If you want a quintessential Nawlins brass bad experience, come on Friday night (yes I went two nights in a row - its thaaaaattt goooood!). The menu is limited but can I just tell you - I had the BEST beans and rice here!! Dead ass! Apparently they have someone grandma in the back who is putting her whole foot (not, literal) in that damn pot. Jesus! And did I mention the guy who walked in selling something out of a bag? I saw him as soon as he came in. I didn't know what he was selling at first - All I knew was that I needed it. Guess what? They were the best home made pralines ever! True story. Bullet's is a neighborhood sports bar in New Orleans. It is located right down the street from my old high school.It is frequented by the alumni and fans of the school and since I was in town for one of their football games, I visited after we won. Its not very large but its not that small either. It was a great place to celebrate as everyone is very friendly and the drinks were flowing. I was told that they also serve food but that night they weren't? Me and my fellow alumni had a great time and every year that we come down it seems Bullet's is on our agenda. I'd been wanting to get to Bullet's since DJ Davis got fired for sending a pack of clueless, church-group tourists there on the series Treme. It finally happened last Friday night, and it well worth the wait. The Original Pinettes were layin' it down hard and inspiring some impressive footwork from the crowd. Local legend Kermit Ruffins plays all over the city, always a good show, but Bullets is just a bit different. Driving to the neighborhood you can still se remnants of Katrinas wrath...the bar isn't a bar as you'd think, but a typical old style New Orleans spot, looking more like a speakeasy. The huge, wide open downstairs of a giant house right in the middle of a neighborhood...and lucky neighbors indeed. You order booze and they'll bring you a bottle and set-ups, including ice, to fix your own. The tables will be filled with locals enjoying themselves, so get there early. And come hungry, there will be a guy grilling outside...mixed rib plates or pork chop sandwiches on white bread are always good. This isn't for everyone, but if you want to see how regular folks have a good time here in NOLA, you can't do better than here. read more

I doubt that would have been the case at a bar on Burbon St. Wednesday's are Kermit Ruffins night so he plays a full set and then hangs out doing and occasionally singing and playing. A few things to know: - plan to cab there and home because it's not the best neighborhood to walk in after dark - cash only though there is an ATM - there's a $5 cover charge on Wednesdays - most of the tables get reserved by locals so you'll likely need to stand - by about 9 pm the whole place basically becomes a dance floor - get there by 6pm - order set-ups - you'll get a small bottle of spirits, a bucket of ice, mixer and a glass. A gin set up cost me $18, which kept me going for a few hours read more

My Tuesday night at Bullet's will always stand out as an epic memory in all my time in New Orleans. The music started a little earlier than I expected so by the time I arrived the bar was hopping and all of the seats were taken. I brought in my food truck yaka mien which was delicious and stood at the bar for a while. Eventually an older gentleman gave me his seat which was so generous and sweet. The beer prices were very reasonable. The atmosphere had a wonderfully warm community vibe, amazing really. Kermit and crew were of course wonderful. I hope to be back, and soon. read more

Great place to catch a game. We were there to watch the Super Bowl. We had excellent service by the staff at Bullet's. Everyone was warm and friendly and provided a great atmosphere. There was delicious food provided by Anita. No music on the night we were there due to the Super Bowl, but they are well known to put on some great music. Great neighborhood bar with cheap drink prices. During the day it's filled with regulars, usually an older clientele. Sometimes it looks like if you add up the age of everyone in the joint that number would be greater than the powerball jackpot. You can also order "Set Ups" as well. A Set Up is a 1/2 pint of your favorite alcohol with a mixer for you to pour your own drinks. Due to popular demand an ATM has been added and there is FREE off street parking in the same block. The lot is usually attended by a Guy named Tiny who is not. Tuesday Nights Kermit Ruffins plays and Wednesday is Open Mic Comedy featuring regional comics. The food trucks parked outside are DELICIOUS. Some of the best BBQ chicken and baked beans I've had, and I'm from Alabama and grew up on some tasty homemade BBQ. 1/2 and 1/2 fried chicken and fried oyster poboy was scrumptious too. I came down for Kermit's show, and he was there, but never played. That said, there was live music the whole time and I enjoyed the band. Bartenders were nice and quick on their feet, which they had to be, because that place was packed. We got one of 2 tables that hadn't been reserved at 5:30 (for a 6pm show) and barely wrangled 4 chairs. I loved that folks from pretty much every walk of life seemed to be in that bar. It was a really cool experience, and I hope to be back for the food and music, but probably won't drink much. There's no tap or anything, nothing to write home about, as far as drink offerings go, but it's a dive bar, so that's part of the game. Heads up though: any bottled beer (Abita, Blue Moon, etc.) is $5 and crappy domestics (Miller High Li\fe, etc. are $4), and it's a cash only joint. Wow. What an unbelievable place. In the first season of Treme, Davis tells a group of young missionaries from Wisconsin to go to Bullet's with this advice: "Tell the cab driver 'You're Sure'". He couldn't have been more right. Got here on a Tuesday night at 6pm just in time to see Kermit Ruffins play his regular gig. I'd seen him at Vaughn's a few months back and the vibe at Bullet's is completely different. Where Vaughn's is a hipster magnet, Bullet's is just a solid neighborhood bar with friendly servers and great drinks. Here are the highlights of the evening: * Our server Monika. Fun, friendly, and never let us go thirsty for long. * Half-pints. They sell half-pint of various liquors (we did Jack Daniels) for $16. Throw in a can of coke for another couple of bucks and they bring you a bucket of ice and let you make your own drinks. It's bottle service, NOLA-style. * Kermit, Kermit, Kermit. Not much else to say about the man that hasn't been said already, but he was relaxed and having a great time - playing his butt off to get the room dancing. He had a special guest, a singer named Nayo Jones, that was teriffic sitting in on a few songs. Also, a singer named Mike Baptiste came by and sang Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness." Great show. * There was a food truck outside that my wife got some amazing fried chicken wings from. Very tasty. Also, there was a BBQ set up outside (not sure what they call themselves) and they were selling all kinds of great bbq food. I had a pulled pork plate that came with 3 sides (mac & cheese, potato salad, & baked beans). Some of the best food I had in NOLA this trip. Don't miss it. * Dr. John's long-time bass player (Dave something?) was sitting at the table next to us and was having a great time getting up to dance along to Kermit's tunes. Fun "Star" sighting. * Late in the night, a very sweet lady came through the bar with a tray of baked treats for sale. We bought a delicious little sweet potato pie (and she through in a 2nd pie for free). Later on, she came back through and we got a praline-covered brownie. So good. Anyway, if you're looking for something WAY off the beaten path - grab a cab and head to Bullet's on a Tuesday night (or any night ,really). I agree with what everyone has said about Bullet's. We went and saw Kermit Ruffins on Tuesday night, our last night in New Orleans and it was amazing. I loved being able to interact with him, the other musicians and the folks in the bar. By Thursday night he was playing on stage with Dave Matthews for the NFL kickoff and two days before he was two feet away from us. We ate before we went so we didn't have the BBQ. There were at least three BBQ grills going outside including Kermit Ruffins own grill, manned by one of his buddies. It all smelled amazing. This is a must for anyone who loves music and wants to experience real New Orleans. We had a hard time finding a cab from the quarter that would take us there but eventually made it. Get off the beaten path and experience New Orleans authentically. We saw Kermit Ruffins on a Thursday night. This is a million dollar show for $10!!! Just as impressive as the musical talent were the two Ladies who were magnificently running the whole bar by themselves. They were absolute experts at managing crowds, bartending, interacting with guests/regulars, and showing what real Southern hospitality looks like. These two women were masters when it came to the hustle of managing a bar, kitchen, and musical venue packed with people. They were friendly, energetic, fast, efficient, and just plain talented at their job!! The music was electric, intense, beautiful, and showcased the talents of world class musicians. There was a surprise performance by a young man named Shamarr Allen who was tutored and procured as a boy in the 9th ward by Kermit himself. The two men paired up to deliver a battle of horns that brought everyone to their feet with arms waving and people dancing with grins from ear to ear. Bullets will be one of my most treasured New Orleans experiences. You'd be a lucky soul to have such an opportunity as well!! read more

First time in New Orleans, and this is the first bar I went to. Nothing else can compare, now! We went for Kermit, and he not only wailed, but his friends were phenomenal as well. Everyone in the crowd was having nothing less than a blast! Singing, dancing, hooting and hollering. I heard it's not the best neighborhood, but it drew the best people regardless.
