Recently bought a place in Lavallette so my family and I have been trying new restaurants. Had dinner there tonight and was disappointed. We were sat at a dirty table and had to ask the waitress to wipe it down. I ordered the shrimp and scallop scampi. When it arrived the scallops were very pale looking but I gave them a chance anyway. The second scallop I ate was sour and I had to spit it out. I didn't make a scene but told my waitress they were bad and had spit one out. She informed me I was the second person to tell her that!! You would think they would stop serving them. My daughter had a clam chowder soup she also didn't like. Anyway, when I got the check they had given me a discount of $12.50 on a $28 dollar meal that I couldn't eat. I didn't complain. Paid my check and left. Definitely won't be returning. read more

Got take out this summer and it was good. Their lobster bisque is delicious. Glad to see it improve this year. We have eaten there many times and it is expensive and food was mediocre so we stopped eating there. So with covid we tried it for take out this year and happy we had a good meal. Would not be my first choice to eat due to quality versus price but it works when you want some seafood and you are in south seaside park. read more

Wish I had pictures but it was pretty dark in there but I really enjoyed this place. I got the surf and turf, I took a star off because the turf was pretty dry. It was a dry filet too so that was a little gross but everything else was really good. It is typical jersey shore prices which I expect when i go out to eat during the summer. They have crab pots too that I have had as well and they are really good. This place is real deal seafood and always has great music and a great nightlife bar scene. A lot of younger people and a few mixed age groups but it is always a good vibe and I will be going there this summer for sure. read more

Would rate 3 1/2 stars overall. Decent food, priced consistent with other similar restaurants in the area. Ate there twice over the summer. Portions are large and service is pretty good. Definitely go with seafood. Had the garlic crabs, huge portion, a bit over the top with the garlic. Would likely try another variety next time. read more

I wish I could give this place no stars. Absolutely horrible. First of all, our waitress wasn't even sure if we were her table, and didn't seem to know what she was doing. Once she took our order, we waited around for almost an hour. Then she and told us she'd lost our ticket, so it would be even longer of a wait. We asked to speak to the manager, and she came back saying he didn't want to come over and would rather the waitress resolve it herself. What kind of manager says that? We asked again and they finally sent him over. But we discovered on the way out he was actually the bartender. No manager in sight. To cap it all off, their reason for us not getting a basket of bread was "we didn't ask" (since when do you have to ask?), the food was bad (they had bad fries, salad AND pizza!) and they added an automatic 20% tip to our bill. If I were going to write a mawkish indie flick about Bum Rogers, it would be called "Inconsistent Scallops." And the entire movie would be different shots of the characters sitting around waiting and looking tired and stooped in ennui, and at the very end of two hours they'd get their meals and chew disappointedly and the credits would roll. It would be a Sundance Film Festival flop. Okay. Silliness is out of my system now. This place is... just... no. Just no. Not good. First off, there was no wait to be seated at 7pm on a Thursday, and yet we sat for about 20 minutes (no joke) to even be acknowledged by a server, much less get a drink order. My mom had to actually go up to the hostess and let her know we hadn't seen a server yet. And it's a good thing my sweet little mom did it, because I don't know if I would have been as nice after 20 hungry minutes without even a water, watching the on-duty waitress storming around carefully avoiding eye contact. My general rule is that I won't rate low just for service if the food is exceptional and worth the wait. But when the food FINALLY came, it was pretty underwhelming. I got the shrimp and scallops scampi... and eew. I love scampi sauce, but this scampi sauce was more like movie popcorn butter, thick and viscous and bright yellow and too salty. The shrimp was great, but the scallops were inconsistent. One would be mushy and the next would be tough and chewy. A few were cold in the middle. I gave most of them to my dad, who'll eat any seafood from anywhere, the brave soul. This place should stop pretending to be a bar/restaurant. Truth is, it's just a bar, and it also happens to have mediocre food. Definitely never ever coming back when hungry. Maybe just for a beer. read more

I have been coming here since I was in middle school for one thing and one thing only... GARLIC CRABS!!!!!!!!!!! They are to die for! I love coming down the shore because I almost never leave without getting my fix of garlic crabs. The location itself is a little off the beaten path at the end of the beach but the drive is well worth it. I love that the tables are lined with news paper which makes for easy clean up and that alone lets you know you are going to be very involved in eating these delicious little bastards. Make sure you are not going to be making out with anyone later that night because your breathe is going to be kickin. The crabs come out in a heaping bowl with buttery garlic broth on the bottom of the bowl for more dipping and is served with boiled potatoes and corn on the cob that also gets doused in that delicious garlic butter. Make sure you go when the crabs are in season ensuring you get decent sized crabs. The thought alone of these garlic crabs is making my mouth water. Can't wait to have my first experience of the summer soon! read more

We used to come here often and loved Happy Hour. Decided to go back in the middle of a beach day to enjoy happy hour with a group of 5.... (2-6pm). We got there around 3, and were very impressed by the menu- but thats where it stops.... we ordered a bunch of appetizers- the calamari wasn't cooked, the Crab bites were raw in the middle and tasted horrible! The clams were ok and the peel and eat shrimp were served with butter that tasted like it came from the movie theater. After being disgusted with the food, we decided to order a pizza, which actually wasnt so bad, or maybe we just thought it wasnt bad because of the awful food we had just eaten. The bar is dark and divey- its like going into a cellar on a beautiful summer day. Worst fried seafood platter. Flounder breading came completely off and the scallops were terrible and tasted like chicken nuggets must have been frozen the shrimp wasn't bad. Overpriced at 32 bucks. After living at the shore for most of my life, I must have passed Bum Rogers hundreds of times going to & from IBSP. Each time thinking, "hmmm... garlic crabs sounds pretty tasty" as I passed by. Tonight's double date with a couple of friends presented the perfect opportunity, since our original destination was closed till Mother's day. So, here's the details... First things first... Bum Rogers is a dive. Once you get past the ambiance (if that sort of thing bothers you), you realize that the place just works. The menu is pretty straight forward. Seafood, seafood, & more seafood. And in my opinion, Bum Rogers does it well. No, I didn't have the Garlic Crabs! Mostly because I knew I'd go back. I went for the Lobster / Steamer combo (2 of my weaknesses). Both were ridiculously good. The lobster was steamed to perfection, & the steamers were plump, sweet, & briny. They were honestly the largest steamers I've ever seen. The drawn butter with the platter was so good I could have drank it as a shot, but I restrained myself. The kicker was the Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap. It was the perfect compliment to the bountiful platter I was enjoying. Definitely a return visit in the future. read more

Yelp puts it best when it says a two star rating constitutes: "Meh. I've experienced better." Because I'm pretty sure this is what I said as we exited the building. Salad was iceberg lettuce with some not so fresh tomatoes and cucumbers haphazardly tossed in. Clams oreganta were pretty terrible. I took a first and a last bite all in one shot. Crab cakes were DECENT (read: DECENT). One star for the cocktails, one star for the cute waitress. Sorry Bum Rogers...you were a good idea at the time. This restaurant gets two stars ONLY because of the precious bus boys. Otherwise, they'd get a half star because I'm in a half-good mood. Beyond that, I could offer nothing. We stopped in here after a glorious afternoon at Island Beach State Park. Awesome beach, btw. First off, every beer that I requested (and that was listed on the menu) was out of stock. After I finally struck the right note and ordered something that they DID have, it took at least fifteen minutes for it to arrive at the table. I want to be nice and say that it was a Friday and the waitress may have been overwhelmed, but the truth is that she just looked like she hated our guts. She wasn't very nice, everything came to our table at a snail's pace, and she winced anytime we asked for the typical things (i.e. ketchup, napkins, a fork...) If you can believe it, when we gave her more than one card to pay the bill she spat, "You've got to be kidding me!" I thought maybe she was kidding ME. Wow. Great service, lady. That's not even the beginning, though. The food was actually nasty. I ordered broiled fish with veggies and rice and the entire plate was fluorescent yellow because it was covered in butter. EVERYTHING was covered in butter. I felt my heart thumping off-beat when we left... I was sure that I was headed straight for the ER with a heart explosion. Plus, the very thing that they're supposedly famed for - the crabs - were miniscule and not very appetizing. Last, but not least: ew. This restaurant is NOT very clean. We originally wanted to go to the place across the street, but the wait (at least an hour) and the fact that the place was as hot as hades made us flee to the comfort of Bum Rogers. We were told we would have a 15 min wait here unless we wanted a high top in the bar area. The bar was fine. It was packed with an very odd assortment of people from all age groups (21-really old). Our server came right over an got us our drinks. The menu looked really good. I was very torn over fish tacos or surf & turf. I know, two very different meals, but I really love them both. I decided on the surf & turf. It was absolutely delicious. The lobster tail was a real treat. I don't eat it that often, so when I do get it, I hope it's always as good as this one. The steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare filet mignon. The potatoes went great with the wonderful meal, but I wish the vegetable wasn't green beans. All in all it was a great spot. They had some live music in the bar area and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Really good shore place to hit up if you get the chance. read more

I am in complete shock to see such low reviews, especially since the complete renovation... We've been going to Bums since 2001 which means I've been apart of the roller coaster ride over the past 14 years. While its always been a great spot to grab drinks, the food took a turn for the worst before new ownership came in after Sandy. I have to give these guys all the credit in the world.. They revamped the joint while keeping that look we are love and remember. We are all familiar with the front bar and dining room. No need to comment there. The new back bar, patio and tiki bar are what makes Bum's a phenomenal draw.. The Tiki bar all summer into fall was great and is also a Sunday spot for football. Plenty of TV's! The food has been upgraded significantly. We were in town last week to check on the house and ordered an appetizer feast for lunch.. Seared Ahi Tuna was stunning and delicious. I HIGHLY Recommend it. The Bavarian Pretzels are just a jackpot meal. Wings are top notch and the mozz sticks/triangles are top 5 ever in my book. We added the lobster bisque which was phenomenal. While it did turn out to be an expensive lunch for 4 people, we enjoyed every second... They have to pay for all the wonderful upgrades... Looking forward to April 15th when the house opens up for the season and the drinks start flowing at Bum's... BTW, how much to buy the dancing crab on the roof? read more

First time here after hearing raves. There were pluses and minuses. Sat at the bar - the staff were all pleasant and attentive. My daughter enjoyed her fish taco meal, but my fried flounder platter was very disappointing. Paper thin flounder with a breading that had a weird taste and it was like the fish was slid into a breading pocket . We make a point of coming here when we're staying down the shore. My daughter and her girlfriends made this the birthday spot for their girls weekend - so we'll be there tonight! It's always a great spot for family, messy buckets of crabs, babies in high chairs, passing food around and lots of laughter. Waitstaff has been spot on every time . Yes, it can be a bit fast moving. Bum Rogers is a capital-J Joint. The food is very good, the measure of which is always taken by how they avoid screwing up basics like french fries and hamburgers. Apparently they have seafood here as well, which makes sense since a) it is located near large bodies of water with lots of fish in them and b) the Berkeley Seafood Market is within halibut-tossing distance and Berkeley has terrific fresh fish. Of it's Jointlike attributes, it is neither very clean and neat, nor grungy and pestilent. It smacks of a well-worn locale that will happily feed you, quench your thirst, and give you room to enjoy yourself. Bring your family or your friends, it doesn't matter to them. Local tip: watch walking to it, as the side of the road floods at every rainfall and New Yorkers like to drive past and shoot the puddle at pedestrians. -C read more

When I was a kid, lobster was my favorite food. Now you may think that I'm from some hoity-toity, prep school-attending, polo-playing, Hamptons-vacationing family. Nope- blue collar, Springsteen worshipping, pickup truck-driving, Jersey Shore kid right here. I just really loved lobster. And trips to Bum Rogers as a kid usually meant that my beloved crustacean would make its way onto my plate. On a recent visit to Bum Rogers, over a decade since moving away from the shore, I had a chance to relive my childhood visits. And I have to say that I was underwhelmed. I visited on Memorial Day weekend, shortly after they had reopened under new ownership after sustaining damage from Sandy. The inside of the restaurant looked pretty good- it definitely looked alot more modern. We went for an early dinner- it may have been about 5 pm- and it was slighly busy but not crazy. Service was a bit spotty- for example, they ran out of menus.. weird. I didn't go with my beloved lobster (now that I'm an adult and paying the bill, I'm a bit more conservative with my menu choices!). Instead I got a fried fish sandwich. It was OK but didn't really impress me too much. The roll was a bit too tough and the fish didn't fit properly on the roll, so it was difficult to eat. One of the members of our party got shrimp scampi, which looked pretty good and was a huge portion. Prices seemed pretty reasonable- especially for the location near the beach. Overall, I was not really impressed but I didn't have a bad experience. My sister moved into a house around the corner from Bum Rogers so I'm sure I'll be visiting more in the future. Tons of huge seafood platter options along with some burgers and pastas. Got a lobster, 1/2 dozen seasoned shrimp, 4 garlic crabs, corn & potato $25 - bargain. Everything was cooked perfectly and definitely not previously frozen. Huge decent burger and fries too. Bread basket is blah. Bum Rogers is decent as far as Seaside restaurants go. Came here today with a friend and my parents for lunch and had no problem getting a seat. Our waitress, Melissa, was great and tried her best to inform us. We decided to get a bunch of appetizers to share. The crab cake appetizer was a great quality with lots of crab meat in it but it arrived cold and for the price we paid we only received one and were disappointed. Don't even bother with the steamed clam appetizer either 11.99 and you get 10 little necks that are cold. The crabs, which were the highlight of the meal, were delicious. They are a lot of work but fun and worth it. Beers were cold, company was good, crabs were fun. I'll continue to make a yearly stop here for nostalgias sake but don't think the food is anything worth writing home about. read more

Have you ever craved a restaurant you went to years ago? Well I haven't been to Bum Rogers in years. I flew in from Florida and got my family and went right there. Ten of us turned away at the door by the rudest hostess. We were willing to wait over an hour but she just kept saying "nope". Every time she came to talk to us the wait got longer and longer. I don't understand lack of customer service. I don't care how long you have been in business. Anyway, 5 days later after we all calmed down 5 of us went back. Food and crabs were good and our waitress was very good. Still not thrilled that I couldn't dine there with the people I wanted to go out with. I'll be back next July and maybe try again. read more

I almost want to cry when I think about how good this place USED to be :( Always came here when I was a kid, the whole family .. over 15 people. Even had my mother's 40th birthday party in the private room during one summer vacation. This place used to be the spot. Fresh seafood at great prices .. and overall good food. My first time here. My friends and I sat outside. The area is really cute but I dont like the idea of bringing dogs back there. I love dogs but not where people are eating!! We all ordered appetizers. My one friend and I shared the crab cake which was good, crab dip which was ok (Ive had better), steak crostinis which were nothing special, crab balls which were ok. My other friends had coconut shrimp.and calamari which they said were good. The drinks were ok (not strong enough for the price!!!!!).$12 for a cocktail....the prices here are not cheap!! I went to bum rogers in Seaside park Nj with my wife and tw0 close friends on the recommendation of another friend. The yelp 3 stars kind of caught my interest but I gave it a try. I ordered the manhaattan clam chowder in a bowl at $5.99 and it was not great and not that hot in temperature. not worth $3.00!I ordered the tuna sahsi at 15.99 with wasabi and it was not tasty what so ever. Really nice outdoor yard with pretty trees and set up. The food was really good, I wouldn't say best steak though. The Prime Rib was very very dry. The Seafood was really good though. This was another good find on our vacation. We arrived at 5:30 and there was already a wait. The bar side had Avery loud band which was a bit nerve wracking, but it's a bar...I get it. The prices are fair. We had 5 beers, crab dip, cup of soup and 2 entrees for $100. The crab dip was really good and husband said it was some of the best Manhattan clam chowder. Bum Rogers is your run of the mill seashore bar / restaurant right before the entrance of Island Beach State Park. We stopped in here after a quick drive through the park. Cold beers, a nice genuine pour with mixed cocktails and some pretty good fried calamari. Guy next to us ordered the shrimp a la vodka, which looked really good but sent it back complaining it was too salty... it was just before 1pm on a Sunday and the guy looked pretty cracked out and flashing his wad of $100's every 5 minutes so who knows what the real story was. All in all random local spot with everything available for a classic Jersey shore experience! I'll be back for the Bloody's!! read more

Been awhile since I have been here and in the past I always avoided the place as I felt it simply wasn't the most sanitary place on the market... It appeared run down and well in need of an upgrade. Glad I stopped by this past week with a few friends for drinks and what not as they certainly have upped the game here.. First off not sure if there were renovations or not but the place is MUCH cleaner than last.. Obviously the main dining room on the right for full dining with family... There is the bar area with multiple nice flat screen TV's everywhere where many eat and drink at the bar. There are the tables in the bar area as well booths and what not and then there is what looks like to me up the steps in rear a new bar with more seating. All and all even jam packed on Thursday there was room to breath. Plenty of drink specials, beer specials and Thursday night rib and prime rib night made the menu a nice adventure. ... Started off with some cold beers and decent wines by the glass as well.. rolled directly into a Spanish style Shrimp and garlic sauce which was in short EXCELLENT.. Large Succulent perfectly cooked shrimp in a very nice orange garlic sauce. $9.00 plenty of shrimp and nice bread for dipping. Also tried were basket of buffalo wings which were good nothing special... but hot fresh and tasty.... Last on appetizer list were mozerrela squares with marinara sipping sauce again nothing over the top but still very good. Dinners.... Standard prime rib cut normally $23.95 with Potato and vegetable $17.95 tonight.. Ordered rare and aside from the fact he stated this is as rare as it gets with us it was medium to medium well ... it was REALLY TASTY and tender. Small tomato salad and mashed potato accompanied very good. Garlic Crabs.. Good as I remember and normally they can be a little sandy but these were very clean with a nice sauce... No coffee or desert .. but all and all a really nice upgrade from last time I went and would definitely repeat. read more
