I love funky food and grew up eating this, so to find a place that makes so tasty is a real treat. I got a large, but honestly... even if you're a "big back" a regular would be fine. The soup is very flavorful and has an intense, yet clean taste. Each bowl also has ample toppings. It's so good! Another thing I like about Bun Mam Ha Tien is how clean and tranquil it is. My absolutely favorite place whenever I craze for authentic Vietnamese Bún Mắm aka Fermented Fish Soup (#1 on the menu). In fact, I only order Bún Mắm when I come here and Bun Mam Ha Tien has the best Bún Mắm in San Jose, in my opinion. Starting with their portion. I ordered a small bowl but it filled me up! The portion was so generous and filled to the brims with delicious roasted porks, 2 full-size fish fillets, squid slices, 2 with-head-on jumbo shrimps, eggplant pieces and lots of garlic chives which I love. The soup has the right balance of sweetness from all the seafood goodies and the saltiness from the fermented fish. I drank my soup clean LOL. If you're not Vietnamese, the smell of the fermented fish may repulse you. However, I encourage you to give it a try as Bún Mắm here is as authentic as what you can get from Vietnam. The service was quick and attentive. As soon as I walked in, the server noticed me and let me choose the seat I wanted. Order was taken quickly and my food came out steaming hot within the next 3-5 minutes. The store is small yet cozy. They have 4 booths which can accommodate up to 4 people per booth. Despite the prominent signs for boba tea, this is actually a family-owned restaurant whose main dish is a Vietnamese fish noodle soup called Bún Mắm. It is made with round spaghetti-like rice noodles, pork, fish, squid, shrimp, eggplant, pieces of tender fish mixed with multiple types of fermented fish paste. It is also served with lime and many fresh herbs and vegetables such as slivers of banana blossom, bean sprouts, lettuce and mint. I mostly order the #2 Bún Nươc Lèo Sóc Trăng, which is a plain fish and pork noodle soup without fermented fish paste that comes with a fried shrimp cake on the side. The broth is delicious and flavorful. I sometimes crave it when I'm not feeling well like chicken noodle soup. The service is on point and especially good if you speak Viet. It is a clean modern dining room with glossy white tables and colorful chairs. That said, the menus have English and this is a good experience for non-Viet people who want to try something other than pho. This place should really be more popular considering how good the food is. It's often half empty while other nearby restaurants are bustling. The boba signs and online description are confusing; from the outside you can't tell if it's a boba tea shop or a restaurant. Small store, 11 tables, 44 seats. Can get pretty humid on a jot and crowded day. I've been here twice and both times, and I've only seen women running the store. They were really nice, especially to my little one. They have high chairs and was gracious enough to bring us small pair of scissors and little bowl so I could portion out a small bite for my infant. Dinner consisted of: -Bun Mam [Large] $18.50 x2 -Mi Xao [stir fry egg noodles with chicken, pork, & shrimp] $16.95 -Coconut Special [Large] $8.50 x2 -Coconut Special [Regular] $7.50 Food came out quick and the bun mam fermented flavor was strong- which I like!! As a fair warning, I left here feeling extremely thirsty so the sodium/msg levels here seem to be very generous. The noodle portions are what really stood out- BUT IN A BAD WAY. For both bowls to be larger, the noodles were beyond shady. The shadiest noodle portions I've ever had. I literally had to ask an employee to verify whether or not the bowls were BOTH larges. They consist primarily of broth and if you want to remotely feel full, expect to dump the entire bowl of veggies to increase it's amounts. Mi Xao wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. Flavoring was tasty but the protein wasn't appetizing. The shrimps used in the entire meal did not seem fresh. The pork and chicken pieces looked like scraggly/leftover bits. Came for the BBH at Hue next door on a Sunday but it was overflowing. So decided to try this instead. Always thought it was just a boba shop but surprised to find it had interesting eats. Came here over the weekend because I was craving for bun mam and this is something I do not cook at home. We haven't been here in a long time but this is our spot we like to go to for bun mam. Surprisingly, we got there around 4pm and no one was eating inside. We ordered 2 bun mam large size and a chicken rice plate for our kids. The bun mam was tasty and to our liking. Food: My aunt highly recommended the Bun Moc here and that was what we all ordered. The bun moc was tasty. I'm used to my mom's version of bun moc, but this was pretty good. It's on the blander end of the spectrum, but that just means more room for Sriracha! The portion size is decent. Tip: Noodle soup orders typically come with bean sprouts/lime/mint. Ask for STEAMED bean sprouts. Your soup will stay hot when you add it into your bowl :) Parking: Plenty. The restaurant is located inside a plaza. Service: Good. When you find out that ChadBro is hung like a tic tac, what do you crave? Bún Bò Hue with Ox Penis (@ Bún Bò Hue An Nam). Not kidding about the Ox Penis...it's deeeelicious! There are so many variations of Vietnamese noodle soups but one that I haven't heard of until recently: Bún Mam, fermented fish soup aka Vietnamese Gumbo. It's extremely rare to find...out of the many hundreds of Vietnamese restaurants in the SF Bay Area, I've so far found three places that serve it. No surprise that one of those places is in Man Jose.... Bún Mam Ha Tien in Vietnam Town (next door to the wildly popular Hue). The menu is simple with less than 20 items. 80% of the menu is noodle soups: Bún Mam (fermented fish soup), Bún Bò Hue (spicy beef soup), Bún Rieu (tomato crab soup), Banh Canh (Vietnamese udon), Hu Tieu (pork & seafood), and etc. They do not add MSG to their food. I'm super sensitive to MSG and didn't get the usual headaches, dry mouth, and racing heart afterwards. Bún Mam Ha Tien shares a business with Simply Boba where you can also order one of their drinks on the same bill. I've never had Bún Mam before so I decided to pop my cherry by ordering the #2 Bún Nuoc Leo Sóc Trang: Fermented fish soup w/ roast pork, tilapia, rice noodles, fried shrimp cake (Large - $9.95): http://bit.ly/2yarNnY. The #2 has a lighter broth than #1 which is supposedly very pungent. The broth reminded of a hybrid of Filipino Sinigang and Thai Tom Yum. You can really taste the lemongrass flavor. The thick, cylinder rice noodles were perfectly al-dente and slippery. Loved the Chinese roast pork (perfect lean meat:fat ratio) - the crunchy skin gave the noodle soup good texture (we even ordered an extra side of it). Tilapia filets were moist and tender. The fried shrimp cake was great for sopping up the broth. Throw in some accompanying mint leaves, shredded cabbage, and banana blossoms for some freshness and you have a delicious well-rounded meal. We also ordered the #3 Bún Bò Hue: Vietnamese spicy beef noodle soup w/ beef shank, steamed pork roll, pork blood (Large - $10.95): http://bit.ly/2g9EHy3. It was decent. The broth was spicy, beefy, and also had good lemongrass flavor. Since they don't use msg, it's not as robust though. The owner warned to keep our belongings very close to us because there's been thefts in the area. Much appreciated. I'm always craving bun mam from this location!!! As a regular customer, I can honestly say that this place is very consistent with its food and service. I get #1 here because their bun mam is their house special. It comes with bbq pork, which is my favorite. Bun nuoc leo #2 tastes just like #1, except the soup is less fermented and is much more diluted, so if you're not used to eating Vietnamese gumbo, I'd say start off with #2 and see if you like it, since the taste of fish paste from #1 can be too strong for some people. #2 doesn't have squid or shrimp but comes with fried shrimp cake (banh cong). I ALWAYS order the shrimp cake as a side with my #1 because they're so good together! I like to dip the fried shrimp cake into my soup and eat it right away because you get the crunchiness from the cake AND the taste of hot, flavorful soup at the same time. I end my meals with a milk tea from Simply Boba, which is a shared business with Ha Thien. My favorite is the Taro since they leave some taro pieces in the drink, which gives it an interesting taste compared to the other taro milk teas I've had. Side note: If you have high blood pressure (like a few of my family members), I'd be careful and refrain from eating too much soup made from fermented fish paste. Bun mam soup is very salty! My mom introduced me to this place, and they have the best Bun Mam here compared to what I have ever had at any place. It is a family owned business and they are super friendly and nice when I eat there. I usually get it for takeout now, but the quality is still the same being super good! Sometimes the broth can be a little too salty for me so I prefer to add some water to the broth and a lot of lime when I have it at home. But still, this is the best bun mam place in San Jose!! So flavorful here. I'm not a big fan of bbh, to go to diff spots trying who has the best one but when coming to this place, it is my go to dish half the time. The other half of the times, I love their version of Ga Roti. Some people see that as dry chicken w red rice...here it's actually tender and fall off the bone. Yummy! It's almost like a sweet soy sauce flavor. The service here is great. Same women you see every week. This is a solid place to get Bun Mam. I like that the bathroom and overall place was clean. Usually that means the kitchen is clean! My first experience with Bun Mam was in Oakland and horrible. The soup was barely warm, the fish didn't taste fresh and I'm not a big fan of the funkiness of fermented fish and shrimp paste (despite being Thai myself). I tried it for the second time here, but this time got the #2, which is the southern version of Bun Mam. My Vietnamese friend told me that this is less pungent and salty. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I liked that the broth was hot. The funkiness of the broth was tempered with the fresh crispy bean sprouts and banana blossoms, as well as the addition of mint and lime. Everything went very well together. It felt classically Vietnamese in that it was this interplay of flavor profiles and textures. I finished my bowl. I like the fried shrimp cake that comes on the side - that was also good. My only qualm with this dish is that the fish fillet in the broth was a little fishy - I could tell it was frozen and not fresh. But not too fishy that I couldn't enjoy the dish.
