This is a small eatery in a strip mall right around the corner from CSUN. They have a good-sized parking lot with plenty of spaces, so parking shouldn't be difficult. They have a few tables inside, and a couple outside. I came here on a Saturday, right around noon. They were pretty busy at the time, but I was still able to get one of the small tables outside. The staff were courteous, and the service was quick. This was my first time eating here, and I think it's good. I tried their grilled pork banh mi, the shrimp summer rolls, and the mango flavored iced tea. The sandwich was good, but I feel like they toned things down a bit to have a broader appeal to American palates. There's no pate included with the grilled pork sandwich, no mayo or similar spread (that I could detect), and the slivered jalapenos have no heat. The daikon and carrots also have a much milder pickled flavor than what you would normally get at other banh mi shops. The bread is a little too thin for my liking, but it was nicely toasted crispy, without tearing up the roof of your mouth. I noticed a generous amount of butter on the bread, which I don't think is a typical ingredient in banh mis. I didn't enjoy the shrimp summer rolls. It was weird to see pale iceberg lettuce in there, and the peanut sauce that comes with it is kind of flavorless. The mango flavored iced tea was delicious though, and they also offer it with boba if you like. Overall, food here was good but not great. Still definitely worth a try. I will be returning here, even if only because they're open later than my favorite banh mi shop. read more

Quick casual place to get authentic and quality vietnamese dishes. Good portion and good prices as well. The menu isn't too large and I appreciate that each item is made well. For the sandwiches, I liked the chicken and the deli special. The veggies they use in the sandwiches are fresh and generous. The bread is crispy on the outside. The chicken is very juicy with great lemongrass flavor. The deli special is just my favorite vietnamese sandwich anywhere I go. As for the soups, my favorite is the bun bo hue. Nice lady taking orders.  1) Cha Gio/spring roll in rice wrapper stuffed w/ chopped up saifun-like mung bean fine pasta, cloud ear mushroom, carrots, ground pork. There is a slight fermented sourness.  Not as meaty, fat & rustic as  Cha Gio by Pho Quang Trung in Orange County nor Golden Deli in San Gabriel Valley.  The fried wrapper is initially crispy, crunchy, but later becomes chewy, gummy almost like Mochi rice as one chews. The Nuoc Mam/sweetened fish sauce is more  salty, mild, fish Umami. I added Sriracha to give more piquancy & sweet garlic tone.  PS  Egg Roll here has a wheat based wrapper.  2) Bahn Mi Dac Biet/ Vietnamese French Bread sandwich has a slightly crunchy surface w/ a more yeasty, moist Baguette center.  Thin, bland slices of pork Pâté, pork roll, and crumbled pork Char Siu dyeing the bread red and flavoured by 5 spice seasoning of star anise, cinnamon, Sansho pepper, fennel, cloves. However, the prepared meats lack a satisfying meaty Umami.  Garnish of healthful shredded carrots, Daikon radish, crispy, watery cucumber wedge, soapy cilantro, Jalapeño . Mild sweet-sour flavour of the vegetables refreshes the meat & the starch.  Food here is A-OK, and convenient for those living in north central San Fernando Valley and craving Vietnamese food.  3+ stars read more

Here are the 2 best things I remember in Bun Me. 1. Top notch service and customer care. The staff allowed me to modify my vermicelli bowl but substituting the vermicelli with vegetables. I found easy parking in the lot and found my sandwich waiting for me when I arrived. Nice. Tasty pork Banh Mi for only $11. Quick, easy and good. Nicely crusty chewy bread, savory pork sliced Chashu and paté with pickled carrot, daikon and cucumber-and it came with some chili sauce to add for some extra bite. This hole in the wall gem is my absolute favorite place to eat. No joke. It blows away all the other Vietnamese and Asian dives. The buns are always soft and fresh. The steak rice is full of flavor, the bahn mi sandwiches are just delicious, and everyone in my family including my toddlers enjoy eating the raw vegetable salad/spring rolls. My only complaint ... they close early in the night and many times I wished they were open .... it would have have been more Bun me & Bahn mi for me! read more

The grilled pork banh mi that I had here was okay-ish. Although the meat portion was very plentiful the meat could've been a tad more tender. Also pretty skimpy on the pickled vegetables. Least favorite thing about the sandwich was that the baguette had zero crunch to it. The fried spring rolls weren't the crispiest that I've had and they were a bit soggy-greasy to the touch (as if they were previously chilled with a lot of condensation on them and then thrown straight into the fryer). What came in clutch though was the Vietnamese iced coffee. Super smooth Vietnamese coffee brew with the sweetener. Tried-and-true Vietnamese iced coffee that (miraculously) helped me stay awake without feeling overly jittery during my complete drive back to NorCal. I had tried their pho before and it was pretty good and this time I wanted to try their banh mi because that's what they're known for right? I ordered 2 of the #1 Bun Me Deli Special with veggie on the side for to go. Had to keep veggie on the side so it won't be too soggy since I was driving out of the area for another 40 mins. When I got it and got into the car and felt how skinny it was, I knew, I might be disappointed but in my mind I'm thinking maybe it's because I don't have the veggies in. After getting home and unwrapping it. Boy, was I right. Felt like I got ripped off. The little amount of meat they put looks so different for what I see in others' Yelp pics. Even after adding in the veggie (came with 1 one strip of cucumber), it still looked so sad because there wasn't even much veggie to begin with. I bad put in all the amount of veggie they gave me too. $21.90 total for 2 skinny sandwiches ): I'm sad. I wanna give this place a 2.5, but Yelp doesn't do half stars. So I just mark 3 stars. Marking 2 stars is sad since their pho is not bad and service is good. Like the person who takes the order, she's really nice and answers any questions you have about the menu. (Completely forgot I reviewed this before... But goes to show this is still a solid choice.) This has been a go-to of mine whenever I visit my dad. We love how simple and filling a banh mi is. Although a perfect banh mi is typically hard to tackle, I've always enjoyed Bun Me's variety. My favorite as of late has been their caramelized pork. The bread is a good baguette. It's got crunch and fluff going. Jalapeños are crunchy with no seeds! Which for someone who gets scared of eating raw jalapeños.. this was appreciated. However their pickled carrots could be just a little more flavorful, pickled-wise. Maybe just a little more vinegar? Overall, I've never not enjoyed their banh mi. More recently, we also went in for their sweet ginger wings. Mmm! Delicious. With a side of sweet potato fries to share. The staff is cool. They've allowed us to try tasters of new meats they're trying such as the caramelized pork from awhile back. It seems to be a customer favorite these days! There's a few tables in there to dine. It's almost a hole in the wall. But if you happen to know the Northridge area and enjoy banh mi's, you'll find this easily! Next time you're craving one, go grab it.
