I rarely write reviews and most of the time when I do, it is always to support small businesses. I am appalled by how unprofessional burkell's front desk person is. They sent an invoice randomly about 3 months after they came out to do an estimate on our heating system printed on a pink paper with past due on it. We never received an invoice or a note saying they charge for estimates. We went with their competitor and I am so happy we did. When I called to clear up the issue and inquire about what it was for, she literally yelled back "well that's fine if you don't pay it, but lose our number bc we will never do work for you ever again" and literally hung up the phone. Mind you, my only question was, "I don't understand what this invoice is for because you didn't do any work for us, can you clarify?" I'm not sure if the person was just having a really bad day and needed to throw a tantrum, but Burkell's management should take a look at how they handle customer service. This review is only for their front desk and billing dept. I called back to speak to management and she picked up and hung up on me. I am completely appalled by how they treat their customers. It is surprising bc when their technician came out, he was very nice and professional. I have asked Burkell to help out with replacing a toilet, among other issues. Chris recommended a particular one, which turned out to work great, plus his quote for replacing it was accurate. This despite the fact that a different Burkell plumber came over to do the replacement after I picked up the toilet and he said it was a difficult job because the old toilet was complicated to remove. He did not charge any more for that. This is typical for these plumbers. They are very good about coming out within 24 hours of your call, especially if you call in the morning. read more

Do not use this company if you value customer service. I ordered a $900 faucet hot/cold water dispenser and booked install with the office. When they never showed up after the 2 hour window had come and gone, I found out that they office had booked it into 2017; instead of into 2018 so the tech never showed up. When it got re-scheduled, I suggested they might want to offer my client a discount on the labor for the inconvenience of waiting around all day due to THEIR ERROR. The office put me through to the Jake Newman's (owner) voicemail where I left a very nice message "suggesting" that and asking him to call me back-which he did not. He then proceeded to send my client a scathing voicemail telling his tech to remove the product because the client wouldn't pay-the tech asked them if they wanted to be billed! He wasn't even asking for payment. They never said they wouldn't pay! This jerk doesn't call, doesn't get the story, doesn't find out what even happened and leaves that BS voicemail to a high-end home where he could have received many referrals, not only from the client but from me who sits on a board of personal assistants with 100+ of them that manage homes all over the bay--bad move Jake. You need to work on your customer service skills and take ownership when your office makes a mistake. As a former Store Manager for Target and Sears running $40 million dollar stores, I can tell you that giving a 10% discount would have gotten you A LOT further than how you chose to handle this situation. read more

We are going through a major remodel and have used 2 other plumbing companies and have had 5 plumbers work our project. All the plumbers were set up through my General contractor and their rates ranged from $150 to $175 per hour. Neither plumber was available, So I decided to call the Burkell to reseat a toilet after the hardwood floors completed. I knew they had a service rate of around $175 per hour and since I had already had 2 toilets reseated and knew the job would take less than an hour and involved installing a wax gasket that sells for $12 retail. When Roman, the plumber presented the bill after reseating the toilet, it was for $405.00. I said that's almost 250% higher than your normal rate and is completely unreasonable. Roman called Chris the manager and found out that he should of charged me $315.00 because he wasn't taking away an old toilet. After going back and forth with Roman, I I got on the phone with Chris (Burkell Manager) and ask him how did he get $315 for a service call ($175 for 1 hour + $12 gasket) to come up with $315.00. Chris said the plumber should have have quoted me before I started the work (which HE DID NOT). The only thing the plumber said was it will take between 20 to 60 minutes to complete. Since I knew the hourly service rate, I knew the would be charging my about $200 max. Chris was super unfriendly and never apologized for any of the errors. Chris told me that I can either pay nothing and to NEVER call Burkell again or I could $315 and NEVER call Burkell again. Since I am an honest person, I decided to pay the unreasonable price of $315. Burkell is dishonest and priced gouged me. I never received an apology from Chris for not be quoted and truly believed they ripped me off by. Terrible customer service! On top of the price gouging, they never bolted down my toiled properly. It moved from side to side and needs to be properly bolted down. Now I am going to need to call someone else to come out to fix the simple job Burkell could not do. After being priced gouged and receiving shoddy work and no apology by manager Chris, I am going to take his instruction and NEVER CALL BURKELL AGAIN. What they don't realize that I am going to tell everyone I know about there terrible service, pricing and workmanship. More importantly my wife is on the board for the HOA here that has 139 units. Currently we use Burkell for Association plumbing needs and they are also list as the preferred vendor when condo owners need work done inside the units. On September 19 an estimator visited my house for an Air Conditioning installation estimate. He promised to email me the estimate. Ten days later, I called Burkell, left a message asking when I would receive the estimate. No response. Called again a few days later, left a detailed message with the AC manager. No response. Okay, this isn't the Burkell Plumbing of days gone by, when it was the leader in Marin plumbers. They have apprentice trainees doing the work who are NOT fully qualified. We've used Burkell's for years, but now need to find an up-to-speed plumbing outfit. Case in point: the head guy Jake estimated a job to install a pressure reducing valve, but then sent his trainee to do the work. Result: new valve was installed, but the trainee did such a poor job of soldering that a bunch of my sink faucets clogged up with the excess solder that he kept jamming into the solder joint. God knows what the filters in my washing machine, dish washer, etc., look like. Case in point #2: I pointed out (to the trainee - oops!) where I saw water leaking from a drain pipe in a bathroom sink. When know--it-all Jake and the trainee go to fix the leaky faucet, lo and behold they launched on some project to use silicone caulking to seal the new Grohe faucet, rather than simply address the known leak! When my wife tries to tell them, they get arrogant about knowing plumbing better than anybody, and THEN DISCOVER that, in fact, the leak is from the joint in the drain pipe, as HAD BEEN POINTED OUT TO THEM. So their arrogance caused them to fix a NON-PROBLEM until confronted again with the continued leak. SHEESH! Anyway, we used to use Burkell's for everything, but now it's time to fine a reliably competent plumber, not somebody trying to charge full rates while training newbies. And who will listen when we say "We saw water leaking from THERE." read more

The furnace decides to quit late afternoon the day before Thanksgiving. Call a couple of contractors both that afternoon and on Friday. Not surprisingly, no return calls. Monday we include Burkell in our outreach. They answer the phone! Technician arrives that day within the scheduled block of time, problem diagnosed, part ordered. It arrives Tuesday and is installed on Wednesday. The technician was a very pleasant, professional fellow. Overall, a very positive experience. read more

I have used Burkell for several years, but I can no longer recommend them. We had them install a new Toto toilet, but they installed the wrong color base. It was very obvious, but the installer either didn't notice or didn't care. When he returned, I asked him to look at another toilet with a broken handle. It took him 10 min to fix it and he charged me $125. If he told me in advance, I would have declined. When I complained to the owner, he also could care less. Don't use Burkell. There are plenty of other good plumbers in Marin. read more

BURKELL was referred to me by a neighbor here in San Anselmo. My intention was to get multiple plumbing repairs and evaluation since our house is going to be sold. The actual repairs were performed, but the explanations of the repairs were inadequate. Furthermore, the recommendations such as replacing all four toilets were highly questionable. When I suggested their information was faulty, no effort was made to really relate to my concern. BURKELL doesn't seem to want to research thoroughly, and the owner did not do a good job of satisfying my questions. I suppose my questions annoyed him. This sort of attitude is quite strange considering how many plumbing companies exist in Marin County. As a last negative, the. $600+ invoice description of the work performed was poorly done and quite confusing. There was also no indication of how much actual time was spent on the plumbing job and evaluation at our house. Interestingly, this company required my credit card information before making the appointment to come to the job. That up-front credit card requirement should have warned me not to deal with them. I don't recommend BURKELL for the above reasons. read more

Well, I think I'm just another homeowner who got "had" by Burkells. I really wish I had read these reviews first before calling them. Just read several homeowner's 1 star reviews and that pretty much describes what I went through: bad service, rude and misleading dispatcher, over charges for work (after surprising you with a high bill with no forewarning at all about the hourly rate prior to performing so called "work", the tech was very defensive when challenged how long he was actually in my house and made me very uncomfortable), that does not fix the problem, when you call back to discuss, the curt dispatch lady just cuts you off and transfers you to the "owner's" voicemail who never calls back. It's their way of "throwing away" dissatisfied customers. Based on my and the other customers' experience, it sure seems that as long as you're a not-so-savvy homeowner, you're perfect prey for them. They'll take you for what they can and then dump your calls/complaints into the black hole AKA owner's voicemail. With so many similar horrible experiences, I might just call the Better Business Bureau to have them look into their shady business practices. read more

I've used Burkell 3 times and each time they were courteous, reliable and was very pleased with their work. Most recently, my furnace was not working. The morning I called them they were able to send someone out to repair it. Erol was the repairman and he was very professional and found the problem immediately. Luckily it was only a small device that needed to be replaced. He replaced the part and the furnace is working again. A few months ago I had a toilet replaced, and again I was very pleased with the service. My experience with Burkell has been extremely good and I would definitely use them again if needed. read more

This company is from management to secretary to tech a bunch of rip off artists. They charged my HOA almost $900 to replace a 1 1/2 inch union on the hot water tank they replaced less than 2 years ago. Of course they only gave a 1 year guarantee on their work When I questioned their bill I got the run around and still do not have an explanation of the work they performed that adds up to the bill. The best is that their repair leaked shortly after they left from their "repair" causing a flood in place of the original drip. When I finally got the owner on the phone he was a bully, took a fit like a child and hung up the phone. I am filing a BBB claim and will keep you informed. BE WARNED! We recently had a leak in our shower. Burkell came out to check, charged us $75 to tell us yes, there was a leak, but they would not cut into the sheet rock to fix it. We had to HIRE ANOTHER PERSON to cut the sheet rock so Burkell could come back to fix it. They then charged us $1,100 for a shower valve replacement which they would not tell me how much cost was part or service, just a flat fee. After all this it STILL LEAKED and we had to hire ANOTHER plumber who discovered they had installed in wrong!!! We called the owner to discuss this a week ago and he has yet to return our phone call. UNBELIEVABLY HORRIBLE BUSINESS!!! Since this experience we have heard nothing but horror stories about these people. BE WARNED!!! read more

Two representatives from Burkell came to my house to give me an estimate on a new water heater and household heater. They smelled very strongly like marijuanna, and seemed a little out of it. After checking out my situation, they gave me some brochures and some rough estimates. I asked if they could email me a bid, since I needed it in writing to compare to other companies. Four weeks later, I had to call the company 3 times to get the bid sent to me.
