It seems that more and more Burmese restaurants are popping up all around the Bay Area now. Always a nice treat to experience various flavors from around the world! Burma Choice is one of those that brings you tasty options inspired by Southeast Asian cuisine that you normally don't see around. The food, it's simply tasty. Dishes ranging from garlic noodles to fried eggplants to curry, you can't go wrong--although I do think there is really only 1 kind of curry base. The service is nice and attentive. Not the speediest, but they pay attention to you and are friendly. The food comes out quickly. The restaurant has your modern Asian inspired ambiance with a bar at the front (who doesn't have a bar anymore?). Although, I will say that dimly lite with a basketball game and high energy music doesn't seem to vibe for a Burmese restaurant. The dishes we ordered were good and we'd come back to try different things. A quick few notes: - The garlic noodles aren't as garlicky as I expected. I wanted super garlic in your face noodles, but these aren't the ones. You'll get nice subtle hints of garlic, but in the end you'll have breath that you're not ashamed of--not what I usually look for in a garlic noodle. - No dishes come with rice. Rice is extra even if you order curry. - The Burmese curry is the same base I'm their Chicken curry and appetizer. - their tea leaf salad is good, just wish it had more of the "tea" flavor. read more

Delicious! Came here for dinner last night. We had garlic noodles, basil lemongrass swai, and coconut chicken curry. Service was great - we were checked on a few times. I was craving for fried rice and found this place on Yelp. We ordered Kebat Chicken, Palata with chicken curry, and the Asian Fried Rice with shrimp. The Palata came out first. It's a roti, but the curry is very different than what I'm used to do. I can't explain the flavor. It was good though. The kebat chicken sounded really interesting with the mint and cilantro. It was spicy, but also very enjoyable. Lastly, the fried rice was also pretty good. The shrimp was fresh and perfectly cooked. There was a good amount of shrimp as well. It doesn't have as much salt as other fried rice. Not a bad thing :) Friendly staff & really fast service! Definitely worth another visit! read more

What a gem that we found! The good here is amazing! We've been there 2 times already and enjoyed it each time! I got the black pepper beef and fiery chic e dishes while visiting here. They were both really good! The food came out really quick and the servers were very attentive! The palata bread is really good as well and flaky served with a side of sauce. Ate here with my friends & we did a family-style dinner. We absolutely loved the Palata with chicken dip (I want to try the veggie dip next) & the House Noodles the best & we re-ordered those two for our 2nd round. I chose the Mango Chicken for our table and it was good but we didn't order it again for the 2nd round. None of us were really a fan of the pork-belly, and no one wanted to eat the rest of it. I was a bit disappointed with the Pineapple Fried Rice because the dish was not sweet overall-- only sweet in the pineapple bits... I wish the sweetness and flavor seeped through the rest of the dish. Walnut shrimp was standard. TEA. LEAF. SALAD. The most unique and delicious thing about Burmese food is that salad. Everything else on the menu is also delicious and flavorful. Lots of options between stir fries, curries, and noodles. It's surprising how busy they get during dinner time, as it's such an unassuming restaurant in the middle of a plaza with many other restaurants. Therefore, go early. read more

With our favorite local Burmese restaurant recently closing, we were on the hunt for a new go-to and were hoping that Burma Choice might be it. After a pretty solid sampling of the menu, I was left with one word echoing most clearly in my head, "fine". Everything was fine, but unfortunately it stopped there. Just fine. The dishes were decent, but they all lacked something that left me wanting. Tea Leaf Salad - Probably the best dish of the night. Very strong on the flavors, perhaps a little too strong, but still really enjoyable. I would have liked to have the option to have cabbage as the base instead of lettuce like I've seen at other Burmese restaurants, but it's not a deal breaker. Nan Gyi Thoke - Good flavor but really brought down by the texture of the noodles, which tasted and looked like overcooked spaghetti. Far too mushy. Coconut Noodle Soup - Too thick and saucy to really be called a soup, rather than tasting like it's own unique dish it just came across as an extra saucy version of the Nan Gyi Thoke. Not enough there to set it apart so I wouldn't recommend ordering both dishes. Eggplant Shrimp with Garlic Sauce - Another tasty dish, and the eggplant was cooked perfectly, but there were just simply not enough shrimp in the dish to make it feel worth it. Chicken Biryani - The least flavorful dish, which stands out in Burmese cuisine when all the dishes are packed with flavor. It was also pretty dry so this is easily ranked last for me among the dishes. All in all, it was a decent meal and I can see why people generally like it here, but for me it's just a little lacking. The Burma House noodle is highly reminiscent of Pad Thai, same flavor profile except without the spice. The noodle felt a bit undercooked and flavor could not soak through. Coconut rice was interesting, it's sweet and has a coconuty scent, paired well with the Swai fish main entree. Nothing stood out flavor wise on the fish dish but texture was good. Ambiance is amazing, beautifully and elegantly decorated. They provided a little lamp for the table when it got darker. read more

Had some relatives visit from out of town, and they wanted to try Burmese food, so Burma Choice it is since it's nearest to us! My husband and I online ordered about $200 worth of food for pickup. The portions overall were more than enough for one meal. We ordered 3 dishes to share -- samosas, Burmese chow mein, and fiery chicken. Each of us (5 people total) had our own individual dishes as well. I had the garlic noodles with chicken. - Samosas - Perfectly crispy with lots of filling with each bite! Just be careful not to burn yourself while enjoying! Use the dip to add more heat (spiciness). - Burmese chow mein - Probably a dish we wish we skipped. Al dente egg noodles with cabbage and red bell pepper. Eh, nothing too special/unique to it. Flavor is pretty much similar to the typical, fast food Asian chow mein dishes.  - Fiery chicken - Chicken and tofu pieces with a delicious, flavorful kick to them. I just wish the dish wasn't so oily! - Garlic noodles with chicken - Lots of perfectly al dente noodles with enough chicken meat for each bite. Amazing food. The food was flavorful and the service was extremely fast. We ordered salads first and before we finished ordering everything the salads already came! Unfortunately I forgot to take photos but we ordered the mango salad, tea salad, lamb curry, the curry noodles and the honey glazed shrimp. The mango salad was sweet, crunchy and very addicting it was definitely my favorite of the two salads. The tea salad was interesting it had a deeper flavor and felt a bit oily but good regardless. The lamb curry was a bit gamey and pretty oily. The honey glazed shirmp was slightly crunch and the sauce was creamy. For dessert we got the dried banana and jackfruit. I have a photo for this one. The desert came with ice cream. It was delicious, the outside was crunchy not too oily and on the inside the sweet banana was perfect combination with the in comparison tartness of the jackfruit. Fiery stir fried veggies with Coconut rice - Tad spicy as we ordered ours medium spicy but packed with Flavors. Pairs really well with coconut rice. If you had to try just one thing at this place, I'll recommend this. 2. Garlic noodles - Perfect egg noodles with garlicky taste. Soft and flavorful. Ask for their spicy sauce and just add a little - I mean really little to add that kick to your noodles. 3. Tea leaf salad - Crunchy with fresh tea leaf taste. Unique. Must order. My new favorite go to restaurant!!! My husband and I were just looking for a new dinner place to go to one night and we're craving some good Asian food. It was cold and rainy so we wanted some Thai, and we typically frequent Thai Grata in blossom hill for some comfort food. That's when we saw this place and walked in, a new Burmese restaurant we haven't tried yet that was nearby. We typically love Burmese but haven't found a decent Burmese place in our area, so we were a bit skeptical. When we arrived the host was extremely welcoming and sat us and our baby down right away. Shortly after he noticed a draft of wind coming in and offered to move us to another seat in case we were cold, which I thought was so thoughtful. The ambiance of the restaurant was also very nice and clean, a bit fancy with leather seats and pretty lighting, good for a date night or celebration. Looking at the menu we saw a lot of our favorite dishes, including the infamous tea leaf salad and other favorites line black pepper chicken and Burmese noodles. I was SO excited to see a pumpkin stew that had kabocha squash which is my absolute favorite squash of all time. We ordered the tea leaf salad, black pepper beef, Burma noodles with beef, and veggie pumpkin stew. The dishes came out basically immediately, I was so impressed by how quick the service was. The tea leaf salad was amazing and so flavorful. The right crunch, rich tea flavor, but also light and refreshing. 5/5 Burma noodles tasted like a better and less sweet version of pad Thai. The black pepper beef was also so tender and flavorful. And the pumpkin stew...absolutely divine if you like a lot of veggies and creamy butternut squash soup texture. Everything here I've tried is solid, and also fairly priced to either eat alone or share with others. This will definitely be a go to restaurant for sure for us. Highly recommend!! read more

Went here on a Saturday night for dinner! The place was busy but my partner and I didn't wait for too long and were seated outside. We got the Tea Leaf Salad, Asian Fried Rice (brown rice with BBQ pork), and the House Noodle (with tofu). All three were amazing - didn't get a good pic of the salad because we immediately started devouring it. The fried rice was very flavorful and refreshing. I remember going to Burma Superstar in the city eons ago, waiting in line for an hour, and having delicious Burmese food for the first time. I had not had Burmese in a super long time until a friend suggested that we go to one. A quick Yelp search brought us here and I am so glad we came here. The food was excellent. Burma Choice's food was phenomenal! We ordered the fiery vegetables, shrimp pineapple fried rice, basil lemongrass chicken, and chicken lettuce wraps. The chicken lettuce wraps were our appetizer and came out fairly quickly. Although the lettuce to topping ratio was off, we enjoyed this dish a lot. We like that the lettuce was romaine lettuce because it gave the lettuce wrap, more structure and more crunch. The topping was very tasty. It was cooked perfectly and paired well with the sauce. It wasn't too salty and was very flavorful. The main dishes that came out were the shrimp, pineapple, fried rice, basil, lemongrass chicken, and fiery vegetables. The fiery vegetables were by far my favorite. I really enjoyed the flavor of the sauce on the dish and the vegetables and tofu were just phenomenal. The other dish I really enjoyed was the pineapple fried rice. I usually don't eat fried rice pineapple but this fried rice hit different. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the flavor of the rice was pretty tasty. The basal lemongrass chicken was something I've never had before. I'm more used to the Thai basil chicken that you get at Thai restaurants, whereas this is a Burmese restaurant. The flavor was good and the chicken was very tender and moist. Lastly, I was given a birthday dessert. This dessert was composed of orange slices and vanilla ice cream. I really like that. They added the orange slices because they gave the vanilla ice cream a creamsicle kind of flavor and added to the aesthetic of the dessert. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at this restaurant. From the menu here, it looked like a standard dish was the black pepper stirfry, which (listed in various places in the menu) you could get with chicken, beef, lamb, pork, fish, or shrimp. Figuring it would be heavily seasoned, which it was, I went for the pork which was less expensive. Reminded me in style of one of the heavier Mongolian beef-type dishes. The meat was excellent, well-cooked and with a little fat as pork should. Not a lot of veggie matter, so I'm glad I got this with steamed rice. There were some onions and bell peppers, as the menu said, but most of the veggie was pea pods (not snow peas), which were not listed on the menu. I don't much like peas, though the sauce was heavy enough that it didn't much matter, and the number of pods not really large, but that was a little irritating. Service quick and good. I don't know what happened this evening, but the food was not half as good as it usually was and our server forgot to give us our dish and we have to sit for a while before getting it. The sesame beef was chewy and overcooked and the fried rice with shrimp have no flavor. Sorry we were disappointed tonight. I was surprised that Burma Choice had just been open for five months since it seemed like they were running a busy business with lots of people there on a late Saturday at lunch time. The coconut noodle soup was really delicious and I really liked the rainbow salad - though my dining companion was less impressed with the salad. The lettuce wraps with shrimp were okay; I think I had expected whole shrimp and not cut up into tiny pieces. I appreciated that they have a good sized menu with a lot of vegetarian options. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! I knew word was going around that Burma Choice was a fantastic restaurant and I was right. From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. The restaurant feels cozy and comfortable. The staff made my friend and I feel welcomed and it was a journey from there on. My friend and I ordered the rainbow salad, the pumpkin pork stew and the Burmese house noodles. Everything that we had, took us to flavor town. Each item and every bite had so much flavor and I am not joking around. I love Burmese cuisine and it never disappoints me. I love the fact that the restaurant is doing an incredible job by knocking home run after home run right out the door. The pumpkin pork stew was fork tender and the pumpkins were soft and there was plenty of pork and pumpkins in that savory stew. There are 22 ingredients in the rainbow salad and when mixed together, it is fresh and takes you to heaven. The Burmese house noodles kind of tastes like a pad Thai but has more flavor to it. So if you're in the South San Jose area, try out Burma Choice and see where it takes your taste buds too! read more

Pretty solid Burmese Not perfect, but there were some highlights. The tea leaf salad is one of the better ones I've had recently. I appreciate that it was mixed at the table and the toasted garlic was particularly crunchy and delicious. Palata was just OK, not super flaky, but hot and tasty enough to still satisfy. We also tried a sweet and spicy fish fillet dish. It was not bad, but with some coconut rice it was a good end to the meal. Service was attentive and pretty fast. Service was not that good, the garlic noodles had no taste and we had to really add a bunch of soy sauce and hot sauce. The chicken salad was just plain ok. The lamb was still really good. Shrimp rolls were good. But I don't recall getting any refill on water. Not one did anyone ask how everything was. Two of the persons who we flagged down couldn't understand my request for hot sauce or comments about the lack of taste on the noodles. ======== What a fantastic find! I'm glad we met here for dinner. I didn't even know this existed. Was pleasantly surprised to see how packed it was inside when we arrived (Sat evening at around 6:30pm). Fried pork belly appetizer was perfectly crispy and mildly spiced with seasoning similar to Chinese five spice and came with a sweet chili sauce. Burmese food is something I'm always excited to see because I find it to be an interesting combination different cuisines. So I really wanted to like this place as it's always nice to see small businesses that bring something new to the area. The pumpkin stew and shrimp and garlic eggplant were good. They were pretty flavorful and well made but nothing that truly impressed me. The Burma Crispy chicken was unfortunately the most disappointing dish that we had. It reminded me most of orange chicken and I was hoping for something spicier and more flavorful. The coconut rice was outstanding I will say, very sweet and delicious. Overall I was just hoping for a more authentic experience with bolder flavors. The service was good and when we walked in I was excited at the prospect of being here. Normally a restaurant is great at customer service and ok on food or vice versa. Burma is great on customer and great on food. Order the appetizer curry chicken loved to flavors from the curry to the coconut milk tender morsels of chicken the palata was fresh And delicious. Ordered the spicy chicken they were friend perfectly the outer batter reminded me a chicken nugget the sauce they were coated in were sweet yet spicy . Between the sauce and the batter is where all the flavors were held, the chicken bites lacked seasoning. Also ordered the lamb which was stir fired with onion bell peppers and chill peppers. This dish was delicious rich with flavors of cumin and slivers of Thai Basil and tender. The chicken friend rice with egg spot on. Excellent and exactly what I expected. I don't usually go for Burmese food, but I was really happy that Burma Choice happened to be in the neighborhood. There is plenty of parking as the restaurant is in the same plaza as Sweet Retreat, TLeaf Teapresso, and Armadillo Willy's. BURMA CHOICE NOODLE: 5/5 If I had to describe this, this is a different take on traditional Pad Thai, but in a good way. It is definitely sweeter than Pad Thai and tangy but without the taste of tamarind! These noodles were amazing, and it was a group favorite. For me, this was the most memorable dish. Chicken was juicy and flavorful. I do wish the portions were a bit larger for this dish, but I would totally get this again. SAMOSAS: 4.5/5 This hit the spot! This was pretty standard, so I wouldn't say anything in particular about this appetizer was special. The samosas were flakey and crunchy with a ton of filling. I wish they included more than 4 samosas since it's not enough if you're eating with other people. PALATA W/ CURRY DIP: 4.5/5 The roti bread was super fluffy and flakey, which was exactly how I like it! It's not too thick but also not too thin, and you can taste the light layer of butter. The dip was flavorful although I didn't really care that much for it and preferred to eat the roti alone. CHICKEN BIRYANI: 2.75/5 I didn't really care for this, and I found the chicken to be really dry. The rice was firmer and not as fluffy as we were expecting as well. Tried this place randomly a weekend and had a lovely experience. The food was very good and the portions are massive! My date had the chicken Biriyani and it was very reasonably priced, as well as being enough food for two people. We also had the Palata with coconut chicken curry, which was VERY good. The roti were tasty and the right amount of chewiness. I had the Kebat Beef and it was soooooo good. The beef was delicious and the sauce it was in was so tasty. It had really good spice, but not overwhelming, though I had coconut rice with it (made it too sweet) and my only suggestion would be get white rice instead. The best curry of my life and the best palata EVER (I know they have something similar in Indian cuisine called Paratha). This is definitely something I would crave.
