This place was great! As soon as we walked in, we were happily greeted by the people behind the counter. They were patient with my husband and I since we'd never been here and wanted to briefly study the menu to figure out what looked good. We ended up getting the top 4 burritos on the menu. We sat down, and were served free salsa and chips, which tasted very good. They brought out the burritos. Now I've heard the burritos here are small (which would explain the fact that they are around $3 each) so I knew to get more than one per person, which is why we ordered four. As we bit into our burritos, they were simple but so juicy and tasty... and then they were gone in a few bites (with a pause for me to take a photo of half eaten burritos). Now I am a lady who can eat like a horse. But I can also control myself. So, two small burritos with chips and salsa is enough to keep me content for an hour or two. I do wish that they filled the burritos with just a little more filling though... please? Heehee. Oh I didn't even go through the burritos we ordered yet! Here they are: Chicharron: This is the fried pork rinds, right? So whoa, never saw this in a burrito before, had to try it. Ok, I'm not a huge fan of pork rinds... but this was flavor town! Of course, since there was delicious sauce and it was wrapped in a tortilla, these pork rinds were not crispy therefore the texture's a bit weird, but you get used to it. And since it's chicharron, I got that kinda gamey (I'm not sure how else to describe it) aftertaste, which is fine, but not something I love. However, because it packed so much flavor, I could overlook that and get this again in the future. Birria: de res. Which means of beef. I'm slowly learning more and more Spanish the longer I live here (I've been in SoCal not that long). I'm not sure what birria is. I used to think it meant goat, but I think it's more of a way of cooking meat. I'll look it up later. Whatever it is, it is good. It is flavor. I think there may have been some warm spices in it. Tinga: This is chicken with chipotle sauce and potatoes (I think, trying to use my memory here). This was very tasty and my very favorite. I don't know what else to say. Oh the juices were dripping like crazy out of this one (but they dripped pretty well out of most of the others too... this one just a little more. The deshebrada was second juiciest. Speaking of... Deshebrada: I had to look it up and it seems like all I can conclude is that it means "shredded beef", this one comes with tiny potatoes, too. This was good, but I guess out of the four, this was my least favorite. It didn't taste or look like the birria (different color), which confused me because they're both beef, but maybe two different cuts/ styles of beef. This beef was a bit more bland. Yet as stated before, it was the second juiciest burrito. Is that good? Is it bad? I don't know, I'm just being informative. I like juiciness. But it's messy. Holy crap I wrote too much. Well, I hope this at least helps anyone who was wondering, "how the heck does each burrito taste?" Because I covered almost all of them except for the ones with beans and cheese. The rolled tacos are made from scratch and have that stretchy dough & savoriness that makes the best tortillas. The best is the beans taco: it is so savory and delicious. Finally tried this spot out, had the birria burrito. The tortilla is pretty good, nice homemade chewy flavor, the birria is decent as well, but it's a little bland for my taste, I like it with more spices, seasoning. The salsa I didn't care for, more tomato flavor than anything else, throw some árbol, chipotle, something in there. Overall 3/5, not the worst, but nowhere near 5/5 like others claim. read more

Came here after all the reviews. I personally liked the shredded beef, that burrito was probably the best one there. Everyone raves about the bean burrito but quite honestly I've had better. That's why I give it three stars because their main burrito is the bean, but to my liking it's the shredded beef. Regardless, try it for yourself they do have really good burritos. read more

When I say exactly I mean the flavor of the beans, size of the burrito and even down to the way they are rolled. I took my discerning aunt to this place and she agreed! Recently (August 2020) some friends were staying with me and they wanted some birria (spiced shredded beef) from LA. I remembered that La Palma had it on their menu. We eat these mini burritos all the time. The menu is actually pretty extensive but I have only tried the five different burritos. While the tortilla is always delicious, I was definitely cheated on the filling today. I got two "con todo" burritos but it was light on the birria and beans. I basically got a quesadilla. La Palma might not be the best birria in town anymore but because it had Jonathan Gold's stamp of approval, this place will always have a huge following. read more

Came here for the handmade flour tortillas. Very disappointed because the tortillas seem to be pre-made. The taste is not bad but is definitely not worth the drive. These burritos here are BOMB dot com! Let me tell you the ingredients: beans, cheese, and shredded beef (with a little bit of some potatoes) all rolled up in a handmade flour tortilla. It's so simple yet soooo good. They also got some very FLAVORFUL salsa, and we all know one of the things us Mexicans judge the place by is SALSA. It's all about that flavoooor. Also, they sell their handmade tortillas in packets if you were interested in taking some on your way home. Everybody should come try this place! It's like a hidden gem here in El Monte. The place is pretty tiny, like a hole in the wall type of place, but I've never had a problem with parking here (even though they have few parking spaces). I usually just order my food by phone and then take it to go so I can enjoy the burritos at home. Speaking of which, they also have other options on their menu such as quesadillas. Oh, and they also sell a big block of cheese in their fridge lol. When it comes to service, I've never had a problem. I feel like sometimes it takes some time for them to prepare your meal though (which is why I call ahead of time because I get hangry! Lol). So, just keep that in mind. Overall, a great place. Decent spot and easy to access. I went on weekend at lunch and to my surprise it wasn't packed. Apparently I ordered the wrong combo! I ordered the 3 burritos (2 birria 1 chicken) with the Mexican Coke. The birra burritos were darn tasty and juicy. The chicken and potato burrito I wasn't a fan off. While the food was good. I wouldn't see myself coming back because there are so many burrito/taco spots in the area. However after the fact I realized I should have ordered the PLATILLO ESPECIAL. I first tried Burritos La Palma about a week ago, and am totally obsessed. (Not kidding. We've been here like four times in the past week.) Their burritos and quesadillas are all incredibly delicious, and the staff are all super friendly and quick to get your order out. During COVID, they're offering take-out through a walk-up window, and it feels really easy to stay distant from other customers while in line and waiting for the order. It's hard to pick a favorite, so it's a good thing that you need about three burritos for a very filling meal (two if you're a lightish eater). The tortillas are so delicious that the quesadillas are really wonderful, too. But I'd say the platillo especial, the deshembrada, and the birria/queso/frijoles are our favorites. read more

Don't do what I did. As a flour tortilla lover, I regretted not buying a whole bag of tortillas upon first bite, because I hear Burritos La Palma offers such a tremendous public service. The tortillas here are supple and chewy, making the Mission tortillas you grew up eating feel like gas station bathroom paper towels. The size and no-bullshit nature of the fillings really allow the tortillas to shine. They're like the form factor of a burrito at the size of a large a taco. I ordered a "con todo" and a chicharron. Unpopular opinion: I really love the chicharron the best. Anything that includes fried pig skin, in my opinion, is a perfect food, and this is no exception. But you can't really go wrong with any of them. I'll come back for the platillo especial, two burritos smothered in in salsa with beans on the side. I had business in the area, so I came to Burritos La Palma even though it was nearly 20 miles out of my way. I arrived at their walk-up window shortly after 11 am opening. Thought I might have to wait as there were two others before me. Turns out they were waiting for their orders, and by the time I got to the window, the other customers had departed. I ordered the Platto Especial. After I paid, I had time to walk about ten feet away and turn around, when they called my name. The to-go bag had the meal in a styrofoam clamshell, plus a kit with plastic utensils, salt and pepper and plenty of napkins. In the clamshell was a tiny salad (some lettuce and a slice of tomato), about 1/3 cup of refried beans, and two of their Zacatecas style burritos smothered in sauce. Jonathan Gold hit it on the spot when he told of its being one of the five best burritos in LA. The burritos were fabulous, although I'm not sure what kind of meat was involved (I think it was beef). The heat was barely moderate, and the flavors were exquisitely blended into one another in both the filling and the sauce. The refried beans were also a homerun. read more

FINALLY got to check the last spot off Jonathan Gold's Top 5 Burrito List. Since it is a bit far from the rest of the list, I had to make sure I got the full experience. I do not recommend ordering what I ordered today, unless you have a really big appetite. I got the 3 burrito combo that comes with a drink directly followed by a quesadilla con todo. They serve complimentary chips and salsa as well. These burritos are not standard size, I wouldn't consider them mini, as 2-3 could fill you up quickly. The quesadilla is basically the same size as the burrito with a little more filling and served flat. The Birria is the true star here, and "con todo" is with cheese and frijoles added. If you like it cheesy I would go with con todo. I enjoyed the chicharron and tinga (chicken and potato) as well. If you're in El Monte make sure to check this place out. read more

This place is sooooo good! First off, super cool little place. Looks like a bungalow but when you get in it's really clean! The tortillas are homemade and you can taste the difference! It's so yummy!!! I had the bean and cheese (great for vegetarians) and the barria con todo. THE CON TODO IS THE BEST!! Beans cheese barria with their delicious salsa on homemade tortilla! One will not Fill you up but they're reasonably priced so you can get three for under $7 and be so satisfied knowing its quality!
