A unique treat - what a fun find. We each had the steak and mushroom pie - very rich and filling with a light tasty crush. One pie was plenty for lunch for me. So many other things looked great and since I don't live that close - I had to take some home - a couple of other meat pies, a bacon and cheese scone and a berry gallette. Have only had the bacon/cheese scone so far and it was a winner. Oh and their breads - took home a sour dough bagette and it was about the best I've ever had. Crusty and perfect chewy-ness. Phenomenal is all I have to say! I have visited BurtoNZ on several occasions and have never been let down, but I will admit it has always been savory dishes so I cannot comment on their sweet treats and or artisan breads. BurtoNZ is an easy in and out cafe, located in a smallish strip mall in Windsor, so expect easy parking with crazed grocery shopper drivers everywhere. The staff has always been welcoming and is willing to wait while I drool and make the impossible decision of which loaded caloric pie I am about to devour. My go to seems to be the steak and cheese, I am not 100% what cheese they use, but mixed with a flaky crusted pie and tasty cooked steak, it is heaven in a dish. I have also had the steak and potato topped pie, which is a runner up from the three I have had, so no love loss there! Average cost for the savory pies which easily can fill you up is $6.50, so do not let the size fool you. On a side note, I really need to bite the bullet though and grab one of their sweet treats so I can give a accurate review of this wonderful bakery. Is it deserving of a five star or am I just writing this review hungry dreaming about a savory pie...I will let you decide for yourself, but honestly they are a 4.5/5 in my books! read more

Food is amazing! Who has time to take pictures when you can instead tuck in to an amazing pie or sausage roll. Granted I'm from NZ and even went to the same high school as the owner, so the extra taste of home makes me just a tad biased. Even so I've brought plenty of friends here and everyone has had wonderful things to say! Desserts are great too (lamingtons, cream donuts, apple slices, or my personal fav custard squares), and goodness gracious their bread is fantastic. You can also take things home cold and bake them yourself, which I do every single time. All the employees are nice and helpful, and the owners Warren and Bobbi are extremely kind and friendly! I love bakeries, and I especially love this bakery. They have so many things that I wanted and that's not so typical in a bakery for me. I eventually ended up spending a lot of money since I couldn't make up my mind. Besides their delicious desserts, I love their meat pies. This is something I always have loved but could never find wherever I've lived, so I was happy to see they sold them here. Their sausage roll was also delicious and worked well for breakfast. Wow, just wow. What a great place. A co-worker of mine was eating a very interesting pastry the other day. I asked him what it was. "Coconut macaroon," he said with a mouthful. The way he was rolling his eyes prompted me to ask where he got it. "BurtoNZ Bakery" he said. "They also have meat pies. The curry pie is pretty good. The guy who runs the place is from New Zealand, and he's a pretty good baker" he continued. Wait, meat pies. I have got to get up there as soon as I can. For about the next 24 hours I obsessed about going and getting a New Zealand meat pie. I'd never had a New Zealand meat pie before, but I love Australian meat pies. Well, now I love me some New Zealand meat pies too. The shop is in a Safeway shopping center. Tucked away in the corner. Upon entry, you see a very clean and cozy little dining area. The offerings are on a chalk board. They have bread that looked fantastic, the day's selection of savory pies, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs (holy crap!!), and a good selection of sweet pastries. I ordered the steak and potato top pie and a sausage roll. Both were wonderful. The pie was seasoned just right and the pastry was a great compliment to the filling - or is that the other way around? The sausage roll was very well seasoned with a lot of meat. Finishing both off was a very pleasant challenge. For a total of under $11, this was meal a very good value. I could have easily been satisfied with the pie alone. The owner is very friendly and stopped to chat with us for quite a while. He grows some of his own herbs and said he will bring in tomatoes from his garden when they are ripe to add to the pies. This will be a regular stop for me at lunch. I just have to try to limit myself to a reasonable size meal. Highly recommended. read more

When I heard about this place I knew it was a must try while visiting Sonoma County. I had been to New Zealand a few years ago and had their savory meat pies, had a hankering and was delighted with this find. The egg and bacon pie for breakfast had a moist tasty filling with a rich buttery flaky pastry. My mom had a Scotch egg. It is extremely well spiced and excellent. I had never tasted one before and now I am enamored with them. We had blueberry and orange cranberry scones which we saved for our afternoon tea. They were moist and buttery with the exact correct proportion of fruit to dough so that you get some fruit in every bite. And moist!! Not dry and brittle like I've had elsewhere. Tonight I'm having the sausage roll and steak and mushroom pie for dinner. I forgot to ask how to reheat and telephoned the bakery. 20 minutes at 300 F the nice staff said. Service was friendly and efficient. I will go there every time I'm in Sonoma area!! read more

Food is excellent, customer service is lacking. I've been supporting this local business for several years and have always enjoyed their food. I was quite disappointed to go there recently and since I didn't have enough cash for my purchase, and I didn't qualify for their credit card minimum, they gave me no option but to leave without purchasing anything. I gladly would have brought them the $2 on my next visit or they could have offered to run my credit card...but they just stared at my blankly when I told them I didn't have enough cash. I'm a Kiwi and know meat pies. Thank you to BB cos I get a taste of home without a flight. I drive 1.5 hrs to eat pies a few times a year. Pies are yummy and the cream buns. It is TOO DEAR for the regular pies, $7. I suggest they lower the regular pies and keep specialty pies at $7... a bit of a rip off. I'm sure all your ingredients are local and not being flown in from NZ. read more

We wanted to buy a couple of their buttery plain croissants to make sandwiches at home, but they were completely out altho it was only 1p. Word has gotten around, I guess. I've never gone to a bakery where I wasn't seated like a restaurant but still had to tip... she gave me a choice but I didn't realize it was a $25 tip.... she held that pin pad from afar & I wasn't even allowed to press it or see it properly... not happy about that at all & wont be going back. Tldr. Pie was so so but their sausage rolls was very very good. Got the steak and cheese pie, found the pie to be very wet. The cheese was a little too much. Wished I went for the steak and mushroom instead. They didn't have any plain mince pies either, only like a mince and cheese. Maybe it's a new Zealand thing.. I also almost wished it was baked longer because the bottom felt a tad too soft for my liking. The sausage rolls blew me away though and what will keep bringing me back. Delicious pork filling with a hint of fennel and very very juicy. Reminds me of burke Street bakery rolls from Sydney. The puff pastry again felt like it could have been in the oven for a smidge longer but it was exceptional regardless. Bought some cold sausage rolls to go home for self baking and I'm super excited for that. read more
