First off, we were celebrating a special occasion. This is one of those special occasions places for us middle class people, and if I'm going to spend a decent amount of money, it better be worth it. Well... Dawson's was worth it. We started out with the lobster Mac and cheese. Not hyperbole....I've been to the East Coast, and I can honestly say this is the best iteration of lobster Mac I've ever eaten. A good amount of lobster permeated the dish...cooked well, too. I ordered the Australian wagyu based on a server's recommendation. I also got the house steak sauce. The steak was so tender and flavorful, I stopped using the steak sauce. I would advise to not use any sauce...eat it as is. That's how well they cooked and seasoned it. The whipped potatoes were much better than the steak sauce as a "topping," and the creamed spinach was decadent. Essentially, a near perfect meal. My orange creamsicle creme brulee was tasty...not much orange flavor, but good nonetheless. Out server was very attentive, ensuring we were well taken care of. It was ok, can't really say better or worse - average. You aren't going to be having a Golden Steer experience here, might as well just go to a chain restaurant (Morton's for example destroys this place). Service was weak and slow despite a reservation and half capacity- never saw our waiter again after food was delivered. Food was pretty good but nothing to write home about, mine was overcooked and dry... asked for medium received a shoe. House salad was ok but had mysterious extremely hard bits in it (idk luckily no cracked teeth). Best part was the Godfather drink by far; I actually really enjoyed it. Wouldn't go back. We initially were going to try Dawsons on Monday but apparently they are closed Sunday and Monday, kinda weird. Anyways my daughter and I made reservations for 6 pm after eating at a different steakhouse on Monday (see my other reviews). We were greeted promptly and shown to our table. The ambiance is quiet and kinda stuffy, like an old school steakhouse which isn't really my jam. But we moved forward anyways, I ordered the elk chop which was just slightly overcooked I asked for medium rare it was more medium. Came on a Friday night for a bday dinner w/the bestie. Parking garage is attached and they will validate, but we just used valet at the Hyatt Regency hotel entrance for convenience. If you love it and even if you don't, it's one of the best carrot cakes I've ever had. The caramel is oozing and the crispy carrot shavings on top looked fantastic and tasted light, crispy and delicious. A year later and I'm here again for dine downtown week. We made reservations for Saturday night for dinner. We all opted for the dine downtown menu. We enjoyed the complimentary bread and butter. The place was busy when we seated as well, but service was still great. The place was nice and a lot of diners were enjoying dinner as well. We ordered drinks and they were brought out promptly. We also ordered truffle fries for the table to share (not on the DD menu). For DD 2026, I got the roasted squash soup, and got to try the fried rice kimchi arincini, but prefer the soup. We all opted for the eye of prime rib, which comes with a creamed kale flan, fingerling potatoes and butter sauce. It was great. For dessert, I got the chocolate banana tart, and got to try the extra virgin olive oil cake. I preferred the chocolate tart. This was an overall great DD experience and I will see if I went to go back next year (have to try new restaurants as well). read more

First time visiting Dawson's! I had a gift card from Downtown Sacramento Partnerships and was excited to visit somewhere new to me. I made a reservation through Open Table, and it was quick and easy to book a table for the following night. When we arrived, we were seated without a wait, but after about 15 minutes, I noticed we weren't receiving any service. I asked the host, and there seemed to be a miscommunication between our servers. Once it was resolved, the night flowed smoothly, and our new server was extremely apologetic. He asked us if we were celebrating anything special and offered a comped dessert on the house for our anniversary. Once service started, we had a great experience. We received bread refills and I loved the unique cuts of meat on their menu. I ordered the Grilled Elk Chops, which our server had good things to say as an avid hunter. It wasn't too gamey, and I really enjoyed the pan sauce it was served with. My partner ordered the burger, and he said it was decent, nothing spectacular. We both enjoyed the table serving of sprouts and would order them again. For dessert, we got the Peanut Butter Chocolate Molten Cake to share. Dawson's is known for their Carrot Cake, but we thought this was an amazingly decadent treat to satisfy our sweet tooth! Dawson's is located inside the Hyatt on the first floor. I was hoping that the vibe would be more intimate here, but there were some rowdy tables the night of our visit. We shared the Caesar and it was so good -- perfect white anchovies, and even the bread was genuinely great. I had the ribeye medium rare with truffle butter, bf had the ribeye with garlic butter -- both incredible. Cooked perfectly, super flavorful, exactly what you want. The mushrooms are a must. Drinks were on point -- a dirty vodka martini with blue cheese olives and a beautiful cab that paired perfectly with the steaks. Dessert... graham cracker crust, dulce de leche, banana, coffee whipped cream -- honestly heavenly. Service was amazing too -- wish I remembered our server's name because he really made the night. We ordered scallops, caviar, and truffle fries for appetizers. All of it was excellent!! The sauce on the scallops was divine. Entrees: 4 filets that came with a roasted garlic and tomatoes- it added a perfect sweetness to each bite. Elk was cooked perfectly and came with this INCREDIBLE potatoe square. That potato should have been adored as one of the sides it was so damn good. NY strip We paid extra for garlic butters and truffle butters for each steak (didn't see any of that on the steaks but maybe it had melted) as well as chimichurri and bearnaise sauces. The bearnaise was awful - it was basically like milk with no flavor. Sides: mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, they were good. Throughout the meal we also ordered several cocktails. Before our entrees came we asked to see the dessert menu (we like to see what desserts they have so we know if we need to save room). The server responded with "let me bring out your food first". Again he wasn't rude, but it felt like we were being scolded, as we weren't demanding to see it right this second. Desserts: we ordered the carrot cake (3 out of 5), it was a little dry. Pumpkin cheesecake was creamy (4 out 5). Chocolate peanut butter molten cake (3 out of 5) - this cake was extinct as there was -0- molten going on. Flavor was ok but when it says molten, you expect it to be moist and it to be "molten". None of that was the case. Huckleberry sorbet (5 out of 5). My husband and I have made it a tradition to go to a new steakhouse every year for my birthday. So this year my husband made a reservation at Dawson's on Open Table. It's located inside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Sacramento. So we left or truck with the valet, and it was located right off the front entrance. The restaurant was dark and moody, and very romantic. Each table had a soft light in the middle and the pictures on the wall made it feel like an old classic restaurant. Side-note: There is no bathroom inside the restaurant so if you have to use the restroom, use the one outside of it in the hotel lobby. Now onto the food! Kyle was our server and he gave us excellent recommendations and he was a joy to talk to. First he recommended the deviled eggs for an appetizer and they were wonderful! My husband, who has never liked deviled eggs, was so in love with them that he was asking about the ingredients. The bread that came complementary was warm and delicious. For our steaks, my husband got the ribeye and I got the Wagyu. They were both cooked perfectly to our liking. Kyle recommended the garlic butter for the top and it was wonderful. Plus the grilled half garlic that comes with a steak that you can smash with your fork adds so much flavor to every bite! We got the mushrooms on the side and the brussels sprouts, as well as the whipped potatoes. Everything was a 5 out of ! And for dessert we got the carrot cake. Again recommended by Kyle and it was absolutely delicious! It was topped with these slivers of thin, candied carrot chips, that just took it over the top. And since it was my birthday it was complimentary! We have tried about six different steakhouses at this point and this is our new favorite. We will definitely be going back. I need to preface my review by mentioning that I came to Dawson's via the Sacramento Dine Downtown program. A great way to visit a restaurant with an accompanying 3 course tasting menu. On this particular I and my fellow diners all had the same thing, course one was Kimchi "fried rice" Arrancini , course two was an Eye of prime rib with fingerling potatoes with a horse radish butter and course three was a Chocolate Banana Tart. While each of the courses were good and looked quite lovely, as another reviewer so aptly put nothing was truly wrong, but it did not give me incentive to come back, it was just ok. The room is lovely the service was very good and the wait staff quite courteous,. I might try a second visit for a steak some day, but right now nothing in the immediate future. read more

Even reminded us to get our parking tickets validated before we left. Prob one of the best servers we've had in a while. Ambiance: 5/5 lights were dim, has a romantic vibes, perfect setting for date and place to dress up Food: 3/5 Kimchi "Fried Rice" Arancini balls: 5/5 this was my favorite. Deep fried and crispy to perfection and not overly oily. The salted sauce was delish and reminded me of something they serve at sushi places Roasted Acorn Squash Soup: 5/5 served in a carved out squash. Touch of sweetness, cheese added a touch of salty, and chips added some crunch. It was very pleasing blend that would go great with bread or chips. Eye of Prime Rib: 3/5 steak was cooked to perfection with a dollop of green sauce that had a hint of radish spice in it. It came with soft fingerling potatoes and a side of green flan which tasted it was a blend of vegetables. There was a clear difference in the portion size of the steak. If the same plate is going to the same table, the size should be the same so we wouldn't be irked by the difference. I think the plate choice and presentation of the steak could have been better. I feel like the plate was too dark and the dish needed a pop of color. Not a bad dish, but not exceptional and I feel like it needed a touch more seasoning. Chocolate Banana Tart: 3/5 the flavors were great and I love the presentation and crispy banana chip. However, the chocolate used to cup in filling was too hard. It was awkward to break apart with my fork and felt like too much pressure would cause a crumb to fly across the table. I would have loved it to be a soft brownie or soft cake to make it easier to eat Olive oil cake: 4/5 moist and the flavor was light. I also had some sort of a floral sent. Enjoyed this over the banana tart since it was easier to eat The service was stellar but the food was just good, not exceptional. Whenever our in-laws are in town, we always take them to Dawson's for a lovely meal. My FIL absolutely loves this place, and we've grown to as well. Most recently, we dined here with them and our 9 month old, and they were incredibly accommodating, which I was worried about with an infant. We all enjoyed our meal and had a great time. We really love the sauce with the pot pie. . Main entree was the braised short rib with beef, which I found a bit dry so I replaced it with the market fish. My friends beef short rib was better than mines. . Market fish for dine downtown was monk fish. It was so good my friend kept on attacking my plate. I say that I always have good taste and she always steal my food, she lucky I love her or else no more bites next time. . Mont blanc for dessert was amazing. Everything was hot and well seasoned. I really wasn't a fan of the short rib. It was over cooked for my taste. My husband's rib eye was perfect. I loved his and wished I'd also gotten the rib eye. I was offered another dish but I knew my husband would eat my leftovers. So I opted to not get anything different but I appreciate that they did offer something different. We went to Dawson's Steakhouse expecting a classic steakhouse evening and what we found was an experience that was perfectly acceptable but quietly forgettable. Nothing was truly wrong and yet nothing lingered with us once the plates were cleared. The service was attentive and courteous and we were well looked after throughout the meal. We ordered the ribeye and the New York strip and asked for medium and medium rare. Both arrived undercooked and lacked the richness and depth you hope for at this level. The steaks were fine but uninspired and for the price there should have been more care and more character on the plate. The Dawson's steak sauce did nothing to improve the experience and was frankly not enjoyable. It felt like an afterthought rather than a complement to the meat. The sides followed the same theme serviceable but unremarkable. Dawson's is a comfortable place with a polished atmosphere and solid service but the food never rose to meet the promise of the menu or the pricing. I was on business in Sacramento a few weeks back, staying in the hotel and decided to try their restaurant at the strong recommendation of the lobby staff. I wandered in to the half empty restaurant to be told by a fairly condescending greeter that they couldn't possibly fit me in and perhaps I'd be more comfortable at the bar. The restaurant remained half empty during my time there, but I went and sat at the bar. Three bar staff on duty, all of whom were much more interested in a discussion about cocktail ingredients that they were in serving the sole customer in the bar. No sign of proper customer service in this establishment! For dinner I had lobster Mac and cheese followed by a braised boar shank. The Mac and cheese was poor. Not macaroni, but that shouldn't make much difference. Cheese sauce had no flavour...closer to a plain white sauce. There was a decent amount of lobster, but it too was bland. On to the mains. Boat shank was the smallest I've ever seen; lucky to have had 4oz of meat. It was just about cooked, cold in spots, and certainly not the fork tender delight I was expecting. There was a purée of some sort...bland enough that I couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. Also served with a nasty bitter radicchio, which I barely touched. Wonderful dinner at Dawson's Steakhouse! Started with a very enjoyable bartender serving us perfect martinis in the bar. We sat down for dinner and had a fabulous Caesar salad, then a filet cooked perfectly, mine with truffle butter and Bernaise sauce. Unfortunately they just served a crap ton of alcohol with the pre fixe menu. It was a five course meal.... With wine or champagne served with every course. 1. Cold scallops - sent back and reserved cold again. 2. Pork belly...cold, tough, fatty. Sent back and reserved warm but not hot 3. Duck...saltier than an anchovy. Sent back and didn't want it reserved. You can't remove salt. 4. Filet mignon ...outstanding. Cooked properly and so tender. Stick with what you know chef! 5. Dessert...Ball Drop! This course I found amusing. See picture and you'll understand why. All in all...too much food and too much alcohol. Would have rather had less of everything and better quality. Food should be served hot. I got to thinking maybe they were just trying to get us drunk so we wouldn't notice the food? Anyway, with having to send things back three times the manager really should've done something with our bill to compensate for all the issues. My boyfriend and I had dinner at Dawson's for date night, and overall it was a lovely experience. The interior is stunning: modern, classy, and elegant without feeling too stuffy. The customer service was top tier, our server was incredibly professional, and they even offered to hang my coat which was such a nice touch. I had the filet mignon and really enjoyed it, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The mashed potatoes were amazing too, creamy and well-seasoned. I also tried the green sauce (not sure what it was called--just went with the waiter's recommendation) and personally wasn't a fan at all, but that was just personal taste. My boyfriend ordered the Chef's Burger, and unfortunately, he thought it was pretty mid, nothing special, not bad, just underwhelming for a steakhouse burger. I was in town for my daughters bridal shower and we had such a long day shopping at the local mall and just running around. I said let's just crab a ride back to the hotel and try the steakhouse there. I'm so absolutely happy with this hotel that I wanted to have a killer piece of meat. Dawsons did not disappoint. Kiley and I both got the Brandt filet. She got the red wine sauce and got the usual béarnaise. Our wonderful waiter suggested we split this house salad and that was delicious too. I decided to get a glass of wine and decided on the Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc. Nowadays you get to choose from 3 sizes 3ounce, 5 ounce, or 8 ounce. I found this very curious since I don't drink very much. I really liked this wine and made sure I would remember it since I'm kinda picky when it comes to my alcohol. I'm a serious lightweight. This wine was the perfect balance for my meal. I know everyone thinks you need a red with meat but I don't agree with those outdated rules! I was a bit expensive but worth it. The service was impeccable. The only negative was a screaming baby at a nearby table. I literally don't understand couples that bring babies to these types of places. We'd been looking forward to trying this place all week to celebrate my 48th birthday. First impressions were great--the ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel welcome right away. Our server was fantastic: friendly, attentive, and quick. We brought our own bottle of wine, which they opened promptly, and the specials were explained in detail. I'd been craving a good steak, which I only eat a few times a year, so I was excited. I ordered the $100 dry-aged steak, my wife had the chef's special (swordfish), my son got a ribeye, and my friend ordered a different steak. We also got the mac and cheese and asparagus as sides. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the experience we were hoping for. It took about 45 minutes to arrive, even though the restaurant was only about 30% full. My steak came out overcooked--closer to well-done than the medium I ordered--and it was dry and lacked flavor. It definitely didn't have that "melt-in-your-mouth" quality you expect from a premium cut at that price. My son even said, "Dad, you cook steak better than this." My wife's fish was dry and overcooked as well, and my friend wasn't thrilled with his steak either. On the positive side, the mac and cheese was decent, though I felt it could've used a thicker, creamier cheese sauce. The asparagus, however, was the highlight--perfectly cooked with just the right crunch. Props to the chef on that; clearly, he knows how to make veggies shine. That said, I'm sure the chef might disagree with my take on the rest of the meal, and I hope he's open to feedback instead of just assuming I don't know what I'm talking about. My wife jokingly said before we went, "Let's just get tacos instead," and honestly, I wish we had--street tacos would've been more satisfying. Even though we were disappointed with the food, we still had a good time because of the occasion. I tipped our server 20% because he did an excellent job--none of this was on him. Both appetizers were very good but the star was the duck pot pie. The short rib was great, However the market fish entree was lacking in flavor and very over cooked, the accompaniment was disjointed. The marquise was great, as were the croissant crostini that came with it. The Japanese style dessert was appreciated for being so out of the box but didn't quit deliver. More crème anglais would have been nice and either the chestnut center or the sweet potato outside should have been a lighter fluffier consistency to balance each other out. My Daughter & I tried Dawson's during Dine Downtown last month, since its a good opportunity to try different resturaunts to go back to. This being said we understand that the resturaunts are busy during that time, but once seated with our reservation, we ordered the fixed pri menu with 1 mixed drink & 1 glass of wine along with an appetizer. The mixed drink came right away while the wine came after the appetizer, the prime rib was over cooked (no horseradish ). We took the dessert to go which they literally dumped one of them in the box & when they told us the server smiled & said it will still taste good! Overall the service was subpar & the food left something to be desired. While we were leaving The manager said thank you for coming in, our goal is to be the #1 premier steak house in Sacramento... Having stayed at the Regency so many times, I've never actually eaten here; until now! What a fantastic steak house. They cook their steaks to order and it was absolutely spot on medium rare. They have an extensive wine list with some very unique offerings. The service is excellent with the servers being extremely classy. We went for Dine Downtown on Saturday night and ordered the duck confit pot pie, split the short rib and market fish, and split the chestnut mont blanc and chocolate olive oil marquise. The duck confit was amazing, definitely try that while you can. I liked the market fish more than the short rib but both were good, but the market fish was savory and unique. Both desserts are definitely worth trying. Service is great here as always, I'll be back. read more

Checked-in during opening at 5 pm. on a Friday with reservations for Sacramento's Restaurant Week. I personally had qualms coming in with the food and service we were getting as our dinner would be of a promotional sort for Dine Downtown 2024. I was happily mistaken with that notion after our two hour dining experience at Dawson's. Located at the ground floor of Hyatt Regency, this steakhouse looks like a classy vintage restaurant with wooden wall paneling and Sacramento area paintings adorning the walls. We got seated in a booth, got our waters and our server, Juan, asked us for our drinks. My wife chose the $19 Bartender's Choice and I got the wine pairing for $25. After our inebriants arrived, we made it easy for him and ordered all 6 of the items featured in the 1st, 2nd & 3rd courses. Wine Pairing was a French Gamay and Italian Sangiovese. Passion Fruit Tequila Sour was my wife's Bartender's Choice. 1st Course: Cornflake Crusted Quail and Korean Tuna Tostada 2nd Course: Grilled Wagyu Bavette and Pan Seared Striped Bass 3rd Course: Warm Sticky Chocolate Date Cake and Postachio Cheesecake. Portions were surprisingly belly filling. Dishes were all flavourful. 11 4 2024 Our first Dine Downtown experience and I was blown away. Booked via the Opentable app about 2 weeks ago for the 5pm slot which is just at opening time for this steakhouse. We were seated a few minutes after 5pm as there was another party ahead of us. We were situated in a booth. Got our complimentary bread service and water. Started off with a hefty $19 cocktail - Bartenders choice for the night but I was happy with it while the hubby got his wine pairing for an additional $25. The nice thing with Dawson is that they have 2 sets of 3 course meal specific for the Dine Downtown event so we got to taste all that was in the menu. I was at first wary about the serving since it's a fix price it might be too small but was impressed as all servings were a lot and we went home stuffed. I chose the following: * Korean Tuna Tostada (gochujang mayo, pickled ginger, micro cilantro on a crispy corn tortilla) * Grilled Wagyu Bavette (red chermoula, parsnip puree fennel salad, pecorino cheese) the beef cooked medium and it was perfection * Pistachio Cheesecake (Amarena cherry compote, whipped creme fraiche) THE BEST, I'm drooling with the thought while writing this review Arnel chose the following:(he didn't really have a choice lol) * Cornflake Crusted Quail (mustard bacon vinaigrette, brusssel sprout slaw) * Pan Seared Striped Bass (purple sweet potato hash, leeks, spanish chorizo, parsley sauce) the fish was cooked perfectly - juicy and tender * Warm Sticky Chocolate Date Cake (miso butterscotch, bittersweet chocolate mousse) All of the food deserved a big applause, everything was cooked perfectly. For me the winner was the pistachio cheesecake - I'm a little bit biased as I love anything pistachio. But as I've said, everything exceeded my expectations. All in all, I was very impressed with the entire dining experience. I will also have to commend our server - Juan, he always checked on us without being overly hovering. Everything was exceptional; the ambience and the service were phenomenal. For appetizers, I enjoyed the scallops and crab cakes, which were both fantabulous in flavor and texture. For my main entrée, I had the rack of elk, which was off the chain. It was tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. We went there for dine downtown Sacramento. It's a set menu. My friends had the jewel of ribeye steak and I had the salmon. We also had the butternut squash soup and the kimchi rice not my favorite meal. The meat was not top-quality. The salmon was fatty, the sautéed radicchio was bitter and the risotto had no flavor.
