This place is really cute, and the pastries are gorgeous. However, the taste is disappointing. The kringle does not have enough filling. It basically tastes like a croissant with a very little bit of almond in it. We found the kringle at Larsen's much tastier. Label the items so people don't have to ask you a thousand times what things are. It will also eliminate some of the chaos in ordering. Otherwise, great new Bakeri just hope they improve a couple of flow items. Edit: Bakeri staff is showing effort to improve the customer experience and add some better communication item. Not gunna lie I went a little hog wild. The city I live in does not have a Scandinavian anything other than IKEA. As soon as I walked through the door it blew my Scandinavian socks off I am always on the look out for good quality Scandinavian foods of any kind and Byen Bakeri is legit! This place wins in looks alone. Bright Scandinavian decor and gorgeous pastries, cakes, and cookies. I wasn't hungry for cookies but I did buy a gift box to take home. It's nice that they have cute packaging that's suitable for gift giving as I find that's harder to find in the U.S. than other parts of the world. I was so excited to find a wonderful Scandinavian bakery. The beloved Scandinavian Bakery in Ballard closed a few years back. And sadly so much of Seattle's Scandinavian history is disappearing. Since moving back to the area I was on the hunt for a bakery that makes the Swedish cake - the Princess Cake. And I was also looking for the Swedish holiday treat - Saffron Buns. So I called ahead and ordered some Saffron Buns. They were beautiful - but unfortunately they did not have much taste. A Saffron Bun should have a lovely taste of saffron and be slightly sweet. These did not taste much of anything. We also tried a slice of Princess Cake. I think the cake may have been a few days old as it was dry. It was only so so. On the plus side - the other pastries we tried were utterly AMAZING. We had some there and took other home (they were even great the next day). We had a raspberry almond danish, a marionberry and cheese danish, a pecan roll and the hubby also had a cardamom pastry with custard that he loved. We got coffees while we were there and my cappuccino was delicious. It is a beautiful bakery and everyone was very nice. So I was sad that my two favorite Swedish items were not great. But the other pastries were so delicious that this will be one of our new favorite bakeries! read more

Not only is the food amazing, made from scratch, and reasonably priced, the staff are so nice! There are so many good options, you'll want to buy one of everything - but be warned, the pastries are HUGE - even my 14-year old "eats everything in site" son had to save half of his for later. read more

Byen Bakeri is a nice find between Queen Anne and Fremont. A little off the beaten path, it's worth a visit to pick up one of their many, many danishes. It's almost a bit overwhelming how many choices there are to pick from. The danishes are great but service hasn't been as friendly when I need help understanding the variety of options since there are so many. It'd be helpful if they would put up a sign or menu describing each of the different types of pastries. read more

This is the real deal. It's extremely difficult on my waistline to be so close to Byen, but it's easy on my tastebuds! Anything almond or marzipan here is a winner. The Princess Cake is unlike anything I've ever tasted before. I haven't tried the prepackaged bread because I'm always interested in the goodies behind the glass. If you want a lot of spice, a good savory choice would be the cheddar and jalapeño biscuits they keep in a basket on the counter. This place gets packed. The service can be very slow and it sometimes feels like the workers aren't very friendly or attentive. Another qualm I have is that the coffee sizes are off. Every time I've asked for a 12-ounce they have given me eight ounces of latte (if that) in a 12-ounce cup. However, if you can be patient about being served and brave the crowds, this is one of the best bakeries in the Greater Seattle area. read more

Great as always. 5/22/21 : I ordered a ham and cheese croissant, and employees I usually don't encounter were there. They just didn't heat it up or offer to as they seemed to be in a huge rush to get to the next customer. Not a huge deal, but I just don't want to eat a pastry with cold ham haha. read more

Great selection of baked goods -- from simple (but great) cookies, muffins, etc. to decadent cakes & sweets. Sandwiches are very simple yet some of the best I've had in a long time. Believe this is because they use high quality ingredients and make thoughtful tweaks to classic items (like lingonberry jam or cardamom aioli on a classic turkey sandwich). Until my last visit I would have rated Byen five stars and sung their praises, but my latest visit has tempered my opinion. Used to live in the neighborhood and one of the best perks was Byen. They had excellent breads, pastries and their Kringle was sublime. But my last experience there was markedly different. My wife's cream puff was filled with vanilla pudding, most of which ended up on her plate--she said it was pretty gross. My cinnamon bun was stale. And the Kringle--the Kringle!!!--was just ok. I really hope this was an aberration and that Byen is not cheapening themselves. Will update after next visit. read more

I really wanted to love this bakery. The service was very nice and it looks nice inside. I went there to buy a Yule Log in December before Christmas. But it was so expensive and the display cake was underwhelming I didn't get it. My issue is the quality of the baked items I purchased. The holiday stollen is the most disappointing stollen I have ever had. It was so dry and tasteless and at $15 was a complete waste of money. The cookies were very nice though. The dough wrapped sausage tasted very oily, big disappointment. The cafe drinks are very expensive. I tried a sweet cinnamon type of croissant and it was so dry and just made a mess of crumbs- it looked dry too so I should have known better. I think if you buy just the right items here you can have a very nice experience. I would come back here but be very careful what I choose next time. read more

I cannot speak highly enough about this perfect bakery. I am a regular customer as I live just down the block on the SPU campus. Not only does this establishment offer a lovely, natural-light-filled seating area, it also dishes out the most perfect pastries, loaves and savory treats EVER! I am a baker, and a huge baked-goods snob, so you can trust me when I say that this place is a gem. They offer a humungous selection of cookies, danishes, croissants, thumbprints, slices of cake, cupcakes, loaves of bread, rolls - and it's all so good! I'm the kind of person who if I try something delicious, I usually won't try anything new, I'll just order the same thing every time, but I couldn't resist here. Every item I've tried has been better than the last. PLUS $5 Fridays! As if their goods weren't reasonably-priced enough as is. I'm a college student and can't afford to splurge on too many things, but I have zero qualms about coming here and ordering a lip-smacking pastry to nibble on while working at my laptop, or enjoying coffee with a friend. Oh and they also have incredible boxed lunches. I love ordering the Caprese sandwich which comes on a baguette (perfect blend of crusty and chewy) with mozzarella cheese, basil (I believe - it's some herby leafy deliciousness), tomatoes, and light mayo. It's definitely rivals Paseo's for one of the best sandwiches I've had here in Seattle. The staff is very friendly and provide service with a smile. We have been here a number of times but severely disappointed on Saturday. The Quiche (we tried two types) was truly awful- greasy and pretty tasteless. The mushrooms tasted dry. I have been trying to get to Byen Bakery for a long time. I finally made it this morning and it is amazing. I went in to by rolls and ended up with rolls, sourdough bread and a variety of the most amazing pastries I have ever had. The chocolate almond croissants are perfect. We tried the cinnamon rolls, blueberry cream cheese pastries and a couple other rolls - all delicious. To top it off, the customer service was outstanding. I think I asked about everything in the case and the explanation of each Item was great. We will be back! read more

I walked into this gem on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. Immediately I was surrounded by a large variety of baked goods, most of which were unknown to me. I have to admit, I came here because I heard they always have a delicious supply of Princess cake (which I was originally fascinated by during a Great British Baking Show marathon).. but of course I did not leave with just that. This little cafe's cozy atmosphere was underscored by a distinct international feel although I have never personally been to any of the Scandinavian countries. The place is very clean and people super helpful (as in they will very nicely take the time to explain what each mystery pastry is). I ended up trying the princess cake as well as their royal croissant.. both excellent choices if you can't just get one of everything. The princess cake was divine! A delicate and not too sweet creation with its careful layers, delicious sponge, cream and raspberry jam all covered with the characteristic green marzipan. The Royal croissant was pretty much the most extravagant almond croissant I have ever had.. a flaky twice baked almond croissant filled with a rich almond paste and maybe soaked in some sort of berry syrup? Absolutely delicious but maybe a tad too rich to eat in one sitting. I am sure glad I don't live close to this bakery but definitely plan on stopping by when I feel like a treat :) read more

Best bakery in Seattle. The pastries and cakes are Unbelievable. Like the best homemade pastries you have ever had. Buttery and European tasting and just delicious. The workers are not particularly wonderful or friendly, but they are not bad at all and I don't really care about that - I care about taste and texture and fresh, and it's really a dream bakery. I went to a wedding and they got their cake from here. Hands down it was the best cake I've ever had! It was a cherry cake with cherry flavored fondant layered on top. I really liked how the fondant was flavored because it paired the cake flavor well, and with other places it isn't as good because the fondant taste bad. I'm almost afraid to give away this hidden gem. This is the best bakery outside of Paris that I have EVER been to. Try the Pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant), the cakes are rich and delicious, the cinnamon bun is super yummy, too. Everything I have tried has been amazing. I think this place is pretty good, but not super outstanding. I'd rate this a high three. The pastries are very sweet and buttery... Like their croissant is a butter sponge. But they're also very flakey which I like. The pastries with fruits are generally really good (mm Apple Danish) but I find the sweetness overbearing as I pass the halfway point. The coffee is pretty good. Not the best but not bad at all. The service has gotten better over time! Very impressed with that. And it's cute and clean inside, a great place to do homework. Last year I had a turkey croissant sandwich and it was soooooooooo good but I can't seem to find their soup +sammy lunch deal! I haven't asked, but you should! I don't mind coming here. It's close and convenient to my school, and the location is peaceful. There's no parking lot so good luck (unless you choose to park at the 7/11 next door) with street parking! read more
