So glad I went with C-Ray. So many choices and I landed a great one !! Walked into this" fish shack " with wRm smiles ! Very friendly woman behind the counter. We asked a few questions and decided to try her clam chowder. It was so thick that my spoon stood up straight . So enjoyable thick but no taste of flour! Had fresh corn, along with small chunks of potatoes and clams. Excellent !!! Loved that touch! Ordered the lobster roll and the naked roll. One with mayo the other drawn butter on top! Stopped for a quick bite on our way back home from Bar Harbor. The blueberry pie was amazing! Friendly service and the clams were great.

We were in Bar Harbor checking out the area. Not wanting to eat somewhere in town, I found C-ray up the road about 10 minutes. I'm so happy I did. This place IS AMAZING. The woman who took our orders was friendly, but a bit deaf (maybe its just hard with everyone wearing masks). The naked lobster roll (no sauce- butter on the side), was fantastic and had a good portion of lobster inside. The chowder was phenomenal. We opted to try the blueberry soda, which despite being hesitant about, WAS ALSO AMAZING. Saving the best for last- DEFINITELY get the whoopee pie. I never knew they were old outside of Hostess snacks, but the whoopee pie at C-RAY is so delicious. Its served chilled and its a massive cookie and creme sandwich. I just got back from spending a week in Maine and C-Ray was definitely my favorite restaurant. P.S. They have plenty of *extremely* well spaced out outdoor seating. I do not understand why people like this place. I paid $23 for about 1 1/4 pounds of whole lobster. That means I got a few ounces of lobster meat to eat. It was plain boiled lobster. It tasted OK and I'm sure it was quite fresh. It was however a rip off. I would have to get four of them to have a meal. Also they wanted four or five dollars for a single slice of blueberry pie. We asked our hotel clerk at Bar Harbor Major for a recommendation for lobster which was not a tourist trap. He recommended C-Ray's. C-Ray's is not located in Bar Harbor town proper, and it's located about 12 minutes up W 3. It is located just off the highway, with good signage out front. We ordered the two-person lobster dinner meal. The meal consists of mussels, corn on the cob, and a choice of weight of lobster. Neither of us like mussels, so we asked for a substitution of clams. While we were standing at the counter to pay, the cashier selected our live lobster, which had been caught the same day. C-RAY'S has picnic tables outdoors for seating. We only sat for about 15 minutes until our freshly cooked meal arrived hot and ready at our table. Now the remainder of the review will show our land lubber Midwestern doors... Neither had ever been served boiled clams on the shell nor a full boiled lobster. The lobster, dipped in drawn butter, was delicious, lacking the odor and heavy flavor of store bought lobster tail. The corn on the cob was good, and I'm very picky about my corn. We also added a piece of blueberry pie. I had never had a blueberry pie, so wasn't sure what to expect. The pie was an excellent balance between the flavor of the blueberries and just the right amount of sugar to to overcome to balance any tartness. It was a good piece of pie. The down side wasn't any fault of C-Ray's, but instead the element of newness for Midwesterners. Having only ever had breaded clams, we found the taste of boiled clams to be distasteful. That's on us, not the restaurant, of course. We had also never seen the inside of a lobster above the tail, and at first it was rather off-putting. If you have never seen this before either, be prepared for a somewhat disgusting visual display. However, it did not affect the taste of the lobster, just left an image I wish I hadn't seen. (Apparently this mess is a delicacy for the innured.) All in all, C-Ray's was a good quality authentic lobster meal in the open air. I had the twin lobster special with 2lbs of mussels and two ears of corn ($32 or $39 depending on size) as well as a bowl of chowder, and 2lbs of Steamed clams. ALL SPECTACULAR! I do however recommend that you use the restroom somewhere else first. There is a portable potty and you can wash your hands inside after. That's the only real blemish against this place, but since the food deserved 6-stars, I didn't think it fair to ding them. Go big or go home. We called in a take out order on Columbus Day weekend when Acadia National Park was still abuzz with tourists. We were 10 minutes away and craving a lobster roll. There was no line when we arrived and our rolls were ready and waiting. The store front is small and only a handful of people could stand inside, but they have several glass cases offering anything from mussels to pies. Everything (especially the blueberry pie and I seriously regret not buying a piece) looked amazing. The lobster roll is easily the best lobster roll I've ever had. My boyfriend and I were looking for a cheap place to buy two lobsters to cook at home. On the way back from the park, we passed by C-Ray and quickly pulled over. It's not much of a sit-down restaurant, more like a little store with some picnic tables in the back. We bought two hard-shell 1.5 lb lobsters for $7.99/lb, which is apparently not a bad price given the high price of lobster this season. We took them home in our cooler and they were delicious. Large, meaty, and sweet. Almost all the people there seemed to be there to dine in. I took a quick look at the prices and was super impressed by how affordable everything was. It's much cheaper than the lobster pounds on the same street, and it's not like the larger lobster pounds offer much more in the way of atmosphere. If we weren't cooking our lobsters at home, we would've ordered a lobster dinner for two here. Even the pies ($20 for what appeared to be a homemade blueberry pie) looked like a good deal. The inside of the store was clean, and the guy who sold us our lobster was friendly. There was a group of tourists ahead of us in line who admitted they never had lobster before and had no idea how to order, and he was very patient and took his time to guide them through the process. We actually got there before they opened at 11:00 and loitered in their parking lot for a bit. After reading rave reviews, we decided to give this place a try. The lobster dinner is a pretty good deal, and both of our lobsters were decently sized but undercooked. My husband really enjoyed the corn, although neither of us were particularly impressed by the blueberry pie. Would have been better served warm. It started getting crowded around dinnertime and because of limited seating, we ended up sharing a table with another party. The way this place works is you put your order in at the counter of the little shack and they bring the food out to you. What I didn't like was that I felt pressured to tip at least 15%, even though this isn't a full service place. Their computer system prompts you to pick 15, 18, or 20% and you wonder whether you'll get a smaller lobster if you choose not to tip. I picked 15 to be safe. On our vacay last week, we went to c-rays 3 times and "the travelin lobster" (which has 5 stars on yelp) once. Those numbers are reflective of how much c-ray's blew the competition out of the water on all fronts. Because we had both experiences so close together, this will be a review of comparisons. We primarily focused on eating lobster rolls (vs getting whole lobsters) as we didn't want to do actual work on our vacation. The "lazy man's lobster" (aka lobster roll) worked well for our purposes. C-rays naked lobster roll was awesome. The texture and flavor of the lobster were spot on. There was a huge side of butter, so you could add it to your own taste/preference. The bun was amazing- chewy with crispy bits, an awesome texture. Only downside was the lobster itself was chilled, as this is how they prevented it from being over-cooked. In contrast, the comparable lobster roll at the travelin lobster had a little less lobster, butter was already mixed in for you (none on side), and lobster was over-cooked. The only advantage to travelin's lobster roll was that it was warm/hot (which is probably why the lobster gets overcooked, I'm guessing it is cooked once to get the meat out, then reheated and sautéed with butter b4 being put in roll). 2) At c-rays we ordered a lobster stew (well seasoned and big chunks of lobster) and at travelin lobster we tried lobster bisque (no big chunks and literally tastes like cream and lobster with no seasoning). 3) Blueberry Pie--c-rays blueberry pie is seriously the best pie I've had in a long time. On my first visit I bought just one slice and on my second visit I just gave in and bought a whole pie. So. Many. Blueberries. Just tastes like a little sugar and cinnamon were added. The crust wasn't my favorite, but I'm admittedly more of a pie filling gal and the filling to crust ratio was perfect . So now let's discuss traveling lobster's blueberry pie. The filling had that "pie filling" taste and consistency if you know what I mean (like, corn-starchy from-the-can?). Far fewer blueberries than c-rays. No cinnamon flavor detected. The crust was better - it was more buttery and flakey (so if you are a crust over filling person you might be all about this pie). 4) dranks-ok, so yes, at c-rays, they might ask you to get your own drinks out of a cooler/fridge. Which will be directly behind you as you stand to order. (Someone else complained about this, which is why I mention it.) But you really just have to turn around and it will be right there. And they have fun drinks in glass bottles, like Maine blueberry soda and Mexican Coke. They were big on having soda with real sugar. If you go down to travelin lobster, you can buy your drinks out of a vending machine. They'll be in a can. read more

Overall: Had friends visiting for the weekend and we were looking for an alternative to the generic tourist traps in central Bar Harbor and we won big in finding C-Rays. Location: Lobster shack that's easy to find. Yelp address must have been updated because gps took us straight to the entrance of the drive way which was well marked by big blue sign. Staff: Can't say enough about how friendly the staff was about answering all our questions and making suggestions. They even let my friend take a picture with the steamer and warmed up a few of our pie slices in the oven for us! The food: Great and lived up to my foodie visitors high Maine lobster dinner experience (Phew!) Lobster rolls were FRESH, FULL, and FABULOUS. The amount of filling in these rolls are leaps and bounds above what you get in the main Bar Harbor area -- aka it's worth taking a trip here. When my family and I came down for a stay at Bar Harbor, C-Ray was the first restaurant we ate it -- and the one that we compared to all our other stops! Overall, I LOVED C-Ray, although my family had some mixed feelings about it. For 5 people (including grandma, who eats relatively little), we ordered 2 of the 2-person dinner specials (2 whole boiled lobsters + 1 ear of corn + 1 pound of mussels), 2 large clam chowders, AND 1 lobster roll to share. I personally loved the boiled lobsters, which were incredibly fresh (hell, we even got to pick them out and see them alive before eating them!) and delicious. They went incredibly well with the sweet ears of corn and the fresh mussels, as well as the amazing clam chowder. I was truly thrilled with our meal... although my family did complain that they thought the lobster was very salty. (Perhaps because it was so fresh?) The bigger problem was that even after buying so much food (our bill totaled to $100 + change, including tip), we still felt rather hungry! Granted, we were starving after a long road-trip but you really don't want to feel hungry after spending a cool $100+ on food either. I would definitely come back to C-Ray in the future but I would caution new visitors to get more food than they might in other restaurants if hungry. Also, be aware that all seating at C-Ray is outdoors and bring your sunscreen! Service was fast and friendly and I love how sustainable they were in encouraging visitors to add empty scraps of food to the composting pile. read more

Out of a 3 night stay in Bar Harbor we ate there twice because it was so good. Obviously family owned, everything on the menu was home made, served with care and was delicious. We had steamers and whole lobsters which were incredibly fresh and well prepared. We've been coming to Maine every summer for 20 years and can honestly say this is one of the best roadside stands we've been to. As a bonus they have a nice protected area for inclement weather. Fantastic Lobster Rolls!! Stopped by after a busy day at Acadia. I had a regular roll plus a cup of the clam chowder. My wife enjoyed a naked roll(no sauce). While there are many places in the area that offer these items, the difference is in how they're prepared. C-Ray definitely does a job well done, especially with their house sauce.
