    Oyster mushroom omelette and toast
    Sandip S.

I was staying at a neighboring hotel and decided to go to Cabrillo for breakfast after seeing the reviews. And I was not disappointed. I got a seat immediately after I arrived. The service was pretty good. I ordered oyster mushroom omellette, which is rarely found anywhere else, and toast. The food came pretty quickly and was awesome. The omelette had just the right amount of oyster mushroom. The toast, somehow, was extremely tasty. The food was plentiful as well. I took some of the toast with me and ate later in the day. The total bill was somewhat on the high side (at about $40), but I thought that the food was worth it. I would gladly go back there again.

Excellent little restaurant located within The Proper. This place has a great menu for breakfast and lunch and also has an excellent cocktail bar during the evening hours. Service is prompt and the food is delish!

Cabrillo at the LA Proper Hotel makes a strong first impression with its inviting breakfast ambiance and upbeat café music. During my visit, I tried the PROPER BREAKFAST from their menu, which offered a satisfying start to the day. The spot also has a tasty selection of pastries, fresh smoothies, and coffee beverages--all ideal for a leisurely morning meal. However, the service was a disappointment. Despite only a handful of guests at that early hour, the server was inattentive and didn't once check on my table or offer to refill coffee or water, which took away from the overall experience. If great service is a priority, you may be let down here, but if you value good breakfast in a stylish setting and have time and budget to spare, Cabrillo can still be worth a try for the food and vibe alone..

Tried Cabrillo for the first time today. Every time I went to Cara Cara on the Rooftop of the Proper Hotel, I would peer into Cabrillo and I thought it looked so pretty so when we were trying to find a place to celebrate my sister's birthday, I suggested it. There were 8 of us and everyone enjoyed their dishes. The service was great and most of all, I loved the ambience. It is such a beautifully designed restaurant. We will definitely be back.

What a cute cafe! I loved their take on avocado toast! It was so fresh with all the fixings, I added smoked salmon for protein, the lattes are legit. Their hospitality is superb, our server was on top of everything, thank you!

Came here for brunch with friends on a very hot summer day and their AC saved the day (no issues with cooling the dining area at all). We made a reservation ahead of time but our table wasn't quite set up by the time we arrived. Though we were thankful for the waiting area. Service was pretty good. Our main server was attentive and would bring water for refills pretty frequently and was very friendly. Food: ***** loved the CARNITAS + SWEET POTATO -- delicious flavors of the super soft carnitas. Definitely wished it was a larger portion for $25. *** Bacon side - very salty but crunchy ***** Potatoes - very delicious, a nice balance of flavor but not too salty Restrooms: They're on the second floor - but you can definitely miss it as you exit the elevators bc it's SO dark in that hallway and the signs aren't marked brightly. Parking: They have valet, or you can find metered parking on Main Street which is just a block away (if you don't mind parking next to the tents/encampments)

Very nice place. Service was good. Mezze was an appetizer choice that was a big serving. Someone else in the group ordered the three meat appetizer and it was a great presentation. Caesarea pasta (creamy sauce - with mushrooms, beans, and kale) is a vegetarian dish that has so much flavor. I would order again. Food came out in segments, for our party of six.

Wow wow wow! This place is so beautiful! Def now one of my fav places to come to! And omggg some of the best foods i have tried. Their prawns are so delicious and a must try/get. Do yourself a favor and order a plate for yourself. You will not want to share! lol The flavors are insane & That sauce is ridiculous. I can't wait to go back! Salad was refreshing. Drinks were tasty. Parking: street metered parking/ parking structure next door/ valet ($). Reservations are recommended. They do have a speak easy and a rooftop that you must check out as well.

Great place to get some breakfast if you're staying at the Proper and have time to spare. I tired several things in the menu. Nothing disappointed. That being said, the dishes are not your typical breakfast dishes. So check out the menu before you go to make sure they have something you like. Also, don't go if you're in a rush. Every time I went it seemed to be very slow paced as far as seating and serving, even though there weren't many people there. The servers don't seem to be very attentive and were conversing with each other quite a bit (maybe training), but it's fine because it's all made up with the good food quality. The Egg Frittata was very tasty and cooked perfectly. I would probably prefer some kind of meat in it and would ask for the addition next time. The squash was very flavorful though. It's served in a cast iron skillet. To get some extra protein, I ordered a side of Greek yogurt (which is plain) and a side of fruit to add some depth to the flavor. It was a good choice because the plain yogurt was very bland (as expected). It took a while for them to make the dish (probably around 15 min), which I thought was a little odd. I also tried the Scottish Oatmeal with berries and it was good. A stark contrast to the frittata, the oatmeal came out in just a minute or two! The honey butter was a nice addition and they serve it with milk on the side if you prefer your oatmeal with it. The fruit here was very fresh, but not the ripest at times. There were a few sour pieces that I got both days I had it, but that's kinda how fruit goes. The Fireball Shot has some kick to it! Very spicy, so watch out if you're not used to ginger/turmeric/cayenne/pepper shots. I ordered this each time I went because I enjoyed the burn. Overall, great dishes (while not typical American breakfast fare) and I'm sure I would enjoy every item on the menu.

Caldo Verde is the Downtown LA Proper Hotel's flagship ground floor restaurant helmed by famed chef Suzanne Goin and her restaurateur business partner Caroline Styne. They also oversee the hotel's rooftop outdoor restaurant/bar Cara Cara and the intimate cocktail and afternoon tea lounge Dahlia. This DTLA hotel-restaurant relationship appears to be going swimmingly, much better than that at the Santa Monica Proper (regarding Jessica Koslow). Caldo offers a Portuguese/Mediterranean/California fusion menu in a beautiful and airy space. The restaurant also hosts a Guest Chef/Cookbook Dinner event every month or so, where a guest chef, usually in conjunction with their new or existing cookbook, offers a unique one-night-only multi-course prix-fixe menu. Signed cookbooks are available during these dinners courtesy of Now Serving, a bookstore in Chinatown specializing in cookbooks. Having stayed at The Proper a number of times, usually in conjunction with a Cookbook Dinner (the hotel offers a discounted rate for diners who elect to stay overnight), I have also eaten at Caldo numerous times, not just for the special dinners but off their regular dinner menu as well as for breakfast and Proper Hour (Happy Hour). Fairly recently, the Destination Amenity fee charged to hotel guests translates into a $50 food and beverage credit at Caldo or in-room-dining. Caldo's breakfast menu is not inexpensive, but fresh and diverse. The omelet option has changed ingredients over time but is always a good choice. For Proper Hour, I recommend the mango paloma and crab tostadas. And for dinner, you can't go wrong with their signature Caldo Verde, a Portuguese seafood stew with linguica sausage and potatoes. The cookbook dinners I've experienced have run the gamut from Southern (Carla Hall) to elevated sandwiches (Mason Hereford) to a Zuni Cafe tribute (OG Alice Waters was present!) to the cookie that changed (another OG) Nancy Silverton's life. The most recent dinner was not chef-driven, but was a showcase of Westholme Wagyu beef from Australia. I've caught glimpses of chef Suzanne, but she is not one to schmooze with guests. Ms. Styne, however affably makes her way around the front of the house. The table next to me took a photo with her, thinking she was Suzanne, but I did not correct them. Shout outs also to my regular waiter Steven and hostess Oksana. And kudos to the pastry chef Irene. I'll be missing the next dinner (Le Sud, recipes from southern France) because I'll be in New York trying to achieve the impossible dream of securing a table at Tatiana by Kwame Onwuachi.

    Matcha chia seed pudding

Super cute place for breakfast and brunch. If you have time to spare, come here and enjoy the decor. I've had a handful of things from their menu, and the repeats for me are the matcha chia pudding and diosa verde smoothie. Here are my thoughts on the dishes I tried: 1) Smoked Salmon - Beautiful and tasty. I liked the base of johnny cake, because it gave the dish a bit of a sweet flavor. It was a good blend of sweet and salty. I prefer this construction to Republique's smoke salmon over a potato pancake. Potato + salmon = too salty for me. 2) Carnitas and sweet potato hash - I enjoyed the flavoring of this dish as well. The poached egg and avocado can be a tad rich, but I liked the spices on the hash. 3) Matcha chia pudding - I loved the layers and the coconuty flavor of this pudding. It's a good blend of sweet, but you can still really taste the matcha. 4) Diosa Verde smoothie - Almond butter and chia seeds make this smoothie so filling! I like the mild banana flavor.

The ambiance is amazing the moment you walk through the door. Moody lighting and overall great interior vibes. Wine selection and other beverages are great. The server was great and recommended a better wine than the one I selected (he knew I wanted more of a full body red). We ordered the fruit and cheese plate to start, the cheeses were exquisite, as were the cherry preserves. There were intentions to order more than one entree off of the menu, BUT, we had to order the Caldo Verde (duh). It was beautiful, full of comfort and nostalgia. It brought me back to being a child on a cold winter night, enjoying a bowl of stew. The richness and depth of the broth with the potatoes was delightful. Let's not forget that this also has. A fine selection of seafood, which was very fresh and amazing as well! Bottom line... Plan your next trip to LA or your next date night downtown if you're local, and make a stop at Caldo Verde!

I finally was able to check it off, thanks to a hotel offer with a dining credit. Dahlia is the gorgeous petite space behind the larger ground floor restaurant space now called Cabrillo (formerly Caldo Verde). Dahlia opened as a bespoke cocktail lounge, then began to offer tea. Now it's just tea. There are five 2-tops and two 4-top tables. All food and beverage venues at the Proper used to be under the auspices of famed chef Suzanne Goin and her business partner/sommelier Caroline Styne. They are no longer affiliated with the Proper, but many of their dishes/contributions remain. The last named vestige of them is on the tea menu, "Suzanne's Deviled-Egg Sandwich". The tea menu has several options: Classic, with a seasonal mocktail, or with different champagnes. I opted for the Classic experience, because the mocktail had mocha, not my fave. Server Lluvia was clearly a Dahlia veteran; she offered a tea-smelling of all the teas that interested me as well as crowd favourites. I ultimately chose one of these faves, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which had passionfruit and vanilla. I declined milk/cream, but did get lemon. There were rock sugar sticks on the table. It seems the selection of tea sandwiches and sweet treats changes every so often, although the vanilla bean scone, dried currant scone, Devonshire cream and apricot orange jam seem like constants. The sandwich selection at my visit were: cucumber, crab/creme fraiche, beet hummus on pita, smoked salmon and Suzanne's deviled egg. All were delish, the beet, crab and deviled egg especially. The sweet treats were: orange fig butter cookie, spiced apple brown butter crumble, cranberry frangipane hand pie, chocolate mocha macaron, pumpkin madeleine, plus the 2 scones. All were excellent. There were no leftovers. A bit pricey, but a relaxing and lovely experience. The room was not crowded when I visited, adding to the calmness of my visit.

Food: I ordered the ham n cheese sandwich which I thought I'd get fast bcz its easy to make, given how slow they were, but I asked for chicken instead of ham since I don't eat pork.. mind you, they have a chicken club sandwich on the menu so it shd be easy, but NO!!! The waitress said "we'll charge extra for chicken". GET OUTTA HERE!!! Ure telling me chicken is more expensive than ham?? My partner got fries bcz he was afraid the wait for anything else would be long! We saw a bunch of people enter, sit around & leave, bcz they're being ignored. We almost did too, but I just paid $28 for parking in a lot (it's $35 at the hotel) so we waited, ate, paid & ended up going elsewhere for a proper dinner after this ridiculous debacle!

The ambience depends on the time, it can be a chill bar before 10pm, and post 10 on the weekends it's more of a club atmosphere with a dj.

The entire bar is dark, mysterious with twinkle lights overhead. Like Las Vegas, once inside, it's hard to know if it's day or night outside. Only exception is in their outdoor patio mirrored on the sides like the hall at Versailles and sunlight coming in from above where smoking is allowed. We came early before 8pm during Happy Hour when non-members can enter with a person with a membership which allows 3 additional guests, and all guests are free to enter without a membership until 8pm. [$30 initial membership fee for a year and $20 annual renewal.] Caña (kahn yah) means cane in Spanish referring to sugar cane from which rum is made. Our bartender was helpful and personable welcoming us and taking our orders. Under advice from Caña member Elite Yelper, Isobel L., who graciously took us under her wing, we ordered a shot of Nicaraguan Flor de Caña Rum aged 12 years that came with a cigarillo. We adjourned from the bar to the patio to smoke our mini-stogies and sipped our rum. We came early when there were very few members so it was the perfect place to talk and mellow out. Those who want a more animated crowd probably should come much later when lively dance music begins, and booties start to swing. Caña Rum Bar: 4 stars
