I have been going to Cactus Taverna for years. Not sure just how to describe it, as it is very unique. Maybe a gourmet Mexican Restaurant? The alligator is a must have for every visit! Every meal has had it's own unique flavor. They have always been excellent! But the best thing is the atmosphere and the fact that the owner comes out and talks with everyone. The owner is a marketing genius. Knowing that Greek restaurants (his obvious passion) struggle to attract a crowd, he sucks us in with a Mexican tease and then slams our taste buds with some of the best fish specials we've ever had - blending a perfectly prepared Hawaiin blackened sunfish with a mango salsa and couscous - and it works! The fish specials were around $17 but well worth the price. The margaritas ain't bad either. read more

Don't be fooled by the strip mall exterior. We loved eating here. They serve quality, delicious food that is actually worth the higher price (about $14 - 28 / plate), and I'm usually a cheapskate about food. In fact, I'm the type that complains about the price of McDonald's (What the heck happened to McDonald's?!). The decorating and music is very unique. The whole atmosphere makes it feel like you're in a Mediterranean area at night even when it's light outside. All in all it's a very cool place to eat. We came in around 9pm although we weren't that hungry. We shared some appetizers and a chimichanga entree. Food was good. Mostly Mexican but they are also trying to be Mediterranean. Interesting mix. Quaintly decorated although the lighting is turned down so low that it's almost hard to read the menu. The food is pretty standard Tex Mex with some impressive specials and a comprehensive wine list. The wait staff are extremely attentive and well versed on the menu. There was live entertainment on a particular Friday that we dined there and for lack of a better word, it sucked. If you do not drink alcohol be aware that at the end of your meal you will be offered a mouthful of port wine as a night cap. You might also notice another strange custom while dining here - a server bringing around a soft canteen full of white sangria that, if you want some, will squirt the drink into your mouth from a good two or three feet away. I saw this happening during our second visit and inquired with our server. She says that it's a custom of the South American country that the owners hail from. read more

I absolutely adore this restaurant! I wouldn't call it tex mex, it seems more Mediterranean to me. The atmosphere, food, drinks (try the sangria), and staff are so welcoming. My second time at Cactus Taverna and it was as exceptional as the first. The owner manager mingled with the customers and the wait staff were spot on. My waitress flowed through the specials of the day and I opted for the filet with crab imperial. I was not disappointed. It was cooked to perfection at medium rare and the crab imperial added the extra touch that put it over the top!!! Served with veggies, black beans, and rice it was spot on!!! This place was recommended by a colleague so I gave it a try. The service was good and the Chicken Florentine was excellent. The owner made the rounds during the meal which was a very nice touch. It was a week night so the place was rather quiet so this made for a decent atmosphere for conversation. The name says Mexican but it certainly offered more and I would describe as mixed ethnic dining which only enhanced what was offered on the menu. I definitely will return. read more

I think the Jordanian owner doesn't know which way to go. Got some Greek dishes. Spanish dishes. Mexican dishes. Local cuisines... Like fried soft shell crab. What is the theme?!? My husband and I ate here on a whim (and after seeing the yelp reviews) and we were very pleasantly surprised! The food is a fusion of many flavors, and if done incorrectly it could've gone very, very wrong. However, they do it VERY well! The seafood was fresh, the flavors were spot on and I am very happy we decided to eat here. To top it off, our server (I believe his name was Mike) was very kind and knowledgeable, and was patient in describing each dish and the history of the restaurant. The service was great most of the time. Endless chips and salsa, but the salsa was too watery for me. The fajitas were great though 3 small shells was nowhere near enough for the huge amount of food on the plate. The menu is one of the oddest juxtapositions I've ever seen. They have a few things like specials that included sirloin and lamb for tex-mex, but shellfish is probably in 2/3 of the dishes. There are tapas, but many revolve around adding shellfish to them. I expected a little more traditional Mexican food options (allergic to shellfish) so the menu was pretty limited for myself. It's definitely more Mediterranean than tex-mex, so if you go in thinking that you won't be disappointed by the menu. One of the more unique menus I've seen, especially for Salisbury. read more

Excellent, very friendly service. Provided us with great suggestions for what we were looking for, and with an eclectic menu like theirs, this was necessary. Thoroughly impressed by their skill in melding the Mexican and Mediterranean influences. Where the heavy aspect of Mexican food provides a strong base, the lighter, more appetizer-friendly side of Italian and Greek cuisine lightened up the meal. I had the Pita special with goat cheese (why have I not seen this combination before) and Veggie enchiladas, and my friend had the smoked salmon.
