Had my first taste of Loco Moco here about 18+ years ago - we've tried to make it a regular stop every time. Back then they gave out the Cafe 100 bumper stickers for free - my guitar cases are covered with them. Love the gravy, rice, 'egg your way' (fried for me), Spam, Portuguese sausage, Kimchi. A little shoyu on the rice, BAM. Dont tell your doctor. Value is awesome, portions per dollar are huge. Why 3 stars. Its the environment. For dine in or out, your meal is ensconced in never-decays-in thousands-of-years styrofoam or clear plastic. No reason for a little more they cant go enviro-friendly. It's a decent place to get local favorites like Loco Moco but thats about it. It's pretty big with many patio tables to seat down and eat. There's usually more than one register open to accomodate long lines during dinner time, especially on the weekends. I think my boyfriend and I got Super Loco Moco or something like that and it was just OK. Nothing special. Their portion was huge though. They are VERY generous. We shared and it was still more than enough for both of us. There was no way for us to finish. Parking lot is pretty big and many people come to take out so circulation isnt too bad. The super loco comes with hamburger patty drizzled in gravy, with two eggs, AND spam AND Portuguese sausage. And of course rice and mac salad. The super loco was not bad. The hamburger patty was just okay. But the whole package was pretty tasty. I liked the mac salad. The spam is salty (cuz it's spam), so you'll definitely need something to drink to go with it. If I lived/worked in Hawaii, this is the diner that I would go to on a weekly basis. I cannot vouch (because I didn't try) their Loco Moco, but I can say that their salmon, braised beef, and katsu chicken were all cooked perfectly. I actually think that their crispy katsu chicken is the best that I've had in Hawaii. Their macaroni salad tasted a little stale, but the steamed rice had a good stickiness to it. I stopped by here last week for lunch with my wife and her parents. We had been on the Big Island for a couple of days and were hankering to try some Hawaiian food and this place fit the bill. Then I stood around for a couple of minutes until my order was called and took the tray to our table. Both of the loco mocos were actually pretty good although I wish I would have gotten some more lil smokies in mine. However I can't really complain for the $5 cost. The fries here ended up being quite good as well as they were piping hot and crispy. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Wow! So bummed we didn't find this place until our last day on the Big Island. It is kind of tucked away and doesn't look like much. Great parking in front! It is a place where you order at the counter and they call you when your food is ready. I don't know if I've had a Loco Moco where the patty is nice and juicy, but that would be the main improvement point to this item. The gravy has the right consistency, not too thick and not too thin, and enrobes the rice and meats with ease. Break those yolks and the richness of the egg adds another layer of flavor too. Rating: 5/5 Turnover ($2.75) are something that my mom has a craving for every time she comes back home. I had not tried them before, but I have to say, I now know why she loves them so much.
