I have been wanting to try Cafe Baklava for a long time, as I am always in the mood for kabobs and rice. So we finally made it to this place for lunch. The service was great, both the waiter and the busboy were attentive and friendly. The wheat pita bread was fresh and warm and served with an interesting oil dip which had bits of soft red pepper in it (I think?). We ordered the chicken kabob with rice and veggies and the steak kabob with rice and veggies. The chicken kabob was really good, the steak was flavored nice but really chewy and not very tender which made it hard to eat. The rice was ok, the veggies meh. Overall I thought the meal was just so-so, nothing I would want to order again. Price of $16-$17/plate was somewhat high for the food received. read more

This is hubby's go to lunch spot where he always enjoyed the food. So we came here for our valentine dinner. I love the cozy, relaxing and warm ambiance, wait staff was cheerful and friendly. We were seated in the narrow part of the restaurant, window on one side where we saw passerby's admiring our food and kitchen on the other side that the chef frequently asking us how's the food. We came hungry but exercised good control on the warm pita bread; started with 2 glasses of merlot (generous pour from one of the many open bottles) and the lamb flat bread. This dish took 15-20 minutes, a very tasty boat shape pie filled with cheese, marinated lamb and grilled vegetables. The fresh arugula salad was very refreshing which helped cut the richness of the toppings. The edges were very crispy but the bottom did get a little soggy. Our entrees lamb chops and grilled sea bass were excellent. I'd probably rate the sea bass a 4.5 and the lamb chops a 3.5. Sea bass was a good size whole branzino perfectly grilled served with red cabbage salad. This had to be one of the best I've tasted even compared to Evvia or the restaurant in Rome. It was fresh, moist and well seasoned. I gave the chef a thumbs up, ate the whole thing including the crispy skin. The lamb chop was 4 thin slices of chops (half of a rack), nicely grilled with good seasoning but just a little too thin to be totally satisfying. Our bill before tips was around $90 which I consider quite reasonable, too full for dessert. They packed our leftover very nicely, including some extra spicy oil for the pita, the red rose was nice touch. Will be back. read more

Ambiance: Great vibes here, dim/romantic -like lighting and has enough space for a large party. I went here with about 10 co workers on a Friday evening around 5:30 and there was no issue with seating. The staff was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed Food: The food was very delicious , got the mezze for the table and it was delicious and fun to try different things all in one dish. Sceduled an impromptu biz meeting here, as I was in Silicon Valley for business. WOW!! What a find!! Having suffered a LOOOONG Mediterranean/Middle Eastern cuisine 'drought' since moving the San Luis Obispo area, the Cafe Baklava was truly an 'oasis in the desert'! I knew immediately upon the arrival of the house-made pita that I may have stumbled on yet another hidden treasure. Coupled with an olive oil/sun-dried tomato tapanade, I could have eaten the bread alone, but the real treasures were yet to come. One of the specials was what they called a Lamb Shank Stew, but it was basically one of the BIGGEST braised lamb shanks I have ever eaten, reclined in a large bowl of stewed beans in an incredible gravy. On the side, rice and roasted peppers and zucchinis....and the bread...more bread! My dining associate was eating light and just had the Cheese Boureg...basically 2 gigantic baked cheese turnovers with another fine tapanade...biggest bouregs I have ever seen. The one thought in my mind was, 'I ain't leavin' hungry'...or maybe, 'will I be able to finish this?' Service was outstanding, and the prices were very resonable considering the high quality of the food. Parking can be problematic in 'Ole Downtown Mountain View', and its best to forego attempts at street parking, and opt for the hidden back alley/lot parking. It was one of those nights where we didn't have a set place in mind for dinner but wanted to go next door to the bookstore for an author's talk and book signing. We got out of our car and I just followed a delicious smell that led me from the parking lot to Cafe Baklava. Just follow my nose... it always knows! As I walked down the alley between the parking lot to the front of the restaurant, I noticed dishes with beautiful presentation through the plate glass window. Between the sights and the smell, I knew I had found the place to try. We were greeted at the front, sat right away, had fantastic service from our waiter and the food was as good as it smelled. Since there were four of us, we started with the Mezze platter. It was a good choice to get a little taste of a lot of different things. I got the vegetarian moussaka entree which was wonderful. My husband got the leg of lamb (I think it was a special) and my friends got the lamb moussaka and braised chicken. Everyone was really happy with their choices and there was more than enough food. [Food] The complementary Pita bread with oil base dipping sauce was delicious! We ordered the: Hummus- Standard Garbanzo, tahini (paste made from ground sesame seeds), lemon juice, garlic and a dash of olive oil. Pork Chop Special- Four pieces of lamp served with a side of rice and mixed vegetables. Iskender (Alexander)- Thin slices of lamb and beef, topped with a tomato sauce, yogurt, drizzled with a touch of butter, then served on a bed of crispy pita bread. Nothing really stood out to us. The hummus was very bland and lacked flavor. The Pork Chop Special was neither special nor worth the price, for $26 you'll get a very small sized meal. The pork chop was dry, bland, and under seasoned. The rice was dry and the vegetables were still hard in the center. As for the Alexander, it lacked presentation and finesse. Although it tasted a lot better than my pork chop, it was still not worth the visit. [Service] The service was average and the staff were friendly, constantly refilling our water and checking up on us. ------------------------------------------------- Overall, although the service was okay, the food did not present the finesse and taste I like in Mediterranean food. I think they don't deserve even a star as it was so far the most horrible experience for us. Only thing good (bearable) was the pita bread but we didn't have much complaints till we had a dessert. My husband ordered BAKLAVA (signature Mediterranean dessert) & believe me they NAILED it. We were going to a class nearby, and decided to try Café Baklava for a quick dinner meal. The weather was nice, so we chose to sit outside, and decided to sit on the side of the restaurant, rather than the front, where it was more bustling with foot & vehicle traffic. Plants grew along the wall, which, when we were leaving, and could step slightly away from the wall, noticed that the plants spelled out Mountain View, with a mountain & sun scene in the middle. Beautifully designed! As for the food, I had a glass of the house Merlot and one of the kebob dishes, that came with rice and a yogurt sauce. It was all very tasty and different. My friend had an eggplant dish, which she enjoyed, but I thought my meal looked better. I have only been the one time, but it was very relaxing, nice to be outside, and was a tasty meal. Boyfriend took me here for my birthday! First time having Mediterranean food so it was a bit different for me. I love the appetizers they brought out. It's flatbread with this tomato type dipping. It's amazing!! My boyfriend ordered the dolma for appetizers and the lamb Kebab. The dolma is grape leaves studded with pine nuts and rice with a yogurt sauce. Very unique, it has a bitterness to it but the yogurt kind of evens it out. I ordered combo kebab (beef, chicken, and lamb). The meat were a bit too dry for my taste. Probably the worst restaurant on Castro street... $19 for 5 shrimp and a handful of rice? Really? And the kabob was far from being a kabob, felt more like a strip of hamburger helper. Oddly seasoned. The only standout on the plate was the tzaziki and while it was tasty, it wasn't really tzaziki, more like a thick yogurt cream. We didn't stay for dessert so I can speak for the namesake of the place but I've had much better Middle Eastern/Turkish food. Was walking around to look for a place for lunch and saw people outside the patio eating wraps (which i really like) and the place looks clean so decided to give it a try. I got the fish wrap: This was dry (I used ketchup to save this -_-) . Basically it was some fish filet, tomatoes and onions. The fries were good but of course you can't really mess up on that. The beef kabab plate: Thick pieces of beef. Rice was plain but my bf liked it! The grilled peppers were amazing! The free pita bread + dip was actually my favorite part of the meal. Been here for dinner and got to sit outside because it was such a lovely evening. We ordered the kuzu kebab and Karides Guvec. The service was alright, when I asked the gentleman about the menu he seemed annoyed and not helpful at all. The kuzu kebab was cooked well, had really good seasonings and I felt it was good portion for myself. The rice was on the dry side and was almost unedible. The veggies were really overlooked and mushy. The karides guvee was very good, the only negative thing was that they only gave 4 measly pieces of shrimp (at least the shrimp pieces were big and not the cheapy kind. Extremely poor experience ordering food online from Cafe Baklava via MealHi5. I requested a cancellation of my order nearly an hour before it was allegedly delivered, never actually received the food (~$200 order), and had very poor customer service throughout the 3-hour experience. The first call from Hi5 came over an hour after I had placed an order (the entire delivery time was estimated to be an hour), stating that the order would be delivered shortly and to expect text message updates. Half an hour later, I still hadn't received any updates, so I tried contacting Hi5. And when that didn't work (my call went to an automated answering service), I contacted the restaurant itself. Apparently the driver still hadn't come to pick up the food, so I could either go pick up the food myself or keep waiting. So I requested a cancellation of the order -- at this point it was already 2 hours after my order was placed. I then received a call from Hi5 that the food was on its way; I repeatedly told the Hi5 driver that I had canceled the order, but he would not accept this. So I called the restaurant again and confirmed the order cancellation. The restaurant agreed that the food would not be given to the delivery driver (and confirmed that it still hadn't been picked up). After this, I left home to get dinner somewhere else and soon started receiving more calls and texts from Hi5: that the food was on its way, that the driver had arrived, and that it had been delivered. When I arrived back home about 10 minutes later, there was no food delivered anywhere near my house. I strongly advise against ordering through this delivery service. read more

For my husband's birthday we got some of his favorite foods; doner, iskender, chicken kebab, moussaka, sigara borek, meat borek, dolma, cacik,(Taziki), kunefe, chocolate mousse. What a disappointment. First off, the doner. It didn't taste anything like any doner I ever tasted. It's consistency was like spam or mortadella. Did they get this in a can? The dog ate it though. Moussaka was so so - kind of greasy, but the taste was OK. Boreks were OK, but not as they should be. The kunefe was great according to my husband; that's why it got the one star. Very inconsistent! Below average food and service. We've been to this place three times already and unfortunately we would never go back. The food taste and quality is average at best but what really throws us off is the inconsistency in the service. The first time, right after our dinner plates were taken away, our server put our check on the table without even asking us if we were interested to see the desert menu. We kindly asked for the menu ourselves. Before actually getting the desert our server brought back our new check and told us that he likes to close our table! Now we are typical restaurant goers but this was definitely a first!! Also the last time we were there, we ordered a combo kebab to share. What we were served was an incomplete plate missing the adana kebab as you can see in the picture. Not once our server came to ask how our food is. Something that is very typical. I have a feeling he knew about the problem and just tried to avoid us! In all these instances we were still incredibly nice to them and did leave them a nice tip. Chinese was out of the question (I had a dose from my fave place in Sacramento) Mexican was no way (had a breakfast burrito from my fave place in the Mission) and a hamburger just bad bad business (my arteries did a reality check with my last night during a Netflix Watch now of Blade Runner so I need to behave) we came across this charming little villa-esque eatery located on a busy corner. Once in, it was funny to see that my friend recognized several of the other diners and apparently we had all gone to the same Conservatory. The interior of this place is quite formal. White linens. Wait staff in white aprons. Everything was formal. I was impressed. My entree order was the Doner: Thin slices of slowly cooked lamb& beef served with rice pilaf and cacik. The meat was a little more overdone than what I normally prefer with meats but delicious, especially after the dipping sauce was drizzled. This came with a savory rice pilaf and a basket full of warm tasty bread that I proceeded to dip in their oil/vinegar mixer. We had a lovely dinner and will probably be back for lunch the next time around.. read more

Service here is very attentive, always appreciate that. Shortly after you sit down, they bring you fresh, hot bread with a very delicious tomato dip. I had quite a few pieces because the dip was so good, and it's hard to say no to hot bread. Our server noticed how much we liked the dip, that we got seconds! For the lunch entree I had the Donner wrap with beef only. To be honest, I was not that impressed with the wrap. I thought the ratio of wrap to filing wasn't as well balanced ( too much wrap), and I wish there was more yogurt sauce in there. The flavor was just mediocre as well. Came here today and tried a falafel wrap to go. It came with a salad! The falafel wrap was huge, and came with giant falafel that were spicy! I liked that extra flavor, most falafels I eat are not spiced so well, this was a nice treat. There was a little too much of the 'wrap' part, it was rather thick, I wanted it to be more about the insides than the outsides. I took my family there to celebrate birthdays and wondered if they offer any special perk to birthday guests, it's not about the discount on a piece of desert, it's about having the celebration atmosphere, the answer I got was no, no special desert or anything, we don't do such things here, when I asked if he can check with the management the waiter said the boss is stingy and there is no way he offers any 'perk', the boss doesn't give perk to employees and he won't give perk to guests either.
