October 18th and I can say I'll never return to Cafe Colma. This place was a go-to when I was in the area with family and friends. I feel very cheated for paying $17.95 for Kare Kare. This dish portions was cut in half with three ox tails. This is a total rip off. Rice is extra and this meal was over $20.00. In prior years Cafe Colma was a bang for your buck but now the biggest sham in Colma. I was told by the waitress, it was managements decision regarding serving portions. I have had takeout here multiple times with their amazing tapsilog and garlic rice. Tonight is the first time I've sat to eat in their restaurant. Waitress is rude if you are not some sort of Asian. Staff seems to be nicer to Filipinos than to other ethnicities. Waiters were smiling at other Asians, talking nicely to them and gave me and my friend a dirty look when she had to talk to us. She seemed to be in a rush. I had to yell at her back that I wanted hot chocolate because she left so quickly. As for the food, it is quite good Filipino food. The staff who work here are generally nice and pretty funny but not always attentive, but you don't necessarily go here for the service. I ALWAYS order an ube shake. ALWAYS! I have a bias for ube, but it's simple and good and pretty much ice cream. I like to get the bangus w/ garlic rice and eggs, but I like their lechon kawali as well. The krispy pata is great, but HUGE so if you order this bad boy, you must share or prepare to take it home. Other honorable mentions are the kare-kare and the palabok. My boyfriend typically gets the prime rib special which is actually really huge and juicy. The only thing worth eating on there is the slab of meat as everything else is frozen TV-dinner status. My bf was intrigue by the idea that there is actually a restaurant serving Filipino food inside Lucky Chances Casino. I had been there a few times after a night out in the City with my pinoy friends.. but the bf never.. so after the AIDS Walk we decided to go there along with my "Filipino food virgin girlfriend." Not a fan of Denny's or IHOP but it was late and I didn't eat dinner yet. I have never gone here before but a friend suggested going here after his shift so we could both get something to eat. Cafe Colma is on the left side of Lucky Chances Casino (opposite of the cashiers). Even at 1AM, both the parking lot and the restaurant was packed! Our Order: Tapsilog Longsilog (sausage) All silog comes with garlic rice, two eggs and a vinegar sauce. The garlic rice had a hint of garlic in it, but since I love garlic it really didn't have as much as I would've liked. Typically for breakfast items I like my eggs poached but I wanted it easier to eat over the rice and opted to have my eggs sunny side up. It was more undercooked than I would've liked though =/ The tapa was overly dry to me (more like very tough beef jerky) so wasn't too much of a fan. It only made sense that a cemetery was across the street. Parking was kinda hard to find in the outdoor lot, so we ended up parking in the underground garage. We went straight to Cafe Colma and we were told the wait would be 45 minutes. I didn't know it would be that crowded after the club. I still wanted to try the place so we put a name down. Fortunately, one party didn't show up when our name was called so they let us in within 15 minutes! Damn there were hella Filipinos up in that cafe. I don't blame em. Where else can you get a -silog plate at 230 in the morning? Pretty much each of us got a different -silog plate. I got the tapsilog platter because I seem to like beef tapa more than anything else among the other -silogs. To be honest it was kinda pricey for the plate, and the beef itself could have used a little more flavor. what set it off was the garlic rice and the overmedium eggs, especially after cracking the yoke. They have many silog plates to choose from but what makes the silogs soooo yummy is the garlic fried rice and the buttered egg. Add those with any dish here and you'll be in heaven. I don't know what places other people went to, but the portion here just seemed average. For the price, it didn't seem "HUGEEEE" as many claimed them to be. So how bout taste? I think to really enjoy the food here, it has to be late night/early morning right after clubbing and drinking, because the food is greasy as hell! My Longanisa was good nevertheless. The Tocino though I'm glad I didn't order. It was mostly cuts of fat. The part that my GF, nor I, always put aside. So the supposed "HUUGEEE" portion, which really is only average, turned out to be small after cutting out most of the fat. Perhaps she got caught with the batch that just happened to get all those pieces?----NOPE, because our friend who ordered the same got similar. Again I was happy with my Longsilog, but it was not spectacular or anything to brag about. The prices are not anything great and typical for these type of dishes. My gf can cook these better, and if your gf/wife is also Filipino, they probably could as well, and if they can't and they are Filipino, shame on them hah. Honestly, the only times I ever go here are after a night out or if I'm really craving a halo-halo. For a place that's open 24 hours, it's not that bad. You got your options of Filipino, Chinese, and some American dishes. They have all your basic silogs on deck --- longsilog, tapsilog, cornbeefsilog, spamsilog, and so on. There's almost always people here, whether in the cafe itself or in the casino section. Like I said, I'm usually only ever here after a night out and that's mostly what the crowd here is like also. You got your clubgoers, you got casino dwellers, and sometimes randomly you have what seems like entire families here at 2 in the morning so it's always pretty crowded. The wait isn't that long though, parking is plentiful, and it's large enough to accommodate a lot of people, so I can understand why people flock here. The food itself is mediocre at best to me. It's not terrible food, but I've definitely noticed the portions have gotten smaller and the prices have become more expensive over the years. I mean, come on it's like $10-13 for a silog and to top it off, the meat to rice ratio is terribly off. Most of the time, I stick to just getting an ube halo-halo, or the "mixed tropical goodies" as it's called on their menu, because it's pretty big and well worth the $6 or so bucks. After you finish eating, you pay at the front register on your way out. This is super convenient when you're out with friends because they make it easy to split the check. Overall, not my first choice for drunchies, but your options are pretty slim for late night dining in this area. Having a waitressing background, I definitely know the struggle of being bombarded with tables. But for the blatant rudeness of the workers, having to wait half an hour after receiving menus and only being acknowledged AFTER I waved my hands in the air for a good 6 minutes and asked 2 different busboys and another waitress to get service in their half empty "restaurant," I can definitely say I AM COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED. Let me start off with my initial annoyance: after ordering the food and waiting another 30 minutes to be served, Xiao Su Yu (as the name tag stated) decided at that moment to tell me the food that I ordered was no longer available, AFTER she brought out the food for the other 4 people in my party. In the middle of eating, after I placed my own order and was waiting, she then asked if we still wanted the drinks we ordered. Obviously not. Onto the food- calamari? Dry. Why'd they give me ketchup for the sauce? She never came back, by the way until she dropped the bill. The fried tofu? Straight up tasted like fish sauce. The potstickers? Distasteful. The Goto, was okay. Just very cold. The chow fun and BBQ pork fried rice on the other hand, was tasteful. We had ordered desserts earlier, when we first ordered but the lack of attention from the waitress caused us to lose appetite and we left as soon as she dropped our tab off and paid. What can I say, I'm biased. I've been going to Cafe Colma for the last 7 years for late night drunchies and it's been great every single time. They've got a good range of Filipino/Chinese food and the fact that they can make it at ANY time 24/7 speaks a lot about their staff. Everything comes out of the kitchen fresh. I definitely recommend getting their silog plates. If you're not Filipino, a silog plate consists of garlic fried rice, and your choice of tocino (sweetly marinated pork), longanisa (sweet or spicy sausage which is the Filipino equivalent to linguica or chorizo), corned beef, or bangus (deep fried milkfish). Honestly, I'd say get the combination and choose any of the two above. You won't be disappointed. Their kare kare is really thick and creamy from the peanut butter they use BUT idk how I feel about the green beans they use. Something tells me that they aren't fresh and that they're canned, which would explain the weird flavor the green beans have. If you've got room for dessert, I'd share a Halo Halo with someone. If you don't know what a Halo Halo is, google it, it's indescribable. The only cons about this place: expect a wait to get in, expect service to be average to mediocre. Simply put, there aren't enough tables or staff to accommodate the large amount of people that pass through on Friday and Saturday nights but they try their best. Call it tugging my heartstrings, and pros and cons aside, Cafe Colma feels like a small diner that's somehow attached to a casino. This place has been around for a long time now. It's a great 24 hour food option! They have Pilipino, Chinese, and American food options! They've always had tasty, quality food, and their kitchen is always quick with the turn around. My son and I were here on a late night, after I took him to his first concert in SF. We were both hungry, and I wanted to get out of the City, and grab something on the way home. Cafè Colma was always a popular destination for me and my friends during my earlier years! The karè-karè is BOMB! For those that are unfamiliar, this is a traditional Pilipino dish that has a peanut butter sauce, and typically uses oxtails as its protein, with some veggies to accompany it, usually eggplant, green beans, and or cabbage. I love peanut butter AND oxtails! This dish is a winner winner for me! The arriz caldo (rice porridge) is always great after an eventful night of drinking! Went back there a few times for the Prime Rib dinner. I noticed, every time I order it medium rare, it just comes out however they have it back in their kitchen. I'm going to order it rare next time and see what happens. Serious meat eaters know medium rare is the best way to eat steak. This time I got pretty much well done. I forgot to write reviews for this place. Now is my chance to write the REAL review for this place. I have eaten here at least 10 times and every time I had been really annoyed. Something wrong has to happen. This old, rude Chinese lady (and I'm sure she was because her accent) not only gotten our orders wrong, took too long and acted very rude in the way she was taking our orders. If I were to gamble here I would be so angry for the service I get for paying decent money at a casino and eating at some low-class area with very low-class employees. Food is good and plenty of options, service is terrible. Not friendly at all, does not pay attention if your glass of water is empty, won't even bother letting you know how long the wait is going to be for a server to take your order or for your food to be served. This place is as filipino as it gets. The cafe and the casino that surrounds it. Therefore, I had to try their filipino spaghetti. It was good. The serving vs. price ratio was right on. Maybe a little too much cheese, but then again, some people could argue that you can never have too much cheese. I also tried the halo halo. Eh, not really a fan. I've had better. The jelly and beans just didn't have enough flavor, and was almost bland. So in order to not make the dessert a complete bust, I enjoyed the always good ube ice cream on top. The first time I had lucky chances food, it was after going out to a club and I'm guessing anything would've tasted phenomenal at that point. This time was definitely not as great as the first time. The service is not good at all. It's slow and the servers don't pay much attention to you. They only come by for the basics (take your order, drop off your order, drop off the check). I got the chopsilog and my boyfriend got the chicken adobo. The chopsilog wasn't bad. It just wasn't great either. It came with an egg, garlic fried rice, and two slices of tomatoes. The chicken adobo was horrible. The soup was literally all oil. And most of the chicken was scraps and there were a lot of tiny bones in it. Café Colma, Lucky Chances Casino, Lucky Casino: Call it what you will, but when it comes to all hours Filipino food you can't go wrong or find much better than this. On a Friday or Saturday morning after clubbing in the city you may find more of a crowd at Ling Nam Noodle House as it's in Daly City and not Colma, much closer to the heavily Filipino populated Daly City. Their ilog combo's are what their known for whether it's longsilog, tapsilog, bansilog. I went with the Bangsilog combo which always comes with Garlic rice. It's not quite how I make it at home where I smear the grease on the rice for flavor or where I eat 6 links instead of 3, but the bangus was perfectly fried, filleted, and deboned. It was cold so I went with the Arroz caldo which also was good, but I'm used to being made with whole chicken and all parts rather than cubed chicken pieces. I wanted the skin floating around. This had a hard boiled egg and no saffron. I prefer the smaller quail eggs in mine. I went with the Ginataan for dessert which used too much banana and was a little thick. If you want the dirtier(not dirty in the sense of cleanliness, but fatty greasy flavorfulness) home cooked style cafeteria food go to Ling Nam's, heck maybe even carpool from the City. Colma Café is the place to be, just don't be a degenerate gambler and watch the sunrise after clubbing and eating from gambling the wee morning hours away. read more
