Small, popular place! We were visiting with a large group of 8. Based on reviews, we made sure to get there early so that we could get a table right away. We were there about 30 min before opening. The line probably starting actually growing about 15 min before opening. They have a wide menu of noodles, pineapple bun sandwiches, soups, and more. They have a series of set menus that are great value and you get to try more types of food. I got the beef satay combo that came with the noodles and egg truffle toast. This place is always packed with people by 9am and I finally understand their hype. Their service is super fast already and they flip tables quickly too. But they still have a minimum 60 minute wait. They got some very unique dishes that are their twist of a traditional Hong Kong style breakfast. I got their Clay Pot Satay Beef Instant Noodle which is definitely a classic. I love how hot the soup once since it was served in a clay pot. The soup was rich and the noodles were cooked al dente. My husband got the baked pork chop fried rice which is a classic as well. The ketchup tomato sauce leaves such a nostalgic childhood memory and the pork chops were cooked so soft. 10/10 would recommend this. They also had some interesting dishes I want to try next time including their fried chicken avocado pineapple bun sandwich, which was stacked so tall. I also love a good Hainanese chicken and would want to try that next time. This diner really reminds me of the HK diners, with the fast pace workers and the packed tables. Service is quick and no frills, with tables as tight together as possible. All their items are delicious and great comfort food. Their IG staple fried chicken and avocado pineapple bun does live up to the hype. Downsides is the tiny amount of avocado on the bun (barely noticeable) and there is an odd after taste on the fried chicken, which I can't quite put my finger on. It's a laid back spot but I love their attention to detail- from their Hong Kong inspired decorations and intimate seating to their dishes. It's a small place so there's typically a wait if you don't reserve online! However, the waiters try to be accommodating despite the bustling environment. It's a great grab and go spot as their service is quick! We decided to come after driving by and seeing a line outside a couple of times. We waited until it was "less busy" as per Google before coming. They have an iPad at the front door for joint the wait list if you come here and there is a line. The food was spectacular! I especially liked the baked pork chop rice with cheese. The cheese was extra stretchy and gooey. The sauce is on the sweeter side which I also enjoyed. The pork chop is also cut into strips, making it easier to eat. The molten salted egg yolk French toast is very sweet and reminded me of donut. The molten egg yolk immediately spilled out when I cut into it. It was a good bread to egg yolk ratio--just enough for dipping! The all day breakfast set B also comes a similar dish to the molten salted egg yolk French toast. Of course, this version is less oily. If you wanted to try the flavours but do not want to commit to getting an entire French toast, set B could be a feasible option! The food comes with drinks. The Hong Kong milk tea is very thick and creamy--a little on the bitter side even with sugar. I don't recommend the lemon tea though. It tasted like dish water in my opinion. A friend recommended this place to try because of their famous pineapple bun. I should have checked yelp. Didn't know we needed to be on a waitlist. Once I knew upon arrival, I had much higher expectations. Ambiance - 4/5: very tiny place. Entrance way fits only 1 person at a time. Most spots are 2-seaters so space is quite tight. With the amount of clients, it does get quite noisy. I liked that there were different posters of old magazines or movies. Saw a poster for a few old Chinese singers as well. They had a store sign inside (close to the bathrooms) in that signature style of signs you would see in Hong Kong at night. Food - 2.75/5: in all honesty, I was quite disappointed with the food. We ordered 4 out of the 10 top recommended foods on the list: signature froie gras & black truffle pineapple bun, fried chicken & avocado pineapple bun, molten salted egg yolk french toast, and baked pork chop rice with cheese (take out). We also ordered 2 additional snacks - street appetizer platter (fish balls, fish spring rolls, fried fish siu mai, red sausage - asked for non spicy) as well as street rice roll with fried siu mai (take-out). Froie gras pineapple bun - they tried to over compensate by baking the pineapple bun too much that it was hard. I guess they didnt want it to get soggy. A tradditional pineapple bun is supposed to be soft with the crispy top. The top was so hard that it reminded me of the walnut cookies. There was a lot of egg inside - both a scrambled egg (which was mixed in with the chopped froie graa with black truffle and a sunny side egg. The black truffle oul was strong and maybe it overpowered everything. Overall, the taste was uniform throughout, with the exception of the black truffle. We also got 3 drinks - cold hk milk tea (also 1 in the bottle to take home) and 1 yogurt drink with lemon. Fried chicken & avocado pineapple bun - same comment as above for the bun. It was a thick and tall burger though so it can be worth its' price. My friend only managed to eat half. I tried a little piece - it was supposed to have a spicy saucr on it. It was so tame that as a non-spice eating person, it was not spicy at all. Baked pork chop rice with cheese - this was a takeout that I brought home for my other half to try. I tried a little bit. It is a big portion. Lots of rice with a layer of pork chop. I found the pork chop a little dry and the rice dry and soggy at the same time. The tomato sauce isn't as sour as other places which I'm grateful for. My other half says it tasted ok and was full. Street platter - shared it with my friend. We both thought that it was overall salty and oily. The spicy option has satay sauce. They put that in ours even though we asked for non spicy but it waan't spicy at all. I highly doubt any of the food were home made. The fish siu mai tastes like the ones you find in the frozen aisle of asian grocery markets. Street rice rolls - loved the rice rolls. The sauce is standatd - soy sauce and hoisin sauce. Some places would also include seasame sauce as well as spicy sauce in the traditional dish. The fried fish siu mai was salty. Molten salted egg yolk french toast - overall super sweet. You would expect a salty middle to offset the sweetness of the french toast. I think it was also cocoa powder sprinkled all overall. So we were surprised that the molten salted egg yolk was sugar sweet. Drinks - my friend said her drink was ok. Thr milk tea is ok - wasn't that sweet. With the rest of the food, it tasted bland. The 2 drinks costed an additional $1.50. The bottled milk tea was $2 for take out. I just wanted the bottle. I wanted to try the iced milk tea with traditional ding ding candy but they wanted to charge me an extra $2.75 so I backed out of it. Service - 2.5/5: there was a client who required the wheelchair and was struggling to get in through the front door. The staff quickly yelled, "shut the front door" from inside, without checking for a reason. When we finally got seated after waiting for 1hr, we were asked to move tables to make way for another group of clients as soon as we ordered. Unfortunately, they mixed up our cups of tea when we moved. Overall - 3/5 and I'm being generous. The only thing I would come back and try is the hainanese chicken rice. Update to my review about a year later. It's still popular as ever and there's a great wait list set up so you don't have to physically be there to be on the list. The good is meh. The noodles are still the better dishes. The rice isn't as good. The usual HK style baked rice dishes aren't really eggy fried rice. A bit disappointing to me honest. And the curry pork rice was not good. I don't know what kind of curry they use but it's not the best flavor. I would stick with noodles and desserts. They've also seemed to expand their snack options since I've been here last. Personally, rather go to other places then. It's not really worth the wait list for us. I visited Cafe de Hong Kong around 11:30 am on a Monday morning (during the summer months). Our group had joined their waitlist, which was estimating that we would get a table around 11:15 am but was then ready sooner. We hadn't actually arrived yet so we called them to notify that we'd be late. The staff were wonderful as they put us on the top of the list when we did arrive, rather than making us queue again from the beginning. As a result, our wait was about 10-15 minutes. As you can imagine, this place is BUSY. There's only a bench near the entrance to wait, so we waited outside, along the sidewalk. The place looked quite clean and well-kept from a glance. The way the seating is arranged is relatively spacious. Our table for four was seated in the middle of the restaurant, close to the door, and yet we didn't feel too crowded (i.e. didn't feel like people who were waiting were hovering over us like at some other small Chinese spots). I ended up ordering #104 Fried Chicken & Avocado Pineapple Bun w/ Lettuce, Tomato, Spicy Sauce, House Mayo ($10.79) since my company ordered the #301 Hainanese chicken with rice, which was my first at choice, as we decided to order different dishes to try more things. I was impressed with the size of my sandwich! It was basically double the size of what I was expecting, with two pieces of chicken... And I feel like my sandwich could have fed two. The fried chicken was very crispy, not oily. The meat was juicy and tender. The pineapple bun itself was also quite big and tasty - as per usual, the top was the best part and the bottom half was unremarkable. Overall, the sauces and toppings paired well, but given the size, I felt like it needed some more sauce. All in all, great portions for the price. I only had a small taste of the Hainanese chicken with rice but I can say I'd order it again, as a whole dish for myself. The chicken was flavorful and so tender! The meals all had basic drinks included but we upgraded one of our drinks for $2.50 to the iced HK milk tea with traditional ding ding candy. Considering how much it costs to upgrade to iced drinks at other restaurants, this felt really reasonable. The HK milk tea was delicious and a must order; the ding ding candy was fun to try but I didn't care for it too much. Again, I'd like to emphasize that the wait staff were very friendly.
