A fine neighborhood restaurant. Don't come here if you expect to be blown away. This is not that kind of place. It is a nice neighborhood place in a setting that seems ideal for a Sunday brunch. The food was fresh tasting. Lightly cooked without heavy sauces that typify many Mexican restaurants, the food has nice bright flavor. The restaurant is very loud. I had a difficult time listening to what my dining mates had to say because of the noise. But, it seemed like people were having a good time and it seemed mostly filled with regulars. I had the seafood enchiladas. The seafood was very fresh and was well-seasoned. The portions are not huge. But, they were large enough for me. The price was fair between 12 and 23 dollars per entree. They also gave us a complimentary appetizer of flautas and chips. So, with appetizer, this was rather inexpensive. The atmosphere was unexciting. Bright, but somewhat sterile. Table cloth restaurant, but it reminded me in a way more of a hotel restaurant or a cleaner version of Olive Garden rather than a romantic date spot or an authentic Mexican Fonda or Taqueria. read more

so sad to have to write this review. have come here for years and enjoyed the food and the friendly service. no more. we understand that the owner has another restaurant and their attention is obviously there. were advised that staff from the kitchen had to not only come out and serve us as there was not enough waitstaff, but also had to use cash on hand to go out and buy provisions to prepare meals. other changes include previous thick sauces are thin and not including all ingredients, nice napkins are now the thinest paper ones we have ever seen, no long serve little taquitos and salsa with your meal, etc etc. owner was not in attendance and apparently no longer cares about what used to be a great little spot in menlo. unless there are serious changes, i don't expect them to be around even 6 months. soooo sad. read more

We went here after a long day expecting basic Mexican food. We were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant ambiance is not too cozy but is nice and perfect for anything other then a super romantic meal. Our food was delicious. A bit spicy so I would have liked my water glass to be kept full. Overall though the meal was great. I would highly recommend and look forward to going back myself. read more

Five stars for there green salsa and Camarones Rancheros!! I simply love to eat here. I have been here on many occasion and have brought friends and family and each time everyone is most satisfied with the food. They have a small space and also couple times, the service was little slow. But, I will still rate it 5 stars for the food. read more

Unfortunately, I have decided I will no longer dine here. The last time I was here was just about a year ago. At that time, I wanted to write a review but hesitated because I wanted to give myself another try before I write a not so good review (which I did). I have been dining here since they opened. They have always had personnel issues, waiters, hostess, etc. were hit and miss. However, few years back, one particularly waiter who was attentive and pleasant changed my view and became a weekly regular. I looked past others who were unfriendly and not as well trained to be adequate server or hostess. The last time I dined here was with a friend-we were both puzzled at their unattentive and rude service. Although, I don't like the thought of this but the message was pretty clear that it was my friend that was not well received. My understanding was-racial possibly because of his Latin background (I don't quite understand it entirely but it definitely had cultural/racial message in their rudeness). It was uncomfortable and for me particularly because I chose this restaurant. Food here is okay not great but I used to come here because it is a neighborhood restaurant I wanted to support. I am a believer that restaurant staff can make or break your food experience. My experience with Luis (past waiter) always made me feel welcome and in return made me come back again and again-during his shift. New staff, new experience and I hope my new review is received by the owners to train their staff to be more aware and sensitive. I wish them luck but after years of loyalty that experience was bad and uncomfortable for me not to return. read more

We love this place. In fact this is our favoriate resturant in Menlo Park. The salsas were fresh and all the dishes were very flavorful and not too greasy like a lot of other Mexican resturants. I have since gone here a number of times and have had great service and consistently good food. I have gone with 2 other people and we have used 3 separate credit cards without any fuss, so apparently the waiter who gave us a hard time is an anomaly. Now they charge $8.00!! I have also noticed they've reduced the size of their burritos. Really?!?!? I am not a big fan of mexican food. But I can tell you that cafe del sol is a great mexican restaurant. i went there with a group of friends last saturday and I really enjoyed their food. I only ordered a beans soup, since I was not hungry. It was very good. Also their appetizers are very good, especially the ones rolled with potatoes inside. And one of my friends shared a chicken enchilada with me. It was delicious! Nice to go alone or with a group of friends. Not crowded. I don't know why. Maybe because it is pretty hidden on doyle street. I would recommend it to anyone. read more

SG and I went there for lunch last week. I am rating this for the food only, as the place is space challenged, and there are doing some remodeling on the outside. Having never been there before, I ordered the vegetarian (I know, I never order anything vegetarian!) stuffed poblano chile which came with beans, rice, mango salsa and small salad. My husband and I recently visited this restaurant on a Thursday night. We were so impressed that we returned on Saturday night and had another great meal. This is easily the best Mexican restaurant we have found on the Peninsula. The appetizer plate that comes with every meal is wonderful, and the presentation of each and every dish is outstanding. I love this restaurant - laid back, delicious, inexpensive. This is the best place for take out in Menlo Park, hands down.

The food is quite good and the setting is quite charming. Service can be a bit pokey, but if you tell them you've got a time issue, they snap right to it. We eat Mexican a couple of times a month, have tried many places in the Menlo-Atherton-Palo Alto area. Parking can be dicey in that part of Menlo, especially at lunch, so plan accordingly. read more

This was a spontaneous decision my friend and I made, mostly me, but I am so happy we did because I needed a great Mexican meal after the last one (Palo Alto Sol, thumbs down). The sauce on their enchiladas is amazing, so flavorful & rich, and the the chicken filling was also very delicious. The chips and salsa are full of garlic and freshness. Chef uses a fresh palette of spices and displays an aesthetic presentation no matter if you order a simple sandwich or enchilada. The flavors are fresh and unique. All of us today immensely enjoyed our lunches and it's amazing that a restaurant of this caliber IN MENLO PARK can keep prices affordable for those of us who are lucky to work in this city but could never afford to live there.
