Cash only business and while there is a parking lot I got really lucky to get to park right next to the dumpster, being the only spot remaining. The side street sign near residential says no parking anytime and the busier main street has a bus stop on the corner, so good luck. I walk in and get a head nod from the guy behind the counter. No one is super friendly but no one gave me attitude either. All the patrons are speaking Portuguese and everyone is glued to the TV watching a fútbol game. A caveat for me is that I am not huge coffee drinker and do love my frappes / frappucinos, and other sweet coffee drinks; so the hot Irish cream latte is delicious with high-quality coffee and still sweet enough that I enjoy the sip. I usually get the ice blended option but it's late November so I can work with the hot cafe this time. The Prosciutto and cheese on Portuguese roll comes cold or hot, so mine was warmed in a toaster oven. The counter is super tall so I couldn't see what was going on but the server knew I was a newbie so he kept me updated on my food as I waited. The sandwich took awhile but afterward was the right element of toasty warm with still soft bread. I might go again but I would have to (1) have cash on hand, (2) be in the area, and (3) be short on time but still have some to kill so only waiting for a toaster oven and not a starbucks line (lol) is viable. A small coffee shop, I dig the vibe here. I didn't forget to bring cash like some and I would say that the prices here are pretty cheap. I got the Garoto, which is basically a half Latte. The espresso feels stronger than the milk but it slowly grew on me. The 8oz size is pretty small but for $3, it's not that bad. The hotness level is perfect and took a good amount of time to make. Cute no frills caffe that is a Portuguese owned shop. I was stuck waiting to meet my contractor so I killed some time here. Lady is pleasant and too my latte order with soy milk and she didn't even ask me to pay so I sat down in one of the small tables. The drink came quickly and it was yummy. It was hot and the soy was creamy and it was a whole pint size so it was great. People kept walking in and speaking Spanish so the lady seem proficient to speak with the customers. You can watch Portuguese TV which was interesting. Seemed that most customers were Spanish speaking. Only meh part of the experience was patrons smoking outside. Never see that anymore in cali but they seem to have a lenient policy here. Still not going to knock a small family friendly coffee shop. Walked over here while visiting my best friend who just moved into the neighborhood. They are open until 1 PM during the pandemic. The proprietor wore a mask, I had full confidence ordering my espresso. He wasn't taking credit cards, so make sure to bring cash. The gas station across the street has an ATM. The espresso was really good! He told me he makes it with Italian coffee. Though the owner seemed a little gruff at first, he's a nice guy. When I didn't have cash he offered to let me go and, "pay me when you come back!" -- I headed over to the ATM and got cash because I want to make sure to support the businesses. This place took me back to Europe. The shop is very tiny, but most European coffee places are super tiny, so it seemed very authentic. There were about 5 Portuguese men that seemed like regulars drinking their expresso. I had instant flashbacks of a shop I went to in Italy. I tried that garato, which is similar to a cappuccino, less foam, but just as strong. It was amazing :) I really wanted to try some of their food, but it was cash only and they have no ATM. Loved this place! It's a cozy spot with it's own parking lot at a convenient location. I walked in and the lady at the front desk immediately assisted me and answered all my questions. Just completely wonderful and can I just say that I have pretty high expectations when it comes to espresso. I like it strong and good quality (European quality :) which is why this place is so perfect. It's such a gem. I stumbled upon it when I needed a coffee on my way to a high school in the area. I have been coming here almost every day for two weeks and yesterday, the owner came to my table where I sat with colleagues and put a coffee in front of me. I asked, "What's this?" He replied, "Your coffee." Amazing. I hugged him. Almost wanted to cry. Now, that is family. I need to mention that my coffee wasn't just a cup of coffee. It's a half caf quad espresso and he knew this. I am Portuguese on my dad's side but I speak Spanish, oddly. There's nowhere else I would order coffee. It's always a pleasant experience coming. A friend and I wandered in here after an All Souls Day high mass at Five Wounds in 2016 and so, this place is our after-mass destination for me and my friends. We were greeted by a friendly woman behind the counter. She explained the different coffee drinks to my friend to figure out what he'd like according to his tastes. I got a garoto which is espresso and milk. It was out, on the table in a minute. It doesn't take a long time to get served here. The place is ALWAYS clean. In fact, every time I crack open a bottle of Fabuloso, I think about Docanto and another garoto. They have a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages, anything from your average American soda to fruit nectars to Portuguese Soda! There is a decent selection on alcohol like Portuguese wine such as red and white Porto (once, I've ordered both because I was curious), Portuguese beer, and some domestics. The sandwiches are good, too. They can be toasted for an additional 0.50$. They usually come in Portuguese rolls though I've seen them in two different shapes. Also when they have it, get the custard or the spice pastry with your coffee drink. You won't regret it. read more

In order to properly convey the quality of this espresso, I have to provide a little background. I spent last summer in Seattle. While I was there, I made it a goal to visit all the great coffee shops around to get a good sense of great coffee. The best place I found was "Espresso Vivace." The owner, David Schomer, has described perfect espresso as "tasting as good as coffee smells." Espresso is finicky; making it perfect is like trying to balance an egg. If you push it too far one way, you'll end up with decidedly bitter, black liquid. Too far the other way and it comes out sour as a lemon. Schomer's solution is scientific. He ran experiments to find the best conditions for espresso, and then vigorously trained and monitored his baristas to ensure that they adhered to this formula. Vivace baristas are serious, even cold, because they put so much concentration into their brew. The atmosphere is similarly cool and hip, with gleaming glass widows and stylish, modern decor. Vivace's espresso is good---excellent, even---and it's well worth a visit if you're ever in Seattle. So why that long-winded explanation of a completely different coffee shop in a completely different state? Perspective. If you've ever even been to the part of town where Cafe DoCanto is located, you still have probably never noticed it. It's on the side of a dirty white building, and sports a single, dusty sign that's nigh unreadable from the main road. The clientele is entirely portuguese, many of them employees at nearby auto shops. There are no plaid-shirted, Ray-Ban-wearing, American Spirit-smoking hipsters here. Inside the tiny cafe, you're find a tall, compact espresso bar, TVs tuned to Portuguese channels, and refrigerators stocked with sodas, juices, and, of course, beer! The barista is warm and friendly, the decor is simple and sparse. This is not the establishment David Schomer would envision. This espresso was not born from the scientific method, pH testing, and professional training. Despite that, the quality of this espresso exceeds what I had anywhere in Seattle. I was stupefied by how good it was. I kept expecting a bitter or sour finish after every sip, but there was none to be found. I have to wonder if even the barista brewing it knows how excellent it is. He's a very humble guy, and I tried my best to convey to him just how awesome what he's making is; hopefully he understood. DoCanto is open early, so I have a feeling I'll be stopping there five days a week on my way to work. Do yourself a favor and stop here some time, if you can find it. read more

This is a cute little Portuguese coffee shop located in the SJ downtown area. If you want good, strong, high quality coffee come here! I've had the garoto which is espresso with steamed milk. The portion is small but it wakes me up more than a grande latte at Starbucks for sure! The coffee is very good quality with a strong, not bitter, coffee taste. This place is truly funky. When I want to pretend that I am not in San Jose, I like to go here. It's in an interesting part of the city, and Cafe do Canto is old world. Generally there are Portuguese men sitting around drinking espresso, a beer, maybe a glass of wine. Notice I said men. Women go here, and they are welcome, but this is like being in a little Portuguese village in the Azores... you can watch Portuguese TV, talk soccer (Benfica, Sporting, Oporto, Santa Clara- Ponta Delgada). If you are a woman, don't feel dissuaded from going. The gentlemen are very welcoming and love to have non-Portuguese show up. One time I went with freinds and there were no tables. A table full of gentlemen got up and gave us their table. When was the last time this happened to you at a cafe? They make a great galao (a type of latte, without the foam). If you want a mini-latte, get the garoto. I love their presunto and Sao Jorge cheese sandwich. The flavors are mild, and the bread is fantastic. Cap it off with a small pastry. My favorite is the queijada, the bean type. If you don't like beans, try one. They are great. They have other sandwiches there, but this is not an American "deli" so do not expect Togo's types sandwiches... these are European (small, with butter). Oh yeah, everyone speaks English. read more

Cafe do Canto is nestled in downtown San Jose's "Little Portugal" district. Stepping into this cafe is like taking a step back to the old country. way cheaper than starbucks, very unique cozy family friendly place in the slightly sketchy little portugal area of east san jose. there aren't very many coffee shops in my neighborhood, so it's a welcome addition. i believe there was no additional tax on top of the listed price. 16 oz latte was i think only 2.50$. came in and they were showing sports in portugese on a tv. wasn't soccer, can't remember what sport tho. something unusual. they have sodas from abroad, i got one that i believe was passion fruit flavored. they also have portugese pastries for sale on the counter. free wifi? hell yeah! there's a dearth of spots like that near my house, unless you want to chill at a vietnamese "coffee" shop with half naked ladies, not really my thing. tables outside, a few tables inside, nothing fancy. this is the type of place middle aged and older guys hang out for hours. i didn't feel skeezed out at all as a single lady hanging next to the male only crowd, no leering, but got the feeling if i wanted to chat with them they'd be friendly and have a lot of interesting stories. there are a few portugese restaurants across the street that seem to be hangouts, but they seem to be targeted to portugese people only, i would feel out of place hanging out as a non-portugese person. not open late, pity. but it's not a great area, panhandlers and street walkers are not uncommon at night. not that wheelchair friendly as the counter is a tall bar, but i'm sure the barista would make accommodations to bring the coffee around the counter. tables outside would probably fit a wheelchair. read more
