So glad we found this place AGAIN! We having been going to the Old Denton Rd location for 10+ years.

I always discount reviews where people do not actually eat the food. But I had to write this one. The woman who is the "hostess" could not be WORSE. Entered (fwiw the place smells like low tide. No kidding) and asked if they have any gluten free items. My friends daughter has celiac's so quite important. She looked at us and said, "Nope, not that I know." Seriously???!!! One of my favorite places when I visit Dallas! We have the guiso de res every time and it's perfect. We tried the la diabla which was solid and the queso was to die for. They had the game on and we sat at the bar. Bartender took good care of us throughout our meal. We will definitely be back! read more

My love affair with Herrera's dates back more than 35 years when I'd wait in line outside the door of the shoe box original shack on Maple to get my Tex-Mex fix. Back then, I was a VISTA volunteer just out of school and Tex Mex joints were about the only places I could afford to take a date. That was well before Dallas became the great restaurant boom town that it is today. There was always plenty of Tex Mex around here, of course, but Herrera's had the rep among critics and people in the know as one of the most authentic, atmospheric places in town. Flash forward several decades, and lo and behold Herrera's has grown up and become more prosperous. The new space at the Omni is spiffy to a level that would have been unimaginable back in the late 70s. Great bar with TVs for watching sports and a patio that looks several times larger than the entire original location. Super attractive, modern dining room with an open kitchen and airy feel. A+ for the new space. Parking surprisingly gets an A+ too. I figured most of the business at this location comes from the convention center directly across the way and the adjacent Omni hotel, and that parking for locals who drive there would be a hassle. Not so! There is free and convenient parking in the garage right under the restaurants. This is a big deal for locals like me who won't pay for parking to eat Tex Mex and hate how difficult parking is these days at restaurants all over town. So how did the food stack up with my memories and my older, more critical taste buds? I was disappointed my first visit. The Tex Mex combinations I loved (named after members of the family) were not on the menu. I opted for one of the new taco offerings which was good but not what I was looking for. I mentioned to management as I was leaving how sad I was that my fave Jimmy's Special was gone. No it's not he said, we can make it for you! Went back as soon as I could and sure enough they did. Jimmy's Special: 1 Chicken Enchilada with Salsa Ranchera, 1 Cheese Taco, 1 Cheese Enchilada, 1 Combination Burrito, 1 Beef Taco Topped with Guacamole. Heaven! A+ again. If you want great Tex Mex plus excellent bar drinks (margaritas to die for),in a contemporary setting, try the reborn Herrera's. read more

Service from hell.... oh, wait, we didn't get service. Absolutely terrible. We had to wait over an hour for our food at a time when there were not that many people. Hardly checked on us and charged full price for everything and even the drinks that are WAY over priced. Food was not even good, don't recommend. read more

The food is average (therefore it's overpriced). Our server was horrible. We were seated for almost 40 minutes before he took our order. The drinks took forever to come out. I felt he was very inattentive. It then took over 30 minutes just to get our check which we only got after complaining to the manager. Once we have him our card it took over 10 minutes to run the cards. Once he brought us our checks he then hovered over us while we filled in the top portion. We came here on two occasions during a week long stay in the area. The first time we enjoyed lunch outside with a group of eight. The service was on point and everyone enjoyed their meal. We returned for dinner a few days later and while the restaurant was busy, we were seated quickly. We soon realized that this was going to be a different experience from our first visit. We waited a good 10 minutes before our server engaged us. She took our drink orders and then disappeared. Someone else brought chips and salsa and they were long gone before our server finally reappeared with our drinks. The orders took quite while and the server remained scarce throughout. We ordered chicken and beef fajitas which were good, but nothing special. Based on previous reviews, weak service seems to be a theme here. With better service, this could have been a four star review. read more

The food is delicious. The ceviche is a great appetizer but can't go wrong with queso or aguacate. The pozole had a different twist with carne desebrada, very yummy. Excellent. Not a "tex-mex" fan being from cali, but this place does it very well. This was songiod, i would consider going back again tonight. The chips were fresh and crisp. The salsa trio they give you is delicious and generous! I ordered the chicken enchiladas, rice and black beans special. The service was exceptional. Did not have 1 complaint. Don't go. Not worth it. Over priced for the location but the food and drinks can be found in your local dive neighborhood Mexican joint for half the price. The location is nice so when you walk in you expect to be greeted. There was none of this. Everyone looked like they didn't know what to do. The restaurant was empty and we got sat in the back on a shaky table. Then when my friends asked for cocktails, they had none of the ingredients. We stuck w margaritas. The carne Asada had no flavor and all of us were using the salt shaker more than normal. All six of us felt we wasted our time and money. The crowd is also meh. So many good Mexican restaurants in town. This one is a waste. read more

Went for lunch. I wouldn't go here unless it was convenient to my stay at the omni and I had a lot of money to spend on a gourmet Mexican meal. I work close by. It didn't offer lunch specials. It was a bit fancier than I look for on a weekday lunch. The waitress was nice. I got the la Amelia (sp) salad. I love a chopped salad, it was really good! A really well done salad. It was $11. I would rather Jason's deli for $9 and lots of options, but this salad was good! They gave us complimentary bean soup. My coworker was looking forward to tasting the tortilla soup, but the one size price of $9 for tortilla soup was higher than I've seen. The restaurant was clean. I would really suggest a lunch menu. We drove around downtown not knowing what we were in the mood for. Ended up here because from the outside, it looked very modern and a place to see. We parked ($15) in the garage and took a quick walk to an elevator and to the restaurant. The wait on a Saturday night at 845 was about 5 minutes. That should have clued us in. While I generally do not care about decor, the place looked way nicer from the outside. The cheap hanging lamps were falling apart and it was all just bleh. We didn't sit at the bar, but that area did look more put together. The margarita and whatever random drink my husband ordered were tasty. The guacamole was fresh and was the only food we enjoyed, even the chips were just okay. How does one mess up chips?? Now, you may ask why we both ordered cheese enchiladas. Good question. The menu had nothing that jumped out at us. So we eventually thought to ourselves...you can't mess up cheese enchiladas. In hind sight maybe we jinxed ourselves. Turns out you can mess them up. Mine were edible, the gloop of cheese inside wasn't melted and the taste of the queso on top was very reminiscent of AMC movie nachos. And don't get me wrong, I can't say that I mind movie nachos, but not on my enchiladas. Not to confuse anyone, the queso color was white, it just tasted of yellow. Now onto my husband's enchiladas. Like I said, same meal, but at least I could take a few bites to hold off the hunger rumbles. He couldn't cut into his without force. Note to the reader: he is a welder, so no it wasn't the user lack of upper arm strength. Which oddly enough isn't something I figured someone needed to eat an enchilada. We never complain because our waiters are not chefs, but she did notice we didn't touch our food. We said please do not take it off, not your fault. Like a great service provider, she did and we tipped her more than the original tip would have been. Also, I failed to mention we had about 3 wait staff, which they mentioned at the beginning. But aside from the female, having three did not speed things up. Needless to say, we won't be back but neither should any unsuspecting wander-byer. read more

This place is one of my favorites to come grab a drink and some tasty food. I really like their shrimp enchiladas with the green sauce. Bar staff was attentive and had good recommendations on different drinks they served there. I read different reviews on here about the wait times but when I went, the service was good and the food was out promptly. I stop here everyime I'm in downtown Dallas. Normally very good.....not great, but good. Visited it recently and it has gone downhill. No one at the host stand to seat you. Bathrooms trashed, services was horrible and chips were terrible. Didn't even finish my meal. Took two bites and asked for my check. The bartenders were eating at the bar. read more

I made a reservation 2 days in advance for 7:00, 13 people. The person who took the reservation said, "Are you with the volleyball tournament?" I said "Yes". He said "OK. We'll see you Saturday. I called at 11:00 am Saturday to change the reservation to 2:00 pm. They said they won't take a reservation because there is a convention. I said, "I know, that's why I would like a reservation." I said "We have a 7:00. I'd like to move it to 2:00." He said, "I don't know who you talked to but we aren't taking reservations." Food was ok. Overpriced like hell! Service was horrible!! Server seemed like she just had her 1st table to wait on...EVER. Turns out, she wasn't new, just clueless. She couldn't even answer simple questions like "what's in the reg. (unexpected, weirdly green) frozen margarita?". Even the GM agreed with us about her when we had to go back to restaurant for 2nd time within 3 days because the damn fools charged us twice (overcharged 1st bill AND revised bill) totaling almost $200! Supposedly the 1st overcharged bill was credited back on our card (I requested, verbally about 3 times) credit receipt but another server/bartender came over & told us for some reason their machine didn't print out a credit receipt?! I told them they should be able to reprint it, but my husband was so frustrated at that point he just wanted to get the fu%* outta there. COME ON OMNI. You've GOT TO HIRE better employees!! Great food! I miss the smoked, roasted salsa! Super packed even at lunch and sometimes has a limited menu with the conventions at nearby hotels. However, the food is fantastic, the service just needs to catch up. read more

Went to Dallas for volleyball nationals. Ate here with teammates and 4 of our weeks was spent in the bathroom after a late night meal here. Place is nice but food is not high quality and given our food poisoning situation, would NOT RECOMMEND. We've eaten here before and the food was good. We returned on Saturday May 27 for an early dinner, I think it was around 5:00pm. I had ceviche. My husband had enchiladas. Both were good. Not too long later I was violently sick from the ceviche. I knew it was that because I didn't have anything else In my stomach. I was doubled over on the bathroom floor for hours, alternating with shivers and hot spells. I didn't start feeling better until Monday. read more

Perhaps an off night due to a large party seating just prior to our arrival. Chips and salsa were delivered promptly to our table and then...nothing. No water, no beverage, no acknowledgment from anyone that even looked remotely like waitstaff. Chips and no water? Really? Finally someone stopped (looked maybe like a manager) and asked if we wanted anything to drink. When asked if he could make a non-alcoholic frozen strawberry margarita, he said not frozen but maybe on the rocks. I changed up to a regular frozen strawberry margarita and water. Water finally delivered to the table. After another interminable wait, we finally asked the hostess if she could check on our drinks. What I was finally served was some on-the-rocks concoction that was undrinkable. When the manager/waiter finally took our order, I asked for "just 2 cheese enchiladas". Pseudo waiter asked if beans and rice OK, too. Sure. What was finally delivered were cheese enchiladas with some kind of soupy meat on top. Not wanting to wait any longer for a reorder, I just scraped the meat off and ate mediocre enchiladas. As you can imagine, after another long wait and having had our plates cleared for some time, we had to ask for the check. I'm not high maintenance when it comes to dining out. This was an incredibly bad experience by any standard. read more
